A 12-year-old, spayed female Schnauzer presented with constipation. A mass was observed in the pelvic cavity, and metastasis was not identified. Mass resection was performed through celiotomy with pubic osteotomy, and hemangiosarcoma was diagnosed. At 10 weeks post-operatively, the patient died of multiple metastasis. Primary intrapelvic hemangiosarcoma is rare in dogs.

Objectives: Although using mental health services is an effective way to cope with work-related stressors and diseases, many employees do not utilize these services despite their improvements in recent years. The present study aimed to investigate the interaction effects of workplace climate and distress on help-seeking attitudes, and elucidate the reasons for mental health service underutilization in Japan.Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to 650 full-time male Japanese employees. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to investigate interaction effects of workplace climate and distress on help-seeking.Results: Results showed that the association between workplace climate and help-seeking attitudes differed depending on employee distress level. For employees experiencing low levels of distress, openness to seeking treatment increased with a higher evaluation of the mental health services available at the workplace. However, the same did not hold true for employees experiencing high levels of distress. Instead, openness to seeking treatment decreased with perceived risk for career disadvantage for high distress employees. Additionally, negative values for seeking treatment in highly distressed employees decreased only when services were perceived as valuable, and the risk to their career was perceived as low.Conclusions: Overall, these findings indicate that distress distorts the perception of social support, which may lead to underutilization of available services. Assessing employees' distress levels and tailoring adequate interventions could facilitate help-seeking in male employees.

Hong Kong is one of the most efficient cities in the world. Its have a reputation for being workaholics and high stress burden upon employees. Knowing that a caring employer can adopt appropriate family-friendly policies and practices (FFPP) to help employees achieve work-family balance. There are several successful examples in implementing these policies in western countries. However, does Hong Kong laissezfaire economic suitable for adopting such FFPP? "Economics and Wellbeing Research" of HKSYU conducts a survey to focus on determining the factors influencing the launch of FFPP as well as its relationship with workers' quality of life in Hong Kong.

Reducing dietary calorie density (CD) is useful in body weight management. This study investigates the association between dietary habits and preferences for different CDs. We conducted a randomized crossover study of 232 healthy subjects who consumed packed lunch boxes containing a control, high-meat and low-rice, low-vegetable, medium-fat and low-vegetable, high-fat, and high-fat and low-vegetable meals over six sessions. The subjective levels of sensory properties were assessed over time using a visual analog scale and the area under the curve. Subjects were assessed for dietary habits using a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ) and were divided into two groups based on a daily fat energy ratio ≥ 25% (high fat [HF], n=116) and < 25% (normal, n=116) that was matched for age, body mass index, and sex ratio. Our findings indicate that the desire for sweetness was higher in the HF group than in the normal group, regardless of the meals consumed. Particularly, among the 500-kcal low-CD meals, a high-protein meal provided greater fullness and satisfaction and lower prospective consumption in the HF group than in the normal group. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility, and genetic relatedness of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica and Campylobacter spp. in poultry meat, and to analyze the association of genetic types of these bacteria with their geographical distribution and antimicrobial resistance profiles. Fifty-four and 71 of 100 samples were found to be contaminated with Salmonella and Campylobacter, respectively. Nine Salmonella serotypes were found, including S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Infantis (33%), Schwarzengrund (12%), Manhattan (9%), and others. Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli were detected from 64 (64%) and 14 (14%) samples, respectively. S. enterica subsp. enterica exhibited a high frequency of resistance against tetracycline (78.3%) and streptomycin (68.3%). C. jejuni and C. coli isolates were resistant to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (90.5%), nalidixic acid (47.3%), ampicillin (45.9%), and ciprofloxacin (40.5%). Cluster analysis was performed for the Salmonella isolates using PFGE and for the Campylobacter isolates with PFGE as well as comparative genomic fingerprinting. which were combined with the drug-resistance data to analyze with respect to the locations in which the poultry meat was produced. This analysis revealed that C. jejuni strains with a particular genotype and antimicrobial resistance profile are spreading in specific areas in Japan.

