Background:There is little evidence regarding the effect of outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on exercise capacity or the long-term prognosis in patients after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). This study aimed to determine whether participation in outpatient CR improves exercise capacity and long-term prognosis in post-CABG Japanese patients in a multicenter cohort.Methods and Results:We enrolled 346 post-CABG patients who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing during early (2–3 weeks) and late (3–6 months) time points after surgery. They formed the Active (n=240) and Non-Active (n=106) CR participation groups and were followed for 3.5 years. Primary endpoint was a major adverse cardiac event (MACE): all-cause death or rehospitalization for acute myocardial infarction/unstable angina/worsening heart failure. Peak oxygen uptake at 3–5 months from baseline was significantly more increased in Active than in Non-Active patients (+26±24% vs. +19±20%, respectively; P<0.05), and the MACE rate was significantly lower in Active than Non-Active patients (3.4% vs. 10.5%, respectively; P=0.02). Multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis showed that participation in outpatient CR was a significant prognostic determinant of MACE (P=0.03).Conclusions:This unique study showed that a multicenter cohort of patients who underwent CABG and actively participated in outpatient CR exhibited greater improvement in exercise capacity and better survival without cardiovascular events than their counterparts who did not participate.

Bradyrhizobium elkanii, a rhizobium with a relatively wide host range, possesses a functional type III secretion system (T3SS) that is involved in symbiotic incompatibility against Rj4-genotype soybean (Glycine max) and some accessions of mung bean (Vigna radiata). To expand our knowledge on the T3SS-mediated partner selection mechanism in the symbiotic legume-rhizobia association, we inoculated three Lotus experimental accessions with wild-type and T3SS-mutant strains of B. elkanii USDA61. Different responses were induced by T3SS in a host genotype-dependent manner. Lotus japonicus Gifu inhibited infection; L. burttii allowed infection, but inhibited nodule maturation at the post-infection stage; and L. burttii and L. japonicus MG-20 both displayed a nodule early senescence-like response. By conducting inoculation tests with mutants of previously reported and newly identified effector protein genes of B. elkanii USDA61, we identified NopF as the effector protein triggering the inhibition of infection, and NopM as the effector protein triggering the nodule early senescence–like response. Consistent with these results, the B. elkanii USDA61 gene for NopF introduced into the Lotus symbiont Mesorhizobium japonicum induced infection inhibition in L. japonicus Gifu, but did not induce any response in L. burttii or L. japonicus MG-20. These results suggest that Lotus accessions possess at least three checkpoints to eliminate unfavorable symbionts, including the post-infection stage, by recognizing different T3SS effector proteins at each checkpoint.

ブナ科樹木の萎凋病菌Raffaelea quercivoraに対する外国産コナラ属樹種の感受性を明らかにするため,Quercus palustris, Q. robur, Q. rubra,日本産アラカシの各種苗木に対して,多点・1点接種を行った.その結果,多点接種における対照,無処理木では枯死が確認されなかったが,接種木ではQ. rubraのみで枯死が確認され,その枯死率は42%であった.また,枯死率は樹種間で有意に異なった.1点接種の接種木においてQ. rubraの接種部横断面における変色域の割合は,アラカシのものに比べ,有意に高かった.以上の結果から,R. quercivoraは外国産のQ. rubraに対して病原性を有することが明らかとなった.

The iron and steelmaking industry has been receiving social pressure to reduce energy consumption and environmental load as recent increase in the social awareness on environmental and resource problems. The ironmaking system consumes more than a half of overall energy input to the steelwork and its improvement is expected as a countermeasure for such problems. Numerous attempts through improving the blast furnace operation have been made. This paper analyzes material and energy balances of ironmaking system that consists of hot stove, coke oven, CDQ, sintering and blast furnace. The operation statuses of the blast furnace with natural gas injection, metallic charging and top gas recycling that have been obtained by the kinetic-based numerical simulations are applied to this analysis. The results suggested that the metallic charging to blast furnace decreases both energy input and CO2 emission. The natural gas injection operation decreases the CO2 emission from the iron making system while the decrease in the energy input is small. The top gas recycling operation increases the CO2 emission due to the scrubbed CO2 from the recycled top gas.

