Aging is recognized as a common risk factor for many chronic diseases and functional decline. The newly emerging field of geroscience is an interdisciplinary field that aims to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of aging. Several fundamental biological processes have been proposed as hallmarks of aging. The proposition of the geroscience hypothesis is that targeting holistically these highly integrated hallmarks could be an effective approach to preventing the pathogenesis of age-related diseases jointly, thereby improving the health span of most individuals. There is a growing awareness concerning the benefits of the prophylactic use of probiotics in maintaining health and improving quality of life in the elderly population. In view of the rapid progress in geroscience research, a new emphasis on geroscience-based probiotics is in high demand, and such probiotics require extensive preclinical and clinical research to support their functional efficacy. Here we propose a new term, “gerobiotics”, to define those probiotic strains and their derived postbiotics and para-probiotics that are able to beneficially attenuate the fundamental mechanisms of aging, reduce physiological aging processes, and thereby expand the health span of the host. We provide a thorough discussion of why the coining of a new term is warranted instead of just referring to these probiotics as anti-aging probiotics or with other similar terms. In this review, we highlight the needs and importance of the new field of gerobiotics, past and currently on-going research and development in the field, biomarkers for potential targets, and recommended steps for the development of gerobiotic products. Use of gerobiotics could be a promising intervention strategy to improve health span and longevity of humans in the future.

Over the past several decades, the number of sites, objects, and practices that have been deemed heritage has increased dramatically across the globe and, likewise, the number of heritage studies. Westernlanguage studies of Japanese heritage have focused on questions of identity, power, the state, and tourism. These questions must be understood in terms of heritagization’s transnational nature. Based on Western-lanugage, primarily English, studies, this review examines recent research on Japanese heritage. Much research has focused on museums and castles, but “intangible heritage” and “negative heritage” are also important. Heritage studies is not a coherent research field. Informed by anthropology, history, geography, art history, literary studies, and other disciplines, heritage studies probes what lies behind cultural expressions and illuminates power relations.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) is one of the most important international achievements in life sciences, to which Japanese scientists made remarkable contributions. In the early 1980s, Akiyoshi Wada pioneered the first project for the automation of DNA sequencing technology. Ken-ichi Matsubara exhibited exceptional leadership to launch the comprehensive human genome program in Japan. Hideki Kambara made a major contribution by developing a key device for high-speed DNA sequencers, which enabled scientists to construct human genome draft sequences. The RIKEN team led by Yoshiyuki Sakaki (the author) played remarkable roles in the draft sequencing and completion of chromosomes 21, 18, and 11. Additionally, the Keio University team led by Nobuyoshi Shimizu made noteworthy contributions to the completion of chromosomes 22, 21, and 8. In April 2003, the Japanese team joined the international consortium in declaring the completion of the human genome sequence. Consistent with the HGP mandate, Japan has successfully developed a wide range of ambitious genomic sciences.

"Sika deer problems" in Japan are primarily thought of as pest problems affecting agriculture and forestry, although attention has recently been given to their effects on natural vegetation. In decision making regarding deer problems, the opinions of urban residents have relatively little influence. A problem that must be taken into account when planning deer management programs is the concern that sika deer are destroying natural habitats in Japan and therefore cannot be allowed to increase in number. There is also conflict between agriculture-oriented offices, which target damage control, and conservation-oriented offices, which target biodiversity conservation. Local officers are often influenced by mass communication, which may oversimplify the issue as one of deer population problems. Important information needed for effective deer management includes the proper evaluation of damage, vegetation, and deer habitats. Deer population assessment is of low priority. It is necessary to avoid repeating previous mistakes that considered deer population to be a high priority issue. Continuous monitoring by wildlife specialists for at least five years is essential.

目的:小学校の学級担任を対象に,学級担任が給食指導で参考にしていることを調べ,栄養教諭・学校栄養職員と相談している者の特徴を検討することを目的とした.方法:2014年7月,埼玉県A市の教育委員会を通して,市立小学校全32校の学級担任569名に横断的な質問紙調査を行った.調査項目は,給食指導を行う上で参考にしていること,給食指導で行っている取り組み,給食の喫食時間,学級全体の残菜量,属性であった.結果:解析対象者は456名で,男性143名(31.4%),平均教員経験年数(標準偏差)13.5(12.5)年だった.給食指導を行う上で参考にしていることのうち,選択した者が多かった上位3つの選択肢は「自分自身が家庭で受けた教育」(272名,59.6%),「自分自身が小学校のときに受けた給食指導」(208名,45.6%),「栄養教諭・学校栄養職員と相談」(172名,37.7%)だった.「栄養教諭・学校栄養職員と相談」を選択した者はしなかった者と比較して,女性,給食に関する校務分掌経験がある者,給食が自校式の者が多く,給食指導での取り組み個数が多かった.結論:学級担任は,自分自身が家庭や小学校で受けた教育を参考に給食指導をしている者が多かった.栄養教諭・学校栄養職員と相談している者は4割程度で,給食に関する校務分掌経験がある者や給食が自校式の者などの栄養教諭・学校栄養職員と関わる機会のある者が多かった.

維持期におけるイヌ用レシピを、飼い主へのアンケート調査(n=63)ならびにイヌの手作り食の成書(n=145)から収集した。日本食品標準成分表等を用いて各レシピの栄養素含量を算出し、AAFCO養分基準(2016)の最小値を上回る場合を充足とし、最大値を上回る場合を過剰とした。ほとんどのレシピにおいて、粗タンパク質と必須アミノ酸は充足していた。一方、カルシウム、カルシウムとリンの比、鉄、銅、亜鉛、ヨウ素、ビタミンA、ビタミンD、ビタミンE、リボフラビン、ビタミンB12の不足しているレシピは多かった。また、一部のレシピではn-6とn-3系脂肪酸の比、カルシウム、リン、カルシウムとリンの比、ヨウ素、セレン、ビタミンAやビタミンDが過剰であった。AAFCO養分基準を満たすように手作り食を調製するには、上記の不足しやすい栄養素を多く含む食材を用い、過剰となりやすい栄養素を多く含む食材の使用量に注意する必要があることが示された。
