For endurance exercise in swimming mice, 1.8% VAAM (Vespaamino acid mixtiure) which has the same amino acid components as hornet (Vespamandarinia) larval saliva, 1.8% casein amino acid mixture (CAAM), 10% glucose, or amino acid mixtures in which the amino acids were varied while maintaining the same molar ratio as VAAM were administered orally to mice. Mice recieving 1.8% VAAM showed significantly longer maximum swimming times than mice receiving other nutrients. Among these nutrients, mixtures of proline, glycine, and essential amino acid mixture (EAAM) from the VAAM component, showed maximum times near those with VAAM. In swimming exercise in mice earring of 0.3g tail weight, mice administered 1.8% VAAM showed lower blood lactate concentrations and higher blood glucose concentrations than mice recieving other nutrients. Mice recieving 1.8% VAAM also had lower lactate concentrations in muscle as well as blood. This suggests that VAAM suppresses lactate production and glucose catabolism during exercise. The effects of hornet larval saliva were stronger than those of VAAM. VAAM therefore showed the major effect of the saliva. The results suggest that VAAM improves physiological condition during endurance exercise. A positive correlation was observed between the blood concentrations of lactate and glucose in exercising mice administered various nutrients (r=0.779) . This suggests metabolic equilibration between glucose and lactate during exercise. A positive correlation (r=0.507) was also found between the maximum swimming time and blood glucose concentration. Maximum swimming times were highest at low (Ca. 2.5 mMol) and high (Ca. 4.0 mMol) blood lactate concentrations in high blood glucose concentrations. These facts support that glucose homeostasis is important in prolonged exercise.

Cytogenetics studies on Astyanax sp B, an endemic species of the Iguaçu River (Paraná, Brazil) were carried out. The specimens showed a standard diploid number of 2n=50 chromosomes with a karyotype consisting of 6 metacentric, 24 submetacentric, 6 subtelocentric and 14 acrocentric chromosomes. In addition to the basic karyotype, all the specimens presented 1–2 supranumerary or B chromosomes in mitotic metaphases. Three morphological types of B chromosomes have been identified in population under analysis: an acrocentric-type microchromosome; a metacentric macrochromosome smaller than the first pair of the normal karyotype complement; a small submetacentric chromosome. C-band analysis shows discrete markings in the centromeric regions of various chromosomes which contrast with strongly heterochromatic blocks in the telomeric regions of the long arms of chromosome pairs 20, 21 and 22 (acrocentric). Heterochromatic block-sized heteromorphism has been among homologues of pair 20. The chromosome characterisitics of Astyanax sp B indicate similarity with other species of the genus Astyanax with regard to karyotypic macrostructure, distribution of constitutive heterochromatin (C-band pattern) and occurrence of B chromosomes. Some aspects related B chromosomes in this species are discussed.

A 41-year-old nurse was referred to our hospital with a fever and disturbed consciousness. She tested positive for influenza antigen. CT and MRI findings revealed low density and intensity areas in the right occipital and lateral lobes with remarkable brain edema, which led to a diagnosis of influenza encephalopathy. Influenza A antibodies in the serum were below the detection limit despite the patient receiving previous vaccination three months earlier. A PCR analysis revealed that the influenza HA gene was classified into clade 3C.2a, subclass AH3N2. The present case indicates the potential development of encephalopathy in adults under certain conditions.

