Implementation of training system of the ability to plan and manage social consensus building projects at the level of local government officials have already started all over the country. However, the consciousness of officials for social consensus building has not yet been grasped. This study will show the analysis of questionnaire by newly employed officials in Hiroshima prefecture. The purpose of the study is to make a suggestion toward the subject of acquiring the ability for the local officials to make a collaborative work with multi stakeholders.

We have confirmed the fact that the sound quality of copied digital signal is, in some cases, better than the sound quality of the original CD”, then we have considered the concerned factors and characteristics to improve the sound quality. Since no sound quality measurement tool exist, discovered two objective key perceptual assessment phrases of losing “floating atmosphere in the air-like resonance” and losing “chest penetrating impression” (Appendix 1) are used for the evaluation of the sound quality. The improvement of sound quality is up to +3 in the 7-grade comparison scale.

Modern life overflows with the maturity of industrialized society. The ideal way of the consumer who makes [Yarikuri] is long lost. Now the theme of ecology is important. It is thought that we should review the lost custom, and improve the way we consume. Kimono, if it is seen from the point of “Let us not waste! [Mottainai] value”, has an excellent characteristic in recycling and reuse. The system that uses it well exists. Kimono returns to one cloth when the seams are removed. It was a merchant named Shikkai to have handled the system. The industrialization society put it at maturity then, I researched who Shikkai are in what situation and what role he plays. As a result, it is exposed to the crisis of the disappearance with the decline of the kimono culture though Shikkai has undergone a transfiguration with the transition of economy and industry of our country after the war. However, the idea and aspect of “Let us not waste! [Mottainai] value” run to the basic concept [Kurimawashi] of Shikkai, and peeling off and using the original value of kimono. In addition, it is thought that it is necessary to study the behavior patterns of the coordination of collecting knowledge over many topics and using it.

To create innovative ideas, it is important for designers to monitor thought patterns by reflecting upon their thought structure and then control thought. In this study, we visualized the inference process, which includes deduction, induction, and abduction, as well as the associative process. Subsequently, by connecting them radially along the flow of thought, we employed a method of visualizing the inference process of designers on a two-dimensional plane. We conducted an experiment to visualize a part of the thought of designer using the “inference mapping method.” Consequently, we found out that different cognitive biases occurred in designers' deductive, inductive, abductive, and associative thinking processes. From the technical viewpoint of cognitive science, we studied the phenomena and clarified the structure of bias in each thought process. Finally, we proposed a way to visualize cognitive biases and to consciously eliminate them when designers engage in the creative process.

This paper proposes a new approach for the analysis of a customer's initial impressions of an automobile front view. It is important for manufactures to analyze the differences in the expression that a studied automobile provokes in the viewer. We have tried to estimate quantitatively both the “facial expression” and the “perceived age” using modals that are already in common usage, for fifty automobile front views. Two visual stimuli were used in our experiments: the drawings and the caricatures generated by an automotive caricaturing system coche-PICASSO. The results show that this approach is effective in analyzing motor vehicle viewer perception.

Oshibori is a small wet towel to wipe hands before meal in Japan. Most of researches on oshibori have investigated the towels from the perspective of cleaning and sanitation. Few studies have assessed the qualitative and sensory characteristics associated with oshibori. In this paper, subjective evaluation experiments were carried out using cotton oshibori of different temperatures such as 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 °C in the laboratory temperature at 20, 25 and 30 °C over four seasons. 29 males and 33 females evaluated oshibori on following properties such as “favorite,” “rare,” “hot,” “feel-smooth,” “high-grade,” “comfortable,” “soft,” and “moist,” according to five point grading. As results, the oshibori at the temperature of 5, 15, 45 and 60 °C were evaluated to be comfortable. Contrary, those of 30 and 75 °C were evaluated uncomfortable. Moreover, sexual specificity of the evaluation was observed.

This paper describes the relationship between voice quality of singing voice and color. We conducted 2 experiments. As stimuli, 28 voices were recorded from 11 amateur female singers. First, matching between voice quality and color was made with paired comparison. Color stimuli were categorized by 3 conditions and selected from the PCCS color system. As a result of binomial test, raters tended to agree with each other in the lightness condition. Second, voice stimuli were evaluated with 13 pairs of word as psychological features and 3 factors were extracted by factor analysis. In addition, 10 acoustic features were calculated as physical features. Based on the result of correlation analysis, it turned out that many features of colors are associated with impressions like a factor of “activity”. We also found that spectral centroid and spectral tilt might be related to some of the color features in the analysis of physical features.

In this paper, we propose an estimation of reader's emotion towards news articles using Twitter, and apply this method to the access log analysis of a news website. The proposed estimation method is divided into 3 steps: 1) The system collects tweets about news articles from Twitter. 2) The system tags each tweet with an emotion. 3) The system estimates the reader's emotion towards the news articles using tweets obtained in the second step. The system can tag an article with one or more of 11 emotions (anger, dislike, excitement, fear, like, joy, relief, sadness, shame, surprise, nothing). The experimental result shows the effectiveness of this method using Twitter for estimating the reader's emotion. For access log analysis based on emotion, we collected the access log of a self-produced news website. The system tags each collected news article with emotions using the proposed method. We analyzed the access log by using Hidden Markov model (HMM). As the result of access log analysis, we obtained some interesting findings such as that the users tend to read the article which causes excitement or surprise at the start.

