This animal was presented with a large-sized infiltrative lipoma in the abdominal wall that had been noted for 4 years. This lipoma was confirmed by histological examination from a previous biopsy, and the infiltrative features were identified by a computerized tomography scan. The surgical removal created a large-sized abdominal defect that was closed by a combination of latissimus dorsi and external abdominal oblique muscle flaps in a pedicle pattern. A small dehiscence at the most distal end of the muscle flap resulted in a small-sized abdominal hernia and was repaired with cranial sartorius muscle flap 14 days after surgery. The dog was in good general health with no signs of tumor recurrence after 18 months of follow-up.

Testosterone deficiency (Td) has been associated with the metabolic syndrome. Few studies have evaluated this condition in type 1 diabetes (T1D). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of testosterone undecanoate (TU) on insulin sensitivity, glycemic control, anthropometric parameters, blood pressure and lipid profile in patients with Td and T1D. We performed a randomized placebo-controlled multicenter study. Inclusion criteria: a) age ≥ 18 years; b) autoimmune diabetes; c) Td (total testosterone <10 nmol/L or calculated free testosterone <225 pmol/L and low/normal LH; d) ability to sign informed consent; e) comply with the study protocol. Exclusion criteria: a) pituitary tumor, empty sella, hyperprolactinemia, panhypopituitarism or secondary hypogonadism; b) contraindications for treatment with testosterone undecanoate (TU); c) patients who did not agree to sign their informed consent. Six patients were randomly assigned to testosterone undecanoate (TU) treatment and 7 to placebo with the following dosing schedule: baseline, 6 weeks and 16 weeks. Blood test, anthropometric parameters, blood pressure and insulin sensitivity were determined at baseline, 6, 16 and 22 weeks. No differences were observed regarding insulin sensitivity, HbA1c or basal glucose, anthropometric parameters or blood pressure. At 22 weeks, the decrease in total cholesterol was 37.4 ± 27.5 mg/dL in the TU group compared with an increase of 13.2 ± 17.8 mg/dL in the placebo group (P<0.005), and LDL cholesterol concentration decreased 30.2 ± 22.1 mg/dL, compared with an increase of 10.5 ± 13.4 mg/dL in the placebo group (P=0.004). We conclude that treatment with TU in patients with T1D and Td improves lipid profile, with no effects on metabolic control or anthropometric parameters.

Icaritin (ICT), a major component in herb Epimedium brevicornum Maxim., shows beneficial effects for the treatment of osteoporosis and various cancers, and is predominantly metabolized to glucuronidated icaritin (GICT). Although clinical trials of ICT have exhibited good safety and tolerance, the dynamic bioditributions of ICT and GICT have not been reported. In the present study, the chemical structure of GICT was firstly reported, and a reliable ultra-high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method (UHPLC-MS/MS) was firstly established for the simultaneous quantifications of ICT and GICT in rat tissues. The dynamic distribution of ICT and GICT in rat tissues and their pharmacokinetic parameters have been reported for the first time. ICT, GICT and the internal standard coumestrol were separated on a C18 column with a gradient mobile phase of acetonitrile and water containing ammonium formate and formic acid at a flow rate of 0.3 mL min−1. The analytes were quantified by a triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer in the negative ionization mode. The lower limit of quantification values for ICT and GICT were 0.2 and 2 ng mL−1, respectively. Good selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision and recovery were achieved, and no significant matrix effect was observed. The UHPLC-MS/MS was firstly applied to a dynamic biodistribution study of ICT and GICT in rats, following an intraperitoneal administration of ICT at a dose of 10 mg kg−1.

In the gauge-Higgs unification with multiple extra spaces, the Higgs self-coupling is on the order of <italic>g</italic><sup>2</sup>and the Higgs boson is predicted to be light, being consistent with the LHC results. When the gauge group is simple, the weak mixing angle is also predictable. We address a question on whether there exists a model of gauge-Higgs unification in six-dimensional space-time, which successfully predicts the mass ratios of the Higgs boson and weak gauge bosons. First, using a useful formula, we give a general argument on the condition for obtaining a realistic prediction of the weak mixing angle sin<sup>2</sup>θ<sub>W</sub>= 1/4, and find that triplet and sextet representations of the minimal SU(3) gauge group lead to the realistic prediction. Concerning the Higgs mass, we notice that, in the models with one Higgs doublet, the predicted Higgs mass is always the same: <italic>M</italic><sub>H</sub>= 2<italic>M</italic><sub>W</sub>. However, by extending our discussion to the models with two Higgs doublets, the situation changes: we obtain an interesting prediction <italic>M</italic><sub>H</sub>≤ 2<italic>M</italic><sub>W</sub>at the leading order of the perturbation. Thus, it is possible to recover the observed Higgs mass, 125 GeV, for a suitable choice of the parameter. The situation is in clear contrast to the case of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, where <italic>M</italic><sub>H</sub>≤ <italic>M<sub>Z</sub></italic>at the classical level and the predicted Higgs mass cannot recover the observed value.

