3年間の研究期間において、不法移民についてはネゲリ・センビラン州レンゲンにある抑留キャンプ、合法移民についてはセランガ州にあるカレー島のヤシ油プランテーションで、それぞれ3回、計6回の調査を実施した。被験者数は総計で741名であり、その内訳は不法移民308名、合法移民221名、マレーシア人労働者212名であった。不法移民についてはインドネシアが157名と過半数を占め、以下3名のアフリカ人の他はすべてアジア諸国からの移民であった。合法移民はほとんどがインドネシア人であった。また、マレーシア人はマレー系、先住民、インド系に区別できた。全体として不法移民が他の群に比べ寄生虫感染率が高かったが、中でも病原性原虫および外部寄生虫の感染率が高く、主に衛生状態の悪さを反映する結果と思われた。合法移民については不顕性マラリアが多く見られたことが特徴であったが、追跡調査で調べられた4名の被験者はいずれも陰性であった。これは母国への一時帰国に伴って感染した典型的な輸入寄生虫症と考えられた。対照群ではそれぞれの民族性に由来する生活習慣の違いが寄生虫感染にも反映していると考えられた。不法移民では出身国や職業の違いが感染状況にも反映され、移民の寄生虫相を考える上では重要な指標であることが示唆された。全体を通してマレーシアには見られない輸入寄生虫症は見つからなかったが、移民の持ち込む寄生虫はマレーシアの寄生虫感染を一定のレベルに維持するような働きを持つことが考えられた。また、合法移民は自由に国内を行き来できることから、感染を広める上で大きな役割を果たす可能性が示唆された。入国時あるいは定期的な健康診断がこうした輸入寄生虫症の対策として重要であると考えられた。

One hundred and eighty-nine Chinese cultivars of common wheat were crossed to three testers for necrosis and chlorosis genes, and their genotypes were determined. <br>Three genotypes, <i>Ne</i><sub>1</sub><i>ne</i><sub>2</sub>, <i>ne</i><sub>1</sub><i>Ne</i><sub>2</sub> and <i>ne</i><sub>1</sub><i>ne</i><sub>2</sub> for necrosis were found in 39.3, 7.1 and 53.6% of the cultivars, respectively. As to chlorosis genes, the great majority of cultivars (93.4%) were of the genotype, <i>ch</i><sub>1</sub><i>Ch</i><sub>2</sub>, the remainder (6.6%) were <i>ch</i><sub>1</sub><i>ch</i><sub>2</sub>. It was evident that common wheat retained its characteristic population structure regarding necrosis and chlorosis during its eastward dispersion from Central Asia to Japan through China. No particular geographical inclination in the frequencies of various necrosis and chlorosis genotypes, nor their special association with the two characters, growth habit and awnedness, was detected.

In the large amoeboid organism Physarum, biochemical oscillators are spatially distributed throughout the organism and their collective motion exhibits phase waves, which carry physiological signals. The basic nature of this wave behaviour is not well-understood because, to date, an important effect has been neglected, namely, the shuttle streaming of protoplasm which accompanies the biochemical rhythms. Here we study the effects of self-consistent flow on the wave behaviour of oscillatory reaction-diffusion models proposed for the Physarum plasmodium, by means of numerical simulation for the dispersion relation and weakly nonlinear analysis for derivation of the phase equation. We conclude that the flow term is able to increase the speed of phase waves (similar to elongation of wave length). We compare the theoretical consequences with real waves observed in the organism and also point out the physiological roles of these effects on control mechanisms of intracellular communication.

台湾、日本、サントペ・プリンシペでの調査の結果、台湾と日本では医学生であっても感染経路や被害の状況を正確に把握していない、治療に関し最新の正しい情報がないため恐怖心がある、台湾の調査では「対策」の講義の機会のある公衆衛生学科の学生のほうが医学科の学生よりも正確に理解していること等がわかった。HIV/AIDSが日本国内に入って来て約20年が経過したが、新規感染者数は増加傾向にあり低年齢化してきている。日和見感染症や喫煙との関係が深いことは後述する調査で明らかとなった。HIV/AIDSの感染経路となるDrugや喫煙と併せて、正しい基礎知識と予防策を学校教育の中で教えていくことが重要である。

We have measured the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity, κ(T), for DI-BSCCO® tapes fabricated by Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., which are (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O8+x tapes sheathed with Ag or Ag–Au alloy. The κ(T) of the tape sheathed with Ag (residual resistance ratio (RRR) = 15) decreases with decreasing temperature and starts to increase rapidly below 60 K, with a maximum at around 15 K. On the other hand, the κ(T) of the tape sheathed with Ag–5.4 wt%Au alloy has a very low value that decreases monotonically with decreasing temperature. At around 77 K, the absolute values of κ(T) for both tapes were about and , respectively. The κ(T) of a stacked sample, in which six DI-BSCCO tapes sheathed with Ag are soldered, was also measured. The measured κ(T) was fairly well reproduced by the estimated κ(T), which was calculated using the measured κ(T) of the single tape and solder.

