Dextromethorphan (3-methoxy-17-methylmorphinan) has complex pharmacologic effects on the central nervous system. Although some of these effects are neuropsychotoxic, this review focuses on the neuroprotective effects of dextromethorphan and its analogs. Some of these analogs, particularly dimemorfan (3-methyl-17-methylmorphinan) and 3-hydroxymorphinan, have promising neuroprotective properties with negligible neuropsychotoxic effects. Their neuroprotective effects, the mechanisms underlying these effects, and their therapeutic potential for the treatment of diverse neurodegenerative disorders are discussed.

Sociability is an essential trait for dogs to successfully interact with humans. In this study, the relationship between sociability and physiological stress was examined. Additionally, whether differences exist between companion dogs (C group) and shelter dogs (S group) was examined. Overall, healthy 37 dogs (C group=21 and S group=16) were examined. After 5 min of walking, the dog and the owner (or the chief manager) rested freely in the experimental location for 5 min. The behavioral test with 6 categories was conducted to evaluate sociability over 4 min. The establishment of two groups (H group=dogs with high sociability; L group=dogs with low sociability) was supported by the statistical results of the behavioral tests. Saliva was collected before (P1) and after the test period (P2), and salivary cortisol levels were determined and statistically analyzed. The cortisol concentrations at P2 and the differences in concentrations between P1 and P2 (P2–P1) in the groups with high sociability were significantly lower than those in the groups with low sociability. These results may demonstrate that sociable dogs adapt more comfortably to strangers and unfamiliar situations. Meanwhile, there were significant differences in hormonal results between the C and S groups. For this reason, their sociability should be evaluated using behavioral and physiological assessments before re-adoption to ensure their successful adaptation.

An 11-year-old female golden retriever dog had a mass at the right corner of the upper lip, which gradually increased in size and protruded into the oral cavity. The mass was removed surgically. The cut surface of the mass was smooth, whitish and solid, and covered by the oral mucosal membrane. Histopathologically, the mass consisted mainly of reticular pattern of short spindle cells that stained positively for cytokeratin AE1/AE3, α-smooth muscle actin and p63, suggestive of a myoepithelial cell phenotype. Between the neoplastic cords, there was myxoid or edematous connective tissue. Additionally, neoplastic cells with luminal epithelial and basal cell phenotypes were arranged in ducts and small islands, respectively. Based on the diverse histological and immunohistochemical features, the tumor was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma of the labial gland. To our knowledge, the reticular proliferation pattern of myoepithelial cells has not been described in salivary gland tumors of domestic animals.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a 40-minute race on muscle activity and spatiotemporal cycle variables at four-time points during a 12-km roller skiing test using the double-poling technique. [Subjects and Methods] Five elite cross-country (XC) skiers on the Korean National reserve team participated in the study. Part of a biathlon course that consisted of both flat land and slopes was selected, and three measurements were recorded after every 4-km lap. Spatiotemporal variables, mean frequency and mean amplitude of 6 muscles were the chosen computational parameters. [Results] Significant differences were observed in cycle time and rate. The mean frequency of the upper-body muscles exhibited declining trends, with statistically significant differences for the triceps brachii. In addition, there were significant differences in the mean amplitude of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius. The activity of the triceps brachii, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius showed some degree of dependence on the technique. [Conclusion] Training and race strategies that improve the function of elbow extensors and ankle dorsiflexors are important in XC skiing; the application of roller-ski training research to actual XC skiing competitions is needed.

第2次安倍政権は、金融緩和、財政支出拡大と成長戦略を組み合わせた「アベノミクス」を推進しようとしている。アベノミクスに対する懸念のひとつが、財政の持続可能性である。本稿では、成長率、税収の伸び率を一定の値に仮定して財政収支を予測する「機械的試算」により財政健全化の可能性を検証した。本稿のシミュレーションでは、仮に名目成長率3 %、名目長期金利が2 % で成長率を下回るという都合のよいケースでも、2050 年度の対GDP 比でみた国債残高は200%を突破し、名目金利が成長率を上回る4 % のケースでは、300%を超えてしまうことがわかった。2020 年度のプライマリーバランス(基礎的財政収支)は、消費税率換算で6.6%程度の赤字が予想される。

コレステリック液晶はストップバンド端において光の群速度異常が誘起されるため、レーザーデバイスへの応用が可能となる。しかしながら、これまでのコレステリック液晶を用いたレーザー発振では、ストップバンド端における群速度異常はレーザーの出力光にのみ用いられてきた。我々はこの群速度異常を出力光のみならず、入力される励起光にも利用することによりレーザー発振の低閾値化及び高効率化を試みた。

Platelet function hyper-activity has been reported in Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm, HW)-infected dogs. Although the mechanism of increased platelet hyper-activity has not yet been elucidated, it is suggested to be mediated by unknown factors, which may be related to adult HW components. This study aims to determine whether adult male HW whole body extract induces canine platelet aggregation in vitro. The results indicate that HW extract caused an aggregation of canine platelets in a concentration-dependent manner. This aggregation ability of the HW extract was not mediated by the adenosine diphosphate receptor. In addition, the mechanisms of aggregation did not require cyclooxygenase-dependent pathways, and the aggregating activity of substances contained in the HW extract was heat stable; therefore, the active substances may be different from collagen. Furthermore, the platelet aggregating activity remained within the molecular weight (MW)≥100,000 fraction obtained by ultrafiltrating the HW extract. In contrast, the MW<100,000 fraction also had a platelet aggregation ability, but the aggregation pattern was reversible and the maximum extent decreased, compared with the MW≥100,000 fraction response. Our experiments have been conducted using a whole body extract from adult HWs to determine with certainty the aggregating activity of HW elements on canine platelets. More studies are necessary to evaluate the effects of the metabolic products released from live adult worms in pulmonary arteries and the symbiont bacterium Wolbachia-derived antigens on canine platelet aggregation.

