We review use of multiple landmarks in navigational behavior by humans and nonhuman animals focusing on three important aspects of spatial learning and cognition: Cognitive map, spatial integration, and configuration of multiple landmarks. Animals use multiple strategies for spatial navigation rather than a single strategy and flexibly choose an appropriate strategy in accordance with each environmental condition. Concerning the goal searching in humans, for example, whether it is based on information from multiple landmarks or from just one landmark would depend on the salience of the landmarks. Our conclusion is that it is more important what strategies or spatial information animals choose under what conditions than whether or not they have and use the strategies.

In 1997, two strong earthquakes occurred on March 26 (Mj6.6) and May 13 (Mj6.4) in the northwestern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan (termed the 1997 Northwestern Kagoshima Earthquakes). However no seismogenic faults associated with these earthquakes had previously been recognized at the surface. In this study, we report structural observations from newly recognized fault outcrops located 1.5 and 2 km southwest of the epicenter of the Mj6.6 earthquake. One outcrop consists of the Miocene Shibi-san Granodiorite, which is unconformably overlain by lower sandy loam, lower humic soil, upper sandy loam, and upper humic soil layers that are clearly offset by steeply dipping faults. We measured ~ 40 cm of vertical separation of the contact between the lower sandy loam and lower humic soil layers along a WNW-trending fault, above which the ground surface flexed upward by about 20 cm. The second outcrop is a streambed exposure of the Shibi-san Granodiorite that shows a 30-cm-thick layer of foliated cataclasite along a fault plane, with textural evidence of sinistral slip.

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the relationship between food histological structures and structural components in chicken meat of Nagoya-Cochin (Nagoya Breed). The results obtained were summarized as follows;1) There were no difference in the content of water. crude protein and crude fat in raw dark meat between Nagoya-Cochin and broiler.2) No significant differences could be admittea in breaking strength between two different kinds of raw dark meats: Nagoya-Cochin and broiler on both after the 3hrs. and also the 72 hrs. post-mortem storage at 4°C. On the other hand, there were signicant differences in breaking strength between two different kinds of raw dark meats: Nagoya-Cochin and broiler on both after the 24 hrs. (p<0.01) and the 48 hrs. (p<0.05) post-mortem storage at 4°C.3) The content of hydroxyproline in raw dark meat of Nagoya-Cochin was about 2.6 times that ot broilers dark meat.4) Z-line of the myofibril was more electron-lucent in the broiler dark meat than in the Nagoya-Cochin dark meat after 24 hrs. post-mortem storage at 4°C. The length of the Z-line of the myofibril in the broiler dark meat was sequentially shortened after prolonged post-mortem storage at 4°C, however, the length of Z-line of the myofibril in Nagoya-Cochin dark meat was not shortened after prolonged post-mortem storage at 4°C. One of the factors of hardness of chicken meat depends on the change of structures of Z-line of the myofibril in dark meat after prolonged post mortem storage at 4°C. These results support that the chicken meat of Nagoya-Cochin has better hardness to chew after more than 24hrs. post-mertem storage at 4°C than the broiler meat.

二次代謝経路(天然物経路)は生理活性と新規酵素の宝庫であり,リデザインも容易である。一方で,これを一次代謝に匹敵する馬力で高度に運転するためには,多くの新しい工学的努力を要する。本稿では,筆者たちのテルペノイド合成経路の進化工学の経験をもとに,天然物生合成経路の高効率運転を目指したリデザイン技術のあり方について議論する。

Linezolid (LZD), an antimicrobial agent against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, demonstrates good bone and joint penetration, and is used for prosthetic bone and joint infections. Recently, we observed vomiting in several patients administered LZD. However, there are few reports on the incidence rate of, and risk factors for, LZD-induced nausea and vomiting. In this study, we aimed to verify the relationship between LZD administration and vomiting. Patients administered LZD at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of Hokkaido University Hospital between November 2008 and December 2017 were enrolled in the study. The primary endpoint was the comparison of the vomiting rate between patients administered LZD (LZD group) and those administered other antibiotics (non-LZD group). For the secondary endpoint, to verify the risk factors of vomiting, a univariate logistic regression analysis was performed. In total, 130 patients were included in this study; 77 patients in the LZD group, and 53 in the non-LZD group. Vomiting occurred in 18 patients in the LZD group and 4 patients in the non-LZD group (23.4% and 7.5%, respectively); this was significantly higher in the LZD group. In the univariate logistic regression analysis, LZD administration, gender (female), age ≥65 years, renal impairment (creatinine clearance <60 mL/min) and concomitant use of rifampicin were extracted as potential risk factors of vomiting. The results of this study reveal a possible relationship between LZD administration and vomiting.