Diarrhea is the most common complication of enteral nutrition (EN). Pro/prebiotics are typically used to prevent diarrhea during EN. This study aimed to demonstrate the effects of enteral formula containing fermented dairy products (FDPs) and galacto-oligosaccharides on intestinal mucosal functions in rats. After feeding rats with regular rodent chow (RRC), standard formula (STD-F), and FDP-containing formula (FDP-F) for 2 wk, the rats were sacrificed with their intestines removed. Then, the electrophysiological properties of intestinal epithelia were measured using the Ussing chamber. In addition, organic acids and microbiota in the cecal contents were analyzed. In FDP-F-fed rats, electrical nerve activation-evoked increase in short-circuit current (Isc) in the cecum and middle colon was reduced compared with STD-F-fed rats. Mucosal propionate-evoked changes in Isc in FDP-F-fed rats were also reduced in the terminal ileum. The total cecal organic acid concentration in STD-F-fed rats decreased compared with RRC-fed rats, and approximately half was recovered in FDP-F-fed rats, which contributed to the recovery of acetate and butyrate concentrations. In microbiota analysis, the density of total bacteria, particularly Bifidobacterium, in cecal contents increased in FDP-F-fed rats. In conclusion, the consumption of FDP-F changed the total amounts and components of gut microbiota and organic acids, and resulted in inhibitory changes in mucosal luminal stimulant- and nervous system-mediated fluid secretory function. These findings suggest that FDP-F might prevent the incidence of diarrhea during EN.

Background This study attempted to clarify issues regarding difficulties in school life perceived by professional training college students and educational support systems for students including possible developmental disabilities.Methods We surveyed 953 students enrolled at 9 professional training colleges in Japan by using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire to investigate difficulties during school life, help-seeking preferences, and self-esteem. Difficulties were investigated by using the Self-Cognitive Difficulties Scale, help-seeking preferences were assessed with the Help-Seeking Preferences Scale, and self-esteem was assessed by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. We also investigated the relationship between the Self-Cognitive Difficulties Scale and the sources of advice used by students.Results Responses were obtained from 863 students, and those of 775 students were considered to be valid. In terms of learning scenarios, 271 students (35.0%) responded that written examinations caused the most difficulties. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Help-Seeking Preferences Scale were negatively correlated with the Self-Cognitive Difficulties Scale. With respect to the relationship between sub-factors of the Self-Cognitive Difficulties Scale and sources of advice, the students who asked specialists for advice had significantly higher scores for the factors of interpersonal relationships and reading/writing, as well as significantly higher scores for impulsivity and learning-related difficulties. The students who asked their previous high school teachers for advice had significantly higher scores for inattention and reading/writing. Furthermore, the students who asked senior students in the same department for advice had a significantly higher score for learning-related difficulties.Conclusion Our results suggested that professional training college students with a high Self-Cognitive Difficulties Scale score are more likely to choose a specialist as the source of advice. When providing educational support to professional training college students, it is important to consider the possibility that their sources of advice might differ depending on their individual self-perceived difficulty characteristics.

Microbiology at the high altitude atmosphere is important for assessing the chances and limits of microbial transfer from the earth to extraterrestrial bodies. Among the microorganisms isolated from the high-atmospheric samples, spore formers and vegetative Deinococci were highly resistant against harsh environment at high altitude. From limited knowledge available to date, it is suggested that terrestrial microorganisms may have had chances to be ejected and transferred to outer space. Survival of these organisms during their space travel and proliferation on other planets might be also feasible. Directed Panspermia from Earth to extraterrestrial bodies is discussed on the basis of findings reported in literatures.

In healthy dogs, amino acid infusion significantly attenuates the decrease in body temperature during anesthesia by facilitating insulin secretion, suggesting that such an increase in insulin secretion is related to increased heat production. In dogs, selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors, which are used for pain relief in veterinary medicine, possess anti-pyretic action. And, in mice and humans, selective COX-2 inhibitors increase insulin secretion and sensitivity. Therefore, treatment with COX-2 inhibitors may negate or accelerate the attenuating effect on decreased body temperature during anesthesia by amino acid infusion. In the present study, influences on insulin secretion and body temperature by treatment with meloxicam or robenacoxib at therapeutic dose were evaluated in healthy dogs. Treatment with meloxicam or robenacoxib did not affect insulin secretion in the unanesthetized and anesthetized dogs, and did not affect body temperature and heart rate under the anesthetized condition with amino acid infusion. In conclusion, COX-2 inhibitors at therapeutic doses did not affect body temperature during anesthesia in dogs administered amino acids.

