Background:Drug-coated balloon strategies in endovascular therapy often result in severe dissection, so lesion preparation must be improved. We evaluated the efficacy of a gradual inflation method, termed “super slow inflation” (SSI), in preparing lesions to avoid severe dissections.Methods and Results:The association between balloon pressure and the dilatation of a model constricted vessel, as well as the load applied to the balloon surface, were determined using a burst leak detector for a quick inflation (QI; 1 atm/s) protocol and SSI (1 atm/20 s). A retrospective, single-center, non-randomized study evaluated differences in vessel dissection patterns after balloon angioplasty depending on inflation method in 81 consecutive patients (mean [±SD] age 74.6±9.2 years; 54 males) who underwent balloon angioplasty for de novo femoropopliteal lesions between January 2017 and March 2019. In the constricted vessel model, vessel dilatation increased gradually using SSI, with the maximum dilatation load being approximately 100 g lower for the SSI than QI protocol. In patients, the rate of severe vessel dissection was significantly lower in the SSI than non-SSI group (17.6% vs. 55.2%, respectively; P<0.001). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that SSI was an independent factor preventing severe dissection (odds ratio 0.18; 95% confidence interval 0.06–0.53; P=0.002).Conclusions:SSI is a gentle and effective method for the preparation of femoropopliteal lesions to reduce the incidence of severe angiographic dissection when using drug-coated balloons.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl and superoxide anion radicals, are highly reactive molecules derived from the metabolism of oxygen. ROS play positive roles in cell physiology, but they may also damage cell membranes and DNA, inducing oxidation that causes membrane lipid peroxidation and decreases membrane fluidity. Soymilk yogurt, which is soymilk fermented using lactic acid bacteria (LAB), is an excellent food item with numerous functional substances with antioxidant effects. In this study, the antioxidative activities of soymilk yogurt were investigated. Sixteen of the 26 tested LAB strains solidified soymilk. In antioxidant capacity tests for bacterial cells, Leuconostoc mesenteroides MYU 60 and Pediococcus pentosaceus MYU 759 showed the highest values in the oxygen radical antioxidant capacity (ORAC) and hydroxyl radical antioxidant capacity (HORAC) tests, respectively. The supernatant of soymilk yogurt made with Lactobacillus gasseri MYU 1 showed the highest ORAC and HORAC values. L. mesenteroides MYU 60, Lactobacillus plantarum MYU 74, Lactobacillus reuteri MYU 220, and P. pentosaceus MYU 759 showed significantly high N-acetylcysteine equivalent values compared with the control in a total ROS reducing assay (p<0.05). These strains were selected, and a comet assay was performed, which exhibited decreased values in all selected strains compared with the control, indicating DNA protection. An acidic exopolysaccharide produced by P. pentosaceus MYU 759 showed high antioxidant capacity. The antioxidant substances produced by LAB fermentation may be exopolysaccharides, antioxidant peptides, and isoflavone aglycones. Soymilk yogurt can be used as a functional food useful for various diseases related to oxidation.

The morphology of pelagic juveniles of Plectroglyphidodon johnstonianus (Perciformes, Pomacentridae) is reported on the basis of two specimens collected from the offshore region of Aguni Island, Okinawa, Japan. The juveniles were identified using morphometric and genetic evidence. The juveniles were characterized by their round body, elongated pectoral fin, and melanophore pigmentation pattern. In addition, fresh specimens had a large red spot on the lateral side of the body.

