This paper challenges two generally accepted views. The first one is that “Sansuijin Keirin Mondo-” written by Nakae Cho-min is considered as the first Japanese book which argues the government and international politics by means of a dialogue style. The second one is that although “Bampo- Seiri” by Ga Noriyuki has been said to be the first translation of “De l'Esprit des Lois” written by Montesquieu, this book was actually a secondhand translation through the English version of the French original. // This paper will examine “To-sei Isakairon,” “Ritsurei Seigi” and “Ritsurei Seigi no Taii.” Particular concerns in this research are the following: firstly, “To-sei Isakairon,” published by Shimizu Usaburo- (1829-1910) in 1882, represented three sorts of governments: the republic, the constitutional monarchy and the monarchy; secondly, the style of this story appears much more dialogic than “Sansuijin Keirin Mondo-.” The former seems to be rather light and comical, intented to the ordinary people; thirdly, “Ritsurei Seigi” and “Ritsurei Seigi no Taii,” translated by Suzuki Tadakazu and published by Shimizu Usaburo- through his company, were the translations of the French original “De l'Esprit des Lois,” unlike “Banpo- Seiri.” // Shimizu Usaburo- was one of the modern Japanese pioneers of cultural exchange during the Meiji period between Japan and western countries, in particular, France and the USA. After his participation in the International Exhibition held in 1867 in Paris, he founded a new trading company in order to import numerous materials such as books of philosophy, science and jurisprudence as well as dental instruments. As a well-known ‘ Hiragana-ronsha, ’ he contributed an article about an orthographical system to “Meiroku Zasshi.” // This research describing the dialogue of “To-sei Isakairon,” explicates the influences of Western thoughts, focusing on Usaburo-'s way of thinking about governments.

We propose a THz patch antenna, in which THz ac current is fed by intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). The radiation power of the antenna for three different feed positions is calculated using the finite-difference time-domain method. We predict that the antenna will radiate sub-milliwatt terahertz waves with high radiation efficiency of over 20%. The maximum radiation power will depend on the position of the feed. We also show that the radiation characteristics of the antenna are described well by the equivalent inductance-capacitance-resistance circuit model.

We theoretically study the phase relaxation of excitons in doped single-walled carbon nanotubes caused by elastic scattering between an exciton and an electron. Our calculation of the spectral linewidth, that is the inverse of the scattering rate, demonstrates that this dephasing process is unexpectedly suppressed in doped single-walled carbon nanotubes, giving rise to anomalous nonlinear behavior as a function of the electron density. A detailed investigation reveals that the logarithmic correction of the exciton self-energy plays a critical role in the exciton-carrier scattering dynamics.

The synthesis of the 3'-deoxyapionucleoside 3"-triphosphates (apioNTPs) having the four natural nucleobases and their enzymatic incorporation into a DNA-DNA primer-template have been tried. Therminator DNA polymerase was shown to incorporate these apioNTPs effectively giving 43mer DNA-apioNA chimera.

On average, male birds other than social father sire more than 10% of all offspring. Levels of extra-pair paternity below 5% of offspring are rarely found and are now considered worthy of explanation in monogamous birds. We recorded the lowest levels of paternity loss ever reported in a population of Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica. The levels of extra-pair paternity were below 5% of offspring (7/243 in 2005 and 1/53 in 2006). We discuss our results in relation to the density-dependence of extra-pair paternity.

Mountain–plain transitional landscapes are especially important as groundwater recharge zones. In this study, the oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopic composition (δ18O and δD) of water and hydrochemical information were employed to quantify contribution ratios of different sources of groundwater recharge in the Ashikaga area of central Japan. The study area is situated between the Ashio Mountains and the Kanto Plain, and the Watarase River flows into the region parallel to the mountain–plain boundary. There was an obvious isotopic altitude effect in and around the study area (−0.25‰ per 100 m for δ18O and −1.7‰ per 100 m for δD), and the isotopic signatures of water from the Watarase River and local precipitation could be clearly distinguished. In addition, it was possible to identify the occurrence of mountain block recharge using hydrochemistry, specifically the chloride ion. End-member mixing analysis using δ values and Cl− concentration revealed spatial variation in the contribution ratios of the river water, mountain block groundwater and local precipitation. Seepage from the Watarase River contributed a significant amount of water to aquifers along its channel. The river-recharged water reached 5 km from the channel in the south (i.e., plain) side and 1.6 km or less in the north (i.e., mountain) side. Remarkable mountain block recharge was observed in the foothills near the axis of the syncline, which has layers of chert and sandstone that likely hinder river channel seepage into the mountain-side aquifers. Major factors controlling the river-water contribution ratio include the distance from the river channel, topography, and hydrogeological settings. The results presented here should facilitate integrated management of groundwater and surface water resources.

The maintenance of multiple ornaments by animals can be explained when those multiple ornaments are sexually selected. However, there have been only a few studies of sexual selection on multiple ornaments. We investigated sexual selection on two ornaments, plumage coloration and white spots in the tail, in a population of Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica gutturalis in Japan. There was sexual dimorphism in throat coloration and in the size of the white spots in the tail. Males with a less saturated (colourful) throat and larger white spots in the tail bred earlier than others, indicating a mating advantage for these males. These trends are what would be expected if these ornaments were indeed sexually selected.

By gating cell cycle progression to specific times of the day, the intracellular circadian clock is thought to reduce the exposure of replicating cells to potentially hazardous environmental and endogenous genotoxic compounds.
