Knowledge about cabin crew fatigue associated with ultra-long range (ULR) flights is still limited. Current ULR scheduling for cabin crew is therefore predominantly based on flight crew data. Cabin crews’ views on fatigue, and their strategies for mitigating it, have seldom been sought. To better understand the causes and consequences of cabin crew fatigue, semi-structured focus group discussions were held. Thematic analysis was undertaken with data from 25 cabin crew. Participants indicated that the consequences of fatigue are twofold, affecting 1) cabin crew health and wellbeing and 2) safety (cabin, passenger and personal) and cabin service. While the primary causes of fatigue were sleep loss and circadian disruption, participants also identified other key factors including: insufficient rest, high workload, the work environment, a lack of company support, and insufficient fatigue management training. They highlighted the importance of sufficient rest, not only for obtaining adequate recovery sleep but also for achieving a work-life balance. They also highlighted the need for company support, effective communication, and management’s engagement with cabin crew in general. We recommend that priority is given to fatigue management training for cabin crew, which may also enhance perceived company support and assist with achieving a better work-life balance.

Attempts to preserve retro game elements or ‘the classic feeling’ through remixing retro elements with modern ones are not a new method. However, it is an effective preservation method. According to Newman, videogame preservation goes beyond simply preserving hardware. In order to deliver “authentic play (and aesthetic) experiences”, it also necessary to determine what are the most significant, qualitative aspects or properties that make a particular videogame what it is (Newman 2012, 122–23). Part of the success of classic characters like Mario is how often they are reused and reimagined (Suominen 2012, 8). Even if you have never played the original Mario games, you have still likely been exposed to the franchise’s most ‘basic’ elements through their various iterations. However, while the game industry typically aims for continual innovation and reinvention (Newman 2012, 9), the changing market and gaming landscape is allowing for alternative opportunities for remixing retro elements. One notable example includes Mega Man 9, which garnered praise for their gorgeous, realistic graphics. While all three games were made for modern consoles, Mega Man 9 was made in classic retro style, not only to return the series to its roots but also to give players a new story and “the classical feel” (Takeshita 2008). By studying the approaches developers have used, it is possible to study what ‘feeling’ they were attempting to preserve, what elements were considered most essential, how these elements were translated, and what new meanings occur.

Unter Determinismus versteht man oft Praedeterminismus, eine Lehre, nach welcher soziale und Naturerscheinungen durch Gott oder Gesetze vorherbestim mt waeren. Man nimmt an, dass historischer Materialismus in diesem Sinne von der Herrschaft historischer Gesetze bzw. historischer Notwendigkeit predigt, die keinen Raum fuer freie menschliche Handlungen offen laesst.Die materialistische Geschichtsauffassung stellt jedoch keinen Praedeterminismus dar. Sie behauptet zwar die Determiniertheit der Grundrichtung der Geschichte, aber diese bedeutet keineswegs Vorherbestimmtheit der Ereignisse durch sog. historische Gesetze. In der Geschichte herrscht keine solche geheimnisvolle Macht, die sich mit eherner Notwendigkeit durchsetzte. Historischer Materialismus betont, dass es eben Menschen sind, die Geschichte schaffen, weist aber zugleich darauf hin, dass sie es nicht willkuerlich tun koennen, sondern nur auf Grund der objektiv gegebenen materiellen Bedingungen. Die Richtung der Entwicklung einer Gesellschaftsformation wird naemlich in letzter Instanz durch die Entwicklung ihrer Produktionsweise selbst bestimmt. Die Menschen duerfen zwar alles versuchen, um diese zu beeinflussen, sie mit der sog. Sozialtechnik einzelner Probleme ganz abstoppen koennen sie jedoch nicht. Der sich vorbereitende Wechsel der oekonomischen Gesellschaftsformation wird frueher oder spaeter durch unzaehlige Zufaelle hindurch, also mit statistischer Notwendigkeit, verwirklicht. Hiermit hat sich dos Gesetz der Geschichte erst durchgesetzt.Der Verfasser versucht diesen Gesetzesbegriff wissenschaftstheoretisch zu begruenden.

