In this study, we explored the impacts of midlatitude western North Pacific (WNP) sea surface temperature (SST) on tropical cyclone (TC) activity at intraseasonal to seasonal time scales during the 2018 boreal summer. During this period, a positive SST anomaly occurred in the midlatitude WNP and subtropical central Pacific; TC activity was abnormally high under the influence of the strong Asian summer monsoon. We performed sensitivity experiments using a global cloud system-resolving model for global SST (control, CTL) and SST that were regionally restored according to midlatitude WNP climatology (MWNPCLM). TC track density in the eastern WNP was higher in CTL than in MWNPCLM, in association with large-scale atmospheric responses; enhanced monsoon westerlies in the subtropical WNP, moist rising (dry subsiding) tendencies, and reduced (enhanced) vertical wind shear in the eastern (western) WNP. Enhanced TC activity in the eastern WNP was more distinct for intense TCs and during the active phase of intraseasonal oscillation (ISO). These results suggest that the impacts of midlatitude SST anomalies can reach lower latitudes to affect TC activity via large-scale atmospheric responses and ISO, which are usually overwhelmed by the impacts of SST anomalies in the tropics and subtropics.

Background: Physiological assessments using fractional flow reserve (FFR) and resting full-cycle ratio (RFR) have been recommended for revascularization decision making. Previous studies have shown a 20% rate of discordance between FFR and RFR. In this context, the correlation between RFR and FFR in patients with renal dysfunction remains unclear. This study examined correlations between RFR and FFR according to renal function.Methods and Results: In all, 263 consecutive patients with 370 intermediate lesions were enrolled in the study. Patients were classified into 3 groups according to renal function: Group 1, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2; Group 2, 30 mL/min/1.73 m2≤eGFR<60 mL/min/1.73 m2; Group 3, eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m2. The discordance between FFR and RFR was assessed using known cut-off values for FFR (≤0.80) and RFR (≤0.89). Of the 370 lesions, functional significance with FFR was observed in 154 (41.6%). RFR was significantly correlated with FFR in all groups (Group 1, R2=0.62 [P<0.001]; Group 2, R2=0.67 [P<0.001]; Group 3, R2=0.46 [P<0.001]). The rate of discordance between RFR and FFR differed significantly among the 3 groups (Group 1, 18.8%; Group 2, 18.5%; Group 3, 42.9%; P=0.02).Conclusions: The diagnostic performance of RFR differed based on renal function. A better understanding of the clinical factors contributing to FFR/RFR discordance, such as renal function, may facilitate the use of these indices.

The authorships of 14 species-group names of chilopods introduced by Yoshioki Takakuwa in 1934 are clarified. Four names, viz., Dicellophilus latifrons Takakuwa, 1934, Tygarrup moiwaensis Takakuwa, 1934, Prolamnonyx obtusus Takakuwa, 1934, and P. dentatus Takakuwa, 1934 should be attributed to Takakuwa’s work published in Japanese in April 1934 in Volume 2, Issue No. 4 of the journal Shokubutsu oyobi Dobutsu (=Botany and Zoology). The specific names of two other Mecistocephalus species, viz., M. ongi Takakuwa, 1934 and M. brevisternalis Takakuwa, 1934, should be attributed to the Takakuwa’s work published in German in April 1934, in Volume 14, Issue No. 3 of the journal Annotationes Zoologicae Japonenses. The correct attributions of six more names, viz., Geophilus monoporus Takakuwa, 1934, Nesogeophilus kozuensis Takakuwa, 1934, N. tiosianus Takakuwa, 1934, N. littoralis Takakuwa, 1934, Thalthybius tenuicollis Takakuwa, 1934, and Cryptops japonicus Takakuwa, 1934, is to Takakuwa’s work published in Japanese in September 1934, in Volume 46, Issue No. 551 of the journal Dobutsugaku Zasshi. In addition to the 14 species-group names, the correct attribution of Mecistocephalus takakuwai, which has traditionally been attributed to the work by Karl W. Verhoeff published in November 1934, is clarified. This species was described by Takakuwa in the work published in April 1934, but nonetheless, it is concluded that its correct attribution is to Takakuwa’s work published in Japanese in October 1932 in Volume 30, Issue No. 47 of the journal Hakubutsugaku Zasshi. Synonymies showing earlier authors’ attributions are given for each of these species, and, when possible, the composition of the original type series of each of these species is inferred. In 1955 some of the type material was still said to exist, but by now all of Takakuwa’s specimens of these species seem to have been lost.

