In their paper of this issue, N. Tsuchiya and H. Saigo attempt to define consciousness on the basis of category theoretic notions. This commentary has three aims. The first is to clarify what exactly they mean by “the definition of consciousness”. The second is to examine to what extent their attempt is successful. The third is to suggest why category theory is considered to be useful to describe/define conscious phenomena.

男性による女性支配システムの構造解明や,そこに発生する権力関係のあぶり出しを目指すジェンダー研究は,いまや多様な学問領域に浸透している.地理学においても,1970年代に入ると,英語圏の女性研究者たちの間から,従来の地理学研究が男性中心主義に偏ったものであるとする批判がなされるとともに,空間に刻まれた男女の非対称の権力関係,すなわちジェンダー関係をあぶり出す作業が行われるようになった.本稿ではまず,英語圏を中心としたジェンダー研究の展開を整理する.次に,日本の地理学におけるこの方面の研究をもとに,これまでの到達点を明らかにする.さらに,個人レベルの男女間に潜む権力関係に着目し,それがより大きな権力関係へと転化され空間に刻まれ,そして,またそれが,空間に映し出されていることを示すため,二つの事例をあげる.一つは,大都市圏郊外につくられた「監視空間」ともいうべき住宅地におけるジェンダー関係であり,もう一つは,1950年代に軍事基地の建設が本格化した沖縄で,米兵相手につくられた特飲街にみられるジェンダー関係である.

診断とは,患者に起こっている現象を医学知識に照らし正確に解釈する作業である.我々は,問診,診察からの情報をもとに鑑別診断を挙げ,診断を確定する.このプロセスでは,主に2つのプロセス,パターン認識と分析的推論を使い分けている.正しい診断を行うためには,実践を積み,それをフィードバックし,理論的知識・実践知を系統立てて整理していくことが必要である.

I hypothesized that plosive perception contributes to speech perception of Japanese. I have noted that Shanghai speakers with the voicing contrast yet with a modest knowledge of Japanese grammar are generally higher in listening comprehension than Mandarin speakers without the voicing contrast but with a higher knowledge of Japanese grammar. In order to verify this hypothesis, I examined the relationship between the plosive perception and speech perception of the two groups. Results indicate that confusion in plosive consonants is a factor contributing to the confusion of speech perception and, especially, that confusion in voiceless plosive [t] and [k], whose frequencies are the two highest in Japanese speech, is a significant factor preventing Mandarin speakers from perceiving Japanese speech.

<p>In this paper, I examined hate speech as aggressive behavior from the perspective of social diagnosis and treatment. As the "symptom," I examined whether hate speech is aggression, what kind of psychological and social damage it causes, and what characters it has as vicarious aggression. Next, as the "cause," I examined psychological process of retaliation and its psychological reward. Finally, as the "treatment," I argued the need for social regulation of emotion, establishment of the law for hate speech, and I examined the expected effect on weakening hate speech and restoration of social order from a social psychology perspective.</p>

Fecal impaction is the impaired excretion of a large fecal mass, and mild cases are treated by enema and osmotic laxatives. However, treatment-resistant cases need more invasive alternatives. A woman in her 60s presented with abdominal discomfort. Her abdomen was soft and without tenderness. Computed tomography revealed a large mass of feces in her sigmoid colon and no intestinal dilatation proximal to the mass. Endoscopy confirmed a fecal mass occupying the lumen. A glycerin enema, oral administration of polyethylene glycol, and enteral administration of amidotrizoic acid during colonoscopy were ineffective. We maneuvered a guidewire to form a loop at the tip of an endoscope, with which we subdivided the mass for successful removal. The patient’s abdominal discomfort disappeared immediately. Endoscopic disimpaction is far less invasive than surgery and should be considered when treating fecal impaction cases, without severe obstructive colitis, which are nonresponsive to conservative treatment.
