This paper explains why majority of Filipinos have come to tolerate President Duterte’s violence in the name of “discipline.” His “war on drugs” is estimated to kill almost 20,000 people but nearly 80 percent of Filipinos have supported him. To explain his popularity, previous studies have pointed out such factors as failure of the existing liberal democracy and Duterte’s penal populism. However, these studies do not explain why these issues have come to the forefront only in the mid-2010s although they are the long-standing problems. This paper argues that it is because the neoliberal governmentality has increasingly penetrated into societies and constructed new moral subjectivities among Filipinos as “virtuous citizens” who embrace discipline and diligence in the 21st century.Neoliberalism propagates the doctrine that people’s economic status and welfare are dependent on individual’s responsibility, shifting the blame for misfortunes of lives from the state to individuals. Thus, people are required to discipline themselves to become “virtuous citizens” independent from the state and skillful in the market for subsistence and opportunities. However, despite efforts of self-disciplining, they usually remain helpless to overcome socio-economic inequality and precariousness in the society where the state does not fully function. This shared frustration of disciplined “good citizens” has created a popular resentment against undisciplined “evil others” at the top and bottom: the elites who abuse the state power and resources, and drug users who put danger to their families and communities. It is their resentment that has justified Duterte’s violence.Lower middle class who have emerged in the global service industry in the 21st century mainly constitute the “virtuous citizens.” Based on annual research in Western Leyte, however, this paper argues that struggling poor in rural societies have also developed the moral subjectivities as “virtuous citizens” strengthening resentment against “evil others.” In the localities, the super typhoon Yolanda devastated the feudal coconut agriculture in November 2013. Those who lost the main livelihood have become dependent on resources provided by NGOs, the private sector and the state. Their programs have the neoliberal characteristics to require the beneficiaries to become independent, disciplined and diligent “virtuous citizens” in exchange for resources. While many struggle to live a disciplined life for subsistence, others found alternative source of income in the illegal drug trafficking. The former developed their frustration against the latter and became ardent supporters of the war on drugs in a situation where drugs and violence are perpetrated by a drug lord family.

The Austrian National Library possesses a piano score of potpourri based on Ch. Gounod's opera "Romeo and Juliet" that was arranged by Josef Strauss. The socre was published as No.107 of the series named 'Anthologie Musicale' by the publisher Spina. The background of this potpourri is not known. The French Opera "Romeo and Juliet" by Gounod was premiered in Paris on April 27, 1867 during the Expo in Paris, and was performed in German in Vienna on February 5, 1868. The author found the advertisement of the Strauss's Concert in Volksgarten dated July 24, 1867 in which the "Groses Potpourri aus der Oper Romeo und Julie" by Josef Strauss was announced as a new work. It became clear that this potpourri was actually performed by the Strauss Orchestra.

"Aus der Musikstadt" is the piano collection by ten composers who lived in the 19th century in Vienna, and it was published by Viennese Gustav Lewy in 1892. The composers were Josef Bayer, Alfons Czibulka, Johann Nepomuk Fuchs, Robert Fuchs, Joseph Hellmesberger jun., Karel Komzák jun., Carl Millöcker, Adolpf Müller jun., Johann Strauss jun. and Franz von Suppé. The title of each short piece was designed beautifully and the composer's portrait was also drawn on the side of the title. The score puts prominent composers in order seems to be an musical exihibition. "The International Exhibition of Music and the Theatre" was just held in Vienna in 1892. With the Exibition the concept which treats music as goods was born. In that sense, a score was not only for a performance but also a souvenir. It seems that the collection was related to the Exhibition, because it was not so expensive and good-looking, and it looks like a famous composers' exihibition.

Readers of e-Books read words on electronic paper. We conducted an experiment in which 13 college students read electronic paper and conventional paper for 90 minutes better understand the degree of visual fatigue from such reading. The degree of their visual fatigue was measured before, during, and after reading. Results showed no significant differences in the levels of visual fatigue between the electronic and conventional reading. We conclude that electronic paper is a good reading display that is as gentle to the eyes as conventional paper.

Kwan Yin 観音is introduced from Buddhism to describe “Holy Spirit” in Christian theology by some Asian Women Theologians. Doing theology is a political activity and everyday “praxis” for Asian Women. Kwan Yin is one of the symbols they have created to mediate between their own experience and Christian teachings. Kwan Yin is also believed to be rooted in the ancient Goddess worship that permeates through East Asian countries. This paper will examine the meaning and the role of the Kwan Yin metaphor in the Asian Women’s Theology and how far this symbolic intertextuality may be developed.

