tert-Butanesulfinyl imines are exceedingly versatile intermediates for the asymmetric synthesis of amines. Aldimines 15 and ketimines 16 are prepared in high yields under mild conditions by condensing enantiomerically pure tert-butanesulfinamide 10, either enantiomer of which is readily synthesized in large scale from inexpensive reagents, with a wide range of aldehydes and ketones. The tert-butanesulfinyl group activates the imines for the addition of many different classes of nucleophiles, serves as a powerful chiral directing group, and after nucleophilic addition function as a versatile protecting group of the amines, which is readily cleaved by treatment with acid. A wide range of highly enantioenriched amines, including α-branched amines, α, α-dibranched amines, α- and β-amino acids, 1, 2- and 1, 3-amino alcohols, and α-trifluoromethylamines are efficiently synthesized using this methodology.

BACKGROUNDThe objective of this study was to investigate the methodological quality of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) systematic reviews (SRs) indexed in medRxiv and PubMed, compared with Cochrane COVID Reviews.METHODSThis is a cross-sectional meta-epidemiological study. We searched medRxiv, PubMed, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for SRs of COVID-19. We evaluated the methodological quality using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) checklists. The maximum AMSTAR score is 11, and minimum is 0. Higher score means better quality.RESULTSWe included 9 Cochrane reviews as well as randomly selected 100 non-Cochrane reviews in medRxiv and PubMed. Compared with Cochrane reviews (mean 9.33, standard deviation 1.32), the mean AMSTAR scores of the articles in medRxiv were lower (mean difference (MD): −2.85, 98.3% confidence intervals (CI): −0.96 to −4.74), and those in PubMed were also lower (MD: −3.28, 98.3%CI: −1.40 to −5.15), with no difference between the latter two.CONCLUSIONSReaders should pay attention to the potentially low methodological quality of SRs related to COVID-19 in both PubMed and medRxiv. Evidence users might be better to search the Cochrane Library rather than medRxiv or PubMed to search SRs related to COVID-19.

Aims. As the proportion of visceral (VAT) to subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) may contribute to type 2 diabetes (T2D) development, we examined this relation in a cross-sectional design within the Multiethnic Cohort that includes Japanese Americans known to have high VAT. The aim was to understand how ectopic fat accumulation differs by glycemic status across ethnic groups with disparate rates of obesity, T2D, and propensity to accumulate VAT.Methods. In 2013-16, 1,746 participants aged 69.2 (2.7) years from five ethnic groups completed questionnaires, blood collections, and whole-body DXA and abdominal MRI scans. Participants with self-reported T2D and/or medication were classified as T2D, those with fasting glucose >125 and 100-125 mg/dL as undiagnosed cases (UT2D) and prediabetes (PT2D), respectively. Using linear regression, we estimated adjusted means of adiposity measures by T2D status.Results. Overall, 315 (18%) participants were classified as T2D, 158 (9%) as UT2D, 518 (30%) as PT2D, and 755 (43%) as normoglycemic (NG) with significant ethnic differences (p<0.0001). In fully adjusted models, VAT, VAT/SAT, and percent liver fat increased significantly from NG, PT2D, UT2D, to T2D (p<0.001). Across ethnic groups, the VAT/SAT ratio was lowest for NG participants and highest for T2D cases. Positive trends were observed in all groups except African Americans, with highest VAT/SAT in Japanese Americans.Conclusions. These findings indicate that VAT plays an important role in T2D etiology, in particular among Japanese Americans with high levels of ectopic adipose tissue, which drives the development of T2D to a greater degree than in other ethnic groups.

Umi is located along the Kamimura River within the Kamiyahagi area of southeastern Ena City, Gifu Prefecture. The name 'Umi' means sea or large lake; however, there are no lakes in the mountainous Kamiyahagi area. The Tokai Gou (torrential rain) flood of September 11-12, 2000 destroyed embankments along the river, and exposed sedimentary layers that are typical of a lacustrine depositional setting. This confirms the existence of a paleo-lake from which the name Umi originated. The ^<14>C ages, ranging from 280±37 to 345±25 BP, appear to be contemporaneous with Tensho Earthquake that occurred in central Japan on January 18, 1586.

供試した10品種の中で6品種は光周期に不感応で,2品種は弱い感光性があり,2品種は強く反応した. これらの10品種はすべて西アフリカの主要な作期および二期作において使用されている. 強感光性品種を二期作において早く植えると,日長が長くなることによる過剰生長から回避できる. 西アフリカにおいては,感光性品種も非感光性品種も両作期において長日による遅延なしに作付可能である. 二期作における一般的な開花遅延はむしろ低温に起因するようにみえる.

アレン化合物1a (R=Me)及び1b (R=Ph)を合成した. 1をジメチル化しスルホニウム塩とすることで超原子価6配位炭素化合物2を合成した.ヨウ化メチルと銀塩を用いてジメチル化することで目的物を結晶化することができX線構造解析に成功した.2bにおいてメトキシ基の酸素原子とアレン骨格の中心炭素との距離はフェノキシ基の酸素原子と中心炭素間の距離よりも短いことが分かった.また1aを二電子酸化することで安定な三重項カルベンの合成を検討した.

The leaves of Petasites japonicus are used for their anti-allergic properties in traditional Korean, Japanese, and Chinese medicine. This study aimed to identify bioactive compounds isolated from P. japonicus leaves. All compounds were assessed for their ability of transcriptional activation, induction of phase 2 enzymes and heat shock proteins (HSPs), as well as protection against the UVB-induced apoptotic cell death. Bioactive compounds were isolated from P. japonicus leaves. All compounds were evaluated for their protective effect using human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) and human epidermal keratinocyte cells (HEKC) treated with UVB radiation. Four flavonoids were isolated from the leaves of P. japonicus and identified as kaempferol-3-O-(6″-acetyl)-β-D-glucoside (1), quercetin-3-O-(6″-acetyl)-β-D-glucoside (2), kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucoside (3), and quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucoside (4). These compounds activated nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) and heat-shock response transcription elements (HSE) that resulted in the induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and HSP70, respectively. Activation of these pathways provided protection to the skin cells against UVB radiation. The isolated compounds activated the Nrf2 and HSE pathways and could protect against UVB-induced apoptosis.
