This article examines the effectiveness of defining public space in subway stations in Mexico City as media, especially for the purpose of nation-building or Mexicanization. The stations are natural places for people to congregate and many are adorned with murals, objet, replicas of pre-Hispanic ruins and walls, and even expositions. These displays constitute an important example of historical representations of the nation and national culture. The paper examines the function of these public spaces as a vehicle for sending messages to commuters and passengers, and also the processes of self-representation of Mexican people.

Although "Asian American" has been an officially recognized term only since 1968, we have to go back all the way to the mid-nineteenth century when the first wave of Asian immigrants arrived in the United States of America. They brought with them provincial "low cultures" of their home countries. Chinese laborers, for example, needed their work songs to sing during railroad construction, while Japanese in Hawaii plantations created the new blues-like "holehole bushi." Their sense of being "deracine" promoted the creative development of a new Asian American culture. In a historical perspective, we see an interesting overlap in time between the notorious Immigration Act of 1924 which banned all Asian immigrants and the prime time of the American Jazz Age. In the 1930s, Japanese farmers also shared the sufferings of the Joad family in the novel "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. Their harsh life is also depicted in the short stories written later by Nisei writers. They also wrote about their experiences as camp interns inside the barbed wire during World War II. Meanwhile, the East West Players (EWP) of Los Angeles manifested themselves as Asian Americans in 1965, making theirs one of the first groups to support this cause. Many Asian American playwrights made their debuts in the 1970s and the 1980s through the EWP. This helped to open an era of multicultural/multiethnic diversity in the U.S., as major publishers grew aware of the new talent flowering among Asian Americans. Now that today we actively discuss such notions as "diaspora," "transnational" and "hybrid," it is more important than ever to examine how Asian Americans totalling 10, 242, 998 in the 2000 census grew to be a part of the U.S. cultural scene.

Today’s world is characterized by increasing change at all different levels of the society. Talking about change in the modern, advanced society, a special focus can be put on organizations and therefore connected to individuals as well. Shorter product life cycles and an increasing development of information and communication technologies are the basis for many changes. They all form a challenge for an organization’s innovation management. Hence, companies not only need innovation with regard to products or information and communication technologies, but also innovation in thinking and acting - innovation as new social procedures requires a new management of knowledge - especially of the creation of knowledge. However, as regards change at different societal levels which are supportive of innovation and knowledge creation, an important focus is on the issue: how is everything connected? One answer could be: through communication and language. From a constructivist point of view knowledge has to be discussed as a cognitive process of the human being and implies the skills of one’s perception, memorizing, connecting and networking, remembering, active steering of action and active learning. The potential for all these skills can be understood as the basis of individual human knowledge. In this contribution the focus is on the role of communication and language within a knowledge creation process. Furthermore, the impact of language in knowledge creation processes will be illuminated from a systemic point of view. Dealing with complex problems and systems such as knowledge creation processes can be made easier by using fitting interventions. The knowledge creation process can be supported by different models such as e.g. the logical levels of change which help humans to create more awareness for innovations in thinking and acting.