Karukan is one of the typical Japanese style confections. It is produced and sold by many companies in Kagoshima district. But, every product seems to be somewhat different in its taste and texture. So, the anthors planed to test consumer's preference as well as its physical properties. In this paper, some physical properties of six "Karukan" samples are given. Moisture, sweetness, propousness, and whiteness were measured. Texture of the samples was also investigated with rheometer, extension meter, and texturometer. Difference in obtained values was considered to have relations directly with the difference in the taste and palatability of the samples. But, on the whole, there was no sample which got good remark all round.

真下耕一監督によるアニメ作品『Madlax』を対象に、仮構作品が鑑賞手順として要求する仮構世界受容の過程において前提とされる暗黙の了承事項が意図的に脱臼させられ、全方位的に仮構的意味構成軸を散乱させる表現が達成されている実態を検証する。本稿はこの企図に基づき前26話中の第1話と第2話までの映像表現の内容の概念化を図り、仮構世界の保持する原型的多義性を反映した映像表現の理念化を図る作業を進めたものである。

我々は、ヘビからカエルに水平伝播した奇妙なLINE転移因子(以降TE-X)を発見した。本研究ではこの水平伝播現象について、(1)水平伝播発生地域の解明、(2)水平伝播の系統学的起源、(3)ベクター生物の特定、を目的とした。世界各地からカエル類29科161種194サンプル、ヘビ類17科125種139サンプル、寄生虫類166サンプルを収集し、各サンプルのTE-XをPCRと次世代シークエンサーを用いて解析した。その結果、TE-Xの水平伝播は、世界各地で複数回生じており、特にマダガスカルでは様々な寄生虫に仲介されて、現在進行形で脊椎動物間TE-X水平伝播が生じている可能性が高いことを明らかにした。

The Omori formula n(t)=K(t+c)-1 and its modified form n(t)=K(t+c)-P have been successfully applied to many aftershock sequences since the former was proposed just 100 years ago. This paper summarizes studies using these formulae. The problems of fitting these formulae and related point process models to observational data are discussed mainly. Studies published during the last 1/3 century confirmed that the modified Omori formula generally provides an appropriate representation of the temporal variation of aftershock activity. Although no systematic dependence of the index p has been found on the magnitude of the main shock and on the lowest limit of magnitude above which aftershocks are counted, this index (usually p = 0.9-1.5) differs from sequence to. sequence. This variability may be related to the tectonic condition of the region such as structural heterogeneity, stress, and temperature, but it is not clear which factor is most significant in controlling the p value. The constant c is a controversial quantity. It is strongly influenced by incomplete detection of small aftershocks in the early stage of sequence. Careful analyses indicate that c is positive at least for some sequences. Point process models for the temporal pattern of shallow seismicity must include the existence of aftershocks, most suitably expressed by the modified Omori law. Among such models, the ETAS model seems to best represent the main features of seismicity with only five parameters. An anomalous decrease in aftershock activity below the level predicted by the modified Omori formula sometimes precedes a large aftershock. An anomalous decrease in seismic activity of a region below the level predicted by the ETAS model is sometimes followed by a large earthquake in the same or in a neighboring region.

Ordinary women in the late Edo period wore different types of kosode for special occasions (Hare) and for everyday use (Ke). However, it remains unclear what types of kosode were worn specifically for each occasion. This study investigates this matter using Morisada Mankou, which is highly regarded as a resource for the clothing customs of that time because of its detailed descriptions of manners and customs of the late Edo period.It is found that the situations of special occasions and everyday use in Morisada Mankou were further divided, producing four broad types (Rei, Hare, Ryaku, and Ke) ; women wore different types of kosode for each of these occasions. It is also found that the material from which kosode were made was considered to be particularly important with regard to the choice of the appropriate types of kosode for the four types of situations. It is clear that high-quality materials such as silk and ramie were used for kosode worn on special occasions; cotton, which is a cheap, durable material, was chosen for kosode worn in everyday life.

This study was conducted to reveal the commonalities and differences between the effects of attachment anxiety and narcissism on adjustment. Therefore, the hypothetical models in which both attachment anxiety and narcissism affect intrapersonal and interpersonal adjustment through senses of acceptance and rejection by other people and partners were examined. Participants were 580 undergraduates in Study 1 and 582 couples aged between their twenties and their fifties in Study 2. The results showed that both attachment anxiety and narcissism increased aggression toward other people and partners as low interpersonal adjustment, and these effects toward aggression were mediated by senses of acceptance by other people and partners. In addition, attachment anxiety increased depression as low intrapersonal adjustment, but narcissism inhibited depression, and these effects were mediated by senses of acceptance by other people and partners.
