Based on molecular phylogenetic evidence, phylogenetic analyses of both cpDNA and nrDNA sequences based on 76 (cp) and 77 (nr) samples representing 64 species, two subspecies, and three (cp) and two (nr) varieties of Lilium and six (cp) and five (nr) samples from Cardiocrinum, Fritillaria, and Notholirion as outgroups were used to better understand relationships within Lilium and to revise its infrageneric classification. The same individuals were used for both cpDNA and nrDNA analyses to avoid confusion caused by genetic polymorphism within a species. Nine thousand eight hundred thirty seven bp from 10 cpDNA regions and 1069 bp from the nuclear (ITS + ETS) regions were analyzed. The same twelve clades were formed in Lilium in both the chloroplast and nuclear trees (one clade of the former tree and one clade of the latter tree were not strictly formed because of low resolution). In light of the cpDNA and nrDNA trees obtained, 13 morphological characters, including a pair of marginal ridges along a central groove on the adaxial surface of the tepals were examined with attention given for the first time to the use of this character as having diagnostic value. The morphological evidence supported the twelve clades. Based on molecular and morphological evidence, a revised infrageneric classification of Lilium recognizing twelve clades as twelve sections is proposed.

A unique genetic variation with respect to blast resistance was clarified in 201 rice accessions from Vietnam. These accessions were classified into three clusters—A, B1, and B2—based on their reactions to 26 standard differential blast isolates selected in Vietnam. Cluster A was the dominant cultivar group in Vietnam and the most susceptible of the three clusters. Cluster B1 was the smallest group and the most resistant. Cluster B2 was the second-most dominant group and of intermediate resistance between clusters A and B1. The percentages of accessions comprising each cluster varied by region and area. Accessions in cluster A were distributed widely throughout Vietnam and had the highest frequencies in both the Central and North regions. Accessions in cluster B2 were found with highest frequencies in the mountainous and intermediate areas of the North region. Accessions in cluster B1 were found with highest frequencies in the Central region and Red River Delta area (North region). These results suggest that rice accessions in Vietnam were basically susceptible (cluster A) or of intermediate resistance (cluster B2), and that high-resistance cultivars were mainly distributed in the low altitude areas, such as the Red River Delta area and Central region.

A low pressure casting of Mg–Cu–Y melts into copper molds was found to cause amorphous bulks in a cylindrical form. The maximum diameter of the amorphous cylinder (Dc) shows a significant compositional dependence and reaches a maximum value of 4.0 mm for Mg65Cu25Y10. The compositional dependence of the Dc is similar to that for the temperature span of the supercooled liquid region, ΔTx(=Tx−Tg). The similarity is presumably because the alloy with large ΔTx has a high resistance against the nucleation and growth of a crystalline phase resulting from the formation of a disordered structure with a more dense random packing and an optimum bonding states. The compressive proof stress at an elongation of 0.2% (σp) for the Mg80Cu10Y10 cylinder was 822 MPa at room temperature and the fracture occurred along the shear plane. The σp remains unchanged up to 350 K and then decreases significantly with increasing temperature, accompanied by the change in the deformation mode from inhomogeneous to homogeneous type. There is no appreciable difference in the features of mechanical strengths and deformation behavior between the bulk and ribbon samples, indicating the similarity of the disordered structure.

