Since the discovery of emblem glyphs by Heinrich Berlin,in 1958, and the reconstruction of the dynastic history of Piedrasto the Caracol dynasty in the first series; two important personsand another possible ruler and their parents and consorts in thesecond series; and three rulers and their parents and consorts inthe third series.Negras by Tatiana Proskouriakoff, in 1960, the study of Mayaninscriptions has been advanced. The dynastic history of majorsites has now been reconstructed, and the significance of thegreater part of glyphs understood. However, it is still too earlyto say that the Mayan glyphs have been deciphered, since eventhe rules of glyphic usage are not well-known. A necessary firststep is an analysis of the glyphs. In a series of this papers, Iattempt to formulate rules of Maya glyphic writing, to study stylisticchange, and elucidate dynastic history. The Naranjo textsare examined first. The history of Naranjo is divided into three series by twointervals during which no stelaes were erected (Table 1). Firstall readable dates were extracted (Table 2) and arrangedchronologically for each series to understand the over all dynastichistory (Table 3). Next, calendrical glyphs were examined forvariations and stylistic change. The texts consist of a repetition of date and non-date glyphs. Those of series I are the simplest, and are therefore utilized asthey stand. Those of series II and III were re-written into thelinear forms for each date sentence or clause to facilitate theanalysis of complex texts (Figs. 17, 18). In the analysis of eachseries, I tried to clarify dynastic history and discover synominousglyphs (i.e., glyphic interchangeability). With respect todynastic history, I discuss six persons having a close relationship

Among the most pervasive fish traps in Asia and the Pacific, the bubois the most common device in artisanal fisheries of Philippine communities. Its practical use endures for several reasons: a) reliability of bubo technology in time and space; b) living master trappers naturally pass on their knowledge and skills from generation to generation; and c) the places where traps are set up are usually public spaces or commons such as rivers, lakes, streams, and seas. In most countries where bubo trapping is practiced, trappers are peasants. This is certainly true in the case of the Philippines. This paper presents an examination of the variety of bubo fish pots and traps inthe Philippines, specifically, and the use of bubo through time and space, along with its significance as a representation of indigenous and localknowledge that is environmentally friendly. Being small and artisanal, the bubo has proven to be adaptable to the changing climate and to rapid transformations in fishing technology

dGudzong Tibetan is spoken in Danba County, Ganzi Tibetan AutonomousPrefecture in West Sichuan, China. It belongs to “twenty-four-villages’patois,” an independent dialect group of Khams Tibetan spoken inthe rGyalrong area. Apart from my several linguistic reports, there are nodetailed descriptions of this variety of Khams Tibetan. In this paper, the phoneticanalysis of the dGudzong dialect is treated with special attention paidto the synchronic phonological framework of the dGudzong dialect as well asto several remarkable diachronic features through a comparison with WrittenTibetan forms. The phonetic analysis is divided into three parts: consonants, vowels and suprasegmentals; the diachronic analysis also mentions typologicalcharacteristics among the Khams Tibetan dialects. At the end of the article,a list of the basic vocabulary (ca. 1000 words) is added.

仏教神智協会には,S.W.R.D.