西周が「哲学」という訳語を案出し、西洋哲学の日本への移入に努めたことは知られている。そもそも外国文化の熱心な移入というのは、それ自身が文化現象として、優れて日本的と言えるものであるが、西洋文明の根幹をなす哲学の移入は、この点で、日本文化の特質を大いに照らし出すはずのものなのである。その最初の決定的なケースが西周の場合であった。彼において特筆すべきは、西洋哲学を移入する際に、プラトンやデカルト、カントといった形而上学の伝統にではなく、コント実証主義に向かったということ、しかもそのコント実証主義を全面的にではなく、とくに社会学を修正しつつ取り入れようとしたこと、である。科学の分類論に収束していくこの2点での西の議論の真意を探ることで、西を通してではあるが、日本文化の特質に触れていくことができよう。本論文での差し合っての結論は、西は(日本文化は)、「形而上学」と「社会学」とを必要とはしなかったということになる。NISHI Amane (1829–97) is known for having coined the term tetsugaku as a translation for "philosophy," and for his activities in introducing Western philosophy to Japan. The earnest introduction of foreign culture is of itself a cultural phenomenon that can be said to be typically Japanese, and in these terms a study of the introduction of philosophy, which forms the basis of Western civilization, should provide us with many hints about the particular characteristics of Japanese culture. Nishi was the earliest figure to have a decisive influence in this field. Of particular note is the fact that what he chose to introduce was not the metaphysics of Plato, René Descartes, or Immanuel Kant, but rather the positivism of Auguste Comte (1798–1857), and even that not in its complete form, but with an amended understanding of sociology. Investigating the intent behind Nishi's argument in connections with these two characteristics of his activities, which essentially boils down to the question of the classification the sciences, should enable us to draw some conclusions about the characteristics peculiar to Japanese culture. This paper, for the present, concludes that Nishi must have felt that metaphysics and sociology were not essential for Japanese culture.

Sr2MgMoO6−δ (SMM) is one of promising anode materials for direct internal reforming solid oxide fuel cells as its excellent performance has been demonstrated. However, it is necessary to be chemically compatible with the electrolyte material to realize the original performance. In this study, we investigate chemical compatibility between SMM and typical electrolyte materials (8% mol Y2O3–92% mol ZrO2; YSZ, 10% mol Sc2O3–1% mol CeO2–89% mol ZrO2; ScSZ, La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3−δ; LSGM) and anode interlayer materials (Gd0.1Ce0.9O2−δ; GDC, Ce0.8La0.2O2−δ; LDC) under conditions for preparing SMM electrode and operation. SMM formed a reaction layer with all of the typical electrolyte materials studied. LDC was the only material for the interlayer that maintains chemical compatibility with SMM, though it forms the reaction layer with YSZ and ScSZ. From these results, this study clarifies that LSGM and LDC should be used as electrolyte and interlayer, respectively, when SMM is used as the anode.

A high purity powder of Sr2MgMoO6−δ (SMM) was synthesized by a solid-state reaction under atmosphere-controlled conditions. The powder was sintered at a relatively low temperature (1200°C) to prepare compacts with high grain boundary density. SMM is a promising anode material for solid oxide fuel cells and hence, the samples were characterized under conditions relevant to this application. The electrical conductivity values of SMM under various oxygen partial pressures (pO2 = 10−15–104.3 Pa) over the temperature range of 300–850°C were measured by AC impedance spectroscopy. The grain boundary resistivity and bulk resistivity exhibited different oxygen-partial-pressure-dependent behavior. Electron conduction is proposed as the primary mechanism for electrical conductivity in the bulk of the sintered body of SMM under both low and high oxygen partial pressures. Electron conduction and oxygen ion conduction were found to be the primary mechanisms for electrical conductivity at the grain boundary of SMM under low and high oxygen partial pressures, respectively.

The repellent efficacy of 17 essential oils against the German cockroach, Blattella germanica was examined using a T-tube olfactometer. Five oils repelled B. germanica with good efficacy, ranging from 70.0 to 96.7%. Four of these oils, grapefruit, lemon, lime, and orange, were from the citrus family Rutaceae. These citrus essential oils showed similar repellent activity against two more cockroach species, such as Periplaneta americana and P. fuliginosa. Gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry analyses revealed that the major components responsible for the repellent activity of the citrus oils were limonene, β-pinene and γ-terpinene. Limonene appears to be the main component responsible for the repellent activity rather than β-pinene and γ-terpinene. The repellent efficacy of these components varied with different doses and the cockroach species tested. It is likely that minor components of the oils also contributed to the overall repellent activity of citrus essential oils, except orange oil. The activity of orange oil is almost solely attributed to the activity of limonene. Also, the repellent activity of citrus oil and that of each of the terpenoids makes little difference to the efficacy of a repellant against the three species of cockroaches.

