A 64-year-old Japanese woman presented with a three-month history of progressive numbness and weakness of the lower extremities. A neurological examination and nerve conduction study indicated sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Since the serum anti-Hu antibody titer was remarkably elevated, paraneoplastic neurological syndrome was highly suspected. A thoracoscopic biopsy of the hilar lymph nodes, in which 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake was obviously increased, revealed pathological findings for small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Subsequently, the patient presented with generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and cerebral MRI showed reversible multifocal brain lesions, considered to reflect paraneoplastic encephalopathy. After two courses of chemotherapy for SCLC, the brain lesions totally disappeared.

We herein report a 68-year-old man with neurologic immune-related adverse events (irAEs) who exhibited nivolumab-induced steroid-responsive progressive ataxia, tremor, and anti-thyroid antibodies. His symptoms matched abnormalities on N-isopropyl-p-(123I)-iodoamphetamine single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and dopamine transporter SPECT. Based on these clinical findings, we diagnosed the patient with a condition similar to the cerebellar type of Hashimoto's encephalopathy with nivolumab-induced anti-thyroid antibodies. Neurologic irAEs can be difficult to diagnose due to their varied clinical courses and lack of specific examinations. Therefore, a comprehensive approach, including assessments of autoantibodies and functional imaging, might be important for the diagnosis of neurologic irAEs.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the typeface of the brand name and the shape of the sake bottle on impression formation on the sake and the estimation of its price. Participants rated their impressions and prices of nine stimuli patterns that were combinations of three typefaces of the brand name (mincho, gothic, and semi-cursive script) and three shapes of sake bottles (slender, shoulder dilated, and stocky). A factor analysis revealed six factors: commonplaceness, unattractiveness, clarity/stability, familiarity, lightness, and gentleness. In addition, the combination of the mincho typeface and slender shape conveyed commonplaceness, the gothic/semi-cursive script and stocky shape conveyed novelty, and the semi-cursive script and slender shape conveyed attractiveness. Moreover, the combination of the semi-cursive script and slender shape conveyed a high price. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the semi-cursive script had low familiarity and the low familiarity led to a high price.

John Searle argues in his seminal paper of fictional discourse that the author of a work of fiction pretends to perform a series of illocutionary acts. He does not make it very clear, however, how one could make a pretended performance of an illocutionary act, e.g. an assertion: he does not tell us what else should be done in order to make a pretended assertion in addition to uttering an assertive sentence. The analysis of truth in fiction put forward by David Lewis may seem to give a plausible account of the meaning of fictional discourse; but his theory also contains the concept of pretence as a primitive notion of its explanatory components. Gregory Currie criticizes the Searlean pretence theory of fiction and advocates a communicative approach to the problem of fictional utterance. He introduces the idea of make-believe instead: the author of a fiction intends that the audience make believe her story. In his communicative approach it seems to be taken for granted that we know what it is to induce someone to make believe something and how it can be carried out by a speaker. Pretence or its equivalent, makebelieve, appears in these theories as a fundamental but unexplained frame of mind that constitutes the essence of fictional discourse. It is suggested that pretence or make-believe may be a primitive equipment of human mind like belief or truth inasmuch as storytelling and playacting can be seen everywhere in human life.

植物エキス発酵飲料(以下FPE)は数十種類の野菜,果物を原料とし,sucroseの浸透圧を利用してエキスを抽出し約半年間,酵母および乳酸菌によって自然発酵させた褐色,粘ちょう性の飲料である.この飲料の投与によりラットの寿命延長効果が示唆されており,アルコール性胃粘膜障害抑制効果を有することやβ-(1,3)glucanが存在することをすでに報告している.FPE中に含まれるglucose,fructose以外の糖質の検索は,60%近い糖濃度の飲料であるため困難であったが,高感度に検出する方法を用いることにより微量に含まれるオリゴ糖類の検出が可能となり,その結果,数種の新規糖質および希少糖が見いだされた.FPEから活性炭クロマトグラフィー,amide-80カラムおよびODS-80Tsカラムを用いたHPLCにより十数種の糖類を単離した.これら糖質について酸加水分解による構成糖分析,MALDI-TOF-MS分析,完全メチル化メタノリゼートのGC分析,COSY,HSQC,HSQC-TOCSY,HMBC等の2次元NMR分析等により構造解析を行った.この結果,5種類の新規糖質を見いだし,それぞれO-β-D-fructopyranosyl-(2→6)-D-glucopyranose(Fp2-6G),O-β-D-fructopyranosyl-(2→6)-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-D-glucopyranose,O-β-D-fructopyranosyl-(2→6)-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-D-glucopyranose,1F-β-D-glucopyranosylsucrose,1F-β-D-galactopyranosylsucroseと決定した.これらの糖質は,発酵熟成中に生成された.新規糖質合成株のスクリーニングを行ったところ植物エキス発酵飲料の発酵熟成中の液から酵母5株(Y-1,-2,-3,-4,-5)を分離した.この株から調製した粗酵素液10 mLをpH 5.0の緩衝液に30%濃度になるよう溶解したglucose,fructose混液100 mLに加え,37°Cで加温した.5株についてFp2-6G合成活性を調べたところ,Y-1株粗酵素反応液中にFp2-6Gと同じ保持時間の糖が検出された.この反応液について各種クロマトグラフィーを行い糖を単離し,構造解析したところFp2-6Gであることが確認された.Y-1株粗酵素によるFp2-6Gの生成量は,上記反応系では非常に少なかったが,反応168時間後においても増加していた.また,基質濃度(glucose:fructose=1:1)の増加にともなって生成量が増加したが,70%濃度が上限であった.
