The wear characteristics of ZrO₂ balls, which were prepared under several conditions, were investigated.<br>The wear loss of ZrO₂ balls was attributed to the materials of the tank, such as Al₂O₃, ZrO₂, and urethane. The wear loss of ZrO₂ balls using a mill with an Al₂O₃ lining was larger than that using a mill with ZrO₂ or urethane. This result indicated that the wear particles of the Al₂O₃ lining worn by ZrO₂ balls attacked the surface of the ZrO₂ balls and promoted the wear of the balls, because Al₂O₃ particles are harder than ZrO₂ balls.<br>Also, the wear loss of the ZrO₂ balls depended mainly on the grain size, fracture toughness and strength of the balls.<br>The SEM of the worn surface showed some defects and pores, and the wear mode was primarily intergranular.<br>It was supposed that phase transformation also had an influence on the wear of the balls.

Development of toughened zirconia parts for grinding was reviewed. This work was achieved by developing the high purity, ultra-fine zirconia powder processing and toughened Y-TZP( Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> doped tetragonal ZrO<SUB>2</SUB> ceramics ), and investigating the propertieswear characteristics relation. Zirconia powders prepared by the hydrolysis method, which was the lowest production cost, showed the good formability and sinterbility. Y-TZPP containing 2.5-3.0mol% Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> gave higher fracture toughness and strength by the stress induced phase transformation toughening. The wear characteristics of Y-TZP grinding media depended strongly on the fracture toughness, strength and grain size, but not on hardness and density within the range of this experiment. It is considered that the excellent wear characteristic zirconia parts for grinding can be obtained by controlling the fracture toughness, strength and microstructure. To investigate these mechanism, the microstructures of worn areas were examined by SEM observations.

インドネシア科学院ボゴール標本館と東京大学との共同研究として, 1991年に西カリマンタンにおける渓流沿い植物の調査が行われた.その際見いだされた, ホウオウゴケ属(蘚類)の新種Fissidens dalamairを記載した。本種はアジアに広く分布するホウオウゴケF.nobilisに近縁であるが, 細く長い茎を持つこと, 葉が急角度で茎につくこと, 葉の舷が強く発達するといった形態的特徴, また, 常に流水中に生育するという生態的特徴を有しており, 渓流沿い環境により適応して二次的に種分化をおこした種であると考える。

Many articles have reported that the white lines painted on both sides of highways are used by automatically driven vehicles to control their lateral movement when driving. They are detected by stereo cameras or radars. And GPS is used as an additional information for improving its robustness and reliability. However, when we think about an urban area, the stereo cameras and radars cannot recognize any white lines because white lines do not exist at intersection. Therefore, a method for controlling a vehicle without environmental recognition becomes necessary. In our method, the steering angle is controlled by using simple map information comprising nodes and links of roads, which are widely used in navigation systems, and the data of the vehicle's position, which is obtained continuously. In addition, by using two front gaze points to solve the problem associated with one front gaze point, we propose a method that allows a vehicle to steer smoothly when turning at intersection. We performed an experiment using an actual vehicle under the same conditions as those used in the simulation. The results confirmed the validity of our proposed method because the target steering angles at each corner and the driving trajectory of the actual vehicle were almost the same as those obtained using the simulation.

This article demonstrates that the happy ending of The House of the Seven Gables is appropriate, not ironical, nor catering to the readers' optimistic tastes of the times, by investigating the next three points : (1)the change of Holgrave's way of thinking which goes with his spiritual growth (2) the social background of nineteenth-century America which was infested with mesmerism and also with land struggle, and (3)the characterization of Phoebe as someone with strong 'poise' with which she can lead a wholesome life even in the age of the coming industrial capitalism. The key to Holgrave's spiritual growth lies in the acceptance of his own desire rather than in the control of it. This was because he had a prejudice that he was free from any desire. That acceptance makes him give up his position as a 'cold observer' and get into the 'magnetic chain of humanity' by owning a family and estate. The marriage between Holgrave with a 'democratic spirit, ' who has accepted his own desire and his sinfulness, and Phoebe with a 'knack' for living, indicates the possibility of renewal for American society, which was then thrown into confusion with the rapid expansion of industrial capitalism. Their union can be seen in larger terms as more than the reconciliation of the two families who hate each other.

This paper clarified an outline about the birth of Cyuou-douro street and the renewal process of buildings along the street and the change of vista. The improvement project of Cyuou-douro from 1922 to 1924 was the largest one in Nagano City of those days. The planning concept thought much of street view and vista toward Zenkouji-temple. Residents there also thought the appearance and fire prevention and built houses and stores. After then the redevelopment undertakings from 1970 to 2000 have made building height irregular and have spoiled the vista. Because the experience of the big project of about 80 years ago is peculiar to Nagano City, it is important to use it with caution for the future planning.

本稿は,グローバル化が日本のこれまでの言語教育/学習環境や言語能力の概念に及ぼしているインパクトについて分析を行う。その上で新しい言語学習環境の構築モデルとして「e-Lounge」「プルリリンガルラウンジ」と名付けられた慶應義塾大学日吉キャンパスでの互恵的複言語学習環境創出の試みを取り上げる。そのコンセプト化から実体化,複言語化のプロセスを示し,日本の教育機関に本質的に内在する単言語文化主義の問題の克服の可能性について考察を行う。