The establishment of the School of Health Sciences(SHS), University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) inLeyte in 1976 was based on the ideas of socially-concernedCollege of Medicine, UPM faculty who were alarmed by thebrain drain and the mal distribution of health manpower in the Philippines. SHS aims to produce a broad range of health manpower who serves the rural communities. It also designs and tests program models for health manpower developmentthat can be replicated in various parts of thePhilippines and in other countries as well.Its unique feature is the step-ladder curriculum---the only one of its kind in the Philippines---which is designed to meet the needs of the rural communities. Here, instead ofthe usual approach to health science education, the trainingof a broad range of health manpower from the barangay(village) health worker to the medical doctor is integratedin a single, sequential, and continuous curriculum. In the gauge-Higgs unification with multiple extra spaces, the Higgs self-coupling is on the order of <italic>g</italic><sup>2</sup>and the Higgs boson is predicted to be light, being consistent with the LHC results. When the gauge group is simple, the weak mixing angle is also predictable. We address a question on whether there exists a model of gauge-Higgs unification in six-dimensional space-time, which successfully predicts the mass ratios of the Higgs boson and weak gauge bosons. First, using a useful formula, we give a general argument on the condition for obtaining a realistic prediction of the weak mixing angle sin<sup>2</sup>θ<sub>W</sub>= 1/4, and find that triplet and sextet representations of the minimal SU(3) gauge group lead to the realistic prediction. Concerning the Higgs mass, we notice that, in the models with one Higgs doublet, the predicted Higgs mass is always the same: <italic>M</italic><sub>H</sub>= 2<italic>M</italic><sub>W</sub>. However, by extending our discussion to the models with two Higgs doublets, the situation changes: we obtain an interesting prediction <italic>M</italic><sub>H</sub>≤ 2<italic>M</italic><sub>W</sub>at the leading order of the perturbation. Thus, it is possible to recover the observed Higgs mass, 125 GeV, for a suitable choice of the parameter. The situation is in clear contrast to the case of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, where <italic>M</italic><sub>H</sub>≤ <italic>M<sub>Z</sub></italic>at the classical level and the predicted Higgs mass cannot recover the observed value.

研究では,先進運転支援システム (ADAS) のためのコンパクトなハードウェアに実装可能で,リアルタイム (15~30fps) 処理可能な,速度標識認識処理における数字認識部分のハードウェア向けアルゴリズムと FPGA アーキテクチャの開発である.提案手法では,まず入力画像から速度標識候補領域の検出を行い,簡単な算術・論理演算で抽出可能な特徴量を用いることにより,FPGA 実装によるリアルタイムな速度標識認識を可能にした.また,認識精度については,昼間の標識で 99%以上,夜間 (雨天の夜間を含む) の難しい場合に対しても 94.2%の認識率を達成した.In this paper, we propose a hardware-oriented speed traffic-sign recognition algorithm and its FPGA architecture in which real-time processing is possible for Advanced Driving Assistant System (ADAS). The proposed algorithm performs the sign detection using binary images, which are converted from a grayscale input images. The proposed method enables real-time speed sign recognition for FPGA implementation by using run lengths of pixel within a candidate region and black and white pixel-histograms in the region which are easily calculated by simple arithmetic and logical operations. From the experimental results, the proposed method achieves the recognition accuracy up to more than a 99 % in daytimes and up to a 94.2 % at nights including rainy night situations.