A quadrannulate leech species, Orobdella meisai sp. nov., from southern Taiwan is described. This new species is characterized by its camouflage coloration, which is unique among the known Orobdella species. Orobdella meisai is the second species of the genus to be described from Taiwan. Phylogenetic analyses using nuclear 18S rRNA, histone H3, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, tRNACys, tRNAMet, 12S rRNA, tRNAVal, 16S rRNA, tRNALeu and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 markers showed that O. meisai and another Taiwanese species, O. ketagalan Nakano and Lai, 2012, formed a supported clade. According to the results of the morphological examination and the phylogenetic position of O. meisai, morphological-phylogenetic relationships of this species and close congeners are briefly discussed.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an age-related disorder with selective dopaminergic (DA) neuronal degeneration in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The presence of mainly α-synuclein-composed Lewy bodies in DA neurons is among the disease hallmarks in the brain of patients with PD. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are powerful tools to investigate PD pathophysiology and understand its molecular and cellular mechanisms better. In this study, we generated an α-synuclein-null hiPSC line introducing a nonsense mutation in the α-synuclein-encoding SNCA alleles using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR-Cas9)-mediated gene editing. Our Western blotting analysis revealed the lack of α-synuclein protein expression in SNCA knockout hiPSC-derived cells. In addition, SNCA knockout hiPSCs retained healthy cell morphology, undifferentiated marker gene (e.g., NANOG, POU5F1, and SOX2) expression, and differentiation ability (based on the marker gene expression levels of the three germ layers). Finally, SNCA knockout hiPSC-derived DA neurons exhibited reduced vulnerability to the DA neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium. In conclusion, the SNCA knockout hiPSC line we generated would provide a useful experimental tool for studying the physiological and pathological role of α-synuclein in PD.

RNA viruses are distributed throughout various environments, and most have recently been identified by metatranscriptome sequencing. However, due to the high nucleotide diversity of RNA viruses, it is still challenging to identify novel RNA viruses from metatranscriptome data. To overcome this issue, we created a dataset of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) domains that are essential for all RNA viruses belonging to Orthornavirae. Genes with RdRp domains from various RNA viruses were clustered based on amino acid sequence similarities. A multiple sequence alignment was generated for each cluster, and a hidden Markov model (HMM) profile was created when the number of sequences was greater than three. We further refined 426 HMM profiles by detecting RefSeq RNA virus sequences and subsequently combined the hit sequences with the RdRp domains. As a result, 1,182 HMM profiles were generated from 12,502 RdRp domain sequences, and the dataset was named NeoRdRp. The majority of NeoRdRp HMM profiles successfully detected RdRp domains, specifically in the UniProt dataset. Furthermore, we compared the NeoRdRp dataset with two previously reported methods for RNA virus detection using metatranscriptome sequencing data. Our methods successfully identified the majority of RNA viruses in the datasets; however, some RNA viruses were not detected, similar to the other two methods. NeoRdRp may be repeatedly improved by the addition of new RdRp sequences and is applicable as a system for detecting various RNA viruses from diverse metatranscriptome data.

