Influenza is a contagious, acute respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus. The mucosal lining in the host respiratory tract is not only the site of virus infection, but also the site of defense; it is at this site that the host immune response targets the virus and protects against reinfection. One of the most effective methods to prevent influenza is to induce specific antibody (Ab) responses in the respiratory tract by vaccination. Two types of influenza vaccines, intranasal live attenuated influenza virus (LAIV) vaccines and parenteral (injectable) inactivated vaccines, are currently used worldwide. These vaccines are approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration. Live attenuated vaccines induce both secretory IgA (S-IgA) and serum IgG antibodies (Abs), whereas parenteral vaccines induce only serum IgG Abs. However, intranasal administration of inactivated vaccines together with an appropriate adjuvant induces both S-IgA and IgG Abs. Several preclinical studies on adjuvant-combined, nasal-inactivated vaccines revealed that nasal S-IgA Abs, a major immune component in the upper respiratory tract, reacted with homologous virus hemagglutinin (HA) and were highly cross-reactive with viral HA variants, resulting in protection and cross-protection against infection by both homologous and variant viruses, respectively. Serum-derived IgG Abs, which are present mainly in the lower respiratory tract, are less cross-reactive and cross-protective. In addition, our own clinical trials have shown that nasal-inactivated whole virus vaccines, including a built-in adjuvant (single-stranded RNA), induced serum hemagglutination inhibition (HI) Ab titers that fulfilled the EMA criteria for vaccine efficacy. The nasal-inactivated whole virus vaccines also induced high levels of nasal HI and neutralizing Ab titers, although we have not yet evaluated the nasal HI titers due to the lack of official criteria to establish efficacy based on this parameter. Data suggest that adjuvant-combined nasal-inactivated vaccines have advantages over the current injectable vaccine because the former induce both S-IgA and serum IgG Abs. In addition, nasal-inactivated vaccines seem to be superior to the LAIV vaccines, because non-infectious preparations could be used in high-risk groups. Thus, the development of intranasal inactivated vaccines is recommended, because such vaccines are expected to improve the efficacy of influenza vaccines.

並列性が内在する問題を計算機上で表現する時,1対1の通信を基礎とするモデルでは不自然な表現を強いられる場合が存在する.そこで,オブジェクト同士が制限付きブレードキャストによって相互作用を行う並列計算モデルを提案し,そのモデルによる同期や相互排除の表現について論じる.また,分散協調型問題解決システムを構築する道具として本モデルを適用した場合の有効性に関しても述べている.

大阪花街「北の新地」の北陽演舞場は, 1915年に竣工した和風美術建築であった。 ここでは毎春北陽浪花踊が美々しく開演され, 一般市民もこれを観覧するなど, 花街と杜会との接点ともいうべき施設であった。 この建物は1945年6月の大阪大空襲で灰儘に帰したが. 施工者:大林組には詳細な設計図と完成時の写真が多数残されている。 本稿はこれら資料から北陽演舞場の平面 構成と浪花踊観客の動線を紙上に復元し, その結果に基づいて, この建造物の劇場としての特色を追究した。

A new disease in rice that is characterized by leaf bleaching was recently identified in some fields in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The present study was the first to isolate and identify the pathogen of this disease. We confirmed that leaf bleaching symptoms were due to infection with Methylobacterium indicum bacteria using molecular biology approaches. A full-length genome analysis of pathogenic Methylobacterium strain VL1 revealed that it comprises a single chromosome and six plasmids, with a total size of 7.05‍ ‍Mbp and GC content of 70.5%. The genomic features of VL1 were similar to those of the non-pathogenic M. indicum strain SE2.11T; however, VL1 possessed additional unique genes, including those related to homoserine lactone biosynthesis. We established a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay using the unique sequences of VL1 as target sequences for the rapid and simple detection of pathogenic M. indicum strains. Our initial evaluation demonstrated that the LAMP assay successfully distinguished between pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains infecting rice plants in a rapid and sensitive manner. The present results provide insights into the pathogenesis and development of control measures for novel rice diseases.

We demonstrated the inhibitory effect of fluvoxamine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), on voltage-dependent K+ (Kv) channels in freshly isolated rabbit coronary arterial smooth muscle cells using a whole-cell patch clamp technique. Fluvoxamine reduced the amplitude of Kv currents in a concentration-dependent manner with an IC50 value of 3.71±1.09 µM and a Hill coefficient of 0.62±0.14. Although fluvoxamine did not significantly affect the steady-state activation curve, it shifted the steady-state inactivation curve toward a more negative potential. Pretreatment with another SSRI, paroxetine, did not affect the basal Kv current and did not alter the inhibitory effect of fluvoxamine on Kv channels. We concluded that fluvoxamine inhibits the Kv current in a concentration-dependent manner and in a closed (inactivated) state of the Kv channels independent of serotonin reuptake inhibition.

