Nonverbal communications involving physical contact convey “Kansei” information that is difficult to express in verbal communications. In this study, we proposed a method to investigate “Kansei” information in nonverbal communications, and surveyed how people perceive nonverbal communication involving physical contact. In the psychological experiment using questionnaire, we presented various words describing tapping and patting actions with Japanese onomatopoeias and sound symbolic words expressing a concept or nuance that is difficult to verbalize explicitly. Participants first imaged the situation wherein they made communication with another person through the physical contact, and then evaluated the “Kansei” information of communications and rated them by adjectives. We found that onomatopoeias added a variety of impressions to communications with physical contact. We then applied factor analysis using adjective rating to extract a factor space of the communicative actions. For both tapping and patting motion, the first factor represented atmosphere of the behavior, and the second dimension represented activeness of the physical motions themselves. We then mapped the rating scores of desirability of the communication onto the factor spaces. The scores of the first and the second factors well predict in an additive way the desirability of communication for both actions, and the influence of the first factor was stronger than that of the second factor. These results suggest that the structure of factor space represents desirability of the communication regardless of actions. The proposed method may be useful and efficient to investigate the Kansei information, factor space, and their inter-relation, of nonverbal communications.

This study is to induce by the factor analysis the factors of wakuwaku, the positive emotions at work,and to get them structured by the covariance structure analysis. The authors identified five factors composed by twenty-five items as factors of wakuwaku, and then discovered that it is the circulating structure by using the covariance structure analysis. They quantitively validated those factors and its structure by the confirmative factor analysis and the PANAS analysis to prove the efficacy of the structure.

While there are reports on the reliability of the universal goniometer (UG) and smartphone application goniometer (SG), there have been no reports on user impressions when using these devices. In this study, impressions of users of UG and SG that are used in clinical practice were clarified and reliability was compared. Questionnaires on user impressions were administered to 13 staff members who work in the clinical field. Measurements in the hip and knee joints of seven participants were taken by three testers, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were obtained to assess reliability. Results showed that SG was superior in terms of appearance, weight, texture, portability, usability, versatility and readout. SG was inferior in terms of setting up measurement axes. However, SG demonstrated high reliability even when compared to UG. The intra-and inter-rater ICC were 0.51 to 0.89 and 0.65 to 0.75, respectively.

Emotional state before sleep affects the subsequent sleep onset. The purpose of this study was to investigate how positive/negative emotion before sleep effected hypnagogic state. The movies eliciting positive or negative emotion were presented before sleep. Hypnagogic imagery was recorded as a probe of emotional experience and EEG microstate analysis was used for finding the emotion related EEG activities. The score of emotion ratings for hypnagogic imagery indicated that positive emotion was reported in not only positive condition but also in negative condition. This implied that hypnagogic state might be accompanied by positive emotion. Comparing the appearance of maps obtained from microstate analysis between conditions, the map of right temporal activity was significantly greater in positive condition while the map of the left frontal activity was greater negative condition. These results suggested that the emotion not just in presleep but also in hypnagogic state was involved in sleep onset process.

Using near-infrared spectroscopy, the effect of facial self-touching on the prefrontal cortex activity was investigated by comparing the activations produced by the following conditions: 1) pressure applied to the cheeks (cheek-pressing) with bare hands, 2) cheek-pressing with hands wearing rubber groves, and 3) no touching. The results indicated that regions of the frontopolar cortex (FPC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) were significantly activated only under condition 1 (cheek-pressing with bare hands). In addition, the standard scores (z-scores) for cerebral blood flow in the FPC and OFC were significantly correlated with the subjective scores for pleasant emotions. These results indicate that the FPC and OFC are related to pleasant emotions during self-touching. These findings are expected to be applied to the quantitative assessment of pleasant emotions during facial self-touching.

In this paper, we focus on business and the impedance that is a concept in the electrical engineering. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to provide a new knowledge in this field by using the concept of impedance, and to show the relation of the analogy between the impedance and business, and attractive approach to business, marketing, design, user experience (UX), etc. The meaning of analogy is to guess from those similar. It can be interpreted as one form of analogy, for example, also “parable”. When we have a new experience, we consider the problem by analogy from previous experience unconsciously. This is the basic idea of what we are practicing on a daily life. This concept will be applicable to create a new idea. Rather than bring the near ones, the important thing in analogy conception is that it borrows from a field with distance in contents. Its methodology leads to produce the innovation. If we borrow from a place close that everyone noticed, it is not possible to obtain a value to be expected. Engineering is a discipline that has been developed in the focus be useful to people originally. In addition, its history is old. For example, a core part of the mechanical engineering and electrical engineering is an area that has been established that have something immovable. This field is not an exaggeration to say that to form a “beautiful systematic academism”. Then the primary subject of this paper is to propose the concept of “business impedance”. Originally, both of “business” and “impedance” belong to the field of quite different respectively. Business is in “commercial world”, and the impedance is the field of “engineering”. Impedance is a concept in the electrical resistance of the exchanges in electrical and electronic engineering.