Photoreactivation is a mechanism in which photolyase directly repairs either cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) or (6-4) photoproducts [(6-4) PPs] caused by ultraviolet (UV) light. In the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa, some UV-sensitive mutants such as mus-44 have been reported to exhibit a partial photoreactivation defect (PPD) phenotype, but its mechanism has not been elucidated for a long time. In this study, the N. crassa CPD photolyase PHR was overexpressed in the mus-44 strain, but photoreactivation ability was not increased. Furthermore, Escherichia coli CPD photolyase or Arabidopsis thaliana (6-4) PP photolyase was also introduced into mus-44; however, the PPD phenotype was not complemented. These results suggested that the PPD phenotype in N. crassa is not caused by residual unrepaired pyrimidine dimers, which are the main type of DNA damage caused by UV irradiation. Finally, we revealed that mus-44, but not the mus-43 strain, which does not show the PPD phenotype, displayed higher sensitivity with increasing dose rate of UV. Moreover, mus-44 was also sensitive to an interstrand crosslinking agent. This indicates that the high dose of UV in our experimental condition induces DNA damage other than pyrimidine dimers, and that such damage is a likely cause of the PPD phenotype.

The redundancy theory of truth is normally considered to be a form of the deflationist theory of truth. Frege is sometimes counted as an advocate of the deflationist theory, because he emphasizes the redundancy of the truth predicate. In this paper, following Thomas Ricketts's interpretation, I will argue that this is a misunderstanding of Frege's view. Even if Frege is a deflationist, it cannot be because he accepts the redundancy thesis. Indeed, truth plays an indispensable role in Frege's picture of judgement and assertion. In light of his notion of judgement and assertion, what the redundancy of the truth predicate means to Frege will be clarified.

This paper aims to summarize the mechanisms of public investment as a social policy in remote rural areas in Japan. It includes findings from former studies as well as a case study undertaken in Shimane by the author, and it discusses the function of public investment in terms of the relationship between the three major groupings involved in the local civil engineering industry. These groups are the “primary labor force group” (PLG) which consists of workers born before or in 1935, the “secondary labor force group” (SLG) which consists of workers born after 1935, and the “local civil engineering companies” (LCECs). In the 1970s and 1980s. there was a strong mutual dependence between the PLG and the LCECs in remote rural areas. PLG workers gave higher priority to maintaining a traditional rural lifestyle and hoped to find jobs in their local area, hence jobs for them should have been created through public works projects. The LCECs also wanted a cheap and quantitatively flexible labor force for public works projects, so public investment worked effectively as a regional social policy. However, as the PLG workers retired and a new generation of workers entered the work force, the disparity between the supply of and demand for labor in the civil engineering industry has increased and the role of public investment as a social policy has been weakened. These changes suggest that the so-called “kaso problem” is generation-specific and that public investment as a social policy for remote rural areas is nearing its end.

This study explores the behavior of transnational migrants in a global city—in this case, Koreatowns in the New York metropolitan area. Global changes in post-war capitalism and US immigration policies attracted various Korean migrant groups to the New York metropolitan area. These can be classified as old-timers, who migrated before or during the 1980s in the hope of securing permanent residency, and newcomers—relatively young and highly educated professionals who have migrated since the 1990s. Old-timers typically relocate to the suburbs via ethnic enclaves, on which they are strongly reliant. In contrast, newcomers are dispersed across the metropolitan area, sometimes visiting Koreatown as a node of the ethnic human network or for Korean-style service. These distinctive behaviors mean that migrant characteristics change with the economic growth of emerging countries, in turn changing the urban space of global cities.
