Turfgrasses may inhibit germination and growth of weeds through competition for such as water, nutrients, light and space, and also through allelopathy. Manilagrass is an important warm-season turfgrass, but no information is available on the allelopathic effect of manilagrass on weeds. Since water is the solvent for extraction of allelochemicals in nature, in this study aqueous extracts of shoots and decomposing manilagrass were examine for allelopathic potential.

1982年から88年にかけてニューファウンドランド沿岸で冬期に採集した5種の海鴨(ホンケワタガモ,ケワタガモ,クロガモ,コオリガモ,シノリガモ)の食性と消化器官(砂嚢重量,小腸•盲腸の長さ)を調査した。5種類ともほとんど動物質の餌を食べていたが,ホンケワタガモ,ケワタガモ,クロガモが貝類とウニ類を高い割合で食べていたのに対し,コオリガモとシノリガモは等脚類と端脚類を比較的多く食べていた。消化器官の計測値は体の大きさに関係なく,食性の違いによって種間での差異がみられた。

Three-dimensional (3D) integration of electronic chips has been advocated by both industry and academia for many years. It is acknowledged as one of the most promising approaches to meet ever-increasing demands on performance, functionality, and power consumption. Furthermore, 3D integration has been shown to be most effective and efficient once large-scale integration is targeted for. However, a multitude of challenges has thus far obstructed the mainstream transition from “classical 2D chips” to such large-scale 3D chips. In this paper, we survey all popular 3D integration options available and advocate that using an interposer as system-level integration backbone would be the most practical for large-scale industrial applications and design reuse. We review major design (automation) challenges and related promising solutions for interposer-based 3D chips in particular, among the other 3D options. Thereby we outline (i) the need for a unified workflow, especially once full-custom design is considered, (ii) the current design-automation solutions and future prospects for both classical (digital) and advanced (heterogeneous) interposer stacks, (iii) the state-of-art and open challenges for testing of 3D chips, and (iv) the challenges of securing hardware in general and the prospects for large-scale and trustworthy 3D chips in particular.

Use of BMI as a surrogate for body fat percentage is debatable and universal BMI cut-off points do not seem appropriate; lower cut-off points than currently recommended by WHO should be used in some populations, especially in Asia. The adult WHO BMI database indicates that, on average, women are more obese than men, while men are more likely to be pre-obese than women. Urban rates of overweight and obesity are generally higher than rural rates in both sexes. The trend in pre-obesity and obesity over time is generally upward, with very marked increases in the USA and UK in both sexes over the last 10 years.

The absence of a comprehensive policy to address the problems faced by the local three-wheelers (tricycles) became obvious when the Clean Air Act was implemented in January 2003, requiring all motor vehicles to comply with the exhaust emission standards equivalent to Euro 1. The National Center for Transportation Studies was commissioned to develop standards and baseline references for motorcycles and tricycles to facilitate compliance. The objectives are to a) establish baseline information on tricycle drivers and passengers; b) develop standard configuration in the design for the conversion of motorcycle into tricycles; c) develop emission test protocol applicable to local tricycles; and, d) determine the effects of various fuel-oil mixtures for 2-stroke and 4-stroke motorcycles. A comprehensive study of tricycles and its users across Metro Manila was produced including sidecar designs and prototype, real-road test and chassis dynamometer simulation data.

東シベリアの永久凍土地帯に成立する<I>Larix gmelinii</I>林の水分動態と土壌水分, 飽差との関係について考察するために, 林分の水利用量 (<I>SF</I>) と環境要因の季節変化を測定した。<I>SF</I>は開葉直後から急激に増加し, 6月上中旬の展葉の終了する時期に最大 (2.7mmd<SUP>-1</SUP>) となった。<I>SF</I>はその後, ピーク値の75%の値まで低下したが, その値は7月終わりまで維持されていた。<I>SF</I>には飽差の増大による頭打ちが認められた。土壌体積含水率が気孔コンダクタンスに及ぼす影響を調べた結果, 飽差が20hPa未満の領域では気孔コンダクタンスが土壌体積含水率の減少に対して直線的に低下する傾向が認められた。ただし, 飽差が20hPa以上の領域では, 飽差の影響による蒸散の頭打ちが顕著となるため, 土壌体積含水率と気孔コンダクタンスの関係は不明瞭になった。<I>L. gmelinii</I>は, 当地のような寡雨地帯で生育していくために, 土壌の水分状態に応じて気孔コンダクタンスを調節することで体内水分の損失を防ぎ, 水ストレスを回避していると考えられた。

Drilling into seismogenic zones of M2.0-M5.5 earthquakes in deep South Africa gold mines (DSeis Project) was undertaken in 2017–2018 near Orkney, South Africa, to understand principal mechanism of earthquakes nucleate and propagate. Drilling at two main holes, Hole A (817 m) and Hole B (700 m), was completed at the Moab Khotsong mine, and the latter hole penetrated the fault zone that slipped at the 2014 M5.5 earthquake. Fault-related material and its surrounding host rocks were successfully recovered from the hole, and the samples were analyzed in the Center for Advanced Marine Core Research, Kochi University, Japan. The main damaged zone is characterized by highly fragmented fault breccia with high amount of talc and amorphous material, which is likely to related to recent earthquake event. Nondestructive continuous measurements of physical properties (X-ray CT image, density, magnetic susceptibility, and natural gamma ray) are in progress. We will show the preliminary results about the characteristics of the M5.5 fault zone and its implication for generation of the M5.5 earthquake.

We observe the seismic activity in the northern part of the South Island in New Zealand since Nov. 2009. New Zealand is located at the border between the Pacific plate and the Australian plate and the Alpine Fault runs along the boundary from southwest to northeast in the South Island. A lot of earthquakes occurred there, e.g., 1929 Murchison (M7.7), and 1968 Inanghua (M7.2). We observed aftershocks of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake for 2 years since Mar. 2011. Now, We expand the observation network with about 40 seismometers in northern part of the South Island.