Decreased Mg2+ concentration has been implicated in altered vascular reactivity, endothelial dysfunction and structural remodeling, processes important in vascular changes and target organ damage associated with hypertension. Unlike our knowledge of other major cations, mechanisms regulating cellular Mg2+ handling are poorly understood. Until recently little was known about protein transporters controlling transmembrane Mg2+ influx. However, new research has uncovered a number of genes and proteins identified as transmembrane Mg2+ transporters, particularly transient receptor potential melastatin (TRPM) cation channels, TRPM6 and TRPM7. Whereas TRPM6 is found primarily in epithelial cells, TRPM7 is ubiquitously expressed. Vascular TRPM7 has been implicated as a signaling kinase involved in vascular smooth muscle cell growth, apoptosis, adhesion, contraction, cytoskeletal organization and migration, and is modulated by vasoactive agents, pressure, stretch and osmotic changes. Emerging evidence suggests that vascular TRPM7 function might be altered in hypertension. The present review discusses the importance of Mg2+ in vascular biology in hypertension and focuses on transport systems, mainly TRPM7, that might play a role in the control of vascular Mg2+ homeostasis. Elucidation of the relationship between the complex systems responsible for regulation of Mg2+ homeostasis, the role of TRPM7 in vascular signaling, and the cardiovascular impact will be important for understanding the clinical implications of hypomagnesemia in cardiovascular disease. Showa-Shinzan, one of th e Belonite-Volcanoes, born (1943-1945)in the eastern part of the Volcano Usu (in the South-western part of Hokkaido, Japan) is famous in the history of volcanoes in the world.This volcano erupted in a farm-land and further developed a lava dome (Spine) in the central part. It is a Pelée-type one, and its developing process was clearly observed for the whole period.Some remarkable earthquake swarms occurred during the volcanic activity, and the major ones among them were recorded by seismographs even at a station about 800 km apart from the volcano.The author investigated the relations betwee n the occurrence of earthquakes and the formation of Showa-Shinzan and tried to find some clues to the volcanic mechanism. In this first paper, after an investigation of the characteristics of earthquake swarms recorded on the seismographs in Muroran, Mori and Sapporo (epicentral distance: 25-69 km) and the relation of the volcanic activity therewith, some interesting results were obtained:1) Daily earthquake frequency diagram for the whole period of twenty three months were prepared for the first time.2) These earthquakes were clearly divided into the following three stages:( i ) Pre-volcanic stage: In this stage there was no eruption, and remarkable earthquakes occurred around Volcano Usu frequently. The relation between the maximum amplitude (A) in these earthquake swarms and their frequency (N) was expressed byNAm = const.where m is about 1.8, similar to that of the tectonic earthquake. Moreover, the migration of the hypocentres of these earthquakes showed an intimate connection with the course of the magma intrusion.(ii) Stage of eruptive activity: A violent eruption occurred in the central part of the rising area. The extremely shallow earthquakes during the period of six months including just before and through the eruptive activity were proved to have been originated at the area adjacent to the newly formed crater.(iii) Birth and developmen t of lava dome (spine): The lava dome grew and developed without eruption, accompanied with numerous earthquakes. The earthquakes, which differed greatly from those at the former two stages, began to occur almost simultaneously with the end of the eruption and the frequencies of the earthquakes during the following twelve months corresponded closely to the speed of the development of the lava dome. The value of m in this case was 3.5.3) Process of magma intrusion, increase of magma viscosity a n d their relationship with the feature change of earthquake swarms were investigated. The possibility of predicting volcanic activity Volcano Usu by seismograph at stations up to approximately sixty or seventy kilometers from the volcano is suggested.

Background and Objectives: Computational clinical trial (CCT) in the field of laser medicine promotes clinical application of novel laser devices, because this trial carried out based on numerical modeling of laser-tissue interactions and simulation of a series of treatment process. To confirm the feasibility of the computational clinical trial of skin treatment with a novel picosecond laser, this paper presents an evaluation method of the safety. Study Design/Materials and Methods: In this method, the light propagation and thermal diffusion process after ultrashort light pulse irradiation to a numerical skin model is calculated and the safety based on the photothermal damage is evaluated by computational modeling and simulation. As an example, the safety of a novel picosecond laser device was examined by comparing with several laser devices approved for clinical use. Results: The ratio of the maximum thermal damage induced by picosecond laser irradiation was 1.2 × 10-2 % at the epidermis, while that caused by approved laser irradiation was 99 % at the capillary vessels. The numerical simulation demonstrated that less thermal damage was observed compared with the approved devices. The results show the safety simulated by photothermal damage calculation was consistent with the reported clinical trials. Conclusions: This computational clinical trial shows the feasibility of applying computational clinical trials for the safety evaluation of novel medical laser devices. In contrast to preclinical and clinical tests, the proposed computational method offers regulatory science for appropriately and quickly predicting and evaluating the safety of a novel laser device.

The Gal4/UAS system is a versatile tool to manipulate exogenous gene expression of cells spatially and temporally in many model organisms. Many variations of light-controllable Gal4/UAS system are now available, following the development of photo-activatable (PA) molecular switches and integration of these tools. However, many PA-Gal4 transcription factors have undesired background transcription activities even in dark conditions, and this severely attenuates reliable light-controlled gene expression. Therefore, it is important to develop reliable PA-Gal4 transcription factors with robust light-induced gene expression and limited background activity. By optimization of synthetic PA-Gal4 transcription factors, we have validated configurations of Gal4 DNA biding domain, transcription activation domain and blue light-dependent dimer formation molecule Vivid (VVD), and applied types of transcription activation domains to develop a new PA-Gal4 transcription factor we have named eGAV (enhanced Gal4-VVD transcription factor). Background activity of eGAV in dark conditions was significantly lower than that of hGAVPO, a commonly used PA-Gal4 transcription factor, and maximum light-induced gene expression levels were also improved. Light-controlled gene expression was verified in cultured HEK293T cells with plasmid-transient transfections, and in mouse EpH4 cells with lentivirus vector-mediated transduction. Furthermore, light-controlled eGAV-mediated transcription was confirmed in transfected neural stem cells and progenitors in developing and adult mouse brain and chick spinal cord, and in adult mouse hepatocytes, demonstrating that eGAV can be applied to a wide range of experimental systems and model organisms.Key words: optogenetics, Gal4/UAS system, transcription, gene expression, Vivid