Iyashi is a word that everyone often hears of in Japan. However, is it a feeling? a state? a process? The essence of Iyashi has not been clarified. Our target is to clarify the Iyashi structure and to use Iyashi to keep people's minds peaceful any time in the contemporary society to solve various problems by a scientific method. In our previous research, we analyzed and integrated the historical and social usage of Iyashi and several researchers' opinions and defined “Iyashi” as a stimulus and “Iyasareru” as a process. In this paper, we report the analysis of goods and that induce Iyashi to the mind of the observed persons. However, this time the first stage about goods analysis was recorded and we could get the elements of Iyashi goods. The final purpose of the analysis is to extract the main characteristics from goods to develop the machine that can make people's minds calm.

In the research on emotion, films have been used widely as a means for eliciting emotions in a laboratory because they affect psychological states of human beings. The studies by Philippot (1993), Gross & Levenson (1995) and Noguchi (2005) showed that specific emotion states, i.e., amusement, anger, contentment, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness and surprise, should be reliably elicited by films. In the media society we are living, the use of films as an effective representation for communicating information among ourselves has been increasing. As the previous studies showed, films should elicit emotions, and therefore the films used in the media society should affect the emotional nature of the media society. In order to establish a sound media society, it is required for those who produce films to understand appropriately the psychological states of the people who watch them. The purpose of this study was to develop producers' media literacy by the knowledge how specific films used in the media society should elicit specific emotional states of the viewers. We investigated psychological states of viewers in terms of their Kansei reaction, which is, in this experiment, the ability to induce the preference evaluation, i.e., like or dislike, when watching the films. We used four films associated with different types of information having the same playback time. Forty-nine participants carried out preference evaluations after watching the four films. We measured the Kansei reactions of the participants using 16 emotions proposed by Gross & Levenson (1995) and impression evaluations for 14 adjective pairs proposed by Gwasaki (2002). The result showed the way how the emotions and the impressions affected “like” and “dislike”. In particular, it was found that the emotion of “tension” is the key of the preference evaluation.

The impression of sharpness of body movements (Kire in Japanese) is critical for aesthetical evaluation of body movements in dance, gymnastics, and martial arts’ Kata. However, the basis of impression formation of sharpness has not been empirically investigated to date. This study was designed to clarify how body movements’ speed affected impression formation regarding body movements’ sharpness. We also examined the effects of unexpectedly fast body movements on impressions of sharpness. Participants rated the impressions of sharpness, subjective speed, and unexpectedness of body movements when viewing movies of Karate Kata performance. Multiple regression analysis and path analysis revealed that subjective speed and unexpectedness affected impressions of sharpness of body movements and that subjective speed also affected them through unexpectedness. These results suggest that manipulating the speed and unexpectedness of movements effectively enhances impressions regarding the sharpness of body movements.

There are a lot of long-standing companies in Kyoto, these companies are famous in worldwide. Also, you can see a typical long-standing company in all categories of business. The product and service which these companies offers have provided the peculiar value that starts appealing to human sensibility. However, it is high possible that to keep providing the same product and service with the special value is left in the trend, and it often becomes impossible to carry on their business. So, they can not continue their business in a long term and it is impossible to be a long-standing company. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the change of product/service by innovation for the Kyoto long-standing companies. We present three long-standing companies case at Kyoto. First, it is the long-standing inn “Tawaraya.” Second, it is the long-standing incense “Yamadamatsu.” Finally, it is the long-standing Karakami (a sliding door) “Karacho.” According to the case studies based on interviews, we analyze their innovation of their Kansei product and service using the product innovation method.

Through this research, I intend to show how improving the fit of a mask can benefit sufferers of hay fever. Currently available masks absorbed a large amount of pollen during experiments. However, the effects of wearing these masks are unclear. Therefore, I am interested in the fit of masks on faces. For quantitatively evaluating the fit ability of a mask on a face, I developed a device that measures the strain behavior of sheets and faces at the time of wearing a mask. To investigate the fit ability, angle change and position change at the time of vowel pronunciation were measured using the developed device comprising two shape sensors and a digital video camera. There were five measurement points on both the mask and face: two points ‘nc’ and ‘ns’ on the nose, one point ‘cc’ on the cheek and two points ‘jc’ and ‘js’ on the jaw. The first letters ‘n’, ‘c’ and ‘j’ denote the nose, cheek and jaw, respectively. The second letters ‘c’ and ‘s’ denote the centre and side, respectively. Four types of masks made of different materials and of different shapes were adopted as experiment samples: a 2D gauze mask, 3D gauze mask, pleated non-woven mask and molded non-woven mask. The subjects were seven young women. The fit ability of a mask was studied from the viewpoints of angular differences and correlation coefficients between a mask and a face, and the distance between the mask and face was measured. Analysis of angle changes showed that at point ns, the gauze masks assumed a convex shape against the face. The correspondence between results obtained for the gauze masks was lower at points ns, jc and js, whereas that for the non-woven masks was higher at points nc and cc. Moreover, analysis of the position changes revealed that the maximum vertical distances of the gauze masks were larger at points jc and js. These results proved that different materials and shapes of a mask yield different fit abilities.

