On December 31, 2019, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission announced an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), China is now at a critical period in the control of the epidemic. The Chinese Government has been taking a series of rapid, comprehensive, and effective prevention and control measures. As the pandemic has developed, a fact has become apparent: there is a serious dearth of emergency medical supplies, and especially an extreme shortage of personal protective equipment such as masks and medical protective clothing. This is one of the major factors affecting the progress of epidemic prevention and control. Although China has made great efforts to strengthen the ability to quickly respond to public health emergencies since the SARS outbreak in 2003 and it has clarified requirements for emergency supplies through legislation, the emergency reserve supplies program has not been effectively implemented, and there are also deficiencies in the types, quantity, and availability of emergency medical supplies. A sound system of emergency reserve supplies is crucial to the management of public health emergencies. Based on international experiences with pandemic control, the world should emphasize improving the system of emergency reserve medical supplies in the process of establishing and improving public health emergency response systems, and it should promote the establishment of international cooperative programs to jointly deal with public health emergencies of international concern in the future.

DNA methylation is the covalent modification of methyl groups to DNA mostly at CpG dinucleotides and one of the most studied epigenetic mechanisms that leads to gene expression variability without affecting the DNA sequence. Genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation identified the signatures that could define subtypes of human lymphoma patients. The objective of this study was to conduct the genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation in dogs with gastrointestinal lymphoma (GIL). Genomic DNA was extracted from endoscopic biopsies from 10 dogs with GIL. We performed Digital Restriction Enzyme Assay of DNA Methylation (DREAM) for genome-wide DNA methylation analysis that could provide highly quantitative information on DNA methylation levels of CpG sites across the dog genome. We successfully obtained data of quantitative DNA methylation level for 148,601–162,364 CpG sites per GIL sample. Next, we analyzed 83,132 CpG sites to dissect the differences in DNA methylation between GIL and normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). We found 383–3,054 CpG sites that were hypermethylated in GIL cases compared to PBMCs. Interestingly, 773 CpG sites including promoter regions of 61 genes were identified to be commonly hypermethylated in more than half of the cases, suggesting conserved DNA methylation patterns that are abnormal in GIL. This study revealed that there was a large number of hypermethylated sites that are common in most of canine GIL. These abnormal DNA methylation could be involved in tumorigenesis of the canine GIL.

45歳の男性で,自ら肛門から大根を挿入したが抜けなくなり下血,下腹部痛出現したため救急搬送された.下腹部に限局した圧痛と筋性防御を認め,肛門からは動脈性の下血を認めた.腹部CTではRs直腸内に約74×58mmの異物を認めた.明らかな遊離ガスは認めなかった.全身麻酔下にて手術を行った.経肛門的に痔動静脈の損傷部位と直腸粘膜を修復した.腹腔鏡下にて腹腔内を観察すると,軽度濁った腹水を認めたが,明らかな穿孔部位は認めなかった.Rs直腸に異物を認めた.経肛門的に異物除去を試みるも困難であり,術者の左手を腹腔内に挿入して用手補助腹腔鏡下手術に移行し,用手的圧迫と経肛門的に異物を破砕しながら経肛門的に異物を除去した.経肛門的に摘出困難な直腸異物に対して,用手補助腹腔鏡下手術は腹腔内全体や腸管を観察することができ,用手的圧迫による異物誘導も可能であり,有用な治療のオプションになりえると考えられた.

南極観測が始まってから足掛け50年が経つためか,第45次観測隊では,NHKや新聞社が特派員を参加させ,衛星回線を使用した,これまでにない濃密な南極情報を伝えている.南極とお茶の間の距離が,著者が南氷洋の船上から無線写真電送を行ったころには想像もできなかった,「ついお隣」の時代になってきた.昔のことは忘れ去られるべきかもしれないが,著者の家内が,「寡婦になっては困る」から南極へ行くような人との結婚は諦めなさいと言われた程,辺境の地と思われていた南極圏から,新聞社が計画し,無線で写真を送ったその経緯をここに記録に残しておきたいと思う.

