A total of 18 rainfed upland New Rice for Africa (NERICA) varieties were categorized as the heavy panicle and low tillering types and early heading, in compared with 32 different varieties. These chromosome components were clarified using 243 SSR markers which showed polymorphism among NERICA varieties and their parents, CG 14 (O. glaberrima Steud.) and one of the recurrent parents, WAB-56-104 (O. sativa L.). NERICA varieties were classified into three groups, which corresponded with these parents’ continuation including two exceptions, NERICAs 14 and 17, by a cluster analysis using polymorphism data of SSR markers and 14 differential markers among them were selected to classify NERICA varieties. However, three groups: NERICAs, 3 and 4, NERICAs, 8, 9 and 11 and NERICAs, 15 and 16 were not distinguishable. Association analysis was carried out for characterization of NERICA varieties by using SSR markers genotype and phenotype of agronomic traits. A total of 131 quantitative trait loci between SSR markers and 11 agronomic traits were detected. The characteristics of early maturity and heavy panicle of upland NERICA varieties were succeeded from Asian rice varieties and the characteristics of high dry matter production and late heading were introduced from CG 14 and the other varieties.

The transverse acoustic excitation modes were detected by inelastic x-ray scattering in liquid Ga in the Q range above 9  nm-1 although liquid Ga is mostly described by a hard-sphere liquid. An ab initio molecular dynamics simulation clearly supports this finding. From the detailed analysis for the S(Q, ω) spectra with a good statistic quality, the lifetime of 0.5 ps and the propagating length of 0.4–0.5 nm can be estimated for the transverse acoustic phonon modes, which may correspond to the lifetime and size of cages formed instantaneously in liquid Ga.

Trehalose has several novel anti-inflammatory and cell-protective functions. We hypothesized that lyophilized aspirin/trehalose could decrease the severity of aspirin-induced gastropathy. Thirteen dogs were assigned into aspirin, lyophilized aspirin/trehalose, and control groups, and the gastric lesions were assessed on gastroscopy with the modified Lanza scale. Another 6 dogs were used to measure the plasma aspirin concentration by high-performance liquid chromatography after aspirin or lyophilized aspirin/trehalose administration. The results indicated that lyophilized aspirin/trehalose induced less gastric ulceration than aspirin despite maintaining therapeutic concentrations of plasma aspirin in both the groups. Lyophilized aspirin/trehalose might be a solution to decrease aspirin-induced gastropathy.

双線形写像を利用するペアリング暗号は、ユビキタスネットワークに適した新しい暗号プロトコルを実現できるため、近年注目されている。しかしながら RSA 暗号のような普及している公開鍵暗号より、演算時間が数倍必要であることが欠点であった。我々はペアリング暗号を高速に計算するため、ペアリングアルゴリズムの軽量化、FPGA 実装を経て、世界初となるペアリング演算 ASIC、"Pairing Lite" を開発し動作確認を行った。Pairing Lite のゲート数は約 200 000、動作周波数は 200MHz で、1 回のペアリング演算を 46.7μ 秒で行うことを確認した。Pairing cryptosystems that utilize a bilinear map have attracted much attention because they can create new cryptographic protocols suitable for ubiquitous networks. However, their calculation time is several times longer than that for RSAs. We have developed an ASIC for calculating a pairing, "Pairing Lite," that is the world's first ASIC implementation of the pairing through improving algorithms for calculating the pairing and implementing FPGA. The scale of the circuit for Pairing Lite is about 200,000 gates, its operating frequency is 200 MHz, and it takes only 46.7μseconds to calculate one pairing.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of and differences in certain health complaints, including physical symptoms and psychological distress, among workers in different occupational categories and to explore the associations between occupational category and each complaint. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 1,628 workers representing seven occupational categories from ten companies in different industries submitted completed questionnaires. The self-administered questionnaire contained three parts: personal data, physical symptoms and psychological distress. Physical symptoms were measured using nine questions developed by a panel of ten general practitioners; the questions included nine common physical symptoms across main organ systems. Psychological distress was measured using the Chinese Health Questionnaire. Results: Muscle pain (44.7%) and dizziness (30.1%) were the most common symptoms reported by participants, and 16.6% of participants suffered from psychological distress. Significant differences in physical symptoms and psychological distress were found among workers in different occupational categories (χ2=53.59, pConclusions: The study merits attention in terms of prevention of health problems in the workplace by focusing on a set of physical symptoms and psychological distress (not merely morbidity). Occupational category should be taken into consideration when planning workplace health promotion. Our findings highlight the need for health promotion programs that specifically target office workers and managers.

