Device Comfort is a concept that uses an enhanced notion of trust to allow a personal (likely mobile) device to better reason about the state of interactions and actions between it, its owner, and the environment. This includes allowing a better understanding of how to manage information in fine-grained context as well as addressing the personal security of the user. To do this, it forms a unique relationship with the user, focusing on the device's judgment of user in context. This paper introduces and defines Device Comfort, including an examination of what makes up the comfort of a device in terms of trust and other considerations, and discusses the uses of such an approach. It also presents some ongoing developmental work in the concept, and an initial formal model of Device Comfort, its makeup and behaviour.

2009年11月末に来日以来、金氏は、日本帝国にとって最も重要な(他者)であった朝鮮人を、植民時時代の人類学者たちがどのように位置づけたかに関する研究に力を注ぎ、その研究成果を精力的に発表してきました。金氏がドイツの歴史研究者たちと企画した討論「Asia,Germany,and Transnational Turn」は、イギリスの重要な学術誌であるGerman Historyの2010年12月号に記載されました。この論文で金氏は、ドイツ史を世界史的な視点から再評価する必要性を力説しつつ、中国にのみ関心を集中されている最近のドイツ人研究者たちが、19世紀末のドイツ-アジア関係で最も重要な位置を占めていた「ドイツ-日本」間の複雑な多面的な交流を見落としていると指摘しました。また、金氏は、さらに二つの学術論文を仕上げ、国内外の学会で発表しました。金氏が昨年10月にサンフランシスコで開催されたドイツの学会にて発表した論文「Measuring Asianncss : Erwin Baelz's Anthropological Expeditions in Fin-de-Siecle Korea」は、日本の近代医学の父といわれるE・ベルツが1899年、1902年、1903年の3回にわたっておこなった朝鮮人種研究に関する、初の本格的な学術研究です。この論文では金氏は、アジアの諸人種間の階層とその相互関連性を強調したベルツの人種研究が、その後の人種に関する言説に非常に大きな影響を与えたことを実証しています。この論文は加筆修正の上、2011年に出版予定のM.Richl&V.Fuechtner eds.German-Asian Cultural Studiesの1章として刊行される予定です(その他の研究発表については、下記「11.研究発表」を参照のこと)。

Western medicine has only recently discovered that the intestinal microbiota is a major determinant of the well-being of the host. Although it would be oversimplifying to limit the benefits of breastfeeding compared to cow milk based infant formula to differences in gastrointestinal flora, the impact of the latter has been demonstrated beyond doubt. As a consequence, gastro intestinal flora manipulation with pre- and probiotics added to infant formula or food (mainly milk based products) and/or with food supplements have become a priority area of high quality research. The composition of intestinal microbiota can be manipulated with "biotics": antibiotics, prebiotics and probiotics. Commercialised pre- and probiotic products differ in composition and dose. Major threats to the concept of developing a major role for intestinal microbiota manipulation on health are the commercialisation of products claiming health benefits that have not been validated. Legislation of food supplements and medication differs substantially and allows commercialisation of poor quality food supplements, what will result in negative experiences. Medicinal products can only be advertised for which there is scientific proof of benefit that has been demonstrated with "the same product with the same dose in the same indication". Specificity of prebiotics and probiotics strains and product specificity are of importance, although high quality evidence for this assertion is missing. Dose-efficacy studies are urgently needed. Probiotics are "generally regarded as safe", but side effects such as septicemia and fungemia have sometimes been reported in high-risk situations.

Uranium is toxic to the human body with mechanisms not fully understood. The interaction between uranyl ion (UO22+) and ubiquitin (Ub) was predicted by molecular modeling, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and steered molecular dynamics (SMD) simulation. The structural and dynamics consequences, as well as protein unfolding behavior, upon uranyl binding to two surface residues of Ub, Glu18 and Asp21, were revealed at an atomic level. This in silico study exhibits a possibility of UO22+ binding to Ub, providing a possible mechanism of uranyl toxicity in vivo.