A computer assisted proof is presented for the existence of various periodic solutions for forced Suarez-Schopf's equation, which are delay differential equations modeling El Niño. Tight inclusions of periodic solutions are calculated through numerical verification method by utilizing a structure of Galerkin's equation for forced Suarez-Schopf's equation effectively. The existence of various periodic solutions has been proved via computer assisted proofs including various subharmonics. Especially, coexistence of several subharmonics are proved and numerical simulations are presented suggesting an appearance of chaos.

An auditory brain-computer interface (BCI) which detects event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by selective attention to one of the tone streams was proposed. Two frequency oddball tone sequences with different tone frequency ranges were alternately presented to subjects, and were perceived by subjects as two kinds of segregated streams. Event-related potentials elicited by two kinds of deviant tones were classified by linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to find the stream subjects paid selective attention to. Experiments with six subjects have shown that this system could realize binary selection from two tone streams.

This paper would discuss about the Chinese diplomatic policy toward a civilized country, even a great power in the world in 1900-1920's. Until 1990's, except for some western and Japanese scholars, most of scholars have recognized that Chinese diplomacy from 1900s to 1920's doesn't have any remarkable and significant achievements and is called 'weak country should not have any efficient diplomacy.' But through the survey for so much amount of the Chinese diplomatic archives to be opened in Taipei, Nanjing and Beijing, we come to be able to understand the Chinese basic diplomatic policy from last ten years of Qing dynasty to the period of Beijing government of ROC is as follows : (1) To revise and improve the unequal treaties. This means not only to revise unequal treaties (extraterritoriality, Tariff autonomy and Most-favored nation treatment) to much more equal ones, but also to get back lost territories, rights, collaterals and so on, through diplomatic negotiation and civilization of China. (2) To enhance its own international status in order to improve a series of unequal treaties and get back lost rights and territories. And China intended to become a bigger and stronger country, for example China joined the WWI and after Paris Peace Conference, wanted to get much more higher status especially in League of Nations. (3) To retain and protect its own territory and rights, and to keep unification by strengthening the concept of National sovereignty, probably influenced by the trend of studies of international law in US at that time. And China collected and edited materials about its own process of losing national rights trough a series of wars and created historical memories of its original image of glorious empire accompanied by many neighborhood countries as lost subjected countries. Thus China got the visible process to return a needle of a clock toward the original China. China got result on each factors; (1) Some treaties were revised to more equal ones and new equal treaties were concluded. And the rights of no-treaty nationals in China were changed same as Chinese subjects. Furthermore some settlements were returned to China. (2) China got the status of one of the allied nations of WWI trough it's joining in the war. Also China got the certification to join the League of Nations as an original member and become a non-regular member of the council of the L.N. (3) China failed to in retain of territory and national rights ,to be deprived by Japan(21articles, Shandong rights and so on). But China returned these territories and rights in Washington Conference and other negotiations as soon as can. About historical memory and materials, China edited many historical textbooks including the process of Chinese losing its rights and territories after the Opium War. These textbooks were claimed many times in 1910s-1930s by Japanese government because they had the contents of 'anti-Japanese' and 'warped' historical recognition. And the famous historical books and periodicals were edited and published in 1910-1920's. Both of the diplomatic historical materials in Qing dynasty (Qing-shi Waijiao Shiliao) and the official periodicals of Qing dynasty had so strong connotation of Chinese 'lost territory and rights' story and the original image of China. This original image was sometimes different from the real historical fact, for example in fact tributal countries were not subjected to China diplomatically, but these books defined these countries as a 'subjecting countries to China' on the context of modern international law. The 'creation of history' was advanced in parallel with diplomatic activities. These policies were basically adopted by KMT government. KMT government decorated it with the slogan of 'revolutionary diplomacy' and penetrated into administrative detail regulation to restrain foreign activities in China. China succeeds in recover its lost rights from allied nations in 1943, and in 1946 China recovered the extraterritoriality from Swiss. And China got the status of permanent member of Security Council of United Nations. It seemed that China's desire of long time was gotten. But lost R.O.C. escaped to Taiwan and P.R.C. did not get the fruits trough the war. The Chinese diplomatic history has left an insufficient 'story.'

