高等学校物理では,力学的エネルギー保存則を学んだ後に運動量保存則を学ぶ。これらを学習後に取り組む典型的な問題として,動くことのできる斜面台上での物体の運動がある。このような問題では,台と物体で及ぼし合う垂直抗力がそれぞれ仕事をすることになり,これらがちようど打ち消し合うことを説明しなければ,力学的エネルギーの和が保存されることに対して生徒は違和感を持つ可能性が生じる。この問題の高等学校での取り扱いについて考察する。

人工衛星を用いた宇宙観測データは,一定の占有期間の後,解析ソフトウェアとともに無償で公開されることが世界的な標準となっている.データが長期間にわたってアーカイブズ化され,世界中の科学者によって広く共有されることにより,数多くの成果が生み出されるのである.それを目的とし,各国の公的機関が多くの予算とマンパワーを費やして構築した「宇宙科学データアーカイブズ」は,人類共通の貴重な知的財産と言えよう.また,宇宙科学データは,他の多くの分野の科学技術データとは異なり,その利用に金銭的な利害や倫理的な問題が絡まない,という特徴がある.その特徴を生かし,最先端の宇宙科学データを真っ先に取得して世界に公開することは,それによって国際社会からの信頼とリーダーシップを勝ち取るための貴重なソフトパワーになりうる.今後,各国が協力して科学データ共有を進め,国と国との間の信頼関係を高めていくことによって,「科学による安全保障」を実現できるようになるかもしれない.

The gaseous detonation driven gas gun was developed for accelerating the projectile to a supersonic speed. The gas gun was simply consisted of two straight stainless-steel tubes. The one was the detonation tube and the other was the launch tube. The detonation tube was 50 mm inside diameter with 2180 or 4280 mm long, and the launch tube was 5 mm inside diameter with 1040 mm long. Chapman-Jouguet detonation wave was initiated in the detonation tube, and the projectile was accelerated in the launch tube via combustion products behind the detonation wave. The spherical projectile of 4.76 mm diameter was made of high-density polyethylene with 52 mg mass. The driver mixture was stoichiometric hydrogen-oxygen premixed gas with initial pressure ranging from 120 to 450 kPa. The gas gun was successfully operated, and the maximum projectile velocity of 1400 m/s was obtained for the conditions that the detonation tube was 4280 mm long and the initial pressure of the driver gas was 450 kPa. The results of the longer detonation tube demonstrated that the projectile velocity was 1.15 - 1.25 times higher than the case of shorter detonation tube. This velocity change of the projectile could be explained by the pressure increase at the inlet of the launch tube by using longer detonation tube. The reason of the pressure increase has a possibility that the length of Taylor wave behind the detonation wave becomes longer for the case of longer detonation tube.

Soil bacterial community structures of six dominant phyla (Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Planctomycetes, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria) and unclassified bacteria detected in tropical Sarawakian and temperate Japanese forests were compared based on 16S rRNA gene sequence variation. The class composition in each phylum was similar among the studied forests; however, significant heterogeneities of class frequencies were detected. Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria were the most dominant phyla in all six forests, but differed in the level of bacterial species diversity, pattern of species occurrence and association pattern of species composition with physicochemical properties in soil. Species diversity among Acidobacteria was approximately half that among Proteobacteria, based on the number of clusters and the Chao1 index, even though a similar number of sequence reads were obtained for these two phyla. In contrast, species diversity within Planctomycetes and Bacteroidetes was nearly as high as within Acidobacteria, despite many fewer sequence reads. The density of species (the number of sequence reads per cluster) correlated negatively with species diversity, and species density within Acidobacteria was approximately twice that within Proteobacteria. Although the percentage of forest-specific species was high for all bacterial groups, sampling site-specific species varied among bacterial groups, indicating limited inter-forest migration and differential movement of bacteria in forest soil. For five of the seven bacterial groups, including Acidobacteria, soil pH appeared to strongly influence species composition, but this association was not observed for Proteobacterial species. Topology of UPGMA trees and pattern of NMDS plots among the forests differed among the bacterial groups, suggesting that each bacterial group has adapted and evolved independently in each forest.

PukaPuCam is an application service that utilizes a camera attached to balloons, to capture users' photo continuously as a third person's view. Later on, users can glance through their photos using PukaPuCam Viewer. PukaPuCam records interactions between users and surrounding objects or people they meet. One of its features is that as balloon experience air resistance, it can change its inclination according to the user's speed. This promotes users' experience of recollecting records not normally taken. Unlike other similar devices, PukaPuCam uses one of the common design people are familiar with - a balloon; make it an interesting application at tourist spot. Since balloons are cute, we aim to give users more enjoyable, delightful experiences.

The accumulation (incorporation) of paprika carotenoid in human plasma and erythrocytes was investigated. A paprika carotenoid supplement (14 mg/day) was ingested for 4 weeks by 5 young healthy volunteers (3 men and 2 women). After 2 weeks of carotenoid ingestion, the carotenoid levels in plasma and erythrocytes increased by 1.2-fold and 2.2-fold, respectively. Characteristic carotenoids found in paprika (capsanthin, cucurbitaxanthin A, and cryptocapsin) were detected in both plasma and erythrocytes. An oxidative metabolite of capsanthin (capsanthone) was also found in both plasma and erythrocytes.

This paper describes the development of cast-in-place concrete piles at the dawn of Japanese foundation technology. The first cast-in-place concrete pile was <i>compressole pile</i> imported from France in 1907. The compressole pile was formed by dropping a hammer on the casted concrete in an excavated hole. Those piles installed at those days still exist in a number of historical buildings during more than 100 years. Following the compressole pile, <i>abbot pile</i> was introduced from the United States in 1910. The <i>abbot pile</i> is same manner to compressole pile, but using a casing tube to make a drilled hole.
