Many experiments have been made to clear the true state of adhesion coefficient μ which significantly affects the performance of rolling stock. However, such experiments have been made mainly in laboratory rooms, and the experiments made on main lines have been simply a medley of data only at the spot of wheel slipping. The author employed a "Slipping adhesion test truck" built on a new idea of realizing the measurement of μ continually while running, and observed the true state of μ along the mainlines. From the results thus obtained, the author derived the statistically processed μ, and analyzed the relation between μ and the rate of wheel slipping. In addition, the author referred to the various factors that reduced the value of μ.

In the social context of an aging workforce at the labor intensive manufacturing sectors, we discuss an assisting system for older workers who have excellent skills though their physical ability to perform iterative tasks at a constant speed with high quality. "Skill-Assist" which is proposed in this paper is a new type of assisting system which varies its mechanical impedance to give workers who have been working under the lifetime employment system a sense of achievement in being again able to accomplish the skilled tasks they were capable of when younger. This paper discusses the control algorithm of Skill-Assist. First, a criterion for changing the impedance of Skill-Assist in response to task condition variations is explained to propose. "Phase-Dependent Impedance Control". Second, desirable impedance patterns are experimentally determined. The patterns are required to produce a good subjective operational feel and precise positioning when maneuvering Skill-Assist. Finally, the effectiveness of Skill-Assist is verified under more practical positioning tasks, which is evaluated based on the subjective operational feel, physical stress, and productivity.

It has long been believed that the tip of a knife-edge has a single small radius and the radius becomes larger with abrasion during daily use. Recently, for the most popular knife made of SUS 420J2, the authors have found that the tip has two micro-blades (the secondary blades) with a groove between them along the knife-edge and the groove grows and thus its width becomes larger with cutting operations. In this paper, this evidence is confirmed to be true even for the knife of a heat resisting alloy-SUH3 and a high-hardness Zirconia Ceramics, and thus it is concluded that the formation of such groove and its growth is a general phenomenon for almost all knife-edges. For each tested blade, the relationship between the cut piece number of paper (NCP ; the cutting performance) and the repetition number of abrading operation (Nt) is approximately expressed as an exponential relation. Ideas to express the durability of cutting performance (Nt*), the total cutting performance (TNP) and the feeling of cutting paper (ACP) through the service period are proposed and quantitatively evaluated for the tested materials. It is surprisingly found that even for the brittle Ceramics, the relationship between the groove spread and Nt is almost the same as those for SUS420J2 and SUH3. In comparison with SUH3 and SUS420J2, Zirconia Ceramics has the highest durability Nt*, the best total cutting performance (TNP) and the best feeling of cutting (ACP). The ratio of the durability, total performance and the feeling of cutting to those of SUS420J2 are 28, 40 and 1.4 for SUH3, and 48, 71 and 1.5 for Zirconia Ceramics, respectively.

A method is proposed to analyze dynamic response of a rocket-launcher system at lift-off. In this paper, rocket-launcher system is modeled as finite element Bernoulli-Euler beams connected with two slippers which are modeled as linear springs. A beam element with a moving spring is devised to represent the rocket-launcher interaction. Coupled equations of motion with time-varying coefficients are derived and solved by using direct method such as the Wilson θ method to calculate the dynamic response of the system. To verify the validity of this method, dynamic response is calculated by using the data of M-3S rocket-launcher system. Two rocket models, rigid-body and elastic-body models, are used in this calculation. The numerical results obtained from two models are compared and discussed.

An automobile simulator experiment was carried out in order to develop a method of prediction of sleepiness based on mainly physiological parameters. Twelve subjects participated in the study. First, criteria variables of sleepiness were investigated since such variables have not been clear in many previous studies. Rated sleepiness based on facial expression was examined as a criteria variable in this research. Rated sleepiness by two examiners gave high correspondence (0.755), and mean correlation coefficient between this rated sleepiness and the subjects' self-rating sleepiness was also high (0.794). These results show that this rated sleepiness is considered to be reliable and valid as a criteria variable. Second, both physiological parameters and the driving performances were adopted as explanatory variables. Cross-correlation analysis between the rated sleepiness and these parameters showed that α/β at posterior-midline (Pz), blink duration, the rate of long blink and heart rate were relevant as general indexes of slepiness. Methods of prediction of sleepiness based on these results are mentioned in our second report.

