A 53-year-old man was admitted for sub-acute progressive dementia and Gerstmann syndrome. MRI demonstrated lesions in the white matter involving the left parietal lobe, accompanied by speckled or faint linear peripheral enhancement. Brain biopsy revealed JC virus infection in oligodendrocytes and balanced infiltration of CD8+ and CD4+ T lymphocytes. We diagnosed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) with controlled inflammation. The finding of CD4/CD8 T cells in the infected PML brain suggested therapeutically valuable immune system involvement, which we decided to preserve by withholding corticosteroids. We treated the patient with risperidone, cytarabine and mefloquine to suppress virus replication, but not with the corticosteroid that is conventionally used in inflammatory PML cases. The patient was discharged three months after admission, and one year later, his score on the Mini-Mental State Examination had recovered to 26/30, from 5/30 on admission.

The rabies virus is one of the most neurotropic of all viruses infecting mammals. During the terminal phases of infection, the virus spreads to peripheral tissues, including the skin. The external skin of the nose, called the nasal planum, is a sensory organ where numerous nerve bundles and terminal nerves are distributed. Therefore, the nasal planum is expected to serve as a postmortem diagnostic material. However, the distribution of rabies virus antigens in the nasal planum in rabid animals has not yet been studied. In this study, the nasal planum was obtained from 45 rabid dogs. In all rabid dogs, the viral antigen was detected in the peripheral nerve tissues, Merkel cells, and squamous cells. The viral antigen in the epidermis exhibited three patterns: first, a diffuse positive pattern from the basal layer to the squamous layer; second, a reticular positive pattern along the cell membrane in the squamous layer; and third, a basal layer pattern of the epidermis. In the dermis, viral antigens were detected more often in lamellated corpuscles just beneath the rete pegs. These results suggest that the nasal planum could serve as a useful alternative source for postmortem diagnosis in rabies endemic countries.

The aim of this study is to get information of gas geochemical characteristics at hydrothermal vent sites in the adjacent region of Tokara Islands by using helium isotopes and methane concentration and its stable carbon isotope ratio to estimate the 3He flux and understand the mechanism of carbon cycling.

A nighttime nap is expected to mitigate melatonin suppression during night work by blocking light input to the retina, but it is unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of a nap break on melatonin level, subjective sleepiness, and vigilance performance during simulated night work. Eleven healthy young males (mean ± SD age: 22.2 ± 4.1 years) participated in counterbalanced crossover design experiments with two conditions (nap vs. no nap). The subjects performed 12-hour simulated night work from 21:00 to 09:00 h (illuminance: ~500 lx). Subjects with a nap condition took a nap for 2 hours in a dark room from 03:00, while subjects with a no nap condition continued the simulated night work. The results showed that immediately after the 2-h nap break, the melatonin level at 05:00 h temporarily recovered from light-induced melatonin suppression during the simulated night work but significantly suppressed again at 07:00 and 09:00 h. Subjective alertness and vigilance performance were impaired immediately after the nap break but subsequently enhanced. The results suggest that a single nap break for 2 hours could be a strategy to enhance alertness during the last part of night shift but inadequate for mitigating melatonin suppression.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) is a common complication in dogs. Since nitric oxide (NO) is known to relax the lymphatic duct, we evaluated inducible NO synthase (iNOS) expression using immunohistochemistry in 13 dogs with lymphoplasmacytic enteritis (LPE) with or without IL. The duodenal iNOS expressing cells were significantly increased in dogs with IL-negative or IL-positive LPE dogs (P=0.025, P=0.007) compared with control dogs. However, there was no significant difference in iNOS expression between IL-positive and IL-negative tissues. Based on these results, there is no clear evidence for the NO overproduction in the pathogenesis of IL in dogs with LPE. Factors other than NO could, thus, contribute to IL in dogs with LPE.

