Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), a relatively rare brain tumor, bears a dire prognosis. On occasion, the rapid progression of the tumor makes immediate diagnosis and initiation of therapy imperative. To achieve swift diagnosis, we adopt flow cytometry (FCM) in addition to conventional histopathology. This study aimed to reveal the utility of FCM diagnosis for PCNSL and the cause of false-negative results of FCM diagnosis. We investigated 33 patients with suspected PCNSL on neuroradiological findings and received both FCM and histological diagnosis. The patients' electronic medical records were investigated, and histological findings, results of FCM, and other clinical data were evaluated. Overall, 27 patients (14 males and 13 females) were diagnosed with PCNSL by histological confirmation. The median age at diagnosis was 68 years. FCM analysis showed lymphoma pattern in 24 cases; however, FCM results did not show lymphoma pattern (sensitivity: 88.9%, specificity: 100%) in the other three lymphoma cases (FCM discordant: FCM-D) and six nonlymphomatous tumor cases. Analysis of FCM-D cases showed the infiltration of T lymphocytes or astrocytes into the tumor tissue, indicating tumor microenvironmental reaction; it is assumed that these reactions deceived FCM diagnosis. The survival of FCM-D patients was superior to FCM concordant counterpart, although the difference was not significant (p = 0.459). The diagnosis of PCNSL by FCM is rapid and highly reliable. Some FCM-D cases are PCNSLs with strong tumor microenvironmental reactions.

Although chemotherapy using CHOP-based protocol induces remission in most cases of canine multicentric high-grade B-cell lymphoma (mhBCL), some cases develop early relapse during the first induction protocol. In this study, we examined the gene expression profiles of canine mhBCL before chemotherapy and investigated their associations with early relapse during the first whole CHOP-based protocol. Twenty-five cases of mhBCL treated with CHOP-based protocol as first induction chemotherapy were included in this study. Sixteen cases completed the first whole CHOP-based protocol without relapse (S-group), and nine developed relapse during the chemotherapy (R-group). RNA-seq was performed on samples from neoplastic lymph nodes. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were extracted by the comparison of gene expression profiles between S- and R-groups, and the differences in the expression levels of these genes were validated by RT-qPCR. Extracted 179 DEGs included the genes related to chemokine CC motif ligand, T-cell receptor signaling pathway, and PD-L1 expression and PD-1 checkpoint pathway. We focused on chemokine CC motif ligand, and CCL4 was confirmed to be significantly downregulated in the R-group (P=0.039). We also focused on the genes related to T-cell signaling pathway, and CD3E (P=0.039), ITK (P=0.023), and LAT (P=0.023) genes were confirmed to be significantly upregulated in the R-group. The current results suggest that both changes in tumor cells and the interactions between tumor cells and immune cells are associated with the efficacy of the chemotherapy for first remission induction.

Numerous studies have shown that human dentition traits vary both between and within populations. However, there is still little knowledge about how dental tissue proportions differ between modern human groups. In this study, two samples of European and African individuals were compared to assess the possible differences and similarities present in the dental tissue dimensions of their permanent canines. For this purpose, the volumes and surface areas of the coronal dentine and pulp complex and the enamel cap of 127 canines were measured by microcomputed tomography. The results show the existence of interpopulation variability in the dental tissue pattern of both samples, which is mainly due to the presence of a larger enamel component in the African population, while dentine seems to play a less critical role in the differences described between both dental samples. We also observed a similar pattern of sexual dimorphism in the dental tissue proportions of European and African canines, but in this case, the intrapopulation variability was mainly due to the presence of a greater dentine component in males. Therefore, because the dimensions of dental tissues vary at both inter- and intrapopulation levels in modern human groups, our results highlight the importance of selecting comparative samples that are geographically mixed and sex-balanced for future paleoanthropological investigations on dental tissue patterns of extinct and extant species to avoid overestimating or underestimating any possible similarities or differences.

A multifunctional radar (MFR) with varying pulse sequences can change its signal characteristics and/or pattern, based on the presence of targets and to avoid being jammed. To take a countermeasure against an MFR, it is crucial for an electronic warfare (EW) system to be able to identify and separate a MFR's modes via analyzing intercepted radar signals, without a priori knowledge. In this article, two correlation-based methods, one taking the signal's order into account and another one ignoring the signal's order, are proposed and investigated for this task. The results demonstrate their great potential.

