The northeastern part of the Kantô plain, which is the largest plain in Japan, has many terraces as shown in the geomorphological map (fig. 1).In this paper, the landdforms and the geological structures of these terraces are described as below.(1) General characteristics of the terraces.The above area is divi ed into two topographic regions by the Yamizo mountain range running from north to south. The estern part is practically made up of marine Pleistocene strata. On the other hand, the western part has many river terraces which are formed by fluvial gravels and volcanic ashes.(2) Dating of the terraces by tephrochronology (tehro means volcanic ashes).During the Quaternary period, the terraces had been covered by volcanic ash layers called Kanto Loam. Presently the older terraces and the newer ones both are covered by thick and thin Loams respectively. This relationship between terrace and Loam makes it possible to date the land surfaces chronologically. Through this the author obtained the following chronological table.(3) The river terraces built by eolian volcanic ashes.The western area is chiseled off by many river terraces. In the northern part of this terraces region, the relative heights of terrace surfaces from the preseat flood plain are higher than that of the southern part. But, if the volcanic ashes on the whole terraces are stripped off, the surfaces of the terraces have practically no significant heights, In other words, the higher the terraces, the thicker the volcanic ashes are as shown in Fig. 4, In conclusion, these river terraces would be called “Eolian volcanic ash terraces”.

This paper aims to analyze the placement of punctuation marks, especially commas and periods, in relation to quotation marks.   It suggests that the most striking point within the quote-punctuation placement is the difference between the British and American usages in the case of commas and periods. Universal American usage places commas and periods inside the quotation marks, regardless of logic, while in the British usage, punctuation marks go inside quotation marks if they relate to the words quoted, outside if they relate to the main sentence. Why the difference? It appears that the British usage upholds logic, while the American one follows convention.   The findings are mainly based on the examination of articles of some major American and British newspapers as well as of stylebooks of leading U.S. wireservices.

本研究では,人にとって分かりやすい,受け入れやすい擬人化エージェントを開発するため,表情,視線などの非言語表現と印象,行動履歴に基づいたエージェント行動モデルを提案する.新しいモデルでは,喜びや悲しみといった擬人化エージェントの表情やその利用履歴が,人の誠実性,友好性や有能性という印象を形成し,エージェントと協力行動をとるかとらないかの人の意思決定に影響を与えるとする.本研究では,現実のコミュニケーション場面の一部を切り出した交渉ゲームを設計し,擬人化エージェントの非言語情報を制御し,ゲーム中の人の行動を分析することでモデルを確かめる.実験の結果,非言語表現やその行動履歴が印象を形成し,意思決定に強く影響を与えることが分かり,提案するモデルが部分的に人の意思決定行動を説明することが分かった.本手法は擬人化エージェントにどのような状況でどの非言語表現をすべきかの設計することに役立つ.

構文解析や用語標準化などの自然言語処理を目的とする440,000語規模のシソーラスを開発した.このシソーラスでは,各用語の持つ関係語の数が膨大なため,観点(ファセット)を導入して分類し,採択した用語を探しやすくしてある.また,差別語,表記の揺れなども区別できるようにするなど工夫をこらしている.本稿ではこのシソーラスについて,パッケージソフトのカスタマイズ機能およびインターネットや他の辞書との連動機能,用語の標準化などについても紹介した.シソーラスを作成する際の留意点と課題をも指摘する.

This article considers the definition of discriminatory language and related problems. Aspects considered are the history of discrimination which is reflected in discriminatory language, the intentional use of discriminatory language to oppose discrimination and, how the language points to the existence of discrimination. The limitations of discriminatory language being viewed as a legal problem are clarified, as is the necessity for dialog between the majority and minorities to resolve these issues. It is necessary to radically change the current social structures and social relations that cause discrimination in order to achieve a solution to this problem.

The September 2004 eruptions of Asama volcano, central Japan, ejected essential materials such as pumice with bread crust on September 1st and scoria on September 23rd. The textural and chemical analyses on the materials reveal the crystallization processes in a deep magma chamber and a shallow vent. Two distinct stages of crystallization can be recognized in size distributions and morphology of plagioclase phenocryst and microlite both in the pumice and scoria. First stage (range I ): In a deep magma chamber, pyroxene phenocryst began to crystallize out at 1150℃, and then pyroxene and plagioclase continued to nucleate and grow slowly. Second stage (range II) is divided into two sub-stages for pyroxene or three (range IIa-c) for plagioclase. II a: Magma left the chamber and rose slowly through the vent with ever increasing nucleation rate. II b-c: In a shallow vent beneath the crater, numerous plagioclase microlites like swallow-tailed shape precipitated rapidly under a high undercooling condition induced by decompression. Plagioclase microlite in the pumice and scoria developed a characteristic population density like a bell with a peak at the grain size of 0.003mm, which is interpreted to reflect a decrease in nucleation rate of plagioclase, in response to crystallization and establishment of equilibrium during the time duration when the magma stayed in the vent. Magmatic temperatures estimated from plagioclase-glass equilibrium decreased to 850℃ before the September 1st eruption. The similarity in crystal size distribution of the pumice and scoria implies that they had a common ascent history, although groundmass in the scoria has lower crystallinity than that in the pumice, suggesting that the magma of the Sept. 23rd eruption stood lower in the magma column than the Sept. 1st magma.