Objective: The aim of this study was to validate the usefulness of the measurement of lung insufflation capacity (LIC) using the LIC TRAINER (LT) in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in the rehabilitation departments of the Japanese National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry and involved 20 ALS patients who underwent respiratory therapy between April 1, 2014, and December 2017. The vital capacity (VC), maximum insufflation capacity (MIC), and LIC measurements at the start of respiratory therapy were extracted from the medical records, and patients were divided into three groups: group A, VC could not be measured; group B, VC could be measured, but MIC was less than VC; and group C, MIC was larger than VC. LIC could be measured in all groups. In group C, paired t-tests were used to analyze whether there was a significant difference in the volumes measured using different methods. Results: LIC was 950, 1863±595, and 2980±1176 ml in groups A (n=1), B (n=10), and C (n=9), respectively. In groups A and B, LIC could be measured in all patients, even when VC or MIC could not be measured. In group C, the measured LIC value was significantly greater than MIC (p=0.003). Conclusion: LIC could be successfully measured using the LT. By using the LT, it was feasible to conveniently perform LIC measurements, suggesting that it could be a useful device for performing respiratory therapy in ALS patients.

本論文は,2006年3月,学術振興会外国人招へい研究者として来日され,3月8日,文学部教育学専攻と三田哲学会の共催のもと三田で行われたハンス-リューディガー・ミュラ_(Hans-Rudiger Muller)教授の講演原稿(Kunstliche Natur. Bildungsanthropologische Aspekte bei Schiller und Plessner)を訳出したものである.ミュラー教授は1952年ドイッに生まれ,ゲッティンゲン大学のクラウス・モレンハウアー教授の下でPh.D.(1990年)および教授資格(1996年)を取得,現在はオスナブリュック大学教育文化科学部の教授である.専門は,18,19世紀の教育思想,人間形成論(ヘルダー研究を中心に)や自伝研究に基づく教育史研究だが,最近では,とくに自伝を資料としながら家族における文化伝達の問題に取り組んでいる.しかし,その関心の中心は,あくまでも広い意味での美的実践と人間形成の関係に関する理論的考察であり,身体や感覚現象と自己の関係に関する文化分析である.本論文では,18世紀後半の美的人間形成論の鳴矢となったシラー『人間の美的教育について』と,20世紀のはじめに独特な感性論・身体論をもとに哲学的人間学を展開したプレスナーの人間形成論が比較されている.自然(身体)と理性のあいだに開いた近代的分裂を和解する可能性を「美的なもの」にみるシラーと,このような理想なきあと,たえず「脱中心化」を繰り返していくところに人間の本性と可能性をみるプレスナーのあいだに,近代における美的(感性的)人間形成論の連続性と非連続性をみようとしたのがこの論文である.最後に,ミュラー教授の代表的著作(編著,共著を含む)を挙げておこう.Klaus Mollenhauer (unter Mitarbeit von Cornelie Dietrich, Hans-Rudiger Muller und Michael Parmentier), Grund-fragen asthetischer Bildung. Background: Breakfast is deemed the most important meal of the day. We examined the prospective associations of breakfast habits with emotional/behavioral problems in adolescents and potential effect modification.Methods: 115,217 Primary 6 students (United States Grade 6; mean age, 11.9; standard deviation [SD], 0.59 years) who attended the Student Health Service of Department of Health in Hong Kong in 2004/05, 2006/07, 2008/09 were followed till Secondary 6 (United States Grade 12). Emotional/behavioral problems were biennially examined using Youth Self-Report since Secondary 2 (United States Grade 8). Lifestyles were biennially examined using standardized questionnaires since Primary 6. Prospective associations of breakfast habit with emotional/behavioral problems and potential effect modification were examined using generalized estimating equations.Results: Compared with eating breakfast at home, eating breakfast away from home was significantly associated with total emotional/behavioral problems and seven syndromes, including withdrawal, somatic complaints, anxiety/depression, thought problems, attention problems, delinquent behaviors, and aggressive behaviors (adjusted odds ratios [AORs] 1.22–2.04), while skipping breakfast showed stronger associations with the above problems and social problems (AORs 1.34–2.29). Stronger associations were observed in younger students for total and attention problems (P < 0.03) and in those with lower weight status for delinquent behaviors (P = 0.005).Conclusions: Eating breakfast away from home and especially skipping breakfast were prospectively associated with adolescent emotional/behavioral problems. The associations weakened with increasing age for total emotional/behavioral and attention problems, and weakened with higher weight status for delinquent behaviors, highlighting the vulnerability of younger and underweight children. If the associations are causal, increasing home breakfast may reduce adolescent emotional/behavioral problems and benefit psychosocial health.