The activity of nitrogen fixation measured by acetylene reduction was examined in chemosynthetic microbial mats at 72–75°C in slightly-alkaline sulfidic hot springs in Nakabusa, Japan. Nitrogenase activity markedly varied from sampling to sampling. Nitrogenase activity did not correlate with methane production, but was detected in samples showing methane production levels less than the maximum amount, indicating a possible redox dependency of nitrogenase activity. Nitrogenase activity was not affected by 2-bromo-ethane sulfonate, an inhibitor of methanogenesis. However, it was inhibited by the addition of molybdate, an inhibitor of sulfate reduction and sulfur disproportionation, suggesting the involvement of sulfate-reducing or sulfur-disproportionating organisms. Nitrogenase activity was affected by different O2 concentrations in the gas phase, again supporting the hypothesis of a redox potential dependency, and was decreased by the dispersion of mats with a homogenizer. The loss of activity that occurred from dispersion was partially recovered by the addition of H2, sulfate, and carbon dioxide. These results suggested that the observed activity of nitrogen fixation was related to chemoautotrophic sulfate reducers, and fixation may be active in a limited range of ambient redox potential. Since thermophilic chemosynthetic communities may resemble ancient microbial communities before the appearance of photosynthesis, the present results may be useful when considering the ancient nitrogen cycle on earth.

Chemosynthetic microbial communities develop and form dense cell aggregates in slightly alkaline sulfidic hot springs in the temperature range of 70–86°C at Nakabusa, Japan. Nitrogenase activity has recently been detected in the microbial communities collected. To identify possible members capable of nitrogen fixation, we examined the diversities of 16S rRNA and nitrogenase reductase (NifH) gene sequences in four types of chemosynthetic communities with visually different colors and thicknesses. The results of a 16S rRNA gene analysis indicated that all four microbial communities had similar bacterial constituents; the phylum Aquificae was the dominant member, followed in abundance by Thermodesulfobacteria, Firmicutes, and Thermotogae. Most of the NifH sequences were related to sequences reported in hydrothermal vents and terrestrial hot springs. The results of a phylogenetic analysis of NifH sequences revealed diversity in this gene among the communities collected, distributed within 7 phylogenetic groups. NifH sequences affiliated with Aquificae (Hydrogenobacter/Thermocrinis) and Firmicutes (Caldicellulosiruptor) were abundant. At least two different energy metabolic pathways appeared to be related to nitrogen fixation in the communities analyzed; aerobic sulfur/hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria in Aquificae and fermentative bacteria in Firmicutes. The metabolic characteristics of these two dominant phyla differed from those previously inferred from nitrogenase activity assays on chemosynthetic communities, which were associated with hydrogen-dependent autotrophic sulfate reduction. These assays may correspond to the observed NifH sequences that are distantly related to the known species of Thermodesulfovibrio sp. (Nitrospirae) detected in the present study. The activities of nitrogen-fixing organisms in communities may depend on redox states as well as the availability of electron donors, acceptors, and carbon sources.

A novel type of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), N-benzoyl-(S)-valine anilide-imprinted polymer (IP-2), was prepared using hydrogen-bonding interactions as a main force in the pre-polymerization step. The performance of the IP-2 was evaluated via batch procedure and compared with a (S)-valine anilide-imprinted polymer (IP-1) that was prepared using an ionic interaction that is stronger than hydrogen bonding. Although both polymers showed a preferential adsorbability for (S)-amino acid derivatives, different performances were observed in terms of adsorbability and enantioselectivity. In addition, the IP-2 was able to recognize the enantiomer of a valine-derived chiral catalyst. This phenomenon was applied to a chiral amplification reaction, and a highly selective asymmetric Mannich-type amination was achieved using the combination of a racemic catalyst and a MIP.