This study aimed to increase resistant starch (RS) content in cooked KDML 105 rice. Various factors were investigated, such as rice type, cultivation area, oil type, rice cooker, and Thai herbs. This study found that the choice of oil and the incorporation of specific Thai herbs had a significant impact on the RS content of cooked KDML 105 rice. Using extra virgin coconut oil increased RS content, while certain Thai herbs, particularly Pandan leaves juice and butterfly pea flower, contributed to both increased RS content. Sao Hai rice had the highest RS content (4.31 ± 0.30 %). Saline soil areas did not significantly affect RS content in KDML 105 rice. Using extra virgin coconut oil and pressure rice cookers increased RS content significantly (1.40 ± 0.23 %). Incorporating four Thai herbs improved RS content. Notably, soaking rice in 2 % citric acid, mixing with extra virgin coconut oil, Thai herb and pressure cooking significantly increased RS content.

Senescent cells play a detrimental role in age-associated pathogenesis by producing factors involved in senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). The present study was conducted to examine the possibility that senescent cells are present in aged ovaries and, if so, to determine the tissue region where senescent cells accumulate using a mouse model. Female mice at 2–4 and 8–10 months were used as reproductively young and aged models, respectively; the latter included mice with and without reproductive experience. Cells positive for senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) staining, one of the markers of cellular senescence, were detected in the stromal region of aged, but not young, ovaries regardless of reproductive experience. Likewise, the localization of cells expressing CDKN2A (cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 2A), another senescence marker, in the stromal region of aged ovaries was detected with immunohistochemistry. CDKN2A expression detected by western blotting was significantly higher in the ovaries of aged mice with reproductive experience than in those without the experience. Moreover, cells positive for both γH2AX (a senescence marker) and fluorescent SA-β-Gal staining were present in those isolated from aged ovaries. In addition, the transcript levels of several SASP factors were significantly increased in aged ovaries. These results suggest that senescent cells accumulate in the ovarian stroma and may affect ovarian function in aged mice. Additionally, reproductive experience may promote accumulation.

Owing to recent advances in medical optical technology, a high-definition (4K) three-dimensional (3D) exoscope has been developed as an alternative tool to using conventional microscopes for microscopic surgery, and its efficacy for neurosurgery has been reported. We report a case who underwent simultaneous surgery aiming for en bloc resection of an anterior skull base malignancy with concurrent exoscopic transcranial and endoscopic endonasal approaches using a 4K 3D exoscope. The patient was a 76-year-old woman who underwent en bloc resection for an anterior skull base olfactory neuroblastoma 13 years ago. After confirming the recurrence of progressive olfactory neuroblastoma, tumor resection was again decided to be performed. As with the first procedure, surgery was performed in an en bloc manner, using both transcranial and endonasal approaches. Exoscope provided enough space above the surgical field to allow us to perform transcranial and endonasal surgeries simultaneously. Moreover, the surgeons could maintain a comfortable posture throughout the procedure, and total tumor removal was successfully achieved without any abnormal event. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the introduction of an exoscope aiming for en bloc resection of an anterior skull base malignancy while performing simultaneous surgery with both transcranial and endonasal approaches. We believe that the more cases are accumulated, the more efficacy of a 4K 3D exoscope will be elucidated.

The perovskite-type proton conductor with the composition of BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3−δ (BZCYYb) has been reported to exhibit the highest proton conductivity among proton conductors. However, cerate-based perovskite materials such as BZCYYb are also known to react with carbon dioxide which causes phase decomposition through the formation of barium carbonate. This is a significant issue because chemical stability is an important property to enable these materials to be utilized for fuel cell applications. In this study, the chemical stability of BZCYYb was investigated in CO2 or CO2 + H2 atmosphere, with or without nickel addition as sintering aid. Some nickel addition is assumed to occur from nickel diffusion in anode-support-type fuel cells. The enhancement of reactivity with carbon dioxide species by adding nickel into BZCYYb was attributed to barium enrichment at grain boundary regions and the formation of an impurity phase of Ba(Y(1−x)Ybx)2NiO5. Moreover, different decomposition reactions depending on the atmosphere have been inferred. In a pure CO2 atmosphere, barium carbonate formation occurred without appearance of the CeO2-based phase, in other words, without decomposition of the perovskite phase. On the other hand, in hydrogen-containing CO2 atmosphere, both the barium carbonate and CeO2-based phase were observed.

