To investigate the long-term effect of feeding royal jelly (RJ) on the testicular function, 32-week old male golden hamsters were fed diet containing RJ at doses of 0 μg/g diet (control), 50 μg/g diet or 500 μg/g diet for 12 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the hamsters were assessed for testicular function in terms of the amounts of intra-testicular free testosterone (TS) and histopathological changes. RJ diet groups showed higher TS levels and more intensive spermatogenesis than the control group in a dose-dependent manner. The intensity of spermatogenesis and TS levels in the 500 μg of RJ/g diet group showed significant differences of p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively, when compared with those in the control group. These results indicate that the long-term feeding of RJ inhibits the age-associated decline in the testicular function of male hamsters.

Adult urodele amphibians such as newts are capable of regenerating lost structures including their limbs. In these species, dedifferentiation of myofiber is essential for the regenerative process. Upon terminal differentiation, nuclei of myofiber (myonuclei) are withdrawn from cell cycle, but prior to dedifferentiation, myonuclei reenter the cell cycle. In contrast with urodele amphibians, it is generally accepted that mammalian myofibers are not able to dedifferentiate in response to muscle injury. A recent study has suggested that electroporation can induce dedifferentiation response of skeletal muscle in newt limbs. In the present study, we examined whether myonuclei of skeletal muscle of mammals are capable of reentering the cell cycle by means of electroporation. Electroporation was applied to tibialis anterior muscle of the rat with or without plasmid DNA. Histological analyses revealed that, while electroporation induces degenerative/regenerative responses in skeletal muscle irrespective of the presence of plasmid DNA, the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in myonuclei was observed only in the presence of plasmid DNA. The present results indicate that myonuclei of skeletal muscle are capable of reentering the cell cycle and suggest that in vivo electroporation can induce dedifferentiation of mammalian skeletal muscle.

In this study, we investigated diabetic stage dependent cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) immunoreactivity in the dentate gyrus in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic rats. The animals were sacrificed at 2, 3 and 4 weeks after STZ treatment. Blood glucose levels were increased after STZ treatment. COX-2 immunoreactivity in dentate gyrus was significantly increased in these regions 3 weeks after STZ treatment and restored to its basal level to 4 weeks after STZ treatment. In contrast, COX-2 immunoreactivity was not changed in CA3 region in all groups. These results suggest that STZ-induced type 1 diabetes transiently, but not permanently, decreased synaptic transmission and plasticity 3 weeks after STZ treatment in the dentate gyrus.

We evaluated effect of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) specific lytic phage CJ12 in ETEC infected pigs. Phage was mixed with feed at a ratio of 1:1,000 (0.1%). One week after initially providing phage mixed feed, pigs were challenged orally with 1011 CFU of ETEC and body weight, diarrhea score, bacterial CFU and phage PFU in the feces were measured. Pigs of phage treated groups C (106 PFU/g) and D (108 PFU/g) showed more resistance to diarrhea due to ETEC infection compared to positive control group B on the third day after the initial challenge. Moreover, during the quantitation of ETEC in feces, both groups C and D showed approximately 63.92 and 60.73% reduced ETEC compared to positive control group B. Phages were successfully isolated from feces in both groups C and D during the experiment without any adverse effects, suggesting the possibility of using CJ12 as a feed additive.