The crossed axle traction drive developed by the authors is applied to a new mechanism of CVT. The input and output shafts with conical disks are parallel and a idler shaft having conical rollers at both ends is placed perpendicular to the input/output shafts. This idler shaft transmits torque from the input shaft to the output shaft and its movement produces the speed variation by changing the contact point between the input/output disk and the idler roller. The purposes of this study are to propose the new CVT mechanism, to develop a prototype to confirm the CVT to work and to evaluate the transmission efficiency. The design procedure of disk and roller are shown by geometrical analysis and the method to apply contact force by using a loading cam is examined. The influence of a spin caused by changing the contact point and torque loss of bearings to the. transmission efficiency are evaluated. The range of speed changing ratio of the prototype is 0.5 to 2. The efficiency of 75% was obtained in case of input torque 10 Nm at uniform speed.

This study discusses the communication between autonomous robots and humans through the development of a robot which has an emotion model. The model refers to the internal secretion system of humans and it has four kinds of the hormone parameters to use to adjust various internal conditions such as motor output, cooling' fan output and sensor gain. We surveyed 126 visitors at '97 International Robot Exhibition held in Tokyo (Oct. 1997) in order to exaluate psychological impressions of the robot. As the result, the human friendliness of the robot was confirmed and some factors concerning with the human robot emotional communication were discovered.

The present study is concerned with the estimation of power in Karate-doh. The measuring method and numerical estimation for impact forces produced by Karate-doh hand techniques such as Syutoh-uchi, Tettsui-uchi and so on, are discussed by experiments (by means of Tameshi-wari) and numerical simulations. In the beginning, an impact experiment of simply supported concrete beams was conducted to examine the impact response and the impact breaking of the concrete beam. And then Tameshi-wari of simply supported concrete beams was performed. In order to understand the mechanism of impact breaking of concrete beams by Karate-doh hand techniques, a numerical simulation was also carried using a dynamic finite element method with a Newmark-β method. The impact force generated between the hand and the concrete beam was estimated to be beyond 4.5 kN. It was also found that a reaction at both ends of the beam was almost never generated by virtue of the dominant modes of bending deformation of the beam. This indicates that, by means of Tameshi-wari, the impact breaking of the concrete beam floating in air is quite within the bounds of possibility. Therefore Tameshi-wari for concrete beams suspended in air was also tried and achieved the predicted results.

Orbicularis oris superior (OOS), orbicularis oris inferior (OOI), levator anguli oris (LAO), depressor anguli oris (DAO), and mentalis (Ment) are considered as typical perioral muscles that contribute to the force and pressure occurence in and around lip aperture. This study presents the experimental and analytical results that show correlationships between eledrical muscle activities and mechanical parameters on bilabial closing force, puckering force, POM (perioral muscle) value and so forth. Besides, zero-lag correlation coefficients between rectified and smoothed SEMG signals of LAO and DAO was constantly higher than other muscle combinations including OOS-OOI combination considered to be most closely related with lip movement. Among lip tasks, prominently high correlation between LAO and DAO was shown when subjects tried to close their lip bilabially at principally distal part. Consequently authors succeeded to prove the great importance of the coordination between LAO and DAO for producing bilabial consonants, drinking and eating, pooling saliva in oral cavity, and others, while the applicability of POM meter to myofunctional therapy is obscured.