海洋の酸性化は海洋生態系に大きな影響を与えるといわれており、近年盛んに研究されているテーマである。過去の大量絶滅事変は、海洋酸性化等の環境変動とそれが生態系に与えた影響を直接観察できる絶好の研究材料である。本研究では、特に良好に保存された化石試料を採取・分析することによって白亜紀末の大量絶滅事変における海洋酸性化を復元し、それが当時大繁栄していたアンモナイトの絶滅とどのように関連していたのか、について検証を行う。

国立天文台は2019年に,市民がインターネットを通じて「すばる望遠鏡」のビッグデータにアクセスし,銀河研究に協力する「GALAXY CRUISE」プロジェクトを始動した。天文学分野において,ウェブ上で既存の観測データを分類するシチズンサイエンスは国内初といえる。本プロジェクトは,日本語で参加できるだけでなく,先行する海外でのプロジェクトにない独自の特徴を持つ。例えば,丁寧なトレーニングメニュー,クルーズ船に乗って宇宙を航海する世界観やゲーム性等を導入した。本稿ではGALAXY CRUISEの進捗状況とともに,アンケート結果から見えてきた参加者のモチベーションと属性の時間変化を紹介する。

In this work two novel cationic lipids using natural tartaric acid as linking backbone were synthesized. These cationic lipids were simply constructed by tartaric acid backbone using head group 6-aminocaproic acid and saturated hydrocarbon chains dodecanol (T-C12-AH) or hexadecanol (T-C16-AH). The physicochemical properties, gel electrophoresis, transfection activities, and cytotoxicity of cationic liposomes were tested. The optimum formulation for T-C12-AH and T-C16-AH was at cationic lipid/dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) molar ratio of 1 : 0.5 and 1 : 2, respectively, and N/P charge molar ratio of 1 : 1 and 1 : 1, respectively. Under optimized conditions, T-C12-AH and T-C16-AH showed effective gene transfection capabilities, superior or comparable to that of commercially available transfecting reagent 3β-[N-(N′,N′-dimethylaminoethyl)carbamoyl]cholesterol (DC-Chol) and N-[2,3-dioleoyloxypropyl]-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (DOTAP). The results demonstrated that the two novel tartaric acid-based cationic lipids exhibited low toxicity and efficient transfection performance, offering an excellent prospect as nonviral vectors for gene delivery.

The upgrade of JT-60U to the superconducting tokamak “JT-60SA” has been carried out as a combined project of JAEA's program for national use and the Satellite Tokamak Program in collaboration with EU and Japan fusion communities. The JT-60U torus was dismantled so as to install the new JT-60SA torus at the same position in the torus hall. JT-60U used deuterium for 18 years, so the neutron yield reached about 1.5×1020 (n) in total. The dismantling project of JT-60U was the first decommissioning experience of a fusion device with radioactivity in Japan. The project was intended to demonstrate decommissioning technologies and work activities, and to acquire experience and data on the technologies as well as to implement the dismantling project safely. Moreover, all disassembled components were stored with the data such as dose rate, weight and kind of material being recorded, so as to apply the clearance level regulation in the future. The lessons learned from the dismantling project indicated that the cutting technologies and storage management of disassembled components were the key factors in conducting the dismantling project efficiently. After completing the dismantling project, efforts have been made to analyze the data for characterizing disassembling activities, so as to contribute to the estimation of manpower needs and the radioactivity of the disassembled components from other fusion devices.

Based on previous studies, we found that Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccination may play a role in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate this protective effect. We searched the Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, BioRxiv, and MedRxiv databases for studies that evaluated the relationship between BCG vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 disease. The quality of all included studies was assessed using the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality data tools. Review Manager (Version 5.3) was used to conduct all the data analyses. A total of eight studies were ultimately included in our meta-analysis. Our primary analysis found a significantly lower SARS-CoV-2 infection rate in the BCG vaccination group compared to the control group, with an odds ratio of 0.61, (95% confidence interval 0.39 to 0.95, P = 0.03; I2 = 31%, and P = 0.21, respectively). Our study indicates that BCG vaccination can protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, there is insufficient evidence that BCG vaccination can reduce the severity of COVID-19.

Abstract: Various neuropathies of the cranil nerves can accompany trigeminal neuropathic pain attributed to space-occupying lesions. In this case report, the patient presented with persistent intraoral pain and numbness on the right side of the face. Cranial nerve examination revealed dysfunctional eye movements, diplopia, and mechanical hyposensitivity in the mandibular region. The patient was diagnosed with neuropathy due to intracranial lesions and referred to the Department of Neurosurgery and Otorhinolaryngology. The patient was suspected of having malignant lymphoma and is currently undergoing neurosurgical intervention. This article discusses the importance of the examination of the cranial nerve for patients with persistent pain in the trigeminal nerve distribution.