A class of Streptomyces aromatic polyketide antibiotics, the benzoisochromanequinone (BIQs) antibiotics all show trans stereochemistry at C-3 and C-15 in the pyran ring. The opposite stereochemical control is found in actinorhodin (3S, 15R, ACT) from S. coelicolor A3(2) and dihydrogranaticin (3R, 15S, DHGRA) from S. violaceoruber Tu22. A common bicyclic intermediate, which is produced by the early biosynthetic genes encoding a type II minimal polyketide synthase, C-9 ketoreductase (KR), aromatase, and cyclase, was postulated to undergo stereospecific reduction to provide either (S)-DNPA or (R)-DNPA. In the ACT biosynthesis, RED1 encoded by act VI-ORF 1 was proved to reduce C-3 of bicyclic intermediate to determine the 3-(S)-configuration of DNPA. Although the homolog of act VI-ORF 1 was not found in the gra cluster, RED2 was suggested to reduce bicyclic intermediate. An explored RED-2 coding gene, gra-6, was subjected to updated BLAST analysis. The gra-6 product, a putative short-chain alcohol dehydrogenase, has virtually no sequence similarity with RED1. Functional analysis of RED1/2 was made from the following points. 1) Introduction of gra-ORF 6 and gra-ORF 5 under translational coupling (gra-5+6) into the act VI-ORF 1 mutant, S. coelicolor B22, led to ACT-like pigmentation, demonstrating gra-ORF 6 to complement the function of act VI-ORF 1 possibly under unnatural stereochemical control. 2) Combinations of the ketoreductase genes were co-expressed with the early biosynthetic genes required for the bicyclic intermediate formation. gra-ORF6 was essential to produce (R)-DNPA in DHGRA biosynthesis. gra-5+6 led to the most efficient production of (R)-DNPA, implying a possible unique cooperative function as RED2. 3) A series of synthetic analogues was applied to the biotransformations based on ketosynthase-deficient recombinants of S. coelicolor carrying either RED1 or RED2. In all cases for RED1, the β-keto ester substrates were reduced with good to excellent enantioselectivity. However, the simpler substrates were not accepted by RED2, indicating the significant difference in substrate specificity between the two reductases. 4) 3D structures of RED1 and RED2 were predicted based on homology modeling (FAMS) using the templates, L-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase from human heart (for RED1) and tropinone reductase II (for RED2). Catalytically key amino acid residues were revealed for the both enzymes. 5) RED1 and RED2 were overexpressed in E. coli, and in vitro assay system were successfully established. Optimization of the system, purification of both enzymes and site directed mutagenesis to the suggested key residues are in progress.

There are many environmental, occupational and medical substances that cause dysregulation of autoimmunity. Among these substances, the effects and causative mechanisms of silica particles and asbestos fibers are discussed in this review. Many epidemiological studies have shown a significant association between silica exposure and the occurrence of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic sclerosis (SSc), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-related vasculitis. Although the importance of NALP3 inflammasome as the initial immune reaction against silica particles has been recognized, the processes that form the various autoimmune diseases in silica-exposed patients remain unclear. Silica can activate various immune cells and cause an unbalance of regulatory T cells, responder T cells and T helper 17 cells, which might be key factors in understanding the silica-induced autoimmune alteration. In contrast, asbestos exposure shows a smaller association with autoimmune diseases. However, interesting findings have been reported regarding anti-endothelial and mesothelial cell antibodies detected in asbestos-exposed patients. Further investigations may contribute to elucidation of the mechanisms involved in environmental factor-induced modification of autoimmunity.

2015年7月21日,韓国の朴大統領は,「公共」,「労働」,「金融」および「教育」などの4大部門における改革を2015年下半期の国政運営の核心的課題として宣言し,同年8月20日,国民向けの談話を発表した。この政府の方針を巡っては,当初から多くの批判や指摘が絶えず,今に至るまでに具体的な成果はみられていないといえる。とりわけ,労働部門改革に注目すれば,すでに,「通常賃金・勤労時間の短縮・定年延長」などの3大原案を巡り,いわゆる大統領直属の経済社会発展労使政委員会(経済社会発展労使政委員会法(法律第8852号)により設立された大統領所属の諮問委員会であり,1998年1月15日,第1期労使政委員会が開かれ,主に,労働政策とこれと関連する経済・社会政策などを協議することを目的とし,大統領に対する政策諮問の役割をも遂行する)では,経済界と労働界の意見の隔たりがあまりにも大きく,政界でも野党からの強力な反発が続き,課題解決への展望は決して明るくない。朴大統領は,「労働市場,雇用市場の構造改善のために推進している定年延長と賃金ピーク制など賃金体系の改変をいち早く終えなければならず,労働改革は,つまり働く場の維持及び新しい仕事の創出,とりわけ青年の働く場の創出にとって要となるから…」とした。本稿では,戦後の韓国経済の成長に伴って変化してきた労働市場における環境変化を振り返りながら,とりわけ,現状における労働市場の最大の課題といえる若者の失業率問題に焦点を当て,その実態把握と,問題発生の背景にどのような要因があるのかについて分析することを目的とする。

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to examine the the effects of hippotherapy on gait and balance ability in patients with stroke. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty stroke patients were randomly divided into a hippotherapy group and a treadmill group and they conducted exercise for eight weeks. [Results] Berg Balance Scale score, gait velocity, and step length asymmetry ratio were significantly improved in the group receiving hippotherapy training. However, in the group receiving treadmill training, only step length asymmetry ratio was significantly improved. In the comparison between the hippotherapy group and treadmill group, there was no significant difference in Berg Balance Scale score, but a significant difference was found in gait velocity and step length asymmetry ratio. [Conclusion] The results of this study indicated that hippotherapy is a helpful treatment for stroke patients.