Paenibacillus xylaniclasticus strain TW1, a gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium, was isolated as a xylanolytic microorganism from the wastes of a pineapple processing factory. A gene encoding one of its xylanolytic enzymes, a β-xylosidase, was cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis revealed that this β-xylosidase, named PxXyl43A, was composed of a glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 43 subfamily 12 catalytic module and an unknown function module (UM). The full-length PxXyl43A (PxXyl43A) was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli and purified. Recombinant PxXyl43A exhibited hydrolysis activity against both p-nitrophenyl-β-D xylopyranoside (pNPX) and p-nitrophenyl-α-L-arabinofuranoside at specific activities of 250 mU/mg and 310 mU/mg, respectively. The optimal reaction pH and temperature for pNPX hydrolysis were 7.1 and 54 °C, respectively. At pH 7.0 and 54 °C, the Km and kcat for pNPX were 1.2 mM and 2.8 ± 0.15 s-1, respectively. It was also discovered that the recombinant unknown function module of PxXyl43A (PxXyl43A-UM) could bind to insoluble xylans like birchwood xylan and oat spelt xylan, whereas it did not bind to cellulosic substrates such as ball-milled cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose or lichenan. The PxXyl43A-UM’s binding constant value Ka for oat spelt xylan was 2.0 × 10-5 M-1. These results suggest that PxXyl43A possesses a novel carbohydrate-binding module, named as CBMx, specific for xylan-containing polysaccharides.

Background: The Japanese Circulation Society survey revealed that Japanese female cardiologists exhibited a trend to refuse the chairperson position; however, the causal factors remain uncertain.Methods and Results: We distributed a questionnaire survey among chairpersons of the Chugoku regional meeting in November 2022. The rate of chair acceptance at the annual meeting tended to increase as the chairperson’s experience grew (first time chairing a meeting, 25.0%; 2–3 times, 33.3%; 4–5 times, 53.8%; ≥6 times, 70.0%; P=0.021).Conclusions: Providing inexperienced members with the chance to perform the role of chairperson will lead to them accepting to chair annual meetings.

Residents were forced to evacuate owing to the radiation released after the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident following the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11/03/2021; thus, their lifestyles drastically changed. The Comprehensive Health Check (CHC) of the Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS) was performed to evaluate health statuses and prevent lifestyle-related diseases in evacuation area residents. The first part of the CHC survey is a retrospective analysis of pre- and post-disaster data on health check-ups of evacuation area residents. The second part is a cross-sectional, prospective analysis of post-disaster (fiscal year (FY) 2011–2017) data on health check-ups. Subjects were men and women living in 13 municipalities in areas surrounding the NPP in Fukushima Prefecture. Post-disaster (FY 2011–2012) overweight, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, liver dysfunction, hyperuricemia, polycythemia and atrial fibrillation cases increased from the pre-disaster (FY 2008–2010) levels. This tendency was strongest among residents who were forced to evacuate. Proportion of overweight people remained unchanged, the prevalence of liver dysfunction decreased and the proportion of people with treated hypertension and dyslipidemia increased during FY 2011–2017. Meanwhile, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and mean levels of HbA1c increased. Furthermore, Evacuees showed higher risks of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, chronic kidney diseases and liver dysfunction than non-evacuees. Therefore, residents in the evacuation area, especially evacuees, are at high risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases; therefore, it is necessary to observe health statuses and implement measures to prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

The taxonomic status of the two Japanese species of the spider genus Cybaeus L. Koch, 1868, viz., C. communis Yaginuma, 1972 and C. maculosus Yaginuma, 1972, is revisited on the basis of male and female specimens, which were collected from each type locality and the adjacent areas, along with the holotypes of both species. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1 sequence data confirmed that C. communis and C. maculosus are conspecific, and C. maculosus is synonymized with C. communis. The obtained molecular phylogenies corroborate the monophyly of C. communis, C. kirigaminensis Komatsu, 1963, C. shinkaii (Komatsu, 1970), and C. daimonji Matsuda, Ihara, and Nakano, 2020.

The optical property of fluorescent unit-conjugated aliphatic oxaboroles has been investigated. The oxaboroles provide good fluorescence quantum yields and selective recognition toward D-ribose and D-ribose containing molecules. The molecular recognition induced significant fluorescence quenching. The property of the boroles showed the possibility of the boron-based nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) sensor probe.

