Kikai caldera, a submarine caldera to the south of Kyushu, is the source of the youngest caldera-forming supereruption during the Holocene (i.e., the Kikai-Akahoya eruption at 7.3 ka). During its volcanic history, the Kikai caldera has experienced at least three caldera-forming supereruptions (i.e., the Kikai-Akahoya, Kikai-Tozurahara and Koabi eruptions). To better understand the processes of submarine caldera-forming supereruptions and the evolution of the large felsic magma bodies from which they derive, we have constructed a geochemical database for the eruption products of the Kikai Caldera, including proximal deposits and distal tephras (https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.20066630). We compiled geochemical data reported in various papers and proceedings from both domestic Japanese and international journals. The new database, comprising 413 individual samples from 59 publications, contains all available major- and trace-element concentrations, isotopic ratios, analytical methods, geographical coordinates (latitude, longitude, and altitude) of sampling points, age data, refractive index, and geological and petrological information. The database is freely available to the public online. Based on the constructed database, we review the current geochemical understanding of Kikai caldera magmatism and discuss geochemical characteristics of magmas from the Kikai caldera. The difference in magma composition between the two recent caldera-forming supereruptions (the Kikai-Akahoya eruption at 7.3 ka and the Kikai-Tozurahara eruption at 95 ka) is clearly seen in the compiled data. Moreover, we find that the distal tephra represents a more SiO2-rich magma composition than that of the proximal deposits, especially in the case of the Kikai-Akahoya eruption.

The source mantle of the ocean crust on the Pacific Plate is examined using Pb–Nd–Hf isotopes and compared to a global isotope database of ocean basalts. The entire eastern half of the Pacific Plate, formed from an isotopically distinct Pacific mantle along the East Pacific Rise and the Juan de Fuca Ridge, largely remains on the seafloor. Conversely, the western half of the Pacific Plate becomes younger westward and is thought to have formed from the Izanagi–Pacific Ridge (IPR). The ridge subducted along the Kurile–Japan–Nankai–Ryukyu (KJNR) Trench at 70-65 Ma and currently forms the leading edge of the Pacific Plate stagnated in the mantle transition zone beneath China. The subducted IP formed from both Pacific and Indian mantles. Isotopic compositions of the basalts from borehole cores of 165-130 Ma in the western Pacific show that these are of Pacific mantle origin. However, the scraped-off ocean floor basalts (80-70 Ma) in the accretionary prism along the KJNR Trench have Indian mantle signatures. This indicates: (1) the younger western Pacific Plate of IPR origin formed from the Indian mantle, (2) the Indian–Pacific mantle boundary has been stationary in the western Pacific at least since the Cretaceous, and (3) the IPR moved over the boundary. The Indian mantle is thought to have formed from a depleted MORB source mantle (DMM) due to an ancient melt depletion event (2-3 Ga) and subsequent isotopic growth and mixing with a sub-continental lithospheric mantle. In contrast, the Pacific mantle originated from a primitive mantle at 3-1.5 Ga followed by isotopic growth alone. These different formation processes may relate to the formation of the supercontinent and superocean where the Indian mantle was formed in a sub-continental environment whereas the Pacific mantle formed in an oceanic ridge environment.

Although titanium has been a popular metal in dentistry, it was not actively applied in the clinic. Some of the reason were most importantly a hardened layer formed on the casting surface with a reaction between mold material and molten titanium that had different physical and chemical properties than titanium. Moreover, fit of prostheses is lost due to the removal of the reacted layer. On the other hand, internal defects are often observed by X-ray photography of titanium castings. Bubble-like defects formed by gas inclusion will lead to worse durability.In order to obtain sound titanium castings, it is important to maintain surface transcription with high quality during the casting procedure and decrease casting error. A new investment may be a key to success. A development of titanium alloy seemed to be effective as prosthetic materials.

振子の等時性とその破れ,ホイヘンスによって考案されたサイクロイド振り子について解説する。サイクロイド振子の運動を解き,等時性が回復される振動解の具体的振る舞いを調べる。作成したサイクロイド振子による振動実験を行い,等時性が回復される様子を示す。また,自転車の車輪を使った実体振子の振動を測定し,大振幅の振動で周期が振幅に依存する様子を示す。

本研究の目的は、デカルト研究の世界的な仕事の一部を担い、その新しい質を提示するとともに、すべての哲学研究に新たな基礎を提供すべく、『省察』の「反論と答弁」について共同研究を行うことであった。このことを遂行するために、平成7年度から9年度までの三年間の研究の総纏めとして、今年度は、すべての個別研究を完成させるとともに、研究成果報告書を作成した。その概要は以下の通りである。1.「第一反論・答弁」および「第二反論・答弁」の校訂版を作成した。1641年の初版、AT版との異同を明らかにしながら1642年第二版を再現したものであり、世界的に見ても始めての試みである。これらは、TOKORO Takefumi, Les textes des 《Meditationes》, Chuo University Press, 1994に準拠している。2.『省察』「反論・答弁」をめぐる諸問題のテクスト的典拠を挙げ、諸家の伝統になっている、あるいはなりつつある解釈について論じる問題論的研究を完成させた。その目次的概要は次の通りである。(1)「順序・論証方式・叙述様式」(2)「デカルトの懐疑について」(3)「『省察』「反論・答弁」と「永遠真理創造」説」(4)「『省察』「反論と答弁」における「意志」を巡る議論」(5)「神に至るもう一つの道」(6)「デカルトにおける神学と哲学」(7)「反論と答弁」における「観念」について3.「第七反論・答弁」の翻訳を完成させた。これは本邦初訳である。夏の合宿への他領域の研究者、若手研究者の参加は、本研究の成果のいっそうの充実に寄与するところ大であった。

It is well known that 'Barbara of the House of Grebe' by Thomas Hardy furnished Tanizaki Jun'ichiro with some influence for writing Shunkinsho. In this essay, the conceivable effects, positive and negative, upon Shunkinsho by 'Barbara of the House of Grebe' are investigated. Hardy wrote in his diary that 'love lives on propinquity, but dies of contact.' In this vein, Shunkin and Sasuke seem to keep their love alive in a closed, mental world of their own. The two lovers establish 'propinquity' by means of the difference in social rank and physical blindness. In a seemingly peculiar relationship they hanker for an unchanging love yet avoid the permanence and stability of marriage. In 'Barbara of the House of Grebe' marriage causes emotional changes in Barbara towards Edmond Willowes, her first husband, and Lord Uplandtowers, her second husband. Barbara, by 'watching' Edmond's burnt face, changes her feelings towards him, causing her to shun him, 'averting her face,' 'shutting her eyes' and 'covering her eyes.' Hardy's literary device of Barbara's aversion of the gaze seems to be an influence on Tanizaki's motif of blindness in Shunkinsho. Sasuke becomes blind by his own hand, the reason for his act being to avoid watching Shunkin's scalded face and his changing feelings towards her. Unlike Barbara, Sasuke becomes able to preserve Shunkin's beauty in his own memory for eternity by his self-mutilation, just as the blind Shunkin holds his physical entity in her own mind through the senses of touch and hearing.

Electrical properties of metal-oxide-metal diode prepared by evaporation method are discussed with the theory by R. Stratton on tunneling currents through thin insulating films. Experimental results are successfully interpreted by the theory and the temperature dependency of tunneling current is found to agree in its general trend with the theory.