Background: B vitamins, including vitamin B6, are coenzymes that are important for DNA integrity and stability. Deficiencies in B vitamins may promote tumor carcinogenesis.Methods: We examined the association of dietary vitamin B6 intake with overall breast cancer risk and breast cancers stratified by hormone receptor status. This case-control study included 391 breast cancer cases and 782 control subjects enrolled at the Tri-Service General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. Energy-adjusted intake of vitamin B6 was derived from a food frequency questionnaire. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using logistic regression.Results: As compared with women in the lowest tertile, the multivariate-adjusted ORs for breast cancer among women in the second and highest tertiles of vitamin B6 intake were 0.78 (95% CI, 0.64–2.52) and 0.64 (0.26–0.92), respectively. In addition, higher vitamin B6 intake was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing ER-negative breast tumors.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that higher intake of vitamin B6 is associated with a reduction in breast cancer risk, particularly ER-negative tumors.

本研究では,スパース信号に対する複数チャンネル標本化と,スパースサンプリングに基づく画像特徴量抽出に関する研究に取り組んだ.前者は主に初年度の課題であり,信号の事前分布とl1ノルム最小化原理をそれぞれ利用した2種類の信号再構成アルゴリズムを提案した.また,次年度は主に後者に取り組み,画像に含まれる直線エッジの完全抽出アルゴリズムを開発した.そして,提案手法の雑音耐性が従来手法より約10dB優れていることを計算機実験により示した.

Flavangenol (FG), an extract of French maritime pine bark (Pinus maritime) mainly contains proanthocyanidin in oligomers. It has many physiological effects, including antioxidant and anti-atherosclerosis. In this study, we evaluated the effects of FG on rat collagen-induced arthritis, a model of human rheumatoid arthritis. The rats were fed with the diet of control, 0.3% FG, or 1% FG for 4 wk after the induction of arthritis. The FG diets, compared with the control diet, suppressed the increase in arthritic score and swelling of the paws in a dose-dependent manner. Histopathological examination revealed evidence that the 1% FG diet suppressed acute and chronic articular lesions in the rats. In addition, the FG diets (0.3% and 1%) suppressed the production of nitric oxide in the plasma of the rats. These results suggest that dietary FG has beneficial effects on collagen-induced arthritis in rats by inhibiting the acute and chronic inflammatory reactions.

Capsaicin is a pungent element in a variety of red peppers that are widely used as food additives and considered to be an antimicrobial factor. For our tests, we used yeast DNA micro-array methods to understand the mechanisms of inhibitory effects of capsaicin. The capsaicin treatment significantly induced 39 genes from approximately 6,000 genes. These induced genes were classified as multi-drug resistance transporter genes, membrane biosynthesis genes, genes encoding stress proteins, and uncharacterized genes. The growth abilities of the strains with the deletion of the induced genes suggest that capsaicin is pumped out of the yeast cells by the PDR5 transporter.

In this paper, the resistive switching effects in ZnO whiskers are reported. The resistive switching properties were studied by current controlled current--voltage ($I$--$V$) sweeps. On increasing the biasing current value, the resistance of the ZnO whiskers switches from high resistance state (HRS) to low resistance state (LRS). Between the HRS and LRS, anomalous resistance fluctuations were observed during the resistive transition. These resistive switching effects were studied for ZnO whiskers of different diameters. It was observed that resistive switching depends on the diameter of the ZnO whisker. As the diameter of a ZnO whisker decreases, the resistance switching increases. The mechanism of the observed resistive switching is also proposed.

The effect of the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) treatment on the hybrid layer durability of total-etch dentin adhesives was investigated. A flat dentin surface was exposed and treated with 37% phosphoric acid or 0.1M EDTA. Dentin adhesive was applied and a 4 mm thick composite resin was built-up. Twenty 0.9×0.9 mm2 resin-dentin beams were fabricated in each experimental group. Artificial aging with 10% NaClO was performed in half of the experimental groups for 1 hour. A micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) test was performed and the bonded interface was analyzed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The 37% phosphoric acid-treated group showed a lower μTBS after artificial aging, whereas the 0.1M EDTA-treated group did not. TEM analysis revealed collagen fibrils dissolved in the 37% phosphoric acid-treated group but not in the 0.1M EDTA-treated group. Undissolved minerals were observed in the 0.1M EDTA-treated group. In conclusion, a dentin treatment with 0.1M EDTA is effective in improving the hybrid layer durability.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of visual biofeedback on the EMG ratio of the medial and lateral vasti muscles and on the lower extremity joint angles during squat exercises performed by subjects with femoral anteversion. [Subjects] Seventeen subjects (5 men, 12 women) with femoral anteversion participated in this study. [Methods] Subjects performed a double-leg squat with and without visual biofeedback using a laser beam fixed to a patella strap. The peak angles of hip internal rotation and knee valgus were analyzed using a 3D motion analysis system, and the vastus medialis oblique/vastus lateralis (VMO/VL) activity ratio was calculated using the value recorded by surface electromyography during the squat exercises. [Results] Significant decreases were found in the hip internal rotation angle and knee valgus angle, and a significant increase in the VMO/VL activity ratio was observed on the dominant side when performing a double-leg squat with visual biofeedback using a laser beam. [Conclusions] We suggest that laser-beam visual biofeedback would be used as an effective for improving VMO muscle strength and reducing the angle of hip internal rotation and knee valgus during squat exercises.

