This paper is to inquire the whereabouts and significance for the diffusion routes of Jiu-Jitsu (traditional Japanese martial arts) since the turn of the last century from the 19^<th> to 20^<th> century, by viewing through the two Americans, Risher W. Thornberry and John J. O'brien, from the time of having learned Jiu-Jitsu in Nagasaki foreign settlement and to their 30 years of activities after returning to the U.S. One of the main assignments to examine in studies of sport and physical education in late years is to take stock of an ethnocentric interpretation by approaching to the history of propagation abroad of Budo (a collective term of modernized Japanese martial arts) with special focus on bilateral cultural relationship. This paper approaches the following two points accordingly: i) To inquire the chance of the foreigners to encounter Japanese culture, the first point is to analyze the meaning of cultural exchange on local level by looking into Nagasaki foreign settlement. ii) To inquire the social factor of O'brien to get comprehensive sphere of activities by looking into his movement after returning to the U.S. iii) To review into the actual conditions for acceptance of Jiu-Jitsu as military martial arts through the activities of Thornberry at the camp, and study about figuration of cultural succession on the basis of the relationship between after retired him and his pupil. The conclusions of this paper are shown as followings. Firstly, the particular social situation of Nagasaki foreign settlement provided an opportunity for the Americans to accept Jiu-Jitsu. Moreover, according to Thornberry's textbook he had retained cultural identity of Jigo-Tenshin-Ryu (one of the styles of Jiu-Jitsu), but on the other hand the potentiality for this identity to fade out was already there. Secondly, O'brien's textbook points out that a fusion of Jiu-Jitsu and Physical Culture, and this mixture was variously symbolized through the local media. Furthermore, his recreational activities contributed to construct various diffusion routes. Thirdly, Thornberry's Jiu-Jitsu was accepted as military martial arts as the camps demand. On the other hand the succession of Thornbery's Jiu-Jitsu to his disciple Samuel K. Linck indicates that the first did not quite lose the identity of Jigo-Tenshin-Ryu. However, Linck did not succeed Thornberry's Jiu-Jitsu entirely, thus there was a chance of resulting the alternatives. To sum up my main points, the successors were connected one another through Jiu-Jitsu, but the binding force was limited. Thus various requests from the local society were subsumed in the process of succession, and in this meaning its mechanism is not accumulated very easily. However, this kind of flexibility played a role of having made their Jiu-Jitsu well known into the local population.

We report the case of a patient who, after posterior lumbar fixation for lumbar spinal canal stenosis, presented with difficulty in reaching the gluteal cleft with the right upper limb from the dorsal side while wiping after excretion and inevitably used the left upper limb. Through observation of a simulated wiping motion with the right upper limb, a decrease in the ability to perform the following movements was suspected: moving the pelvis from a posterior to an anterior inclination with flexion, internally rotating the left hip joint, extending the trunk, elevating the right pelvis and flexing the trunk to the right side, and rotating the trunk to the right. Examination based on these observations identified decreased tonus of the bilateral internal oblique muscles of the abdomen and multifidus and longissimus muscles, and increased tonus of the bilateral iliocostal muscles to be the primary causes. Therefore, surface electromyography was performed, and electromyographic waveform patterns of the aforementioned trunk muscles during simulated wiping motion with the right upper limb were compared with those of healthy subjects. No activity was detected in the bilateral internal oblique muscles of the abdomen. The patterns of the other muscles were similar, albeit with decreased activity. During physical therapy, the patient retained the physiological curvature of the spine, with the pelvis in the center of the anterior and posterior inclinations and the trunk extended in a sitting position. Furthermore, right pelvic elevation and right rotation of the trunk accompanied by right-sided flexion were promoted while shifting the body weight in the left anterior direction. Satisfactory wiping motion with the right upper limb was acquired through this therapy. This case report suggests that when examining the wiping motion after excretion, it is necessary to evaluate the ability to elevate the pelvis and flex and rotate the trunk to the required side while retaining the physiological curvature of the spine.

