Ontological considerations about part-of relations have been extensively investigated because they are basic and important relationships for ontology building. Although there are various discussions on kinds of part-of and their ontological characteristics, there remains some room for discussing a couple of fundamental issues such as “What is a part?” and “When is a part-of relation composed?” This paper discusses ontology patterns of descriptions of part-of relationships on the basis of ontological theories in order to provide practitioners with useful guidelines for descriptions of part-of structurers. This paper focuses on ontology patterns which capture commonality and special characteristics of parts so that complicated structures of physical objects are described appropriately. We discuss four problems related to descriptions of parts. 1) interdependence between the whole and its parts, 2) kinds of parts such as components, portions and materials, 3) multiple inheritance according to substance and properties of parts, 4) the commonality and specificity of parts. To cope with these problems, this paper introduces a part representation model based on ontological theory of roles. The main idea of the part representation model is to distinguish between a part dependent on its whole and the context-independent properties of the part. The former is defined as the role-holder which plays roles and the latter is defined as the player of the role. The role defines properties of the part which is dependent on its whole. These three kinds of definitions enable to describe differences of various properties of parts according to their context dependence. We show how this model is used to describe various parts through practical examples of the anatomical structure of human body developed in the medical ontology project in Japan.

An 11-year-old cat presented with nasal discharge and lacrimation and was diagnosed with nasal lymphoma. Although the cat showed favorable progression after undergoing chemotherapy, CT imaging demonstrated enlarged pulmonary nodules caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Following the cessation of chemotherapy, the cat was prescribed clindamycin hydrochloride for toxoplasmosis treatment; however, the cat developed kidney lymphoma and died. No T. gondii organisms were observed in the whole body necropsy specimens. It is known that immunocompromised human patients, including those who undergo chemotherapy, are considered at risk for toxoplasmosis. However, the risk of developing toxoplasmosis in cats undergoing chemotherapy is currently unknown. Findings from this case report suggest that cats with chemotherapy-resistant pulmonary masses might have a T. gondii infection rather than metastatic disease.

This study was undertaken to establish a method for measuring mRNA expression by using real-time RT-PCR in the diagnosis of canine meningiomas. When performing real-time RT-PCR, it is essential to include appropriate control tissues and to select appropriate housekeeping genes as an internal standard. Based on the results of our study, RPS18 constitutes a suitable internal standard for the comparison of mRNA expression between normal meninges and meningiomas. The results showed increased mRNA expression of VEGFA and EGFR; however, mRNA expression of KDR was reduced. Measuring mRNA expression by using real-time RT-PCR with appropriate control tissues and internal standards can provide useful information to understanding the pathogenesis of canine meningiomas, which corresponds with immunohistochemical findings.

This study focused on the problem of food leftover waste. A case study of a South Korean institution was undertaken from the point of view of the food waste reduction capability together with public hygiene and culinary culture. It was shown that South Korean meter-rate based charging system and recycling system are politically unified by the framework of Comprehensive Countermeasures of Food Waste Reduction Institution. Further, it is clear that a positive effect was brought about in the management not only in public recycle facilities but also in private facilities.Moreover, it was shown that the checks and publicity by the NPO organizing the “MATTABI CAMPAIGN” (to eat food thankfully) were also a success factor in this management. South Korea's experience has shown that institutions can promote the integration at a national level by implication.

The resource-based view (RBV) has recently been attracting attention as a framework for entrepreneurship study. The present work presents an RBV analysis of the growth process of ACCESS Co., Ltd. as an example of Japanese high-tech start-ups. The company had limited resources at the time of foundation, and had been threatened by the mortarity risk until a certain level of resource accumulation was achieved. ACCESS has, however, successfully overcome such a risk by pursuing more than one stable business lines in parallel, and building up technical expertise, while managing R & D activities so as to avoid the threats of Microsoft. The competitive edge and growth of the company result from the management capability to make right decisions, and from the identification, accumulation and enhancement of its core competence.

本研究では,近年増加する社会問題(e.g.,未成年による犯罪,いじめ,虐待)の原因究明と解決への手がかりを得るために,人と人との「絆」に着目した。まず,「絆」現象を深く理解するために,「絆」についてのイメージや態度に関するステートメントを自由記述法で収集し,それらの内容分析を通じて,5つのカテゴリーを確認した。つぎに,それらのカテゴリーに基づいて母子間の絆尺度を作成し,194名の母子(ペア)を対象に「絆」意識を測定し,その回答を因子分析にかけた結果,4つの「絆」因子が抽出された。これらの意識と関係満足度との関係から,肯定的な情緒的先行要因と自然発生的な安定性認識が母子関係の満足度を向上させることが明らかになった。

本稿は、江戸の町における迷子の保護について分析を行ったものである。迷子は捨子と同様に近世後期には主要な都市問題の一つになっていた。それは、捨子に準じ、親類・縁者・養父母が見つかるまで養育しなくてはならず、その費用を町入用から捻出したからである。こうした町の負担を軽減すべく、安政四年(一八五七)、町の有志によって一石橋に迷子石が建立された。これは迷子情報を手軽に広めることができる方法だったため、明治初年にかけて各町に次々と迷子石が建てられることになった。本稿では迷子石建立をめぐる手続きを分析し、迷子保護に対する町奉行所と町人たちの意識の差異、迷子石の社会的意義について考える。
