Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) have been generated from somatic cells by introducing reprogramming factors. Integration of foreign genes into the host genome is a technical hurdle for the clinical application. Here, we show that Sendai virus (SeV), an RNA virus and carries no risk of altering host genome, is an efficient solution for generating safe iPSC. Sendai-viral human iPSC expressed pluripotency genes, showed demethylation characteristic of reprogrammed cells. SeV-derived transgenes were decreased during cell division. Moreover, viruses were able to be easily removed by antibody-mediated negative selection utilizing cell surface marker HN that is expressed on SeV-infected cells. Viral-free iPSC differentiated to mature cells of the three embryonic germ layers in vivo and in vitro including beating cardiomyocytes, neurons, bone and pancreatic cells. Our data demonstrated that highly-efficient, non-integrating SeV-based vector system provides a critical solution for reprogramming somatic cells and will accelerate the clinical application.(Communicated by Kumao TOYOSHIMA, M.J.A.)

We investigated features of the atmosphere and ocean to seek a possible candidate that suppressed the growth of the El Niño event in 2014. In the boreal summer-fall season, equatorially antisymmetric sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies with a positive (negative) sign to the north (south) of the equator prevailed in the central and eastern tropical Pacific. In association with the SST anomalies, cumulus convective activity was enhanced in the region of the climatological Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Anomalous southerly surface winds flowing across the equator toward the ITCZ induced upward latent heat flux anomalies and lowered SST in the near-equatorial region. These coherent spatial patterns between SST, wind, and latent heat flux anomalies suggested that the wind-evaporation-SST (WES) feedback sustained the suppression of the El Niño growth. A linear baroclinic model experiment indicated that the enhanced convective heating in the ITCZ also contributed to sustain the anomalous surface southerlies across the equator by the intense meridional atmospheric circulation over the equator. These results indicate that the anomalous southerlies across the equator sustained by the WES feedback and intense convective heating in the ITCZ contributed to the suppression of the El Niño growth.

コンパイラの構文解析器に広く使用されているLR構文解析の原理を解説する.LR構文解析の基礎をなすアイデアは,「正規言語の解析手法を繰り返し使い,文脈自由文法の幅広いクラスを解析する」という(多くの優れたアイデアがそうであるように)単純なものである.Knuthは,この直感的で単純なアイデアを基礎とし,緻密な理論的な展開と巧みな実用化戦略によって,構文解析におけるブレークスルーを達成した.本解説では,LR構文解析が基礎とするアイデアに即してその原理とアルゴリズムの構造を解説する.これらを理解するならば,一般に複雑で難解なものと受け取られているLR構文解析法の全体像が容易に理解できるはずである.本解説では,オートマトンの基礎知識を持つ一般の読者が,LR構文解析の考え方と原理を理解できることを目指す.

Optimum conditions for obtaining tetraploid were investigated in raphanobrassica, the intergeneric hybrid between radish (Raphanus sativus) and kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) by treating in vitro plants with an anti-mitotic agent, amiprophosmethyl (APM). Initially, no tetraploids but hexaploids and octaploids were induced by the treatments. Although the leaves of these polyploids of raphanobrassica showed chlorosis during subcultures in in vitro conditions, the chlorosis could be successfully prevented by the ethylene inhibitors, both AVG and AgNO3. Based on this result, AVG was added into medium used for the culture after the chromosome doubling treatment, which subsequently resulted in increased survival rates of the treated plant materials as well as increased production rates of polyploids including tetraploid. These polyploid plants showed obviously different characters from the original diploid plant. The tetraploid plant had bigger sizes in shoot, flower and leaf, and more number of leaves than the diploid. On the other hand, the hexaploid and octaploid plants had smaller sizes in shoots and leaves, and less number of leaves than the diploid. Concentration of glucosinolates, functional substances of Brassicaceae crops, did not significantly differ between diploid and tetraploid of raphanobrassica, but reduced in hexaploid and octaploid.

In June 1994, the world's first clinical center offering carbon ion radiotherapy opened at the National Institute of Radiological Science (NIRS), Japan. Among several types of ion species, carbon ions were chosen for cancer therapy because they were judged to have the most optimal properties in terms of superior physical and biological characteristics. As of March 2010, 5,196 patients have been registered for carbon ion radiotherapy. Clinical results have shown that carbon ion radiotherapy has the potential to provide a sufficient radiation dose to the tumor, while having acceptable morbidity in the surrounding normal tissues. Tumors that appear to respond favorably to carbon ions include locally advanced tumors as well as histologically non-squamous cell tumor types such as adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, malignant melanoma, hepatoma, and bone/soft tissue sarcoma. By taking advantage of the unique properties of carbon ions, treatment with small fractions within a short treatment period has been successfully carried out for a variety of tumors. This means that carbon ion radiotherapy can offer treatment for larger numbers of patients than is possible with other modalities over the same time period.

九三〇年頃の法と集会制度の成立から、一二六二/六四年のノルウェー王に対する臣従誓約に至るまでのアイスランドは、近代以降「自由国」と呼ばれ、大権を戴かない社会として知られている。本稿では、「自由国」とノルウェー王権受容との関係を再考する試みとして、アイスランド固有の散文物語「サガ」を主要史料とし、一三世紀のアイスランドにおける平和と権力の在り方を解析した。従来、一三世紀前半は、有力者間の権力闘争の激化により、王なき「自由国」を支えていた血讐(報復義務)を基盤とする平和維持システムに破綻を来す時期と捉えられてきた。しかし、ノルウェー王との関係も視野に入れると、支配者層に対し一定の発言力を保ち持ち続けていた農民集団が、新たな「平和維持者」としてノルウェー王を選択した可能性も窺える。また、王権受容後に関しては、王による法制度の改編のみに考察が偏ってきたが、同時期を描くサガに着目すると、血讐の存続も確認される一方、ノルウェー王の裁判権が直接対面することのない農民層にも徐々に拡大してゆく様子がみてとれる。すなわち、二二世紀アイスランドは、ノルウェー王権をも構成要素のひとつとする平和維持システムの緩やかな変容過程にあったのである。