ユーラシアカワウソLutra lutraが経済成長に伴う環境変化からどのような影響を受けるのか調べることを目的に,工業集積の進む韓国慶尚南道の海岸における本種の生息痕を1982年,1991-94年,2002年および2009年にわたってモニタリングした。慶尚南道馬山地域における糞密度は,1990年代には減少傾向を示したが,2000年代後半には回復傾向に転じた。回復傾向は釜山市などでも見られた。本種が安定的に生息する海域のCODは約4mg/L以下のレベルであった。糞が多く見られたのは,岬の湾口にある磯海岸,海岸近くの小島,河川の人工湖などであり,これらは餌資源の多いことや,隠れ場所として適していることが共通していた。本種は人工護岸のわずかな隙間や,沖合の水産養殖イカダの上をサインポストとして利用しており,人工環境への適応力も備えていた。調査期間中に調査地の陸域における各種経済指標は高い伸びを示したが,湾奥部におけるカワウソが生息しない地域が若干広がったことを除くと,陸域における経済発展や開発は本種の生息に直接的な影響は与えないことがわかった。

Background:Inter-facility transfer for primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from referring facilities to PCI centers causes a significant delay in treatment of ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing primary PCI. However, little is known about the clinical outcomes of STEMI patients undergoing inter-facility transfer in Japan.Methods and Results:In the CREDO-Kyoto acute myocardial infarction (AMI) registry that enrolled 5,429 consecutive AMI patients in 26 centers in Japan, the current study population consisted of 3,820 STEMI patients who underwent primary PCI within 24 h of symptom onset. We compared long-term clinical outcomes between inter-facility transfer patients and those directly admitted to PCI centers. The primary outcome measure was a composite of all-cause death or heart failure (HF) hospitalization. There were 1,725 (45.2%) inter-facility transfer patients, and 2,095 patients (54.8%) with direct admission to PCI centers. The cumulative 5-year incidence of death/HF hospitalization was significantly higher in the inter-facility transfer patients than in those with direct admission (26.9% vs. 22.2%; log-rank P<0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, the risk for death/HF hospitalization was significantly higher (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.22, 95% confidence interval: 1.07–1.40, P<0.001) in the inter-facility transfer patients than in those directly admitted.Conclusions:Inter-facility transfer was associated with significantly worse long-term clinical outcomes for patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI.

The production of tannase (tannin acyl-hydrolase) was demonstrated in cultivated strains of Bacillus pumilus, B. polymyxa, Corynebacterium sp., and Klebsiella pneumoniae, with chestnut bark extract as the sole carbon source. The rapid degradation of the tannin structure was related to the production of extracellular tannase assayed by a new method. Gallic acid was the only degradation product observed with 3 of the strains, but intermediate products were detected in the cultivation broth of Bacillus pumilus. The optimum pH of enzyme activity was 5.5.

We found 6 spontaneous mutant mice with long pelage hair in our ICR breeding colony. The abnormal trait was restricted to long hair in these mice, which we named moja. They were fertile and showed the same growth and behavior as wild-type mice. To investigate the manner of the genetic inheritance of the moja allele, offspring were bred by mating the moja mice; all offspring had long pelage hair. Furthermore, we performed a reciprocal cross between moja mice and wild-type ICR mice with normal hair. All offspring exhibited normal hair suggesting an autosomal recessive inheritance of the trait. The moja/moja hair phenotype was maintained in skin grafted onto nude mice, suggesting that circulating or diffusible humoral factors regulating the hair cycle are not involved in the abnormal trait. The phenotype of moja/moja mice is similar to that of Fgf5-deficient mice. Therefore, we examined the expression of Fgf5 by RT-PCR in moja/moja mice. As expected, no Fgf5 expression was found in moja/moja mouse skin. PCR and DNA sequence analyses were performed to investigate the structure of the Fgf5 gene. We found a deletion of a 9.3-kb region in the Fgf5 gene including exon 3 and its 5’ and 3’ flanking sequences. Interestingly, the genomic deletion site showed insertion of a 498-bp early transposon element long terminal repeat. Taken together, these results suggest that the long hair mutation of moja/moja mice is caused by disruption of Fgf5 mediated by insertion of a retrotransposon.