There are many existing studies on information recommendation technology for presenting information better suited for the user's preference; however, no existing studies took account of human nature of being tired of the same old thing. This study has proposed a Kansei model that can be conscious of the boredom that arises from similar things repeated. Specifically, the model takes menu planning as a problem domain and formulates a sense of being tired of the same old thing. In addition, the study applied this Kansei model to actual data of menu planning and simulated a transition of the monotonousness level. Finally, it carried out an experiment with subjects to make a subjective evaluation for the same actual data, compared with a simulation result obtained using the model, and discussed the validity of the model created in this study.

In this study, we conducted interview surveys and observational surveys for understanding the characteristics of counseling skills possessed by expert hairdresser, and developed an integrated model of activities and thought processes in counseling. As a result, the following three characteristics were suggested: (1) The counseling process is proposal-based rather than listening-based, (2) The thoughts in the observation phase are based on abstract cognitions about clothing, and (3) The decision-making in the observation phase are more frequently in line with the customer’s wishes. These are expected not only to explain the skills possessed by expert hairdressers but also to provide clues for discussing counseling by novice. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute to the expertise of hairdresser. In constructing the model, we developed a method for integrated visualization of activities and thought processes. This method is considered to be novel and useful in skill analysis.

In this study, we compared and evaluated whether different facial expressions on the package resulted in different evaluations of the confectionery by presenting participants in the experiment with different facial expressions on a fictitious package and conducting a pairwise evaluation. In the result, it revealed differences in the evaluation of “visual taste” and “familiarity” depending on differences in facial expression, although the effects of the combination and individual differences in preference were also observed. As for the influence of each part of the face, it was found that the mouth part influenced “familiarity,” while the eye part had a significant influence on the “visual taste” evaluation. This suggests that having a face on the confectionery package with an appropriate facial expression for the product itself will help people feel more comfortable with the product and understand information such as the type and strength of the product’s flavor.

In this paper, we propose an emotion estimation method for words and its application to construct a word-emotion dictionary. Since the estimation of more delicate emotions in various natural language processing tasks is a crucial issue, we aim to estimate various emotions to a word. In order to realize it, we employ the distributional hypothesis and assume that an emotional word in a sentence influences the surrounding words. First, we collect more than 2,000 words expressing emotions from an emotion expression dictionary. By using these emotional words and a neural model based on Continuous Bag-of- Words (CBOW), we propose an automatic system to estimate the emotions of many ordinary words. As a result, emotion vectors for 20,000 words could be obtained. We carried out experiments to examine the accuracy of the vectors. It is confirmed that the generated emotion vectors reflect the emotion image for words that humans have.

We examined the effects of foot massage on healthy adult females’ mental and physical functions by electroencephalography as an emotional assessment method. We randomized 20 healthy adult females into 2 groups receiving a massage by a therapist (Group A) and mechanical massage using a commercially available massager (Group B), each of which consisted of 10 subjects. After massage, the lower limb volume significantly decreased in both groups, but Group A showed more favorable results related to comfort, pain, and feeling refreshed. Electroencephalography confirmed increased beta waves, indicating enhanced neuronal activity, in the medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate gyrus of Group A after massage. The results suggest that foot massage by a therapist positively influences not only physical functions, but also mental conditions.

The concept of entropy which was introduced as a thermodynamic property has been extended to the economics theory, information theory, and others. Even though “entropy” is used in many fields of science, it is not easy to understand the concept of entropy, as well as describing it by words/terms. We assume that one of the causes of such difficulty is the gap between psychological quantity caused by words/terms used in explaining the concept of entropy and actual entropy value. In this report, we investigated the correlation between the entropy and the psychological quantity obtained by showing binary dot pattern images to participants, and examined the correlation between the entropies calculated by several different algorithms and the psychological quantity by three verbal expressions. We have found that the entropy calculated by means of measuring the length between each black pixel has highest correlation to psychological quantity.

Emojis are extensively used to convey emotional nuances non-verbally in computer-mediated communication. Previous studies have examined how emojis are used and how they change the expression of a sentence, as well as the subsequent impression of the reader. Regarding whether the writer’s emotion is understood correctly by readers, evidence shows that emojis can enhance specific emotions. However, the effects of variation in the kinds of sentence, emotion, and emoji on the shifting emotion conveyed have not been studied. In this study, we examined the various factors that affect the shift in emotions being communicated. Our results demonstrated that positive emotions can be communicated more correctly compared with negative emotions and that smiley emojis (a.k.a. emoticons) can communicate emotions more clearly compared with other kinds of emoji.