The increase in the number of imported cases of dengue fever in Japan is of particular concern as Aedes albopictus is a vector of dengue fever. Due to the potential for insecticide resistance and the impact of insecticides on non-target species, increased attention is being paid to alternative methods of pest control. Placing salt in used tires has been recommended by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan as a means of controlling mosquitoes. However, the effectiveness of salt as a larvicide against Ae. albopictus are currently unclear. This study examined the acute toxicity of sodium chloride against first and fourth larval instars of Ae. albopictus. Acute toxicity tests were conducted according to World Health Organization guidelines. The susceptibility of Ae. albopictus larvae was tested against 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.25% and 1.5% NaCl solutions. Larval mortality was correlated with an increase in NaCl concentration and exposure duration. First instar Ae. albopictus larvae were more sensitive to NaCl than fourth instar, and 72-h LC90 values for first and fourth larval instars were 0.49% and 1.01% NaCl, respectively. Our results suggest that the application of 0.5% NaCl to a habitat for 3 days is effective for Ae. albopictus control.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare systemic disorder characterized by recurrent, widespread chondritis of the auricular, nasal, and tracheal cartilages. IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic immune-mediated disease characterized by the infiltration of IgG4-bearing plasma cells into systemic organs. Although 25% to 35% of patients with RP have a concurrent autoimmune disease, coexistence of RP and IgG4-RD is rare. We herein report a case of RP complicated by IgG4-RD. A 63-year-old man developed recurrent bilateral ear pain and swelling, recurrent blurred and decreased vision, and migratory multiple joint pain, sequentially within one year. Fourteen months after the first symptom, he experienced dry cough and dyspnea with exertion. A computed tomography (CT) scan detected interstitial pneumonia, swelling of bilateral submandibular glands, bilateral hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and several nodules in bilateral kidneys. His serum levels of IgG and IgG4 were elevated. The biopsy specimen of auricular cartilage showed infiltrations of inflammatory cells and fibrosis consistent with RP. The IgG4-positive cells were not observed in auricular cartilage. The patient met the diagnostic criteria of RP, including bilateral auricular chondritis, conjunctivitis, iritis and polyarthritis. The biopsy specimens of lung and kidney revealed the significant infiltrations of IgG4-positive plasma cells and fibrosis. We also diagnosed him as having IgG4-RD, affecting bilateral submandibular glands, hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes, lungs, and kidneys. Thus, RP preceded the onset of IgG4-RD. Corticosteroid therapy improved the symptoms and CT scan findings. In conclusion, RP and IgG4-RD do coexist; however, the pathogenesis of their coexistence is unknown.

The Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, which is inhabited by Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata), is the northernmost habitat for wild primates in the world. This study was the first to determine the conception dates of specific individuals and estimate the pregnancy rate of wild populations in this region. The pregnancy rate of animals aged 5 years or more at delivery was estimated to be 40.9% (27/66). Conception dates of each fetus were also estimated using a regression line of Pig-tail monkeys (Macaca nemestrina), which are taxonomically related to Japanese monkeys and have a similar physique. The conception dates were distributed across 90 days between September 24th and December 23rd, with a mean conception date of November 4th (SD=22.3 days, n=53). Using these findings, the mean birth date was estimated as April 25th, more than two weeks earlier than the mean birth date in previous research determined using direct observations carried out over the past 20 years ago. Global warming due to climate change is thought to be one of the main causes of this difference.

In this paper, to mechanize a human ankle joint stretching treatment that is mainly performed by a PT (Physical Therapist), the geometrical relationships among the Ankle joint, Hip joint, Sole, and pushing device rotation center are analyzed using a simple numerical calculation model, and the effectiveness of the model was examined in an actual developed system. The stretching of the ankle joint is an important medical treatment that PTs perform to help their patients to recover their ability to walk and to prevent contracture. Because the ankle joint treatment requires a large amount of force (equal to the subject’s weight) and precise angle control at the same time, manual treatment by PTs has not been replaced by mechanical treatment systems. In a previous study, we developed a new mechanism of ankle joint stretching that involves fixing the length of the subject sitting chair and the device; the novel mechanism can realize comfortable stretching without pain. However, the optimum geometrical relationships among the Ankle joint, Hip joint, Sole, and pushing device rotation center have not been analyzed. In this paper, to develop the effective mechanism of the stretching treatment, the geometrical relationships were analyzed mathematically by using numerical calculation, and the effectiveness of the numerical calculation was confirmed by manufacturing a treatment device comprising two force sensors and two DC motors based on the calculation results. Numerical calculation results show that the PT’s key point of the ankle joint treatment was a position located between the Ankle joint and the pushing device rotation center. The analytical result will effectively promote the development of the mechanical systems used as ankle joint stretching treatment devices.

The Oribe-style stone lantern used in a garden for tea ceremony has its origin in the time around 1600. On the remains of those lanterns is engraved the year 1615. Their formative characteristics are found at the three parts of stone poles. First, the top part of stone poles, projecting right and left, has a shape Τ (Egyptian Cross), and a shape † (Latin Cross). There's a theory from this that it's the symbol of the Holy Cross. However, I think this theory is wrong. The design Τ is not limited to the Holy Cross. Second, in the center of the shape † are engraved hieroglyphic characters. There's another theory from this that these characters mean IHS (Jesus; lesus Homium Salvator), or IHP. This theory is also wrong. I think it's the ideogram of the old form of a Chinese character Tatsu. Tatsu means the year of the birth of Furuta Oribe (1544-1615). Tatsu is one in Eto (or, Chinese sexagenary cycle), and the character means the North Star. It also has its original meaning of "being the best season for crops in fine spring weather." Third, at the base of the stone pole is a figure in relief. There's a theory from this that this is an image of Jesus Christ or of a missionary. I think this is wrong, too. I think it's an image of a bonze (or, priest) style of the master of tea ceremony and its variation.