Humans and dogs live very close together and share various pathogens causing zoonotic parasitoses like schistosomiasis. A previous population genetics study done for schistosomes in the Philippines suggested that there is a high transmission level of Schistosoma japonicum among humans and dogs proving that the latter are important reservoirs for this zoonotic parasite. A more sensitive and specific test detecting schistosome infection in dogs will therefore strengthen the zoonotic surveillance, which might help in the possible elimination of this ancient disease. In this study, recombinant thioredoxin peroxidase-1 (SjTPx-1) and tandem repeat proteins (Sj1TR, Sj2TR, Sj4TR, Sj7TR) previously tested on human and water buffalo samples were used to assess its diagnostic applicability to dogs. Fifty-nine dog serum and stool samples were collected in the schistosomiasis-endemic municipalities of Calatrava, Negros Occidental and Catarman, Northern Samar in the Philippines and examined using the ELISA as compared to microscopy and fecal sample-based PCR. Samples positive for Babesia gibsoni and Dirofilaria immitis were also used to check for cross-reaction. Results showed that SjTPx-1 (80% sensitivity, 92.3% specificity) and Sj7TR (73.3% sensitivity, 92.3% specificity) have good potentials for diagnosing S. japonicum infection in dogs. These diagnostic antigens will therefore improve the surveillance in the transmission of the parasites from dogs to humans.

Oscar Wilde observes in "The Decay of Lying" that life imitates art rather than art imitates life. Akutagawa Ryunosuke was interested in Wilde. He made the protagonist of an autobiographical work wish to catch an aerial spark even at the risk of his life. Wilde and Akutagawa tended to attach more importance to fictitious worlds than the reality. William Faulkner was influenced by Wilde. A character in his novel named Faulkner declares that he is a liar by profession. Joe Christmas in Faulkner's Light in August finishes his life feeling unsure of his relationship to white and black people as he thinks he may be part Negro. He is lynched after many years of violent disobedience. According to Akutagawa, Christ is likely to be bound by the Holy Spirit as an eternal seeker of transcendence. Joe seems to be a powerless Christ vainly striving to get over something. Akutagawa compared artists to climbers and confessed his yearning for the foot of the mountain he was ascending. He called Christ an ultra idiot who kept fighting for poetic justice. This is presumably Akutagawa's reflection on his own fantastic mentality. Wilde was also conscious of a connection between Christ and artists. It may be that artists' passion leads them to ordeals just as Christ's life led him to be crucified. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Wilde is a story of a man who kills himself by means of stabbing his portrait. Likewise Akutagawa was distressed by his shadow and feared that his death might come to his second self. After he committed suicide, a writer lamented that he made a short romance of his life. Sherwood Anderson, who found an excess of talent in Faulkner, warned that he might not write anything because he could write in too many ways. He advised Faulkner to have somewhere to start from and Faulkner wrote a magnificent series of novels with his birthplace as its model. Wilde spent two years in jail on the charge of his homosexual love. Wilde and Akutagawa were tremendously talented. Readers must grieve that Akutagawa did not try to live and write further. As for Wilde, they may ask if he could show his uniqueness only through his fiction. Wilde and Akutagawa, in a sense, never attained their proper starting points from which they could set to work and fully demonstrate their abilities.

An antioxidant Was purified from human placenta extract (HPE) by using gel filtration, liquid-liquid extraction, silicagel column chromatography, and HPLC. The purified antioxidant was identified to be L-tryptophan (L-Trp). L-Trp showed higher inhibitory activity than mannitol and DMSO on the Fenton reaction-induced degradation of 2-deoxy-D-ribose. L-Trp also had much higher inhibitory activity on the cytochrome P-450-dependent lipid peroxidation than the previously identified antioxidants of HPE, L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine and uracil. On the other hand, the inhibitory effect of L-Trp on the Fenton reactioninduced protein oxidation was smaller than that of uracil. These results suggest that L-Trp is a main antioxidant of HPE of which the effect is based on the suppression of lipid peroxidation in the oxidative stress status.

A 64-year-old neurologically asymptomatic woman with rheumatoid arthritis who was treated with the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α antagonist adalimumab developed disseminated tuberculosis (TB). After receiving anti-TB therapy and discontinuing adalimumab, she exhibited paradoxical worsening due to immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) with the appearance of meningitis and brain tuberculomas. This case indicates that continuing anti-TNF therapy may be necessary to prevent IRIS in patients who develop TB, particularly disseminated TB, during the course of anti-TNF therapy. In addition, careful screening for central nervous system (CNS) TB should be performed prior to the initiation of therapy, as even neurologically asymptomatic patients can develop CNS manifestations of IRIS.

センサ素子全体を薄膜プロセスにより作成した伝送線路型薄膜磁界センサを試作した。アモルファスCoNbZr薄膜とコプレーナ型伝送線路を組み合わせ、被測定磁界に対するキャリア信号の位相変化を検出対象とする磁界センサを製作した。試作した磁界センサのインピーダンスおよび位相変化を測定し、その結果を報告する。
