本稿では,遠隔視線検出技術により共同注視とアイコンタクトを用いぬいぐるみ型ロボットと人の視線コミュニケーションを実現したシステムを紹介する.ロボットは,1)ユーザがロボットの周辺を見ているときは,同一箇所へ顔を向け,2)ユーザがロボットを見たときは,目があったことを表すため身振りやうなずきといったジェスチャと音声を用いるといったように,ユーザの視線に応じて反応するよう設計された.遠隔視線検出は,単眼カメラにより顔特徴認識を行い,目の画像から3D眼球モデルを導出することで,非装着型を実現している.被験者実験の主観的/客観的評価により,i)ロボットの興味が想定される対象への被験者の共同注視行動,ii)ロボットの共同注視行動に喚起される,被験者のロボットへの興味,iii)被験者とのアイコンタクトに応じたロボットの反応に喚起される被験者のロボットへの好意,をそれぞれ確認した.

Container production of Serianthes nelsonii Merr. plants for out-planting within the endemic range is a major component of the plan to recover the critically endangered tree species. We exploited the ability to prune roots with copper or with strategically placed air holes in container walls to determine if root quantity or quality would increase in comparison to traditional container design. Following 23 days of growth after transplanting, new root length and root dry weight did not differ among the container types. However, most roots from the control and copper-treated containers developed from the bottom of the root system, and direction of root growth was primarily geotropic. In contrast, the air-pruning containers produced plants with plagiotropic root growth near the soil surface. Root growth was positioned with 58% in the top two-thirds of a rhizotron window for the air-pruning, 29% for the copper-pruning, and 16% for the control containers. Our results indicate that direction but not length or dry weight of post-transplant root growth was changed by use of air-pruning containers. For a critically endangered tree like Serianthes nelsonii, the improved root morphology afforded by containers that use air-pruning of roots in the nursery may improve tree stability following transplanting.

Abrupt nicotine cessation after chronic use disrupts monoaminergic systems and causes withdrawal signs/symptoms. In this study, the precursor of serotonin 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) relieved nicotine withdrawal signs. (−)-Nicotine bitartrate or equimolar sodium tartrate was infused into each rat via a s.c. osmotic minipump for 7 days. Somatic abstinence signs (teeth-chattering/chews and shakes, etc.) were counted one day after pump removal. Somatic signs were attenuated by the i.p. injection of 5-HTP, but not by NSD-1015, a centrally-acting L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor, indicating that 5-HTP mitigates somatic signs mainly through its conversion to 5-HT.

Based on the extracts of 4 letters in the <I>Spirit of Missions</I> quoted from the <I>New York Journal of Commerce</I>, the author has already reported on the teaching of English by Henry Wood, and pointed out his great contribution to the history of both Christianity and English studies in Japan.<BR>The present paper deals mainly with the study of 3 out of the 4 letters in the <I>New York Journal of Commerce</I>, for which Henry Wood acted as a correspondent during his service on the U. S. Ship Powhatan. He also sent many letters on other subjects. The 3 letters concerned here contained important information unquoted in the <I>Spirit of Missions</I>. Some examples are as follows. Each of the 3 letters was headed "MY SCHOOL AND (MY) SCHOLARS IN JAPAN." With no knowledge of Dutch or Japanese, Wood utilized some English-Dutch dictionaries and one or two Dutch-Japanese dictionaries, and also used the primitive language-the language of signs-to define particular words. He was confident that the Japanese were hopeful for Christianity, and that the method of conducting them to Christianity, under its prohibition, would be by teaching them English.<BR>Henry Wood was born on April 10, 1796, in Louden, NH. He received a Master of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1822, and was a tutor at Dartmouth College in 1822-23. After studying divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary for about one year in 1823-24, he was a senior tutor of Latin and Greek at Hampden-Sydney College in 1824-25. He was ordained in the Congregational Church in 1826 and in the Presbyterian Church before 1856. He was U. S. Consul at Beirut, Syria from 1853-56. He was commissioned Chaplain of U. S. Navy on September 11, 1856. He was on the U. S. Ship Powhatan in the Chinese and Japanese seas in 1858-60. In 1858 he sent two letters to the authority of the Reformed Dutch Church of the United States, appealing to establish its mission at Nagasaki. He taught English to the Japanese at Nagasaki in 1858 and on the Powhatan in 1860. He was stationed at the Naval Asylum in Philadelphia in 1863. He died in Philadelphia on October 9, 1873.

本稿では,メディアコンテンツを対象とした統計的一般化逆作用素の構成方式を示す.これは,与えられた印象を表す単語とその重みで表される印象メタデータからメディアコンテンツを生成する機構を実現するものである.本方式は,従来,我々が提案してきた手法であるメディアコンテンツから印象を表す言葉をメタデータとして抽出する,メディアコンテンツを対象としたメタデータ自動抽出方式手法の逆演算として構成される.しかしながら,本逆演算においては一般的に,不良設定問題が発生する.この不良設定問題を解決するために,制約条件としてそのメディアの種類に応じた統計情報やそのメディアを対象とした研究成果・理論を用いる.これにより,メディアコンテンツと言葉の間の相互変換を可能とする.さらに,本方式を楽曲メディアコンテンツに適用し,印象語で表現された印象メタデータから楽曲メディアコンテンツを生成するシステムを実装する.これを用いて実験を行い,提案方式が実現されていることを示す.