In this paper, the objective assessment scale for Deep KANSEI evoked by high quality sound reproduction was investigated in the following experiments.(1) Subjective evaluation of the quality of musical sound reproduced by two different systems. One was a conventional system and the other was the Extra HI System M which could reproduce superior high quality sound by characteristics of precision wave front and planar wave.(2) Measurement of the nasal skin temperature, which is known to be an index of autonomic nervous system activity. Results showed that a greater pleasant feeling seemed to be evoked in the Extra HI System M condition compared to the condition of the conventional sound reproduction system. The long-term decrease of the nasal skin temperature, which strongly correlates to sympathetic nervous activity, showed a correlation with the subjective evaluation implying the possibility of objective assessment scale for Deep KANSEI.

This research was performed in order to clarify the difference between inexperienced person and experts of Ikebana through impression evaluation during the appreciation of arrangement. In this research, not only arrangement themselves, but also photos of them were used for the evaluation. Experimental results indicated that experts could distinguish the difference of arrangements between experts and inexperienced persons even though they watch Ikebanas or photos. However, it is thought to be difficult for inexperienced person. Concerning of the elements of evaluation, that will lead a new research which element appear in which media and the reason that cause this situation.

The purpose of this study was to see whether fashion image terminology in general use is objective as indicator terms having the same effects on consumers in general and to verify its usefulness as a shared language tool. We found variation in the image terms chosen for fashion styles that combine multiple taste elements. Particularly, clear classification proved difficult as multiple terms were chosen for one style, such as “romantic/feminine,” “country,” “girly,” or “elegant.” This may be connected to the terms themselves having lost objectivity as their distinguishing properties have grown ambiguous through widespread use. However, to some degree limited images were accepted for styles having clear distinguishing features such as texture and color. Clearly, sufficient consideration needs to be given to their selection when using objective sensory categories and image terms in fashion as a communication language.

The objective of our studies is the inquiry into data set of the silhouette styling by machine learning for the luxury brands. The computer vision meets the visual fashion for the long years. Recently, computer vision techniques has been employed in algorithm of fashion recognition. But the aim of the computer vision is that the computer vision meets fashion but not that fashion meets computer visions. The luxury fashion consumer expects the favorite own beautiful silhouette styling, not simply the computer pictures. Therefore, silhouette learning of clothing by Neural Network Console needs to meet the personal professional styling knowledge.

In studies of the relationship between relaxation and music, that between brain waves and chords has often been reported despite the fact that “harmony” rather than single chords is listened for in most cases. This raises the problem of whether brain waves measured in subjects differ when harmony is listened to from when single chords are listened to. As a first step toward solving this problem, we propose original experiments in presentation sound, analytical object, and time zone, clarifying that brain waves were influenced by both chords and of chord correlation in harmony.

Tools are indispensable for our daily life. For example, we use knives to process foods or other materials such as resin or wood. Tactile texture sensation which arises when we touch objects directly has been investigated by many groups. However, the sensation caused by the use of tools has not well been explored. In this study, we focused on kitchen knife which we often use for cooking, and evaluated sensation caused by the use of the kitchen knife. In the experiment, we asked 20 participants to cut 12 foods and rate the sensation of each item. Furthermore, we measured force and acceleration to analyze the relationship between sensation and these physical quantities. The result showed that sensation via cutting process can consist of three sensory factors, “ease of cutting”, “density”, and “elasticity”, and these sensory factors relate to the physical quantities.

Japanese Confectionary “Suetomi” is the high level brand in the Kyoto's long-standing companies. This always makes the Japanese sweets a high level in Kyoto, and gets the high appraisal from the parties concerned the master of the tea ceremony , such as “Urasenke.” However, it is possible for their products to be not suitable for the tendency in the age, even if their peculiar value is different from the other companies. Also, there is a possibility that they exposed to the crisis of the business continuance. On the contrary, they offer the products that never betray the customer expectation, and a lot of customers visit their shop from the whole country. In the present study, we present the analysis of Suetomi' management strategy and its strength and differentiation based on the interview of the president Mr. Yamaguchi. After that, we analyze their innovation from the viewpoint of product innovation and Kansei value. Finally, we discuss the design innovation of Kyogashi design based on our studies. In conclusion, Suetomi has a different strong point from the other company as a long-standing company of Kyoto confections and we have understood performing the management strategy which establishes a sustainable competitive advantage using it. Thus, they have performed the design innovation of Kyoto-confections products in the management strategy which is compatible in tradition and innovation, and have created the value of a customer's sensitivity.