m-Calix[3]amide having pyridine on the benzene ring (PyC3A) was synthesized by the cyclization of methyl 3-nonylamino-5-(pyridin-4-yl)benzoate using lithium 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS). The molecular cage 3Pd·2PyC3A was prepared from a 2:3 mixture of PyC3A and [Pd(dppp)(OTf)2] in CDCl3/CD3OD (5/1 in volume). On the other hand, in CDCl3, the formation of a polymeric mixture was confirmed.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of some H1-antagonists on the sleep-wake cycle in sleep-disturbed rats in comparison with those of nitrazepam. Electrodes were chronically implanted into the frontal cortex and the dorsal neck muscle of rats for the electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG), respectively. EEG and EMG were recorded with an electroencephalograph. SleepSign ver. 2.0 was used for EEG and EMG analysis. The total times of waking, non-rapid eye movement (non-REM), and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep were measured from 10:00 to 16:00. Nitrazepam showed a significant decrease in sleep latency, total waking time, and delta activity and an increase in the total non-REM sleep time. A significant decrease in the sleep latency was observed with diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine, and cyproheptadine. Cyproheptadine also caused a significant decrease in the total waking time and increases in total non-REM sleep time, REM sleep time, slow wave sleep, and delta activity, although no remarkable effects were observed with diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine. In conclusion, cyproheptadine can be useful as a hypnotic, having not only sleep inducing-effects, but also sleep quantity- and quality-increasing effects.

Recently, social network services are rapidly growing and this trend is expected to continue in the future. Social network data can be published for various purposes such as statistical analysis and population studies. When social network data are published, however, the privacy of some people may be disclosed. The most straightforward manner to preserve privacy in social network data is to remove the identifiers of persons from the social network data. However, an adversary can infer the identity of a person in the social network by using his/her background knowledge, which consists of content information such as the age, sex, or address of the person and structural information such as the number of persons having a relationship with the person. In this paper, we propose a privacy protection method for social network data. The proposed method anonymizes social network data to prevent privacy attacks that use both content and structural information, while minimizing the information loss or distortion of the anonymized social network data. Through extensive experiments, we verify the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

The propagation threshold power through a white tight-buffered single-mode optical fiber was found to be 3% less than that through a transparent acrylate-coated fiber. This is because the white pigments in the buffer layer backscatter the visible emission that pumps a fiber fuse. Namely, the backscattered light is absorbed by the thermal decomposition product SiO in the glass melt surrounding the traveling plasma. This self-pumping effect was revealed by comparing the void trains left in fiber segments coated with white or black oil paint. This threshold reduction compels us to re-examine the power tolerance design of optical networks and fiber fuse terminators.

Flavangenol (FG), an extract of French maritime pine bark (Pinus maritime) mainly contains proanthocyanidin in oligomers. It has many physiological effects, including antioxidant and anti-atherosclerosis. In this study, we evaluated the effects of FG on rat collagen-induced arthritis, a model of human rheumatoid arthritis. The rats were fed with the diet of control, 0.3% FG, or 1% FG for 4 wk after the induction of arthritis. The FG diets, compared with the control diet, suppressed the increase in arthritic score and swelling of the paws in a dose-dependent manner. Histopathological examination revealed evidence that the 1% FG diet suppressed acute and chronic articular lesions in the rats. In addition, the FG diets (0.3% and 1%) suppressed the production of nitric oxide in the plasma of the rats. These results suggest that dietary FG has beneficial effects on collagen-induced arthritis in rats by inhibiting the acute and chronic inflammatory reactions.

Isomeric oligosaccharides and isomeric glycopeptides are sometimes difficult to separate on normal-phase (NP) and reversed-phase (RP) columns. A zwitterionic type of hydrophilic-interaction chromatography column with sulfobetaine groups (called ZIC-HILIC column) was first applied to the separation of 2-aminopyridine derivatized (PA) N-glycans and tryptic peptides of human serum immunoglobulin G (IgG). It is shown that the ZIC-HILIC column has high capability for structural recognition of isomeric N-glycans as well as high selectivity for glycopeptides. The former feature (i.e., structural recognition) was proven by sufficient separation of neutral PA N-glycan isomers, which are usually difficult to separate on NP and RP columns. In addition, it is noteworthy that IgG glycopeptides consisting of isomeric N-glycans and the same peptide sequences can be sufficiently separated on a ZIC-HILIC column. The latter feature (i.e., selectivity) was also demonstrated by easily separating two peptide groups with/without N-glycans. Thus, we note that the ZIC-HILIC column is highly promising for a simple analysis of N-glycans and N-glycopeptide samples. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Buzz-pollination of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum MILL) by four native species of Japanese bumblebees (Bombus hypocrita hypocrita PEREZ, B. ignitus SMITH, B. ardens ardens SMITH, and B. diversus diversus SMITH) was examined. A high (84-100%) fruiting rate and almost no puffy fruit )0-7%) resulted from pollination by the Japanese bumblebees. There was no difference in the pollination efficiency between the imported non-native bumblebee (B. terrestris) and Japanese bumblebees. Pollination of tomato crops using native bumblebees is recommended because there are no ecological risks.