At the first step, I studied the driver model in the drift cornering. At the second step, I studied the technique by which the performance of running in the vehicle at the drift cornering was improved. I have understood the driver is steered by feed back the body slip angle and the body slip angle velocity at the drift cornering. Moreover, I have understood importance in the vehicle movement performance improvement the cornering force characteristic where the maximum cornering force of the tire was exceeded.

In order to realize universal 8-legged walking of just as creatural spiders and adapt to environments, this paper is concerned with cooperative walking control for a spider-type robot. At first, we examine how a spider walks on the floor to ascertain its gait. Second, a spider-type robot which is possible to walk by 8-legs is made experimentally. And using our trial robot, we perform walking experiments to check whether various walking types are possible. The walking types are forward, beck, diagonal, revolution and R-advance. Next, we observe whether a spider reacts well to the environment and then how a spider walks. A creatural spider responds to environmental information by adapting various walking forms, in cases of escaping from natural enemies or fear, wandering around for hunting game and so on. Finally, the mechanisms of these walking forms are examined and verified through simulation experiment. And, we discuss 8-legged cooperative control. The experiment uses various information such as fatigue, fear and distance. Moreover, fuzzy theory is used for controlling the walking velocity by expressing obscure environmental information.

When a robot is used for doing work such as laser processing or water-jet processing, not only the trajectory of the end-effector but also its velocity is very important from the viewpoint of the processing accuracy. On the other hand, several curve-interpolation methods have been suggested, but it is cannot be said with certainty that the correct velocity control of the trajectory is possible. In this study, in order to solve this problem, a method using the clothoidal curve is introduced, and this method enables the velocity control with high accuracy for any trajectory.

The induction motor is used in many industries. These days motor noise reduction is often required due to environmental concerns. This paper is concerned with the reduction of motor noise. The relationship of exciting force and vibration mode of the stator core is analyzed. An exciting force as an electromagnetic radial force was applied to the stator core. Analysis was performed for the case of a continuous distributed force and the case of a discrete multipoint exciting force. The vibration behavior of the core was analyzed theoretically, numerically (FEM) and experimentally with respect to modes, frequency and phase of exciting force. It has been confirmed that : 1. in the continuous distributed excitation, the core vibrates when M=±N and the exciting frequency coincides with the natural frequency, 2. in the discreted multipoint excitation, the core vibrates when M±N=mK. Here, N is the natural frequency mode, "is the excitation frequency mode, m is an integer, and K is the number of applied points of the exciting force.

This paper deals with a mathematical model of the mechanics of rigid bodies connected by rotary joints. The method is based on the Lagrangian formulation. The kinetic energy is written in terms of the angular velocities. The expression for the kinetic energy has a homogeneous quadratic form in the angular velocity, the coefficient matrix of which is given by the products of triangular matrices. The equations of motion are derived from the Lagrange's equations for the quasi-coordinates, the angular velocities of the bodies. The equations of motion become recursive forms due to the structure of the expression of the kinetic energy of the system. The algorithm of the inverse dynamics, which follows from the equations of motion, becomes also a recursive form like the algorithm based on the Newton-Euler equations of motion. Since the algorithm is based on the Lagrangian formulation, it can be extended to more complex systems that include flexible bodies, the constraints of which limit the motion of the systems, and so on.

The Dynamic Soaring is the soaring technique making use of the wind gradient. The order, Albatross belongs to, includes several species which use this technique and have various scale. Main conclusion is as follows: They practice almost physically similar dynamic soaring. The larger one practices a larger dynamic soaring and requires a stronger wind than the smaller one does, in the wind near the sea surface. Such a scale effect corresponds with the fact that a Wandering Albatross lives in the zone of the westerlies of the Southern hemisphere; on the other hand, a Streaked Shearwater which is smaller than it lives in areas where it is not so windy. But if the wind profile was almost linear, the said relation between the scale of a bird and the wind strength would be reversed.