Background: Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) is a protein related to various diseases. Aberrant SYK expression often causes the progression and initiation of several diseases including cancer and autoimmune diseases. Despite the importance of inhibiting SYK and identifying candidate inhibitors, no clinically effective inhibitors have been reported to date. Therefore, there is a need for novel SYK inhibitors. Results: Candidate compounds were investigated using in silico screening by chooseLD, which simulates ligand docking to proteins. Using this system, known inhibitors were correctly recognized as compounds with high affinity to SYK. Furthermore, many compounds in the DrugBank database were newly identified as having high affinity to the ATP-binding sites in the kinase domain with a similar affinity to previously reported inhibitors. Conclusions: Many drug candidate compounds from the DrugBank database were newly identified as inhibitors of SYK. Because compounds registered in the DrugBank are expected to have fewer side effects than currently available compounds, these newly identified compounds may be clinically useful inhibitors of SYK for the treatment of various diseases.

The Cuban solenodon (Solenodon cubanus) is one of the most enigmatic mammals and is an extremely rare species with a distribution limited to a small part of the island of Cuba. Despite its rarity, in 2012 seven individuals of S. cubanus were captured and sampled successfully for DNA analysis, providing new insights into the evolutionary origin of this species and into the origins of the Caribbean fauna, which remain controversial. We conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses of five nuclear genes (Apob, Atp7a, Bdnf, Brca1 and Rag1; total, 4,602 bp) from 35 species of the mammalian order Eulipotyphla. Based on Bayesian relaxed molecular clock analyses, the family Solenodontidae diverged from other eulipotyphlan in the Paleocene, after the bolide impact on the Yucatan Peninsula, and S. cubanus diverged from the Hispaniolan solenodon (S. paradoxus) in the Early Pliocene. The strikingly recent divergence time estimates suggest that S. cubanus and its ancestral lineage originated via over-water dispersal rather than vicariance events, as had previously been hypothesised.

A new method is described for printing nucleotide sequences by assembling square microcells, representing nucleotides, into blocks, and by differentiating micro-cells following a color code, a gray scale, etc., corresponding to the four types of nucleotides. By printing micro-cells, whose sides are close to 250μm, using a laser printer, the complete sequence of a genome of the size close to 1M bases can be printed in the space of full size of A4, without loosing any original information. By enlarging the print using a magnifying glass or a photo-copy machine, the original sequence can be reconstituted, visually or mechanically. Overall and regional characteristics of genomes (e.g. distribution of gene-coding regions) can be analyzed using a plot of this type. The scheme for classifying micro-cells can be modified, in order to present different types of information such as distribution of purines and pyrimidines or that of different types of dinucleotide combinations through the genome.

Background:The protective function of regulatory T cells (Treg) has been identified in experimental atherosclerosis, but the contribution of Tregto the pathogenesis of human coronary artery disease (CAD) remains poorly understood. We investigated Tregand regulatory T-cell/effector T-cell (Treg/Teff) ratio in peripheral blood samples from CAD patients using a new strategy for precise identification of Treg.Methods and Results:Peripheral blood samples were collected from 73 stable CAD patients (55 middle-aged CAD patients and 18 old CAD patients) and 64 controls (47 middle-aged controls and 17 young controls). CD3+CD4+FoxP3+T cells were divided into 3 fractions: CD45RA+FoxP3lowresting Treg(Fr1), CD45RA–FoxP3highactivated Treg(Fr2), and CD45RA–FoxP3lownon-Treg(Fr3). CAD patients had lower percentages of Fr1 and Fr2 and higher percentages of Fr3 and CD45RA–Foxp3–Teff(Fr4+5) within the CD3+CD4+T-cell population compared to age-matched controls. Treg/Teffratio (Fr1+2/Fr3+4+5) in CAD patients was also markedly lower than in controls (middle-aged control, 0.17±0.09 vs. middle-aged CAD, 0.10±0.05; P<0.001). The percentage of CD4+CD28nullT cells within the CD4+T-cell population was negatively correlated with Treg/Teffratio, excluding CD4+CD28nullT cells <0.3% (r=–0.27, P<0.05). High-sensitivity C-reactive protein was also negatively correlated with Treg/Teffratio (r=–0.22, P<0.05).Conclusions:CAD patients had reduced Tregand Treg/Teffratio compared to healthy controls. We investigated the neuritogenic effects of Tremella fuciformis (TF), which has been valued in traditional Chinese medicine as a remedy with nutritive and tonic actions, on PC12h cells. The cognitive improving effects of TF on scopolamine-induced (2 mg/kg, s.c.) amnesia in rats were also evaluated with using the Morris water maze task and by performing choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunohistochemistry. The water extract of TF (0.01—1 μg/ml) promoted neurite outgrowth of the PC12h cells in a dose dependent manner. TF was highly efficient at the concentration range of 0.1—1 μg/ml. Oral daily treatment with TF (100 or 400 mg/kg) for 14 consecutive days significantly reversed the scopolamine-induced deficit in learning and memory, and it alleviated decrease in cholinergic immunoreactivity induced by scopolamine in the medial septum and hippocampus. The results demonstrate that the promotion of neuritogenesis in neuronal culture cells by TF water extract is related with its activity for improving the performance of rats on a spatial learning and memory task. Moreover, the impairments of spatial learning and memory may be attributable to the decrease in activation of the septohippocampal cholinergic system and that TF ameliorated learning and memory deficits partly through its increasing the central cholinergic activity. Therefore, TF could represent a potentially useful agent that is able to improve the function of impaired cognitive processes.