A simple slip frequency estimation algorithm without a speed or position sensor is proposed, especially aimed at the very low rotor speed estimation. The stator flux is obtained by the simple digital integration from the compensated voltage reference. And the rotor speed is estimated from the slip frequency estimation algorithm, which is useful under any control such as the vector control, the decoupling control, and the slip frequency control. A rotor speed estimation as low as 5 [rpm] is verified through the experiments combined with the voltage command type vector control and the proposed slip frequency estimation algorithm.

Objective To investigate the influence of glycemic variability on the HbA1c level in elderly male patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods The 24-h glucose profiles were obtained using a continuous glucose monitoring system in 291 elderly male type 2 diabetic patients. The relationship between the glycemic variability and HbA1c level was assessed in these patients. Results The mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE) in patients with HbA1c ≥7.0% was significantly higher than in patients with HbA1c <7.0% (4.33±1.67 vs. 3.48±1.46 mmol/L, p<0.001). A simple (Pearson's) correlation analysis indicated that the MAGE was significantly correlated with the HbA1c (r=0.229, p<0.001). Compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of the MAGE was associated with a significantly increased risk of having a HbA1c ≥7.0% after multiple adjustments (p for trend <0.001). Conclusion The glycemic variability had a significant influence on the HbA1c level in elderly male patients with T2DM. The present data suggests that patients with higher glycemic variability might have higher HbA1c levels.

This study aims to evaluate the field performance and the efficiency of ventilation systems in school buildings. Three classrooms installed with ventilation systems in a high school in Seoul were selected as a test bed for this study. The ventilation systems consisted of two types of multi air-conditioning ventilation system and a window type air-conditioning ventilation system. The ventilation performance was measured by the blower door and tracer gas methods as follows: (1) Evaluation of air tightness and air infiltration in the classrooms; (2) Indoor ventilation performance based on the operating condition of ventilation systems; (3) Ventilation performance based on the operating conditions of ventilation systems and air-conditioners; and (4) Local ventilation efficiency and performance based on the operating status of the ventilation systems and air-conditioners. As a result, the ventilation efficiency was measured at 34.8%-97.8% for the duct type of ventilation and 82.6% for the window type ventilation. In this study, classroom characteristics such as high air infiltration low air tightness lowered the ventilation effectiveness. The ventilation efficiency varied based on the location of air inlet and outlet ducts and the existence of furniture. However, local ventilation efficiency was not significantly affected according to the results of this study. The results showed that a ventilation rate of 1000 cubic meters per hour (CMH) or more would be required to maintain 1000 ppm of CO2 concentrations as per IAQ criteria for Korean classrooms.

[Purpose] To investigate associations between vitamin C intake, physical activity, and osteoporosis among Korean adults aged 50 and over. [Subjects and Methods] This study was based on bone mineral density measurement data from the 2008 to 2011 Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. The study sample comprised 3,047 subjects. The normal group was defined as T-score ≥ −1.0, and the osteoporosis group as T-score ≤ −2.5. The odds ratios for osteoporosis were assessed by logistic regression of each vitamin C intake quartile. [Results] Compared to the lowest quartile of vitamin C intake, the other quartiles showed a lower likelihood of osteoporosis after adjusting for age and gender. In the multi-variate model, the odds ratio for the likelihood of developing osteoporosis in the non-physical activity group significantly decreased to 0.66, 0.57, and 0.46 (p for trend = 0.0046). However, there was no significant decrease (0.98, 1.00, and 0.97) in the physical activity group. [Conclusion] Higher vitamin C intake levels were associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis in Korean adults aged over 50 with low levels of physical activity. However, no association was seen between vitamin C intake and osteoporosis risk in those with high physical activity levels.

[Purpose] The present study investigated the effects of squat exercises with and without a variety of tools including a gym ball, wedge, and elastic band on the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis oblique muscles. [Subjects and Methods] A total of twenty healthy subjects with no history of neurological, musculoskeletal injury, or pain in the lower extremities were recruited. All subjects performed four types of exercise (conventional squat exercise, squat exercise with a gym ball, squat exercise with a wedge, squat exercise with an elastic band). [Results] There were no significant differences between exercises in comparison of the vastus lateralis muscle activity. In the squat exercise with a wedge, significantly higher activity of the vastus medialis oblique muscle was found compared with in the squat exercise with an elastic band. [Conclusion] The present study suggests that the conventional squat exercise can be one of the useful interventions for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome.