This article aims to reconstitute the rite of passage of theAinu, based mainly on T. Matsuura's unpublished hand writtenmanuscript, which for the sake of this article, I have entitled"The Illustrated Manuscript of Manners and Customs in Ezo",and in part on other documents written before the mid-NineteenthCentury.Takeshiro's manuscript can be considered the most accurateand detailed material illustrating the entire life cycle of theAinu. It contains the following the descriptions: a legend ontheir progenitor, teaching of sexual intercourse, children's playand games (and learning the art of life through them), a boy'swearing a loincloth for the first time, a boy's wearing a formalsapanpe for the first time to enter adulthood, tattooing (a girl'sbeing tatooed to prepare for marriage), the hot water trial (judging a crime by putting one's hands into hot water), marriageceremony, civilities, exchange of tobacco, iyomante (a ritual tosend back the spirit of bears), treatment of disease and shamanism, funeral rites, burning the house of the departed, and specialfuneral rites for a person who died an unnatural death.Adding upsor (women's loincloth expressing their descent)to these descriptions, we can reconstitute the entirety of the riteof passage as elucidated by Takeshiro. No Japanese has paid enough attention to the concepts ondeath and rebirth of the Ainu, and Takeshiro, too, did not fullyunderstand them. But what is deserving of special mention isthat he clearly stated that there was a social order in Ainusociety, which was in no way inferior to that of Japanese society. The Ainu, in those days, were governed by the Japanese, from whom they suffered discrimination and exploitation.By trying to publish the manuscript, Takeshiro intended tocorrect such a false view of the Ainu, but, unfortunately, hisambition was not realized.

Rinzo Mamiya, a Japanese explorer, reached the Siberiancontinent via Sakhalin island in 1809. He is famous for his rediscoveryof the Tatar strait. He also gained immortal fame forhis ethnographic survey of the Gilyak living on the lower Amur, and of the native population of Sakhalin. He described theabove-mentioned peoples in Totatsu Kiko (Travels among the EastTatar), and Hokui Bunkai Yowa (The Story of the Northern Tribes)written in 1910. These works were translated into German andincluded in Nippon, Ph. Franz von Siebold's book, written in 1832.Mamiya's ethnographic descriptions have contributed to theacademical world. Leopold von Schrenck, who did research onthe lower Amur region from 1854 to 1856, and published DieVolker des Amur-Landes, consulted Mamiya's work. Later, at thebeginning of the twentieth century, Shternberg carried out hisfield trip among the Gilyak of the lower Amur region, and contributedmuch to the study of the Gilyak society and religion. Hetoo appreciated Rinzo Mamiya's work.Under the present soviet regime, Chuner Taksami, a Gilyakscholar, and Anna Smolyak, a scholar from Mosco,w, are carryingout a systemetic study of the Gilyak people.I have tried to pursue the ethnographic value of Mamiya'swork and studied it critically referring to work done by laterscholars. This is a first attempt in Japan. There is no doubtthat Mamiya's work has immortal classical value in the field of theethnographic study of the lower Amur people and the nativepeople of Sakhalin island.

This paper focuses on folk remedies in the Edo period. During thisperiod, especially from the late 18th century, people were concerned with howto protect the lives of mothers and babies, and the remedies were made to dothat.According to historical demographic research, the mortality rate ofinfants was high during the Edo period, with many mothers losing their livesin childbirth. For those who hoped to continue their family line (Ie), protectingthe lives of mothers and babies was an important issue. Therefore, duringthat period, a variety of folk remedies emerged based on everyday experienceand knowledge. My study looks into two cases based on local materials drawn from theSendai Han ('clan') of Japan's Tohoku region. First, upper-class farmers in theSendai clan wrote prescriptions for various cures to be used in difficult childbirth.Second, in the Ichinoseki clan (a branch of the Sendai clan), a localphysician left a manuscript of folk remedies for dystocia (=difficult birth). The medical treatments show how dangerous pregnancy was for the livesof mothers and babies. In other words, for the people of that period, pregnancywas a crisis that happened to a woman's body. Through these primaryresources, I want to explore how people viewed the relationship between lifeand the body and recognized its inner nature. The following became clarified as a result of my consideration. The folkremedies that represented the accumulation of wisdom gained through dailylives were widely available through transcribed copies. The prescriptionsrelated to pregnancy and childbirth, particularly refractory dystocia, usingplants, animals, products of nature, and excreta from purified human bodies. That was an attempt to transform nature that was threatening into nature thatgave blessings, restoring the healthy state by integrating nature and humans, thereby removing the hardships manifested in the body. It clearly shows howpeople in the Edo period viewed humans and nature as inseparable.