A new nematode species, Rhabdias kiri sp. nov., which is a lung parasite in a microhylid frog Microhyla okinavensis Stejneger, 1901 from Ishigakijima island in the Yaeyama Islands of Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan is described and illustrated. This new species differs from other congeners inhabiting East Asia and the Russian Far East in its features: i.e., shorter body length, slender body shape, narrower and shallower buccal capsule, shorter head diameter and cuticular inflation less prominent in the anterior and middle parts of the body. This is the first record of a frog parasite in Rhabdias from the Yaeyama Islands. Partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 12S rDNA genes were provided as DNA barcodes for the new species.

In relation to projections of tropical cyclone (TC) frequency in a future warmer climate, there is a debate on whether the global frequency of TC seeds (weak pre-storm vortices) will increase or not. We examined changes in the frequency of TC seeds by occurrence frequency analysis (OFA) of vortex intensity (vorticity or maximum wind speed). We directly counted the number of vortices with various intensities in high resolution global atmospheric model simulations for present and future climates. By using the OFA we showed a clear reduction of the occurrence frequency of TC seeds and relatively weak (category 2 or weaker) TCs in a future warmer climate, with an increase in the frequency of the most intense (category 5) TCs. The results suggest that the OFA is a useful method to estimate the future changes in TC frequency distribution ranging from TC seeds to the most intense TCs.

After the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident on March 11, 2011, the public of Japan became particularly concerned about the possibility of an increased risk of childhood thyroid cancer, similar to what was observed after the Chernobyl’s accident. Due to serious public health perception, there was an urgency to evaluate the baseline levels of childhood thyroid status in Fukushima prefecture. Therefore we have commenced a thyroid ultrasound examination (TUE) survey of the approximately 360,000 pediatric inhabitants (0 to 18 years of age) who lived in Fukushima at the time of the accident in October 2011. The subjects were divided into three categories according to the standardized diagnostic criteria of ultrasound findings. Category A contained the subjects whose TUE findings were intact or benign. Category B were recommended a confirmatory TUE. Category C was recommended an immediate confirmatory TUE. Results: The survey of 40,302 subjects in the first year was completed in March, 2013. There were 40,097 (99.5%), 205 (0.50%) and 0 subjects in categories A, B and C, respectively. Of the 82 category B subjects who underwent fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), 12 were diagnosed with a malignant tumor or were suspected to have malignancy. The 12 subjects received thyroid surgery and 11 thyroid cancers and one benign nodule were confirmed histologically after surgery. This is the first large-scaled TUE survey to employ sophisticated ultrasound screening and aim to evaluate the baseline frequency of childhood thyroid nodules and cysts. The results will become the golden standard of future comparative TUE in Fukushima, Japan.

Background and Aims: Several investigators have reported the significance of circulating galectin-3 in thyroid cancer patients. However, the precise meaning of circulating galectin-3 remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between serum galectin-3 levels and angiogenetic factors, and nutritional and inflammatory indicators in patients with thyroid cancer. Materials and Methods: Sixty-one patients with thyroid tumors were enrolled, comprising 47 pre-treatment thyroid cancer patients and 14 patients with benign thyroid diseases. Galectin-3, interleukin (IL)-6, vascular endothelial growth factor, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), soluble form of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), retinol binding protein, prealbumin, albumin, and transferrin were measured. C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were also investigated. Results: The amounts of circulating galectin-3 in benign disease and thyroid cancer were significantly higher than those of healthy volunteers (P < 0.001). Analysis of galectin-3 performance in distinguishing malignant disease from benign disease using a receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that the area under the curve was 0.555. There were statistically significant correlations between the circulating amount of galectin-3 and IL6, G-CSF, and sICAM-1. Serum galectin-3 showed statistically significant correlations with albumin, prealbumin, and transferrin. Circulating galectin-3 exhibited strong correlations with CRP, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, and NLR. Conclusions: Galectin-3 may be one of the key factors in the regulation of angiogenesis, inflammation, and nutrition.
