Hardware accelerators are being considered as important architectural components in the context of datacenter customization to achieve high performance and low power. Compression has played an important role in computer systems by enhancing storage and communication efficiency in the charge of extra computational cost. In this letter, we present a fully pipelined compression accelerator for the Lempel-Ziv (LZ) compression algorithm. The compression accelerator is verified by using FPGA and fabricated using 65nm CMOS technology.

ITS情報通信システム推進会議の運転支援通信システム専門委員会において筆者らが長年にわたって検討してきた三つの周波数帯の電波を用いたシステムについて,その現状と将来展望を述べる.運転支援に有効な見通し外通信を実現するため,地上波テレビジョン放送のディジタル化の後に利用可能になる700MHz帯の電波を用いた通信システム実現に向けた技術検討や実験解析を通して実験用ガイドラインを作成し,これを様々な実証実験に供した.これらの実験により本ガイドラインの妥当性を検証したが,引き続きこれを国の標準規格にすべく技術を精査している.一方,5.8GHz帯の車々間通信については,国内のETC/DSRC (Electronic Toll Collection/Dedicated Short Range Communications) で用いられている周波数帯をなお一層活用することを目的に技術検討や実験解析を実施してきた.ここでも実験用ガイドラインを基に様々な実証を行い,実現可能性を示した.更に,未利用周波数資源開発が世界的に活発となっている中,日本でも79GHz帯のミリ波の電波を用いたレーダの開発と標準化検討を進めた.これらいずれの電波メディアも,これからの社会において道路交通の安全を第一に,利便・安心を含めた社会基盤を構築するものと期待される.

We propose an appearance-based proficiency evaluation methodology based on fine-motion analysis. We consider the effects of individual habit in evaluating proficiency and analyze the fine motion of guitar-picking. We first extract multiple features on a large number of dense trajectories of fine motion. To facilitate analysis, we then generate a histogram of motion features using a bag-of-words model and change the number of visual words as appropriate. To remove the effects of individual habit, we extract the common principal histogram elements corresponding to experts or beginners according to discrimination's contribution rates using random forests. We finally calculate the similarity of the histograms to evaluate the proficiency of a guitar-picking motion. By optimizing the number of visual words for proficiency evaluation, we demonstrate that our method distinguishes experts from beginners with an accuracy of about 86%. Moreover, we verify experimentally that our proposed methodology can evaluate proficiency while removing the effects of individual habit.

Adding versatile interactions to imperative programming - C, Java and Android - is an essential task. Unfortunately, existing languages provide only limited constructs for user interaction. These constructs are usually in the form of unbounded quantification. For example, existing languages can take the keyboard input from the user only via the read(x)/scan(x) statement. Note that the value of x is unbounded in the sense that x can have any value. This statement is thus not useful for applications with bounded inputs. To support bounded choices, we propose new bounded-choice statements for user interation. Each input device (keyboard, mouse, touchpad, ...) naturally requires a new bounded-choice statement. To make things simple, however, we focus on a bounded-choice statement for keyboard - kchoose - to allow for more controlled and more guided participation from the user. We illustrate our idea via CBI, an extension of the core C with a new bounded-choice statement for the keyboard.

To help elderly and physically disabled people to become self-reliant in daily life such as at home or a health clinic, we have developed a network-type brain machine interface (BMI) system called “network BMI” to control real-world actuators like wheelchairs based on human intention measured by a portable brain measurement system. In this paper, we introduce the technologies for achieving the network BMI system to support activities of daily living.

Neuromorphic systems are designed by mimicking or being inspired by the nervous system, which realizes robust, autonomous, and power-efficient information processing by highly parallel architecture. It is a candidate of the next-generation computing system that is expected to have advanced information processing ability by power-efficient and parallel architecture. A silicon neuronal network is a neuromorphic system with a most detailed level of analogy to the nervous system. It is a network of silicon neurons connected via silicon synapses;they are electronic circuits to reproduce the electrophysiological activity of neuronal cells and synapses, respectively. There is a trade-off between the proximity to the neuronal and synaptic activities and simplicity and power-consumption of the circuit. Power-efficient and simple silicon neurons assume uniform spikes, but biophysical experimental data suggest the possibility that variety of spikes given to a synapse is playing a certain role in the information processing in the brain. In this article, we review our design approach of silicon neuronal networks where uniform spikes are not assumed. Simplicity of the circuits is brought by mathematical techniques of qualitative neuronal modeling. Though it is neither simpler nor low-power consuming than above silicon neurons, it is expected to be more appropriate for silicon neuronal networks applied to brain-morphic computing.