From the 1970s to 2000, the occupational accident rate in Korea showed a continuous decline. However, the rate has remained stagnant since 2000 even when the fatal injury rate has decreased 40% from that year. Injuries caused by being caught in objects have decreased while those caused by slips and falls on same level and falls from the height have increased. In 2010, the non-fatal injury rate per 100 employees was 0.63 while the fatal injury rate per 100,000 employees was 9.74. The construction industry accounted for 40.2% of all fatal injuries, and falls from the height caused 54.3% of the fatality. Musculoskeletal diseases accounted for 78.8% of the non-fatal occupational diseases while cardio-cerebrovascular diseases and pneumoconiosis are the two major fatal occupational diseases. Occupational diseases caused by chemical agents have decreased to 0.6% of all cases. However, there were several social disputes related to occupational diseases caused by low level of chemicals such as leukemia in a semiconductor company. Korea planned to reduce the fatal injury rate and total workday loss by 30% by 2015. In order to achieve this goal, the government will focus on vulnerable groups in collaboration with allies such as professional associations or organizations.

Graphene is ideally suited to electrochemistry by virtue of its high surface area and impressive electronic properties. Nitrogen incorporation can be used to tailor the properties of graphene. Here we present a simple solvothermal technique to produce a nitrogen-containing foam-like macroporous graphene powder doped with up to 15 wt% nitrogen. This is applied as an effective non-precious, metal-free electrochemical catalyst for oxygen reduction in acid media. [DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2012.29]

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma was found in a five-month-old male Irish setter dog. At necropsy, the largest mass, measuring 15 × 13 × 13 cm, was found in the right caudal lobe of the lung, and metastatic small masses were observed in multiple organs. Microscopically, the tumor comprised mainly atypical mesenchymal cells and myxoid stroma, which stained positively with Alcian blue. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells stained positively for vimentin, S-100 protein, neuron-specific enolase, calretinin, and chromogranin A. Ultrastructurally, the cytoplasm of the tumor cells was comprised abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, Golgi complex, free ribosomes and short irregular microvillous processes extending from the cytoplasm. Based on these pathological findings, this tumor was diagnosed as extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma.

We focused on brain areas activated by audiovisual stimuli related to swallowing motions. In this study, three kinds of stimuli related to human swallowing movement (auditory stimuli alone, visual stimuli alone, or audiovisual stimuli) were presented to the subjects, and activated brain areas were measured using fMRI and analyzed. When auditory stimuli alone were presented, the supplementary motor area was activated. When visual stimuli alone were presented, the premotor and primary motor areas of the left and right hemispheres and prefrontal area of the left hemisphere were activated. When audiovisual stimuli were presented, the prefrontal and premotor areas of the left and right hemispheres were activated. Activation of Broca's area, which would have been characteristic of mirror neuron system activation on presentation of motion images, was not observed; however, activation of brain areas related to swallowing motion programming and performance was verified for auditory, visual and audiovisual stimuli related to swallowing motion. These results suggest that audiovisual stimuli related to swallowing motion could be applied to the treatment of patients with dysphagia.