Three new flavonoid derivatives, 6′′′-O-acetyl amurensin (1), 6′′′-O-acetyl phellamurin (3) and (2R)-phellodensin-F (5), together with thirty known compounds have been isolated from the leaves of Phellodendron japonicum MAXIM. Their structures were established by means of spectroscopic analysis, including extensive 2D NMR and Mass spectra. The known compounds were identified by comparison with published physical and spectral data. The isolated compounds were screened for their in vitro antioxidant activity through DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay. Compounds quercetin and phellodenin-A demonstrated significant radical scavenging activity.

有機デバイスの根幹物質であるペンタセン(Pn)の、グラファイト(HOPG)およびルチル型二酸化チタン(110)(ルチルTiO_2)上における真空蒸着による薄膜成長を低速電子顕微鏡/電子線回折装置を用いてin-situ観察した。Pn薄膜は、基板や作成条件を制御により、デバイス特性上好ましいとされるstanding-up構造(立配向)を作成可能なことが報告されているが、真空蒸着では成長した薄膜結晶同士のお互いに阻害するために、輸送特性上好ましくないドメイン境界をもった多結晶となる。本課題では、Pn薄膜が速度論的にa軸に比べてb軸が優先的に成長しやすいことに着目し、基板、温度の最適化による解決を試みた。HOPG表面は、Pnの主骨格であるベンゼン環だけから構成される表面であり、Pnとの相互作用が強く働く系である。この表面上への室温における蒸着の結果は、第一層にPnの濡れ層が形成された後、様々な配向をとる多結晶状態となった。また、Pnの吸着、脱着が平衡状態となる90℃においても制御できなかった。一方、Pnと基板の相互作用が弱い系では、濡れ層から立ち配向への自発的な転移が、Pn間の強い配向安定性から起こることが報告されている。ルチル型TiO_2は、無機物であるためにこの系に該当すると予想され、また表面再構成の結果[001]方向に一次元の酸素原子列をもつ凹凸を持つため、種結晶の初期形成を制御が期待される。作成条件の最適化の結果、Pnは表面の原子ステップ上に沿った成長、および濡れ層から1層目から結晶方向の揃った立配向への転移が起こることや、b軸成長が支配的な成長モードであることを確認したが、もともと基板表面上に存在する格子欠陥や局所的なアイランド構造から形成された異なる配向も同時に確認された。この制御のためには、表面が原子レベルで綺麗な幾何構造をもっパターン基板を用いる必要があることがわかった。

Most often dry powder for inhalation are formulated as ordered mixtures of a carrier excipient and a micronized drug substance. In the present study, model powder blends were prepared from a mixture of lactose α-monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose pellets or synthesized sugar as carrier particles, and micronized salbutamol sulfate (SS). These ordered mixtures were aerosolized by the multidose JAGO dry powder inhaler (DPI) and their in vitro deposition properties were evaluated by a twin impinger (TI). The separation force between SS particles and carrier particles was investigated by the centrifuge method. In addition, the use of the air jet sieve (AJS) method was investigated to assess the separation behavior of drug particles from carrier excipient. Powder blends were sieved through a 325 mesh wire screen of an air jet sieve at an air pressure of 1500 Pa. The amount of drug deposited at the carrier surface was analysed before and after the sieving to calculate the percentage of the drug retained. A relationship was found between in vitro deposition properties (fine particle fraction, FPF) and the separation characteristics obtained by the centrifuge method and by the AJS method. The AJS method might be a suitable alternative for evaluating separation of a drug particle from carrier particles and hence can be used for the formulation screening of the dry powder inhalation.