The original description of Pterygotrigla cajorarori Richards and Yato, 2012, based on eight specimens from the western Pacific Ocean, including one Japanese specimen, indicated hyperostosis in the rostral projection, head bones (infraorbital, frontal, and parietal), post temporal spine, humeral spine, and the 2nd–4th first dorsal-fin spines, although variations in these characters were poorly documented. Thirteen specimens (including two paratypes) of P. cajorarori collected from southern Japan, the South China Sea, and Indonesia were found to vary individually in the degree of hyperostosis in the rostral projection, mesethmoid, lateral ethmoid, frontal, sphenotic, pterotic, and infraorbital bones, whereas the condition was not prominent in the parietal and posttemporal bones, or the humeral spines. However, hyperostosis was newly found in the 5th and 6th dorsal-fin spines and pelvic-fin spine. A detailed description of fresh coloration (previously unknown) in P. cajorarori is also given.

隔離を含む非医学的(非薬物的)対策は病原体に非特異的なため、未だワクチンや治療法が開発されていない感染症など、幅広い対象に実施可能である。しかし、隔離による2次感染予防効果は具体的な数値として明らかにされておらず、例えば2014-16年に西アフリカで流行したエボラ出血熱に対して隔離が2次感染をどれだけ防ぎ得たかは未だ疫学的・統計学的に分析されていない。本研究の目的は、感染者の感染後経過時刻の関数として隔離実施を加味した2次感染発生の数理モデルを構築し、疫学情報およびゲノム情報の両方を含む観察データを分析することにより、隔離の効果を明示的に推定することである。3年度目は流行データを利用して感染性や相対的感染頻度を具体的に分析し、欠損情報を含むデータや様々な種類の観察情報からの推定を実現する段階に据えた。具体的には、伝播ネットワーク再構築および接触者追跡調査に基づく2次感染リスクのモデル化を行った。前者の分析では沖縄県を中心に発生した麻疹流行の伝播ネットワークの再構築のリアルタイム分析に取り組んだほか、同情報に基づくリアルタイム予測研究を発表することができた。後者の研究では、当初予定していた個体のtime useデータの活用に替えて接触ダイアリーに基づく接触者追跡調査を実施し、2次感染リスクが高くなる空間的設定(位置情報)を行動目的別で特定することに成功した。いずれの結果も原著論文として査読付きの国際誌に発表することができた。

The Japan machinery federation established the institute for interchanging studies on industrial microbe utilization as a part of its efforts for interchanging industrial studies among the three parties related to it i. e. the industrial world, the official world and the learned world, and was carrying on studying microbe utiligation for pulp and paper manufacturing processes hence. Recently, the institute made a summarized report on the results of this study. The present writer, who continued to participate in the process of this study as on observer, would like to outline this report for readers and add a few personal views of mine to it.The contents of this article may be summarized as follows.1. On utilization of microbes.2. On bio-pulping.3. On the possibility of utilization of microbes.1) Scheme of appilication of microbe utilization to pulp and paper manufacturing process in general.2) Their utilization for wood chip yard.3) Their utilization for deodorizing spent liquor.4) Possibility of applicating their utilization to methane fermentation.5) Their utilization for raising efficiency of removing COD.

Objective: We conducted a meta-analysis on the suppressive effect of resistant maltodextrin on post-prandial blood glucose elevation, which is approved in Japan as food for specified health use, and the following is allowed to be indicated on the label “it is suitable for consumption by those who are concerned about their post-prandial blood glucose levels because the absorption of sugars is abated by the action of dietary fiber (resistant maltodextrin).”Method: Our literature search covered Ichushi-Web (Japan Medical Abstracts Society), Japan Science and Technology Information Aggregator, Electronic (J-stage), Google Scholar, and PubMed databases and extracted English and Japanese publications on randomized, double-blind, controlled studies comparing resistant maltodextrin and a control in Japanese subjects for the reduction of areas under the blood glucose response curves at 30, 60, and 120 min after eating as an efficacy index.Result: Among these publications, four articles with a Jadad score (an assessment of the quality of randomized controlled studies) of ≥ 3 were included in the meta-analysis.  Significant inhibitory effects were confirmed from areas under the blood glucose response curves at 30, 60, and 120 min after eating in the meta-analysis that was performed to evaluate the effects of resistant maltodextrin on post-prandial blood glucose elevation in Japanese individuals.Conclusion: However, we were not able to test for publication bias because the number of extracted publications was small, and thus, additional research and case studies are warranted.
