A paleomagnetic study of 24 lava flows from Pagan Island (18.1°N, 145.7°E) in the Mariana Islands was conducted to determine the geomagnetic paleosecular variation in the Western Pacific. All flows are normally magnetized, and attempts to obtain radiometric ages for these flows were unsuccessful, and paleointensity determinations by the ‘Thellier method’ were unreliable. The mean virtual geomagnetic pole, (88°N, 110°W) is not significantly different from the rotation axis, suggesting that the lavas erupted over a period that spans at least several thousand years. The between-site angular dispersion SB, is used as a measure of the secular variation. SB=6.0° with respect to the mean VGP, and SB=6.2° with respect to the axis of rotation with a 95 percent confidence interval for the latter of 5.2°<SB<7.8°. Possible interpretations of the data include: (1) the sites studied represent an inadequate coverage in time; (2) the Marianas should be included in the Pacific dipole window; (3) there is a belt of average low angular dispersion encircling the earth between (roughly) 0° and 40°N.

ヒトの生活において食事は重要な位置づけである。しかし、近年のライフスタイルの多様化に伴って食事の形態は変化し、「孤食」や栄養の偏った「偏食」がみられるようになった。そのような中で、「食育」が叫ばれてきている。食育の中でも食事の環境は大切であると考える。というのは、食事の環境は免疫機能の活性化を大きく左右し、加えて会食は、人間関係を形成するなど、社会的、精神的に良好な生活につながると考えられている。会食を行うことは、身体に必要な栄養素の摂取や心理面における満足感などの食事本来の目的のほかに、笑いや楽しみが得られ、ストレス軽減、免疫能の向上の効果があると考えられる。そこで、免疫系と内分泌系の機能検査として、末梢血中のNK細胞活性とコルチゾール値を用いて会食によるNK細胞活性、コルチゾール値の変化を検討し、会食がストレス軽減につながるかについて考察する。

11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) behaves predominantly as an oxoreductase converting the receptor-inactive glucocorticoids to their active forms in vivo, while the type 2 isoform (11β-HSD2) possesses only dehydrogenase activity and inactivates cortisol in human or corticosterone in rat. We determined enzyme activity of 11β-HSD in rat lungs from fetus to adult, and examined whether 11β-HSD1 exists in alveolar type II cells, the most important site for the synthesis of pulmonary surfactant in mature lungs, by immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Enzyme activity of 11β-HSD1 and 2 in lung tissue homogenate were determined as NADP+- and NAD+-dependent conversion of corticosterone to 11-dehydrocorticosterone, respectively. We found that 11β-HSD1 activity was increased progressively from 21 days gestation to 7 weeks after birth. 11 β-HSD2 activity was significantly lower than that of 11β-HSD1 throughout gestation and after birth. Immunoreactivity for 11β-HSD1 was detected in the cytoplasm of the cells in the alveolar region of adult rats. Some of these expressing 11β-HSD1 were considered to be alveolar type II cells, because of their cuboid shape and localization at the corner of the alveoli. RT-PCR demonstrated 11 β-HSD1 mRNA in isolated alveolar type II cells. Our results suggest that alveolar type II cells enhance intracellular glucocorticoid availability via 11β-HSD1. 11β-HSD1 in alveolar type II cells is thought of as an autocrine amplifier of glucocorticoid action in the lung.

Background:Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA)-derived fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) is an established tool for identifying lesion-specific ischemia that is now approved for use by the Japanese insurance system. However, current clinical reimbursement is strictly limited to institutions with designated appropriate use criteria (AUC). This study assessed differences in physicians’ behavior (e.g., use and interpretation of FFRCT, final management) according to Japanese AUC and non-AUC site designation.Methods and Results:Of 5,083 patients in the ADVANCE Registry, 1,829 from Japan were enrolled in this study. Physicians’ behavior after interrogating CCTA and FFRCTwas analyzed separately according to AUC and non-AUC site designation. Compared with AUC sites, patients referred for FFRCTfrom non-AUC sites had a higher rate of negative FFRCT, less severe anatomic stenosis, and a slightly lower rate of management plan reclassification (51.2% vs. 61.3%), with near-identical utility in both groups. Actual care corresponded equally well to post-FFRCTplans in both groups. The likelihood of revascularization for positive or negative FFRCTwas similar between the 2 groups. Importantly, AUC and non-AUC sites were equally unlikely to revascularize patients with negative FFRCTand stenosis >50% or patients with positive FFRCTand stenosis <50%.Conclusions:Compared with AUC sites, non-AUC sites had lower disease burden and reclassification of management plans, but nearly identical clinical integration. Actual care corresponded equally well to post-FFRCTrecommendations at both sites.

Pulse electrodepositon is a useful technique with which it is possible to achieve atomic-scale control of the layer composition, thickness of the multilayer and the grain size in ferromagnetic films by regulating the pulse amplitude and width. It is possible to fabricate ferromagnetic films with various magnetic properties from a single electrolytic solution containing more than two kinds of metallic ions, by changing the step pulse wave. Multilayer films composed of a Ni-rich layer with high coercive force, an Fe-Ni layer with low coercive force, and a nonmagnetic Cu layer were produced by controlling the step pulse potential from a single electrolytic solution containing Fe, Ni and Cu ions. Moreover, we are able to produce thinner ferromagnetic films consisting of multiple layers with magnetic characteristics such as a wide variation in coercive force, high susceptibility, and large magnetoresistance effect by controlling the time interval of the step pulse.In this study, we investigated the relationships between the magnetic field dependence of the magnetoresistance effect and the film preparation conditions for composition-modulated Fe-Cu-Ni alloy films produced by the pulse electrodeposition method. The MR ratio observed in the film has maximum values of 3.4% and 9% at 300 K and 5 K, respectively. A highly sensitive change of the electric resistance was obtained at a low magnetic field.