In paleoparasitology, which is the study of ancient parasite species, parasite egg remnants in archaeological samples are examined by microscopic or molecular analysis. The parasitological information thus obtained can inform speculation about the parasite-infection patterns that prevailed in ancient societies. The current analysis of ancient feces removed from Joseon period mummies adds six new paleoparasitological outcomes to the existing pool of mummy parasitism data already maintained in South Korea. The current microscopic examination revealed the ancient parasite eggs of Trichuris, Clonorchis, Paragonimus, Ascaris, and Taenia in the Joseon mummy feces. When the updated Joseon data were compared with the 20th-century National Survey statistics of South Korea, clear differences could be observed between ancient and modern parasite infection rates. These results will yield invaluable insights—unobtainable by conventional historical investigation—that contribute to the knowledge base on the parasitism of pre-industrial East Asian societies.

農業基本法が制定されて以来,一連の構造政策が試みられたが,その現場である市町村段階においては「構造政策の受入れと農業事情のバリエーションの増大が著るしい。このバリエーションの増大の実態,その中に市町村の白治行財政のあり方がどのように絡みこんでいるか,さらに市町村・農協・農民グループの連携努力がどのように絡みこんでいるか,に関する一連の事態関連を「数量化の理論・第III類」の解析手法をもって解析した。その結果,バリエーションを展開させるソーティング・マシン-市町村の類別の作用カの結合機構-がえられた。それは1水田整備を中心とした構造政策の受入れの容易性,2他の政策との関連における市町村当局の農政姿勢,3市町村内における産地形成努力と構造政策との関連,4農業的開発前線の自然的環境との関連における持たれかた,5農業の内発的展開の担い手としてのファーマー的農家の析出方向, を導く作用カを体現している5個の相互に独立した仕訳作用カの連結器としてのソーティング・マシンであった。この仕訳メカニズムをめぐって,農業構造政策における「つぎ水構造」と「ねじれ現象」が観察された。

A magneto-optical microscope magnetometer (MOMM) has been developed to grab the domain reversal patterns in real time under applying a magnetic field, as well as, to simultaneously measure the local magnetic ptoperties with 400-nm spatial resolution.Using the system, the domain reversal behavior is revealed to change contrastingly between wall-motion and nucleation dominant with changing the multilayer structure of Co/Pd multilayers.From a quantitative analysis, the reversal ratio of the wall-motion speed over the nucleation rate is a governing parameter for the contrasting domain reversal dynamics.The activation volumes of the wall-motion and nucleation processes are found to be unequal, and the difference is closely ralated with the domain dynamics.Based on a Monte-Carlo simulation, both the macroscopic magnetic properties and the local magnetic variation are responsible for the contrasting domain reversal behavior.

As part of our chemical screening program for new microbial secondary metabolites, we discovered a new compound, JBIR-107 (<b>1</b>), from the culture of <i>Streptomyces tateyamensis</i> NBRC 105047 isolated from a marine sponge sample. Extensive NMR and MS spectroscopic data enabled the structure of <b>1</b> to be determined as 5-acetamido-6-(4-(methyl(2-oxo-3-phenylpropyl)amino)phenyl)-4-oxohexanoic acid.

Gastrointestinal zoonotic helminths of dogs and cats have a public health concern worldwide. We investigated the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths of zoonotic significance in dogs and cats in lower Northern Thailand and utilized molecular tools for species identification of hookworms and Opisthorchis viverrini. Fecal samples of 197 dogs and 180 cats were collected. Overall prevalence of infection using microscopy was 40.1% in dogs and 33.9% in cats. Helminth infection found in both dogs and cats included hookworms, Spirometra spp., Taenia spp., Toxocara spp., O. viverrini, Strongyloides spp. and Trichuris spp. Hookworms were the most common helminth in dogs, while Spirometra spp. was the most prevalent in cats. Among hookworm infection in dogs and cats, Ancylostoma ceylanicum was the most prevalent hookworm, being 82.1% in hookworm infected dogs and 95.8% in hookworm infected cats. Mixed-infection due to hookworms and Spirometra spp. was the most dominant in both dogs and cats. Our finding showed that zoonotic helminth infection is highly prevalent in dogs and cats in the lower Northern area of Thailand.

Schwann cell tumor occurring in the intestines is rare . A 68-year-old female came to our hospital because of hematemesis. Barium enema and colonoscopic examination revealed submucosal tumor in the sigmoid colon. Laboratory data showed mild anemia . No other abnormal finding was found in the blood chemistry. Tumor marker levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), CA19-9, alpha feto protein (AFP) and neuron specific enolase (NSE) were within normal limits. The exploratory laparotomy confirmed a large sigmoid colon tumor. She received sigmoid colectomy. The resected specimen was a submucosal tumor with central depression, measuring 4.7×3.5×3.0cm in size. The cut surface of the tumor was yellowish hue with necrosis. Histological examination showed spindle-shaped tumor cells with palisading comma-shaped nuclei and the nuclear pleomorphism. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that the tumor was positive for S-100 protein staining, and negative for Actin and for H.H.F. staining. These findings showed that this tumor was of Schwann cell origin. We report here the case in detail of a schwannoma in the sigmoid colon.