Aim: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an underdiagnosed autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by high levels of plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from birth. This study aimed to assess the genetic identification of FH in children with high LDL-C levels who are identified in a universal pediatric FH screening in Kagawa, Japan.Method: In 2018 and 2019, 15,665 children aged 9 or 10 years underwent the universal lipid screening as part of the annual health checkups for the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases in the Kagawa prefecture. After excluding secondary hyper-LDL cholesterolemia at the local medical institutions, 67 children with LDL-C levels of ≥ 140 mg/dL underwent genetic testing to detect FH causative mutations at four designated hospitals.Results: The LDL-C levels of 140 and 180 mg/dL in 15,665 children corresponded to the 96.3 and 99.7 percentile values, respectively. Among 67 children who underwent genetic testing, 41 had FH causative mutations (36 in the LDL-receptor, 4 in proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9, and 1 in apolipoprotein B). The area under the curve of receiver operating characteristic curve predicting the presence of FH causative mutation by LDL-C level was 0.705, and FH causative mutations were found in all children with LDL-C levels of ≥ 250 mg/dL.Conclusion: FH causative mutations were confirmed in almost 60% of the referred children, who were identified through the combination of the lipid universal screening as a part of the health checkup system and the exclusion of secondary hyper-LDL cholesterolemia at the local medical institutions.

Performing the minimum number of ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography imprints is important for ensuring high throughput and low costs. The stamp lifetime can be estimated quickly from little information during imprint processing. We proposed two methods to predict the stamp lifetime from durability test data with a line-patterned mold. We characterized the contact angle, concentration of release resin, and the number of imprints from the data. Both of the proposed methods used machine learning. One method was binary classification, and the other was regression analysis. Under the binary classification method, the recall was 50% and the prediction showed that the recall becomes 0% when Gaussian random noise is added. Under the regression analysis, the prediction did not drastically change, with an approximately 100-fold increase in the mean absolute error. The results show that regression analysis is useful for predicting the lifetime of a line-patterned mold.

From Japan, 11 species of freshwater Nematomorpha have been described to date, but there are very few photographic documentations of any of them. This investigation describes specimens from the Lake Biwa Museum (Shiga Prefecture, Japan) and supplies the first SEM pictures and additional data for the species Chordodes fukuii Inoue, 1951, Japanese specimens of C. japonensis Inoue, 1952, and Paragordionus kawamurai Yamaguti, 1943. Two specimens likely belong to the genus Gordionus, which has not been reported from Japan before, but they could not be determined to the species level. Several specimens belonging to the genus Gordius could not be assigned to a certain species. This is due to general problems with the status of several Gordius species arising from the scarcity of taxonomically relevant characters.

To clarify the mechanism by which curdlan sulfate (CRDS) inhibits human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection, we examined its influence on the binding of gp120 to CD4 molecules on T cells and macrophages, as well as on the production of TNF-α by gp120-stimulated macrophages (which promotes HIV-1 replication). CRDS treatment of cells not only inhibited the binding of HIV-1 gp120 to CD4+ cells, but also inhibited TNF-α production induced by gp120. Inhibition of HIV-1 infection by CRDS may be related to these two actions.

Background: Dementia is one of the most common diseases in the elderly. Japan has the highest life expectancy in the world, which means that serious health problems such as dementia are prevalent among a large segment of the Japanese population. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between lifestyle habits and dementia among community dwelling older adults by conducting a cohort study. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study conducted over 6 years. The study was carried out in a farming community near a major urban center in Japan. Results: The participants consisted of 525 elderly adults aged 65 years or older. Multiple logistic regression analysis after adjustment for sex and age indicated that the diagnosis of dementia was 4.0 times higher among participants who did not take breakfast (p<0.01, CI=1.3-11.8), 2.7 times higher among participants who did snack (p<0.05, CI=1.1-6.5), 2.5 times higher among participants who did not care for salt consumption (p<0.05, CI=1.1-5.8), and 2.7 times higher among participants who did not care for nutrient balance (p<0.05, CI=1.2-6.2). Conclusion: According to our results, several lifestyle habits were associated with dementia. Appropriate interventions are required for high-risk individuals, including those with mild cognitive impairment. Evaluation and counseling by the physician is likely to strongly influence patient and caregiver awareness of dementia and hopefully slow disease progression. We suggest that public nurses may have the capacity to assess community dwelling elderly individuals in this manner in the Japanese health system.