Taiwan is located in the subtropical zone, and the typical weather is hot and humid which benefit the growth of fungi. Mycotoxins are the toxic metabolites produced by some species of fungi genera such as Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium. Surveys of mycotoxins in market foods have been implemented by Bureau of Food and Drug Analysis (BFDA) in Taiwan for several years. The results were used as database to establish related regulations by Department of Health (DOH) and provided for local health authorities to prevent unsafe food products from being consumed. Aflatoxin, ochratoxin A, fumonisin, deoxynivalenol (DON), patulin and T-2 toxin were tested and surveyed in various kinds of foods during the past ten years. From 1997 to 2006, a total of 1, 056 peanut product samples were tested and 339 samples (32.1%) contained aflatoxins. Among them, 65 samples which contained aflatoxins above 15μg/kg exceeded action levels of Taiwan. According to the results of the surveys in 2005 and 2006, most of violative products were imported from a foreign country. In 2002, aflatoxin M<SUB>1</SUB> was tested in 113 dairy products including fresh milk, milk powder, infant formula and drinking yogurt. Most of them contained a trace of aflatoxin M<SUB>1</SUB>, but none exceeded action levels of Taiwan. In 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006, 441 samples were collected and examined for ochratoxin A, and 68 samples (15.4%) contained less than 5μg/kg, including grain products, wine, coffee products and so on. In 2002, 76 corn products were tested and 11 samples (14.5%) contained fumonisins (B<SUB>1</SUB>+B<SUB>2</SUB>) ranging from 0.05 to 0.16mg/kg. The survey of DON in rice, flour, noodle, corn, oat and other products was implemented in 2004. One hundred and fifty samples were tested and the results showed that 3 samples contained DON ranging from 0.11 to 0.45mg/kg. In 1999 and 2005, 122 commodities including baby juice, juice drink, pure apple juice, mixed juice and apple paste were collected and tested for patulin. The results showed that 13 apple juices contained patulin ranging from 8.6 to 39.9μg/kg. In the survey of T-2 toxin in 2005, 31 food products were tested and 4 samples (12.9%) contained T-2 toxin ranging from 0.7 to 8.9μg/kg. The results showed that the violative rate of aflatoxins in imported peanut products grew in recent years. Other mycotoxins including ochratoxin A, fumonisins, DON, patulin and T-2 toxin were detected in some food commodities, but the contamination levels were pretty low.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of continuous administration of linoleic acid or linolenic acid into the intra-uterine horn, ipsilateral to the corpus luteum, on the duration of the estrous cycle and plasma progesterone (P4) concentration. The effects of linoleic and linolenic acids on bovine uterine and luteal functions were also studied using a tissue culture system. Intra-uterine administration of linoleic or linolenic acid (5 mg/10 ml of each per day) in cows, between days 12 and 21, resulted in a prolonged estrous cycle compared to the average duration of the last one to three estrous cycles before administration in each group (P < 0.05). Moreover, plasma P4 concentration in cows treated with linoleic or linolenic acid was high between days 19 and 21 (linoleic acid), or on day 20 (linolenic acid), compared to that of the control cows (saline administration; P < 0.05 or lower). Both linoleic (500 µg/ml) and linolenic (5 and 500 µg/ml) acids stimulated prostaglandin (PG) E2 but inhibited PGF2α production by cultured endometrial tissue (P < 0.01), while P4 production by cultured luteal tissue was not affected. These findings suggest that both linoleic and linolenic acids support luteal P4 production by regulating endometrial PG production and, subsequently, prolonging the duration of the estrous cycle in cows.

Reducing the use of broad-spectrum insecticides is one of the many challenges currently faced by insect pest management practitioners. For this reason, efforts are being made to develop environmentally benign pest-control products through bio-rational approaches that aim at disrupting physiological processes unique to specific groups of pests. Perturbation of hormonal regulation of insect development and reproduction is one such strategy. It has long been hypothesized that some enzymes in the juvenile hormone biosynthetic pathway of moths, butterflies and caterpillars (order Lepidoptera) display unique structural features that could be targeted for the development of Lepidoptera-specific insecticides, a promising avenue given the numerous agricultural and forest pests belonging to this order. Farnesyl diphosphate synthase, FPPS, is one such enzyme, with recent work suggesting that it has structural characteristics that may enable its selective inhibition. This review synthesizes current knowledge on FPPS and summarizes recent advances in its use as a target for insecticide development.

As the limits of its contradictions,brought the crisis of global environmental crisis and human nature. On the criticism of theontological structure of these two crises, we must envision our new society.