An inventory management problem is theoretically discussed for a factory having effects of lead times in replenishing the inventory, where it stocks materials used for its products. It is assumed that the factory can dynamically control the size of ordering materials. By applying the stochastic control theory, the optimal control of the ordering size is derived, in which the expected total cost up to an expiration time is minimized. First, a new stochastic model is constructed for describing an inventory fluctuation of the factory by the use of a non-diffusive stochastic differential equation, where an analytic time is introduced so that the inventory process can be a Markov process even though it is affected by lead times. Next, an optimal control is formulated by introducing an evaluation function quantifying total costs. Based upon them, the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation is derived, whose solution gives the optimal control. Finally, the optimal control is quantitatively examined through numerical solutions of the HJB equation. Numerical results indicate that if time up to an expiration time is short then the optimal control is affected by it, otherwise, the optimal control does not depend on it.

Cr2O3 is a magnetoelectric antiferromagnet, and its antiferromagnetic domain state is controllable by the simultaneous application of magnetic and electric fields. In the 2000s, that is, more than 50 years since the discovery of the magnetoelectirc effect in Cr2O3, efforts were initiated apply this effect to engineering applications. In this article, we review the recent progress of the magnetoelectric control of the antiferromagnetic domain state and the related phenomena of Cr2O3, in particular, in an all-thin film system, an essential step to the application.

Nerve gas is a major chemical agent stockpiled as a chemical arsenal. Nerve gas was used in actual combat in the Iran-Iraq war and also in the insurgent war against Kurd minorities in Iraq. Recently, a nerve gas, sarin, was used massively against a defenseless public in Matsumoto and in Tokyo, causing a large number of deaths and injuries. This marked the first use of chemical weapons in a noncombat situation by a terrorist group. Information on nerve gas is relatively scarce; it is not easily accessible to most people. A systematic summarized article like the one here should help those who are interested in an overview of scientific information on nerve gas.In this review article, an overall view of poisonous gas is first made. Then different aspects of nerve gas are discussed. Toxicology, treatment, detection, decontamination and control of precursors are also reviewed.

Ordered collective motion emerges in a group of autonomously motile elements (known as active matter) as their density increases. Microswimmers, such as swimming bacteria, have been extensively studied in physics and biology. A dense suspension of bacteria forms seemingly chaotic turbulence in viscous fluids. Interestingly, this active turbulence driven by bacteria can form a hidden ensemble of many vortices. Understanding the active turbulence in a bacterial suspension can provide physical principles for pattern formation and insight into the instability underlying biological phenomena. This review presents recent findings regarding ordered structures causing active turbulence and discusses a physical approach for controlling active turbulence via geometric confinement. When the active matter is confined in a compartment with a size comparable to the correlation length of the collective motion, vortex-like rotation appears, and the vortex pairing order is indicated by the patterns of interacting vortices. Additionally, we outline the design principle for controlling collective motions via the geometric rule of the vortex pairing, which may advance engineering microdevices driven by a group of active matter. Sequencing of individual human genomes enables studying relationship among nucleotide variations, amino acid substitutions, effect on protein structures and diseases. Many studies have found general tendencies, for instance, that pathogenic variations tend to be found in the buried regions of the protein structures, that benign variations tend to be found on the surface of the proteins, and that variations on evolutionary conserved residues tend to be pathogenic. These tendencies were deduced from globular proteins with standard evolutionary changes in amino acid sequences. In this study, we investigated the variation distribution on actin, one of the highly conserved proteins. Many nucleotide variations and three-dimensional structures of actin have been registered in databases. By combining those data, we found that variations buried inside the protein were rather benign and variations on the surface of the protein were pathogenic. This idiosyncratic distribution of the variation impact is likely ascribed to the extensive use of the surface of the protein for protein-protein interactions in actin.

Topological spin textures on artificial pinning landscape may show unique static and dynamic properties. Here, we computationally show that the helicity of frustrated skyrmions on an artificial square-grid obstacle pattern can be switched by a spin current pulse. The obstacle pattern is formed by defect lines with enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which could protect the skyrmion from being annihilated at the sample edge. It is found that the skyrmion driven by a moderate current shows a circular motion guided by the boundary of the obstacle pattern, while it shows an almost straight motion toward the sample edge in the absence of the obstacle pattern. By applying a short pulse current to drive the skyrmion in a sample with the obstacle pattern, we find that the helicity of the skyrmion could be switched between Bloch-type configurations favored by the dipole-dipole interaction. Besides, we demonstrate the possibility of switching the helicity of an array of skyrmions on the square-grid obstacle pattern using the same method. Our results could be useful for the helicity control of topological spin textures, and may provide guidelines for building future helicity-based spintronic functions.
