ABSTRACT: Numerous studies have documented that in cancer therapy flavonoids extracted from traditional Chinese medicine have anti-tumor activity or can enhance efficiency of chemotherapy in combination with chemotherapeutics. Thus, an awareness of flavonoids is needed by physicians and medical researchers. This review provides evidence about anti-hepatocellular carcinoma activity of flavonoids. First, as a common employed in vitro model, profile of HepG2 is shown. Second, the intracellular signaling pathways induced by flavonoids which inhibit the HepG2 cell line are summarized. Third, study situation of anti-HBV/HCV activity of flavonoids is shown. Our review is aimed at providing an understanding of anti-HBV/HCV activity and anti-HCC mechanisms of flavonoids, and an outlook on flavonoids application on cancer therapy.

We performed this study to understand the molecular basis underlying the antitumor effects of Saussurea lappa, Pharbitis nil, Plantago asiatica and Taraxacum mongolicum, which have been used for herbal medicinal treatments against cancers in East Asia. We analyzed the effects of these medicinal herbs on proliferation and on expression of cell growth/apoptosis related molecules, with using an AGS gastric cancer cell line. The treatments of Saussurea lappa and Pharbitis nil dramatically reduced cell viabilities in a dose and time-dependent manner, but Plantago asiatica and Taraxacum mongolicum didn't. FACS analysis and Annexin V staining assay also showed that both Saussurea lappa and Pharbitis nil induce apoptotic cell death of AGS. Expression analyses via RT-PCR and Western blots revealed that Saussurea lappa, but not Pharbitis nil, increased expression of the p53 and its downstream effector p21Waf1, and that the both increased expression of apoptosis related Bax and cleavage of active caspase-3 protein. We also confirmed the translocation of Bax to mitochondria. Collectively, our data demonstrate that Saussurea lappa and Pharbitis nil induce growth inhibition and apoptosis of human gastric cancer cells, and these effects are correlated with down- and up-regulation of growth-regulating apoptotic and tumor suppressor genes, respectively.

This paper provides an overview of the habitat, natural resources, history, and socioeconomy of a small group of foragers called the Mikea who live in a semiarid forest environment of southwestern Madagascar. The flora and fauna of this forest are made up largely of rare, endemic species to Madagascar and the fragile environment is at risk of destruction by the process of desertification, particularly slash-and-burn agriculture and overgrazing by livestock. It is hypothesized that the Mikea persist as hunter-gatherers as an ecological and socioeconomic adaptation employing resource partitioning and mutualistic specialization with neighboring agropastoralists. Suggestions are proposed how to mitigate the detrimental affects of slash-and-burn cultivation.

抵抗器の抵抗値は,カラーコードの色によって分かる.抵抗器の色から抵抗値を読み取ることをコンピュータが代用できれば,その読み取りコストが小さくなる.本論文では,画像処理による抵抗器の読み取り方法を提案する.それは,まず抵抗器の実画像より色を抽出し,次にその色を識別する.色を識別する際に照明の影響を考慮することは重要である.そのため,3種類の照明状況(暗い状況,明るい状況,非常に明るい状況)で実験を行った.また,色の高精度な識別のために10種類の色空間(RGB,XYZ,YCbCr,YIQ,HSI,HSV,HLS,L^*u^*v^*,L^*a^*b^*,I1I2I3)を調べた.実験結果より,提案手法の有効性を示した.抵抗器の抵抗値をより高精度に読み取るためには,より照明の明るい環境の下で色識別にはL^*u^*v^*,L^*a^*b^*,I1I2I3色特徴を用いることが効果的であることが分かった.

肝硬変を伴った非外傷性脳出血9症例について臨床的に検討した.男性が7例と多く,肝硬変の原因はC型肝炎ウイルスが4例と多かった.脳出血の部位は,大脳皮質下出血が4例で最も多かった.術前の血小板数は,全例で底下しており,PT・APTTを術前に測定できた6例中,PT延長を2例に認めた.開頭血腫除去術が2例に行われたが,出血傾向による合併症を生じた.穿頭血腫ドレナージ術は3例行われ,いずれも補充療法を併用し,術後経過は良好であった.長期経過は,肝不全,食道静脈瘤破裂などの肝硬変に直接起因する死亡例が3例あり,不良のものが多かった.独歩退院は,皮質下出血に対する穿頭血腫ドレナージ術後の2例のみであった.

Two types of photoelectric polarimeter, one of which is a direct reading polarimeter and the other an automatic polarimeter, have been developed to meet the requirement for rapid and continuous measurement of the optical rotation of optically active solution. In the direct reading polarimeter, each of two plane-polarized beams passes through either a standard liquid container or a sample container and a rotary analyzer, and finally impinges on a photomultiplier. Each of the two photomultipliers receives a flash of light modulated sinusoidally and generates a.c. signals, which are amplified and fed to the phasemeter. The output of the phasemeter indicates the optical rotational angle of the sample. The automatic polarimeter has two fixed analyzers and CdS cells. Each output of the cells is connected differentially and fed to a balancing motor which is connected mechanically to the polarizers. At first, the outputs of the two cells are balanced. When the samples are inserted into two optical paths, the motor rotates the polarizers until balance is restored. Each of the rotational angles of the polarizers indicates the optical rotational angle of the sample. The direct reading polarimeter and automatic polarimeter have an over-all accuracy within about±1% and are handy so that they are suitable for the use in the factory.

PHS,携帯電話などを利用したワイヤレス通信環境においてもマルチメディア通信を行いたいという要求がある.しかし,現在のワイヤレス通信環境には帯域幅が狭い,バースト誤りやハンドオフにより転送が途切れる,帯域幅や誤り率などの品質が頻繁に変化するなどの問題があり,比較的大容量の帯域幅と安定した品質を必要とするマルチメディア通信の扱いは難しい.我々は,コンテンツ内の重要な情報を優先して受信者に提供する選択的マルチメディア通信方式SMAPを提案している.SMAPは,マルチメディア情報の各映像フレーム,音声ブロックに対して,その意味的な重要度に基づいた優先度を4段階で与える.優先度に基づいた選択的転送を行うことで,帯域幅が不足している状態でも重要な部分は比較的高い品質で提供することができる.本研究は,SMAPのネットワークサービスを提案する.SMAPネットワークサービスは,バッファリングとQoSの保証を行うことでアプリケーションとユーザに対してより安定した品質のネットワークサービスを提供する.Users desire to use multimedia applications such as browsing WWW and VoD in not only desktop computing environment but also wireless or mobile computing environment. A wireless link, however, is generally poor in quality to accommodate multimedia communication. We've proposed a content-based multimedia access protocol, SMAP, for wireless environment. It adopts the selective transport service according to content-based priority, assigned to each set of video frames and audio samples in multimedia data, so that a user can get important information even if available bandwidth is insufficient for the multimedia data. This paper describes SMAP Network Service providing a multimedia application with more stable network service by the buffering and guarantee of QoS(Quality of Service such as a frame-rate of video and a continuous-playback period).
