The 2021 eruption of Fukutoku-Oka-no-Ba (FOB) in the northwest Pacific on 13 August 2021 produced a large volume of pumice that drifted westward for ~1300 km to the Nansei Islands, Japan, and some extent. In February 2022, pumice with similar characteristics to the FOB pumice was deposited along the Gulf of Thailand. The pumice clasts deposited in Songkhla Province, Thailand, were fine-grained with <4 cm in size and rounded. Most of the clasts consisted of clinopyroxene, plagioclase (andesine), and olivine phenocrysts in a vesiculated grey groundmass, with black-coloured spots exhibiting signatures of a basaltic magma. The whole-rock compositions of the pumice are trachytic, with 61 mass% SiO2 and 9 mass% total alkali (Na2O + K2O). The overall characteristics in the pumice from Thailand are similar to those in FOB pumice. These pumice in Thailand were from the 2021 FOB eruption, and drifted >2800 km south-westward across the South China Sea.

リウマチ・膠原病疾患の治療においては,ステロイドや免疫抑制薬に加え,近年,抗TNF-α抗体や抗IL-6受容体抗体などの生物学的製剤が積極的に導入されはじめ,飛躍的な治療効果が得られている一方,免疫不全状態を背景とした日和見感染症の発生頻度の増加が問題となっている.今後も,リウマチ・膠原病診療において新規薬剤による治療成績の向上が期待されるが,それと同時に各種病原体による日和見感染症へも注意する必要がある.

The technique for composing a small subset of global climate models is critical to provide climate scenarios for impact and adaptation studies of regional climate changes. A recent study developed a novel statistical method for selecting a mini-ensemble of five climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 for widely capturing different future projections of Japanese climate across eight atmospheric variables at the surface. However, it remains unclear which mini-ensemble model contributes to efficiently covering the full projection ranges. Here, we rank each mini-ensemble projection around Japan among a full ensemble, showing that the selected five models capture the full ranges without systematic biases, except for relative humidity. Furthermore, we find that the widespread global warming level contributes to covering well the projection uncertainties in the daily-mean, maximum and minimum air temperatures and downward longwave radiation but not in precipitation, solar radiation, relative humidity, or wind speed. As the last four variables are sensitive to various factors, such as large-scale circulation and aerosol-forcing changes, rather than global-mean temperature changes, the model selection method featured here is preferable for capturing the wide future projection ranges in Japan.

In the USA, farm and forest land ownership by aliens must be reported to the federal government. In some states, the restrictions are stricter than in others. By analyzing the code of each state, this study reveals that these states control aliens’ land ownership by limiting their acreage, confining the eligibility of business entities, or checking the citizenship of landowners and that some states prohibit the ownership of public land by aliens. Therefore, most of the farmland in the Midwest and the western states is protected from alien ownership.In the USA, land ownership by aliens is observed mainly on forest land.In order to achieve the proper use of farm and forest land, Japan should replicate the US land management system that controls alien land ownership. One important implication is that farm and forest land should be controlled integrally, not separately.