The mean recession rate of Kegon Falls is examined, estimating original location and age. Two locations (LI and LII) at which the waterfall originated are estimated based on the distribution of Kegon lava, while the age of origination is considered to be the same as that of the Kegon lava eruption, i.e., 20, 000 years ago. Two values of the mean recession rate obtained are 0.018 m/y for the case of LI and 0.10 m/y for the case of LII. On the other hand, the recession rate can be evaluated, as an order estimation, using the empirical equation of the authors (Hayakawa and Matsukura, Earth Surf. Process. Landforms, 28, 2003), which shows relationships between the recession rates of waterfalls and the ratio of the erosive forces of rivers to bedrock resistance. The values of parameters used in the index of force/resistance ratio are obtained from existing data and field measurements for Kegon Falls. Substituting them into the equation, the recession rate is calculated to be in the order of 0.009-0.019 m/y. This result suggests that the recession rate for the case of LI is suitable for Kegon Falls.

平成29年度は、遠江国井伊谷と彦根藩等の交流を中心に分析を進めると同時に、新たに確認した井伊谷町中井家文書(個人蔵)の調査を中心に実施した。前者については、とくに近世後期の彦根系譜方の動向に着目し、彼らが井伊谷でどのような歴史調査を実施していたのかについて具体的に明らかにしていった。そのなかで、井伊谷だけではなく、周辺の地域(引佐地方を中心とする)の旧家の協力を得て、遠江井伊氏についての調査が進められていった点が確認されたことには一定の意味があった。つまり、こうした旧家のなかには、地元に史料を残すものがあり(東光院・中井家など)、彦根藩側の史料と地元にのこる史料の双方から裏づけることができた。彦根藩の系譜方による由緒向調査が、遠江国井伊谷周辺(旗本近藤氏領)の地域社会に少なからず影響を与えている点は注目される。後者の点については、新たに確認された井伊谷町中井家文書(引佐町史収録分とは別)の目録作成を進めることができた。この史料群は近世中期の史料が大半を占めており、なかには日記などのまとまった記録もみられ、今後の研究の進展が大いに期待されるところである。とくに、これまでほとんど確認されていなかった中井家が井伊谷の本陣をつとめていた際の史料がみつかった点は重要である。中井家は、近世後期になると遠江井伊氏の歴史研究を進めていくが、その背景にどのような要因があったのか、引き続き、この史料群の調査を進めていく予定である。平成29年度は、ひとまず、こうした研究を進めていくうえでの基礎となる目録作成作業を重点的におこなった。

一般の人々がイメージする貧困は終戦直後の日本に代表される貧困(絶対的貧困)であるという.しかし,今や日本の貧困は質量的に大きく変容した.犯罪との関連で考える場合,貧困を絶対的貧困としてとらえること(金に困って食べ物を盗む)は適切とはいえないだろう.貧困問題が叫ばれる時代,貧困と犯罪の複合的な関係をあらためて問い直すことが必要である.本稿の目的は,貧困と犯罪を主題とする欧米の既存研究を検討し,貧困と犯罪との関連性を探ることである.まず,貧困の概念を整理するとともに,不平等など類似の概念とのちがいをさぐる.そのうえで,貧困と犯罪の理論的関連性を多面的な角度から明らかにする.その結果,貧困と犯罪は関係があるが,直接的因果関係でないことがわかった.しかし他方で,貧困は分岐的に変化しており,他のさまざまな社会的・文化的要因を介して,もしくは相互に触発し合い,犯罪行動の発生に影響をあたえていることが確認された.したがって,さまざまな間接的影響をあわせた,貧困が犯罪にあたえる総合的影響は小さくないようにおもわれる.最後に,犯罪社会学として今後取り組むべき貧困と犯罪に関連した研究課題をいくつか提示する.