Based on the 4MB 3.5" Perpendicular Recording/Longitudinal Recording Floppy Disk Drive with a track density of 270 TPI, we further developed a 3.5" Perpendicular Recording Floppy Disk Drive demonstrating the potential to realize a capacity of more than 8MB capacity. The key technology included: (1) a Perpendicular Recording/Longitudinal Recording Floppy Head which was without erase element and helped realize the capacity of 4MB-8MB under the condition of without using servo system for tracking. (2) The GAL Technology to expand the Application-Specific Integrated Circuits. (3) The improvements of the read write channel.

Because of rapid population aging, it is necessary to design interfaces that can decrease cognitive workload. The design implications and evaluation criteria for creating such senior-friendly or disability-friendly interfaces need to be established. One element related to memory function that can be manipulated in an interface is visuospatial working memory. However, there are few reports regarding the relationship between visuospatial working memory volume and age. In this paper, we aim to clarify how visuospatial working memory volume changes across the lifespan. We implemented a gamified application named VisuoSpats, which is based on the visual pattern span test, to measure visuospatial memory. The introduced gamification elements included points, leaderboards, and feedbacks. Three hundred and sixty-nine individuals aged 2 to 92 years old participated in this study. The results indicate that the median number of cells memorized was 7.0 (interquartile range: 5.0-9.0) across all age groups. Moreover, the number of cells memorized tends to increase as age increases until the age range of 21-25 years, and then decreases gradually with increasing age. Based on the comments by teenagers or seniors, the effective gamification elements of VisuoSpats could be competition elements such as points and ranking, or diagnostic factors, respectively.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an intensive sensorimotor stimulation program on the motor function of chronic hemiparetic patients. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were three chronic stroke patients whose sensory function was intact, who had Mini-Mental State Examination − Korean version scores of more than 26, and manual muscle test scores of more than fair for affected shoulder and elbow. The research design was an A-B single subject experimental design. The intervention consisted of 4 baselines phase sessions, and 12 sensorimotor stimulation phase sessions. The sensory and motor stimulation was performed for 30 minutes per session. The efficacy of the program was evaluated by the Box and Block test, and the 10-second test. [Results] Box and Block test and 10-second test scores of each subject improved after the 8 weeks intervention. [Conclusion] The intensive sensorimotor stimulation program for the upper extremity may be an efficacious method for improving the function of the affected limb of chronic stroke patients.

Mosquitoes pose a major threat to human health as they spread many deadly diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis and Zika. Identification and use of novel molecular tools are essential to combat the spread of vector borne diseases. Genome editing tools have been used for the precise alterations of the gene of interest for producing the desirable trait in mosquitoes. Deletion of functional genes or insertion of toxic genes in vector mosquitoes will produce either knock-out or knock-in mutants that will check the spread of vector-borne diseases. Presently, three types of genome editing tools viz., zinc finger nuclease (ZFN), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALEN) and clustered regulatory interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR associated protein 9 (Cas9) are widely used for the editing of the genomes of diverse organisms. These tools are also applied in vector mosquitoes to control the spread of vector-borne diseases. A few studies have been carried out on genome editing to control the diseases spread by vector mosquitoes and more studies need to be performed with the utilization of more recently invented tools like CRISPR/Cas9 to combat the spread of deadly diseases by vector mosquitoes. The high specificity and flexibility of CRISPR/Cas9 system may offer possibilities for novel genome editing for the control of important diseases spread by vector mosquitoes. In this review, we present the current status of genome editing research on vector mosquitoes and also discuss the future applications of vector mosquito genome editing to control the spread of vectorborne diseases.

This study analyzes how changes in overall wage inequality and gender-specific factors affected the gender wage gap in Chinese and Indian urban labor markets in the 1990s and 2000s. Analysis of micro data present that contrasting evolutionary patterns in gender wage gap emerged over the period, showing a widened wage gap in China but a dramatically reduced gap in India. In both countries, female workers’ increased skill levels contributed to reducing the gender wage gap. However, increases in observed prices of education and experience worked unfavorably for high-skilled women, counterbalancing their improvement in labor market qualifications. Decomposition analyses show that China’s widened gap was attributable to gender-specific factors such as deteriorated observable and unobservable labor market qualifications and increased discrimination, especially against low- and middle-skilled female workers. For India, gender-specific factors and relatively high wage gains of low- and middle-skilled workers reduced the male–female wage gap.