[Purpose] This study investigated whether a shoulder reaching exercise was beneficial for restoring the standing balance of patients with hemiplegia after stroke. [Subjects and Methods] There were 13 subjects in the experimental group (EG) and 14 subjects in the control group (CG), all with hemiplegia following stroke. The shoulder reaching exercise intervention was performed by the EG and conventional physical therapy was administered to the CG for 30 minutes, 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Virtual reality (RM, BioRescue −AP 1153, France) was used as an assessment tool. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 18 (Statistical Package for the Social Science). [Results] After the intervention, the EG showed significant differences in the distances moved in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions. The length and velocity were reduced after the intervention in both the EG and the CG. There were significant differences in the distances moved in the north, south and west directions between the groups. The sway path lengths of the subjects in the Romberg test were reduced under both the eyes open and closed conditions in the EG. There was no significant variation in sway velocity in the EG and the CG. [Conclusion] The shoulder reaching exercise had beneficial effects on the distances moved in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions.

Double-flowered Eustoma, a popular cut flower, sometimes shows nonuniform coloration of its petals when harvested at the flower bud stage. At the tips of the petals, pale greenish areas remain after the flowers open. This considerably reduces the value of cut Eustoma. In this study, to identify appropriate postharvest treatments leading to normal coloration of these cut flower buds, we investigated the influence of harvest stage, temperature, sugar, and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on petal coloration using the Eustoma ‘Voyage (Type II) Blue’. Investigation of the harvest stage, which was compared at three flower bud stages (STG2, 3, and 4), revealed that detached pale greenish flower buds (STG2 and 3) had a high probability of becoming nonuniformly colored flowers, so these stages were used for subsequent investigations. Temperature, which was investigated at 20, 25, 30, and 35°C, did not show any influence on petal coloring. Investigation of sugar treatments, such as 1% or 3% glucose or sucrose, also showed no influence. However, MeJA treatment led to a significant difference in petal coloration. The nonuniform coloration of petals was reduced by continuous exposure to MeJA vapor. Furthermore, we performed shorter MeJA treatments, such as for 1 or 2 days after harvesting, which reduced the nonuniform coloration as well as continuous MeJA exposure. To evaluate the effect of MeJA treatment on petal coloration, we measured the rate of pale green areas of petals using digital images. The analysis revealed that the greenish areas in petals exposed to MeJA vapor were significantly smaller than in petals not exposed to MeJA. In addition, there were fewer days to flowering after MeJA treatment. We concluded that postharvest treatment with MeJA is effective for reducing nonuniform coloration of early harvested flower buds of the double-flowered Eustoma ‘Voyage (Type II) Blue’.