われわれは、日本製造業の競争優位を分析するに当って、エレクトロニクス産業を主要対象に選ぶこととした。何故ならこの産業は、1980年代半ばまでは、全体として高い競争優位を国際的に誇示してきたにもかかわらず、1980年代後半から90年代にかけてその優位をかなり低下させたと思われるからである。各種のデータは、その事をあきらかにしている。しかもこの様な状況をもたらした諸要因は、現在あるいは近い将来に他の産業においてもおこりうると推定されるのである。これに対し、日本企業の競争力に差をつけられていたアメリカのエレクトロニクス産業は、80年代後半から90年代にかけて国際的競争優位を復元するにいたった。これには色々な要因があるが、その主要な要因、少なくともその一つとして、エレクトロニクス産業に起こった顕著なモジュール化の動き、そしてこれにともなって生じた企業間水平分業の推進があげられる。すなわちモジュール-構成部品さらにそのサブ部品を統合するデザインルールが明示的に構築され、それが守られるならば、各企業は特定部品の開発・試作・生産に特化した開発・生産を行なうチャンスが生まれる。企業の資源がこのような特定部品の革新に集中し、競争が行なわれるならば、イノベーションの速度と水準は向上する。その一つの成功事例がインテルのMPUである。さらに多くのエレクトロニクス企業の製造活動を受託し、コスト低減を実現するEMS企業も生まれた。IBMは高付加価値半導体の生産を除くと製品開発・基本設計・サービスに専念し、製造の多くを外部に委託している。また台湾の製品設計企業と受託生産企業との柔軟な連繋システム、韓国財閥係企業にみられる戦略的投資と急速な技術力の上昇がめだっている。これに対し日本の大手エレクトニクス企業は、程度の差はあれ、部品生産を含む多分野の事業を営む、垂直統合型構造をつくりあげており、モジュール化の大きな流れと不適合状態を生み出している。またこの様な事業構造の下では、特定の事業に大規模な戦略的投資を適時に行なうことは容易ではない。それは80年代半ばまでの成功によって企業戦略の主要標的を日系企業におき、同型の戦略をいかに他社に遅れずに進めるかといった同調行動の慣性から中々抜け出せないことにもよっている。また製品寿命の短縮、開発スピード加速化、短期納入などの必要に直面しているにもかかわらず、企業組織面では、開発・設計・製造・マーケティング各機能内の連繋の弱さがめだっている。また海外事業拠点が発信している戦略的問題提起を柔軟にうけとめることができないといった、本社中心主義がめだっている。このような分析の上でわれわれは、競争優位再構築の可能性、国際経営の在り方についても一定の検討を加えた。

Drug abuse involving dextromethorphan, an antitussive, has been a social problem in various geographic locations since the 1960s. Ironically, high doses of the drug confer neuroprotective activity with central nervous system and behavioral effects. Accumulating evidence suggests that metabolism to phencyclidine-like dextrorphan is not essential for the neuroprotective activity of dextromethorphan. Here, we review the neuroprotective properties of dextromethorphan and its potential for abuse and the potential neuroprotective effects of the drug’s analogs and 3-hydroxymorphinan, a metabolite of dextromethorphan. These compounds may provide a novel therapeutic direction for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as convulsive or parkinsonian-like disorders.

