Applications with genetic technologies are now present in numerous health science contexts. This review article summarizes the implementation of these applications from a critical social perspective, examining how public uptake creates complex social issues and regulatory challenges. Focused primarily on English-speaking North America (Canada and the United States), this review summarizes some recent public perception research on YouTube and Reddit on the topics of DNA ancestry testing and non-invasive prenatal testing/screening. More broadly, it highlights how public use, social media, commercial marketing discourse, and regulatory bodies convene around genetic technologies and the tensions and challenges that ensue.

A device which cools a discharge electrode to cause condensation and then electrostatically atomize the condensed moisture by applying high voltage to the discharge electrode has been developed. The electrostatic particulate water generated through the electrostatic atomization by this device has been confirmed to have a peak particle diameter of approximately 20 nm. In addition, simultaneous formation of radicals was verified by ESR analysis. It has been confirmed that this electrostatic particulate water has the effects of deodorization by adsorbing/absorbing odors and deactivation of pollen or mite antigens. An air cleaner equipped with this electrostatic atomization device has been developed. Further, when this device was employed on a hair dryer, it was found to have the effects of increasing the moisture-holding power of hair, giving hair softness and increasing the tensile breaking strength of hair. This is presumed to be due to the abundant moisture given to hair compared to negative ion devices.

To classify trends in research on support provided by healthcare, medical, and welfare institutions addressing elder abuse at home in Japan, we examined 105 relevant papers published within the period between 2006 and 2018. There were 4 types of related institutions: medical institutions, administrative bodies in charge of healthcare/welfare services, community-based comprehensive support centers, and care service offices. Medical institutions tended to detect signs of abuse through their emergency outpatient services, and provide medical support for the elderly with dementia and mental disorders. Administrative bodies in charge of healthcare/welfare services coordinated related institutions and created networks for service use, but their initial response systems to appropriately manage abuse on identifying it had yet to be established. Professionals of community-based comprehensive support centers provided support for residents with self-neglect or refusal of intervention in many cases, and had a sense of difficulty in managing these cases. Employees of care service offices frequently detected signs of abuse, but they found it difficult to judge whether these signs indicate abuse, and accurately recognizing the necessity of consulting/ reporting was their challenge. In order to identify abuse early and appropriately manage it, it would be important for administrative bodies in charge of healthcare/welfare services and community-based comprehensive support centers to start close collaboration with other related institutions whenever detecting signs of abuse.

1ヶ月以上薬物療法を行い効果の得られなかった反復発作性緊張型頭痛(frequent episodic tension–type headache:FTTH)と慢性TTH(chronic TTH:CTTH)に分類し,鍼治療を行い,Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)による自覚症状の評価が50%以上改善したのを有効として,両群の治療回数・期間について検討した.対象は,TTH221例.FTTH82例(男28,女54,平均年齢52.7歳)とCTTH139例(男44,女95,平均年齢50.4歳)である.FTTHの有効率80.1%,CTTHの有効率59.9%であり,FTTH群の方が有意に高値であった(p<0.01).回数・期間はFTTH 2.8回14.9日,CTTH8.9回35.9日であり,FTTHの方が少ない回数で短期間に改善した(p<0.01).FTTHは,鍼治療を3回または2週間継続し,さらにCTTHは9回または5週間継続し効果判定する必要性が示された.

Free-running 5D whole-heart coronary MR angiography (MRA) is gaining in popularity because it reduces scanning complexity by removing the need for specific slice orientations, respiratory gating, or cardiac triggering. At 3T, a gradient echo (GRE) sequence is preferred in combination with contrast injection. However, neither the injection scheme of the gadolinium (Gd) contrast medium, the choice of the RF excitation angle, nor the dedicated image reconstruction parameters have been established for 3T GRE free-running 5D whole-heart coronary MRA. In this study, a Gd injection scheme, RF excitation angles of lipid-insensitive binominal off-resonance RF excitation (LIBRE) pulse for valid fat suppression and continuous data acquisition, and compressed-sensing reconstruction regularization parameters were optimized for contrast-enhanced free-running 5D whole-heart coronary MRA using a GRE sequence at 3T. Using this optimized protocol, contrast-enhanced free-running 5D whole-heart coronary MRA using a GRE sequence is feasible with good image quality at 3T.