This paper deals with the effects of axle misalignment of a truck with independently rotating wheels (IRWs) on the wheel lateral force and the flange wear. Since the truck with IRWs lacks for self-steering ability, it is concerned that the wheel continues flange contact with rail due to the effects of axle misalignment in parallelity and the flange wears rapidly under the continuous flange contact condition. Numerical simulations are carried out, using an analytical vehicle model with the axle misalignment. Obtained results are as follows : Even if misalignment is a little, the vehicle with IRWs which dose not have self steering ability tends to run under the flange contact condition, and then continuous lateral force acts between the flange and the rail. The vehicle with IRWs, which has axle misalignment only in the lateral setting, does not have tendency of continuous flange contact. In the range of misalignment in parallelity considered in this paper, the wheel lateral force increases with the increase of the misalignment, and the wheel lateral force of IRW increases more than that of the solid wheelset. The wheel lateral forces generated due to the misalignment are equivalent to the ones generated in the curved tracks, the radii of which make the attack angles corresponding to the misalignment.

In order to realize a power assisting suit for assisting a nurse caring a patient is her arm, a hardness sensor of muscle using load cell and a pneumatic rotary actuator utilizing pressure cuffs have been developed. The power assisting suit consists of shoulders, arms waist and legs made of aluminum, and is fitted on the nurse body. The power assisting suit was originated with the concept of a master and slave system in one body. The arms, waist and legs have the pneumatic rotary actuators. The pneumatic rotary actuators construct with pressure cuffs sandwiched between thin plates. The action of the arms, waist and legs of the nurse were sensed with the muscle hardness sensor utilizing load cell with diaphragm mounted a sensing tip. The dent of the sensing tip corresponds to the hardness of the muscle so that exerting muscle force produces electric signal. This paper gives the design and characteristics of the power assisting suit using the cuff type pneumatic rotary actuators and the muscle hardness sensor verifying its practicability.

The friction coefficient μ on the contact point position between a wheel flange and a rail is said to seriously affect on the occurrence of the wheel-climb derailment. However, the method to quantitatively and exactly evaluate the μ has not suggested until to the present. The authors proposed a method to easily and exactly evaluate the value, and made it clear by an experiment, employing a 1/5 scale model track and model truck. The result obtained through the experiment indicates that the value on dry rails has a similarity with that of the adhesion coefficient, and that the dry rail on the main line keeps the value at high level. Using the μ value obtained by the studies, the risk of the wheel-climb derailment was evaluated. As the result of the evaluation, they found that higher μ value than the conventionally used one should be introduced for the risk evaluation of the derailment, and that very short term lateral force below 60 ms should be observed on the steep curvatures.

A mathematical method of complex modal analysis and an experimental identification procedure of modal parameters for nonproportionally damped mechanical systems have been established thus far. However, the physical structure of complex modes of nonproportionally damped systems has not been thoroughly understood. This paper deals with a physical and graphical interpretation of complex modes in comparison with real modes of proportionally damped systems using the complex plane and the complex vector space. It is explained why the resonance vibration of nonproportional-ly damped systems does not exhibit the natural mode shape which appears in the free vibration of the same system. The condition that makes the resonance vibration mode approximately coincide with the natural mode shape of the free vibration is discussed.

The Meihan highway linking Kameyama in Mie Prefecture and Tenri in Nara Prefecture is one of most accident-prone areas in Japan. Representative accident factors that have been identified for the Meihan highway are chronic speeding and complex road alignments, including many sharp curves and steep slopes. One particular section is known as the “Omega curve” as the road shape is similar to the Greek character “Ω”. In this study, the probable effects of proposed plans to improve the road alignment of the Nakahata section are investigated by performing driving simulations to identify typical hazards, ranging from traffic conflicts to vehicle accidents. It was found that incidents that begin as a minor traffic conflicts can frequently escalate to become a fatal accidents. It was also found that improved road alignment generally reduces the required tire forces. For typical traffic conflict patterns reproduced using the driving simulator, it was found that road alignment resulted in considerable improvements in safety indexes which are effective indicators for the occurrence of rear-end collisions.