We undertook a fundamental investigation of the removal of endocrine disruptors from aqueous solution by a sorption method using activated carbons, and compared the removal ability of endocrine disruptors by activated carbons to that by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes. The activated carbons exhibited high removal ability of 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP), 100 fold increased adsorption over that with PDMS membranes from aqueous solution of DBCP. The removal ratio of the endocrine disruptors, <i>e.g., </i>1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane, dibenzo-<i>p</i>-dioxin, and hexachlorocyclohexane, increased linearly in an aqueous solution with increasing the logarithm of <i>P</i><sub>ow</sub> of the endocrine disruptors. Almost complete removal of the endocrine disruptors (<i>i.e.,</i>>85%) was observed above log <i>P</i><sub>ow</sub>=3.5 in 25 mL of an aqueous solution using 0.05 g activated carbon. One aim of the present study is to use preferential sorption of chemical contaminants onto activated carbons for removal of the chemical contaminants from aqueous solutions including drinking water, beverages, milk, and human milk. When the removal of endocrine disruptors contained in milk or human milk is targeted, water soluble vitamins in the milk, such as vitamin B<sub>2</sub>, vitamin B<sub>12</sub>, and niacin are expected to be co-currently adsorbed on the activated carbons. Therefore, the present sorption method using activated carbon was applied to the removal of endocrine disruptors, such as di-<i>n</i>-octylphthalate, from the mineral water and 89% of di-<i>n</i>-octylphthalate was removed.

A new model of fine three-dimensional P-wave velocity structure down to a depth of 1200 km beneath the Japanese Islands and their vicinity is derived by a tomographic inversion of ISC travel time data with resolution analyses. We used 103,023 arrival time data observed at 548 stations from 833 earthquakes to determine the velocity anomalies in a number of blocks and source parameter corrections simultaneously. A block size of 0.5°× 0.5° in horizontal dimension and 50 km in depth (for the uppermost three layers 0.5°×0.5°×33 km) was used in this study. Detailed features of lateral heterogeneity in the upper mantle are revealed. High velocity zones corresponding to the Pacific and Philippine Sea slabs are well delineated. Low velocity anomalies corresponding to the volcanic front are found. High or low velocity anomalies in the crust or uppermost mantle correspond to positive or negative Bouger anomalies. And high velocity anomalies correspond to low heat flow. In the lower mantle, slab-shaped high velocity anomalies are found extending deeper than the termination of seismic activity within the Pacific slab descending from the Japan Trench. A resolution analysis confirms the existence of the slab-like high velocity region in the lower mantle, though the extent of its depth is not well resolved. On the other hand, the Pacific slab descending from the Izu-Bonin Trench seems to be fingering; that is, high velocity anomalies penetrate into the lower mantle at about 26°N, but do not penetrate and bend horizontally to the west in the deeper portion of the upper mantle at about 29°N.日本列島およびその周辺下1.200kmまでの3次元P波速度構造の詳細なモデルをトモグラフィー手法により得た.データは833個の地震による548観測点での走時データ103,032個(ISC報告値).解を得る際,未知数として震源位置・時刻の要素パラメータと速度構造を同時に求めた.速度構造を求める際に用いたブロックサイズは,水平方向に0.5°×0.5°,鉛直方向に50km(ただし深さ100kmまでは33km)である.その結果,上部マントルの不均質性が詳細に求められた.太平洋プレート,フィリピン海プレートを示す高速度域,火山フロントに対応する低速度域,等々.地殻,マントル上部のほとんどの高速度異常および低速度異常は,それぞれ正・負の重力以上と対応しているが,中国地方のように対応していないところもある.太平洋プレートの日本海溝からの延長上で地震活動が無くなる深さのさらに先に下部マントルまでのスラブ状の高速度域が得られた.レゾリューション解析から,深さ方向に分解能がないが下部マントルに確かに高速度域が存在することが分かった.一方伊豆-小笠原スラブではこの高速度域は,北緯26度付近では650km以深に鉛直方向に分布するが,北緯29度付近では650km付近で横たわって見える.