本年は、16世紀における風景と地図の密接な相関関係の一端を詳らかにすることを目的に研究を進めた。とりわけピーテル・ブリューゲル(父)の下絵(1558年)による銅版画《アントワープのシント・ヨーリス門前の氷滑り》は冬の情景とアントワープの都市像を結び付けた最も初期の図像と考えられる。8月と2月に行ったベルギー王立図書館、アントワープ市立図書館、ベルリン国立素描館における調査では、要塞の完成した1557年以降、以前の都市図を特徴付けていた河向こうの都市景観ではなく、新しく完成した都市の要塞の側からの都市景観図が著しく増加したことが明らかになった。ブリューゲルの図像はこれらの都市景観図と同様の地誌的な関心をわけあうことから、本版画を地誌的風景画の展開の中に位置づけることが可能となった。また本版画は16世紀後半、アントワープの画家たちに数多く描かれた「雪のアントワープの景観」のプロト・タイプとなる作品である。油彩による「雪のアントワープの景観」の登場は1575年以降というアントワープが事実上衰退していく時期と重なっている。これらの作品を図像的、背景となる歴史的事実から分析した結果、かつて繁栄していた都市の姿を懐かしむ同時代人のノスタルジックな感情の高まり、そしてブリューゲルが1565年以降、油彩において手がけた「雪景色」の流行を背景に生まれてきたことが推察された。さらにこれらの作例は、必ずしも景観の忠実な再現とはいえないが、「地誌的」な概念やその「地域」の時間的、空間的特性という「近代的」風景画の成立に不可欠な構成要素を含んでいるという点において、「ジャンル」としての風景画の成立過程におけるひとつの大きな転換点を示すことが明らかになった。以上の考察結果は、3月に開催された美術史学会東支部例会において口頭発表し、現在その内容を学会誌への論文(6月宋投稿締め切り)として執筆し、投稿を準備中である。

朝鮮王朝は朱子学によって建国され、その思惟様式と対外観は16世紀に登場した李退溪(名は滉、字は景浩、退溪は号1501~70年)、李栗谷(名は珥、字は叔獻、栗谷は号 1536~84年)によって代表される。しかし朝鮮王朝が末期に近代に遭遇したとき、その基本的な思惟様式と対外観は大きく変容していた。それは、夷狄の中華への上昇可能性の肯定、儒教文明化以外の文明化への視野の拡大、この2 点である。こうした思惟様式と対外観の変容が起きつつあったときに、朝鮮王朝は近代を迎えることとなった。そのため高宗政権は、自ら近代化を進めながら、これらの近代的な夷狄との外交交渉、同盟関係を適宜構築していく政策を推進し、一定の成果をあげていくことができたのである。これらは国際関係を単に力関係から見るという次元では理解できないものであった。

We retrospectively studied the clinical and laboratory features and outcomes of chronic enteropathy in Shiba dogs. Among 99 dogs with chronic enteropathy, 21 Shiba dogs (21%) were included in the study (odds ratio, 7.14). No significant differences were seen in signalment, clinical signs, symptoms or laboratory profiles between the Shiba and non-Shiba groups. Severe histopathological lesions in the duodenum were a common finding in the Shiba group. The median overall duration of survival in the Shiba group was 74 days, while that of the dogs in the non-Shiba group could not be determined because more than half of the cases remained alive at the end of this study. The difference between the groups was statistically significant (P<0.0001). The 6-month and 1-year survival rates for the Shiba group were 46% and 31%, respectively. Conversely, the 6-month, 1-year and 3-year survival rates for the non-Shiba group were 83%, 74% and 67%. The results obtained here demonstrated that the Shiba dog is predisposed to chronic enteropathy and shows severe duodenum lesions and poor outcomes, indicating a breed-specific disease.

台湾、日本、サントペ・プリンシペでの調査の結果、台湾と日本では医学生であっても感染経路や被害の状況を正確に把握していない、治療に関し最新の正しい情報がないため恐怖心がある、台湾の調査では「対策」の講義の機会のある公衆衛生学科の学生のほうが医学科の学生よりも正確に理解していること等がわかった。HIV/AIDSが日本国内に入って来て約20年が経過したが、新規感染者数は増加傾向にあり低年齢化してきている。日和見感染症や喫煙との関係が深いことは後述する調査で明らかとなった。HIV/AIDSの感染経路となるDrugや喫煙と併せて、正しい基礎知識と予防策を学校教育の中で教えていくことが重要である。