In this paper, we investigated how readers perceive the emotions of writers based on the emoticons in their tweets, and clarified the influence of emoticons on emotions. Initially, we conducted a questionnaire and the emotions associated with tweets (with and without emoticons) and the emotions associated with the emoticons were quantified. Multiple regression analysis was then applied to three types of emotion data, and relationships among them were established in the form of regression equations. Finally, the accuracy of the regression equations was estimated for learned and unlearned data, and their effectiveness and robustness were evaluated. The following 10 types of basic emotions were utilized as targets: “Sadness,” “Dislike,” “Relief,” “Fear,” “Excitement,” “Liking,” “Joy,” “Surprise,” “Anger,” and “Shame.”

Mizuhiki is a decorative Japanese cord and used for gift-money envelopes. This study shows our investigation results regarding impressions given by Mizuhiki. The advantages are the clarification for impression structure, the use of an analysis method focusing on two factors, and the development of an interactive visualization tool. First, we got five factors from factor analysis. The factors are gorgeousness, grace, favorability, novelty, and loveliness. We analyzed the relationships between two factors using a robust PCA, thereby we could know some effect factors for increasing or decreasing the impressions belonging to two factors. In addition, we developed a new visualization tool for impressions of Mizuhiki and confirmed the effectiveness via users’ experiments.

Reading is human intellectual activity itself. Therefore, there have been many discussions to clarify this principle for a long time. In recent years, with the advent of electronic books (e-books), which are highly functional books, reading has become more enriching. However, it is less clear what affect this new way of reading is having on the reader. In this regard, we aim to clarify the effects of social reading, the reading of sharing with others using features specific to e-books. We focused on the sharing of reviews, which is common in social reading, and used an experimental system to analyze latent factors and satisfaction. As a result, we found two factors and three clusters constituting potential factors, and four quadrants and three clusters constituting satisfaction.

When we play three-dimensional computer graphics (3DCG) video games of third-person point of view, we can usually control both an avatar and a camera. There are some enemy characters in the CG game world, and we often lose contact with an enemy after the avatar collides with it. In this paper, we propose a camera control system that the view point makes a half turn in a horizontal direction after the avatar collides with the enemy. The camera shows both of the avatar and the enemy from the backside of the avatar. In addition, we propose a representation technique that obstacles make translucent to avoid occlusion when the avatar collides with the enemy. As a result of subjective evaluation experiment, it was shown that the visual effects of the proposed techniques useful to enhance affective impressions. Therefore, we think that the proposed techniques contribute to qualities of action video games.

To improve the safety of autonomous cars, their obstacle detection capability in bad weather must be substantially improved. Haze is a major factor that degrades outdoor images. Although various dehazing schemes have been proposed, a dehazing scheme designed to improve obstacle detection capability has not been reported. Hence, we present a dehazing algorithm that enhances the safety of an autonomous car. This algorithm should be able to work in real time, even using edge computers typically installed as car electronics. Furthermore, this algorithm should work on grayscale images, as systems dependent on color images are often unaffected by environmental color changes caused by factors such as a setting sun. The empirical results showed that our grayscale image-based proposed algorithm is comparable to the results of current cutting-edge methods, and operates in real time.

This research aimed to investigate the effect that smartphones have on brain networks. The Subjects were 23 healthy adults (25.7 ± 5.64 years old). Five sessions with relax, pleasant, unpleasant, pleasant sentences, and unpleasant sentences, stimuli were conducted using a smartphone. The electroencephalography (EEG) was measured soon after the stimuli. The coherence analysis and the complex network analysis were conducted for EEG in the alpha2 wave band. In the stress-free group, the brain shows low network efficiency under relax or pleasant stimuli, and high network efficiency under unpleasant stimuli. In the stress group, there are no differences in network efficiency among any kinds of stimuli. In either group, the network efficiency under sentence stimuli is close to that under unpleasant stimuli. Our study using complex network analysis for the coherence value from EEG revealed that network efficiency of the brain depends on the category of emotional stimuli during smartphone operation.
