The Tokaido Shinkansen began operating in 1964 and ran at globally unprecedented speeds of more than 200 kmph. Comparison with the operating speed of aircraft necessitated further improvement of the operating speed of Shinkansen. Nevertheless, there was no improvement until 20 years. During that period, the maximum speed of test cars, the highest technically feasible speed, improved. Rather than technical factors, the following social and organizational factors impeded the improvement of the operating speed. (1) The social factor was the prioritization of environmental countermeasures to improvements in speed because of the noise pollution lawsuits and noise regulation. (2) The organizational factor was the need to secure the slack time due to frequent strikes and delays when Shinkansen was managed by Japan National Railways (JNR). However, around the time of the splitting and privatization of JNR in 1987, noise regulation was relaxed and lawsuits were settled. Furthermore, the labor movement settled down with the privatization of JNR; consequently, labor unions were dismantled. These events resolved preventive factors and led to the improvement of operating speeds.

In this work, three experiments are conducted. In a realistic environment (freeway), a database for the noise dynamics versus velocity in a motorcycle helmet is computed. Next, under the controlled conditions of an anechoic chamber, the models for the feedback (FB) and feedforward (FF) paths in the helmet are obtained by a filtering and identification process. Finally, in the same chamber, a hybrid (FB+FF) robust controller is tested against the actual noise measured in the freeway, and it achieves attenuations between 20 and 30 dB.

In order to estimate the water stress of a plant, the natural frequency of the leaf-stalk system was investigated. As a means of vibrating the leaf, acoustic radiation force was utilized, and the successive measurement of the natural frequency of ``komatsuna'', which was cultivated in a pot of soil, was performed for a week until wilting after stopping irrigation. As a result, it was found that the natural frequency is decreased drastically by the wilting of the leaf before the drooping occurs. In addition, daily variation was also observed in the early days, but it was gradually suppressed as the day went on. These behaviors were discussed referring to a simple cantilever beam model. In conclusion, it was ascertained that the acoustic radiation force is efficient for vibrating a leaf-stalk system. Furthermore, it was confirmed that measuring the natural frequency of the leaf-stalk system is effective for the early detection of water stress of a plant.

Pharmacists, being compensated through the new dispensing fee, are required to educate patients on their adhesion to the use of prescribed drugs, and to inventory the levels of leftover drugs in outpatients. Recently, Fukuoka City Pharmaceutical Association started a campaign for regulating leftover drugs (Setsuyaku Bag Campaign). Thirty-one pharmacies joined the campaign. Pharmacists distributed convenience bags, called ‘SETSUYAKU-BAG.’ The patients put their leftover drugs in the bags and brought them to community pharmacies. The pharmacists inventoried the returned drugs and reported their results to the doctors. The doctors adjusted the prescriptions accordingly. We counted and analyzed old and new inventories. The number of leftover drugs was 252, for a total value was ¥839655. Cost of leftover drug prescriptions could be reduced by ¥702695, and the value of drugs thrown away was ¥94801. In total, we could reduce the amount of leftover drugs by 83.7%. The cost of leftover drug for one dose package (ODP) is higher than that for non-ODP. However, there were no significant differences in results per age, sex, number and kinds of drugs, prescription days and premium contribution rate. These results suggest that prescription regulation by inventory of leftover drugs in community pharmacies could significantly reduce overall medical expenses. Further studies are necessary in order to account for patients’ health, and to establish more efficient patient education to raise outpatients’ adherence to the new programs.

Tables 1, 2 and 3 show the accent patterns of Kyoto Japanese at three stages of its development or simplification. Here H means that the pattern begins with the High Register, while L means that the pattern begins with the Low Register. (The Register is of no use in the description of Tokyo Japanese.) The marks "["and"]" indicate the points of Up-Turn and Down-Turn of the voice pitch. The Down-Turn may be interpreted as the Accent Kernel when it is culminative, that is when it has no cunterpart - Up-Turn, as is the case of Modern Japanese. The letter r in the example of Section 3.1 stands for the Rising Inclination (a rise in an undecided manner), and the letter n expresses the negation of it. In short, n means an almost even tone. The letter t in Section 4.1 means the Tense Inclination, and n here means "not tense" or a slow falling tone.

若年健康女性にみられる深吸気の Vmax 増加効果と basal bronchomotor tone の関係にっいて, partial and maximum expiratory flow-volume curve を用いて検討した. 深吸気の Vmax 増加効果は, ipratropium bromide によるPEF₂₅の増加率 (r=-0.81, p<0.0002) および salbutamol によるPEF₂₅の増加率 (r=-0.62, p<0.01) と有意の相関を示した. 深吸気の Vmax 増加効果の日差変動は, PEF₂₅の日差変動と有意 (r=0.68,p<0.005) に相関したが, MEF₂₅の日差変動とは相関しなかった. 以上より, 若年健康女性における深吸気の Vmax 増加効果は, 迷走神経緊張による basal bronchomotor tone が亢進しているためにみられる現象と考えた.