Cognitive behavioral therapies are now considered the treatment of choice for a wide variety of emotional disorders. Despite the increasing utilization of these techniques, the majority of practicing clinicians are unfamiliar with cognitive behavioral treatments. Some have concluded that complex manualized protocols have discouraged dissemination and effective training. Yet, as research on the etiology and nature of emotional disorders progresses, it is becoming clear that the various emotional disorders may actually emerge from similar latent structures or processes. This new understanding suggests the possibility of extracting a set of psychological principles that could be integrated into a single, cohesive treatment protocol and applied to any emotional disorder. Based on emerging data and theory from learning, emotional development and regulation, and cognitive science, three principles have been identified that may be fundamental to the treatment of emotional disorders. These include (a) altering antecedent cognitive reappraisals; (b) preventing emotional avoidance; and (c) modifying action tendencies. Data from the clinical application of the protocol will be presented for an adult population. In addition, the evolution and initial usage of an adaptation of the treatment of emotional disorders in adolescents will be reviewed. Although still in the early stages of development, this unified approach may represent a more efficient, and possibly more efficacious, way to ameliorate overlapping emotional disorder symptomatology (comorbidity) ; in addition to facilitating effective dissemination of empirically supported treatments to practicing clinicians.

現在日本においてはカーボンニュートラルポートの実現が目指されているが,港湾における気候変動対策については実証的な先行研究が少なく,実践との間のギャップにより意思決定者を十分にサポートできていない.本稿では,荷役機械の電動化やハイブリッド化,リーファーエリアへのルーフシェードの設置を行い日本の港湾環境政策を先導する博多港を事例に,コンテナターミナルにおける気候変動対策の効果を実証的に検証した.また,経済性分析と日本の港湾ガバナンスの特徴を踏まえた対策のフィージビリティについて検討した.対策の効果については確認されたものの,経済性の面からターミナルオペレーター等が主導的に講じるのは難しく,港湾ガバナンスの面からも補助金等を含めた政府のイニシアチブが重要であることが明らかとなった.

日本の旧石器時代の研究において,一つの関心事は日本列島に最初に渡来した人類の問題であろう.現在多数の研究者は1万-3万年前頃の旧石器時代人類の存在は認めているが,3万年以前に遡るとされる所謂「前期旧石器時代」になると,その存在に賛否両論があり現在未解決の問題として残されている.日本の前期旧石器時代については,1969年頃から芹沢長介により本格的に研究され始め,全国に遺跡,遺物の発見があった.しかし,ここ数年,岡村道雄•鎌田俊昭らが宮城県内で推進している「新たな前期旧石器時代」の提唱は,芹沢により研究されてきた本来の「前期旧石器問題」を解決させることなく,これこそ真の石器であり,遺跡も完壁なものであると力説する.現在宮城県内で33ヵ所の前期旧石器時代遺跡が発見されており,その中でも座散乱木,馬場壇A,志引,中峯C,北前,山田上ノ台遺跡等が有名である.

Son preference has traditionally been a fundamental cultural value in Vietnamese families, and this preference appears to have intensified in Vietnam in recent years. The key explanation for why parents prefer sons to daughters is that Vietnamese families embrace Confucian notions of gender hierarchy. Based on in-depth interviews with twenty first-generation Vietnamese migrant parents from refugee and skilled migrant backgrounds, and 18 Vietnamese Australian children of migrant parents, this paper explores whether Vietnamese migrants to Australia and their children display a preference for sons in their families. The findings suggest that sons are no longer valued in the ways that they were in Vietnam. Many parents in this study did not express a need to live with, receive financial support from, or be cared for by their sons. The children also expressed fewer financial support and caring obligations to parents. We propose that the greater financial security afforded to the elderly by the social welfare system in Australia may decrease parents’ dependence on sons, lowering the value of sons in families. This strongly suggests that the economic value of sons is key to the persistence of son preference in Vietnam, more so than Confucian notions of gender hierarchy.

Background: In 2012, the Korean National Health Insurance extended its coverage to include denture services for older adults. We examined whether the new policy resulted in improved chewing ability in the eligible population.Methods: We used interrupted time-series (ITS) analysis, a quasi-experimental design, to analyze the effect of the policy. We used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2007 to 2016–2018. The study population consisted of two groups: the treatment group, aged 65 years or older and eligible for the dental insurance benefit; and the control group, those younger than 65 years and ineligible. The main evaluated outcome was self-reported chewing difficulty.Results: The ITS analysis showed that chewing difficulty decreased annually by 0.93% (95% CI, −1.30 to −0.55%) and 0.38% (95% CI, −0.59 to −0.16%) after the policy extension in the older than 65 and younger than 65 groups, respectively. However, we could not conclude that the insurance extension affected chewing difficulty because there was a decrease in the control group as well.Conclusion: Chewing ability improved in both older and younger adults regardless of dental insurance coverage for older adults. Other exogenous factors probably led to the improvements in chewing ability as well as dental insurance benefits.
