Nagoya University Library (NUL) owns 2 full sets of Encyclopédie, which are classified as rare books. The publication of Paris edition began in 1751, followed by the supplements, plates and index. It was one of the bestsellers in Europe during the 18th century, and there are several editions in folio, quarto and octavo.
The Encyclopédie in folio held by NUL was not identified as the Paris edition, but as its counterfeit, the Geneva edition. We had not distinguished them until the 1950s, since we did not see any difference between the Paris and the Geneva edition. Besides, the existence of differences among Geneva editions made the situation more complicated. We found that the 2 Geneva editions of NUL were not very much the same as either the
'Berkeley Set' or the 'Riverside Set', and they were not exactly the same.
