To find an effective way to prevent falling, I have studied the ability to sustain a standing posture and falling mechanism. To clarify the association between antigravity muscles and the ability to sustain static standing posture, I measured the ability to sustain a static posture for 30 minutes using the stabilometer, as well as the thickness and strength of antigravity muscles. The results are as follows : 1. There were significant associations between the balancing abilities and the thickness and strength of muscles, especially the lower leg muscles. 2. As for gravity center balancing, those with stronger antigravity muscles were more unstable than those with weaker muscles. 3. As for gravity center positioning, males with stronger muscles tended to have forward-bent posture, while females with weaker muscles backward-bent posture. 4. Females were more stable than males in gravity center balancing and positioning.

Brown rice is commonly considered to have an effect on various diseases including life-style related diseases. Pre-germinated brown rice is characterized by its easier cooking properties and better taste after cooking when compared with normal brown rice. Because of the rich content of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in brown rice, which can prevent the increase of blood pressure, the market for brown rice is now growing. However, the taste of the cooked pre-germinated brown rice is still unsatisfactory because of the peculiar smell. We performed a study aimed at establishing a processing method for obtaining a brown rice product with more GABA accumulation than in the commercially available brown rice products by introducing a high-pressure treatment. The result was that the content of GABA in the obtained brown rice is higher than that in the commercially available brown rice products and the functional components such as ferulic acids and oryzanol are also retained. Further, such brown rice with increased GABA accumulation was found to be digested more quickly than the commercially available brown rice products when those cooked rice products were evaluated by the artificial digestion method. The GABA-increased brown rice was also found to compare favorably with commercially available normal brown rice in terms of taste after cooking.

玄米を微量加水 (玄米水分約17%以下までは加水速度約0.5%/h, 17%以上では0.5~1.2%/h) で水分23%程度まで調質し, その後約12h放置すると, GABA (γ-アミノ酪酸) 含有量が15~20mg/100gにまで増加し, しかも重胴割れ率が低いために搗精にはほとんど支障がなかった。この玄米を搗精した精白米 (精米歩留り約90%) と胚芽米 (精米歩留り約95%) のGABA含有量は, それぞれ玄米の約83%と約91%を示し, 高い含有量であった。これより, GABA成分が高くてしかも発芽玄米に比べて食べやすい高機能性米を調製加工できる新たな方法が見出された。

Three species of marine nemerteans described and illustrated from Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, include one new genus and two new species: these are the monostiliferous hoplonemerteans Thallasionemertes leucocephala gen. et sp. nov. and Correanemertes polyophthalma sp. nov. A new colour variety of the heteronemertean Micrura callima is also reported, this species previously only being known from Rottnest Island, Western Australia. A key for the field identification of the marine nemerteans recorded from coastal Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef is provided.

In UK, the death of Elizabeth II automatically should place her son Charles, Prince of Wales, on the throne. There should be no difficulty at all as to who inherits the crown; no civil strife between her children, Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. In the past, however, this peaceful state of crowning was not common, on the contrary, coronations often led to bloodshed; the first in succession to the throne did not always manage to mount the throne. When King Edward the Confessor died childless in 1066, a question, who should succeed the throne, occurred naturally. Edgar, who was the grandson of King Edmund, was one, Norwegian-Danish King Harald was also one, and Guillaume, the Duke of Normandy was another. Nevertheless Harold, the son of Earl Godwin, took a drastic measure: he had two services on the same day; King Edward's burial and his own coronation, which was extremely unusual even at that time, and which eventually aggravated the matter. The above three people appealed Harold's coronation. Edgar, however, was regarded too small to succeed the throne. King Harald from Norway invaded the north of England and occupied York temporarily but was finally defeated by newly crowned King Harold at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Guillaume with a stronger claim against Harold was different from the two. He was waiting for the good time for a battle with Harold. Guillaume was born in 1027 at Falaise in Normandy, France, as an illegitimate child of the sixth Duke Robert of Normandy. King Edward's mother, Emma, was from Normandy, and Guillaume and King Edward were relatives. Guillaume made an invasion at Pevensey with a great fleet of warships in 1066. As is well-known, he completely beat King Harold's army at the Battle of Hastings. Nevertheless, it was more than two months before he crowned himself as William the Conqueror, King of England. This summer, I visited cities and towns in Normandy which were related to Guillaume, and also drove along the south-eastern coast of England. This means that I tried to follow the steps of Guillaume's conquest of England.