This article aims to clarify concrete contents of teachers' duties of care and the measures they should take in case of a natural disaster. The results of our analysis of certain case judgments, mainly the Okawa Elementary School case, reveal that teachers concretely bear the following duties of care in case of a natural disaster. Prior to the outbreak of a natural disaster, teachers bear the duties to establish crisis control manuals and train themselves to act according to the manuals. After the outbreak of a natural disaster, teachers must positively collect the information regarding the natural disaster and analyze it in order to anticipate the measures necessary to be taken for ensuring their students’ safety. Furthermore, after the outbreak of damage, teachers bear the obligation to rescue their students as and when a rescue operation is possible. To fulfill such duties, firstly, the range of teachers’ duties should be clarified. Then, it is indispensable for teachers to cooperate with the experts of the natural disaster.

The subject of this study was to examine biological aspects and predatory abilities of predatory bugs that prey on stored-product insects. Biological controls in stored products are being regarded with increasing interest since they are nontoxic and do not damage human health or the environment. Several species of predatory bugs have been studied as biological control agents. Specifically, Xylocoris flavipes (Reuter) is the most studied candidate biological control agent among predatory bugs. X. flavipes is advantageous because it has a high population increase capacity and wide distribution. X. flavipes has been reported to suppress populations of small insects, but it can not predate large insects and internal grain feeding insects. As Amphibolus venator (Klug), Peregrinator biannulipes (Montrouzier & Signoret) and Joppeicus paradoxus Puton can attack large insects, more research should be carried out on the suppression effects of these bugs. A combination of several biological control agents that can attack different types of insects will be needed to control whole pest complexes in various stored environments.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the normal range of motion of the canine tibiofemoral joint and the movement of the tibia relative to the femur, especially the internal/external rotation under flexion. Right stifle joints were harvested from eight skeletally mature Beagle dogs, which were euthanized for reasons unrelated to this study. All muscle tissue was removed from the limbs prior to testing. Flexion and extension tests were conducted using a robotic manipulator with six degrees-of-freedom. Cranial/caudal and medial/lateral displacement and varus/valgus and internal/external rotation were measured at various degrees of flexion. We observed that the tibia rotated internally at an increasing flexion angle with mean peak internal and external rotations of 20.0° ± 13.8° and 4.5° ± 3.6°, respectively. The tibia also tended to displace cranially at an increasing flexion angle, with a mean peak cranial displacement of 8.9 ± 4.4 mm; there was minimal medial displacement when increasing the flexion angle. Valgus rotation also tended to occur at an increasing flexion angle. During the flexion of the canine stifle joint, approximately 20° of internal tibial rotation occurred around the longitudinal axis, along with a rollback motion involving the cranial displacement of the tibia.

Brachycephalic airway syndrome (BAS) is a common disease in certain “flat-faced” dog breeds. This syndrome includes stenotic nares, elongated and thickened soft palate, laryngeal collapse, and tracheal hypoplasia. Pharyngeal collapse is also commonly observed, but it is unclear if laryngopharynx motions are merely sequelae or actually contribute to BAS respiratory symptoms. Laryngopharynx motion was imaged using dynamic four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) during spontaneous respiration in four dogs with different BAS types. Dynamic 4D-CT showed laryngopharynx motion in the following order during inspiration: pharyngeal collapse, contraction, and laryngospasm. We concluded that dynamic 4D-CT is a highly-detailed diagnostic approach for detecting laryngopharynx motion. Pharyngeal contraction during inspiration appears to contribute toward the worsening of clinical respiratory signs of BAS.

流体シミュレーションは製造業などの製品設計フェイズで重要となるCAE (Computer Aided Engineering) のひとつである. より最適な設計を実現するうえで流体シミュレーションの計算時間短縮は重要な課題のひとつであり, 近年は機械学習を使用した高速化手法の試みが盛んになりつつある. 本研究では流体シミュレーション手法のひとつMPS法 (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) に着目し, MPS法の一部を機械学習モデルに置き換え高速化する手法を提案する. 具体的にはナビエ・ストークス方程式の圧力勾配項を求める際に, MPS法では陰解法形式になっている圧力計算部分を, 10種類の特徴量からなる入力と勾配ブースティング回帰木による回帰モデルに代替し, 流体シミュレーションを高速化する. 最後に提案手法の定性的挙動を流体シミュレーションのトイプロブレムであるダム崩壊問題の数値計算で確認し, 提案手法の結果が従来手法と同様の挙動を示すことを示す.