We propose an extended framework of two dimensional neural field with network between distant cortical areas as a model of global brain dynamics, and the models whose geometry of the neural field changes depending on the field dynamics as a model for growing brains. As a characteristic pattern with non-local and network interactions in neural field, pulser and memory are constructed. Possible applications to quantitative measurements of cortical activities of mouse and human brain development are briefly discussed.

本稿では,無線通信の一つであるRFID (Radio Frequency Identification) タグ技術を用いて,生体内非触知領域へのマーキングを行う新しいマーキング技術を紹介する.画像診断技術の進展に伴い数mm 以下の微小な病変部位を発見することが可能になってきている.手術などの処置を行うときには,この病変部位の位置を特定する必要があるが,生体形状の変化や病変部位が組織内部にあるために位置を再度特定することは容易ではなかった.ここで示す生体マーキングシステムは,可視及び触知が困難である生体内部の病変領域の位置情報を,RFID 通信技術を用いて手術時に提供するものである.RFID マーキングシステムを試作し,その効果を実験的に評価した.このことから,この新しいマーキングシステムの効果を明らかにする.

画像評価は銀塩写真,印刷,CRTテレビを中心に長い歴史を通して地道な研究が行われ,今日の高い画質を持つ多様なディジタル画像システムへと発展してきた.画質評価の研究は,主観評価と対応の良い物理評価パラメータを見いだす研究として行われてきたが,いまだに完全なる解明はなされていない.本稿では,銀塩写真,印刷,CRTに代表されるアナログ画像から最近のフラットパネルディスプレイやインクジェットプリンタに至る画質の問題を概観する.まず主観評価と客観評価の基礎から解説し,視覚特性と画質,更に高次な表現パラメータである質感について述べる.また画質と深く関連している疲労についての研究成果など,筆者の研究室で行っている研究を中心に概説する.

It is crucial to promote interdisciplinary research and recommend collaborators from different research fields via academic database analysis. This paper addresses a problem to characterize researchers' interests with a set of diverse research topics found in a large-scale academic database. Specifically, we first use latent Dirichlet allocation to extract topics as distributions over words from a training dataset. Then, we convert the textual features of a researcher's publications to topic vectors, and calculate the centroid of these vectors to summarize the researcher's interest as a single vector. In experiments conducted on CiNii Articles, which is the largest academic database in Japan, we show that the extracted topics reflect the diversity of the research fields in the database. The experiment results also indicate the applicability of the proposed topic representation to the author disambiguation problem.

This paper presents an automatic gain control (AGC) system suitable for 60GHz direct conversion receivers. By using a two step gain control algorithm with high-pass filter cutoff frequency switching, the proposed AGC system realizes fast settling time and wide dynamic range simultaneously. The paper also discusses wide-bandwidth variable gain amplifier (VGA) design. By introducing digitally-controlled resistors and gain flattening capacitors, the proposed VGA realizes wide gain range while compensating gain variations due to parasitic capacitance of MOS switches. The AGC system is implemented in a transceiver chipset where RFIC and BBIC are fabricated in 90nm CMOS and 40nm CMOS respectively. The measurement shows excellent dynamic range of 47dB with +/-1dB gain accuracy within 1µs settling time, which satisfies the stringent requirements of the IEEE802.11ad standard.

Vector Stream Cipher (VSC) is a stream cipher based on the chaos theory. The algorithm for generating stream keys is very simple and the encryption speed is very fast. Some theoretical attacks for VSC have been reported so far since the invention of VSC in 2004. In this paper, we improve the security of VSC and design a new cipher system “Vector Stream Cipher 2.0” so that the theoretical attacks cannot work. We show that the encryption speed of VSC 2.0 keeps more than 85% of that of VSC, and key-stream of VSC 2.0 has good randomness. The main result of this paper is that our proposed VSC 2.0 is shown to have provable security for attacks with linear masking. Because there is few cryptography based on the chaos theory which has proven security, VSC 2.0 is a rare example.
