Two carbohydrate binding surface sites (SBSs) on barley &alpha;-amylase 1 (AMY1) of glycoside hydrolase family 13 (GH13) displayed synergy in interactions with starch granules, thus being pivotal for hydrolysis of supramolecular substrates. Mutational analysis showed that SBS1 is more critical for the conversion of starch granules, while SBS2 has higher affinity than SBS1 for &beta;-cyclodextrin (&beta;-CD). Noticeably, the binding preference of &beta;-CD to SBS2 differed distinctly from that of maltooligosaccharides to the catalytic nucleophile mutant D180A AMY1. Binding energy maps at subsites -8 through +4 of the active site indicated remarkably elevated affinity due to the Y380A mutation at SBS2. The high-yield AMY2 expression variant A42P, made it possible to show that Tyr378&mdash;corresponding to Tyr380 in AMY1&mdash;has a role in interactions with starch granules, but not in &beta;-CD binding. Besides SBSs, dedicated starch binding domains (SBDs) mediate binding to starch granules. SBDs are currently categorised into 9 carbohydrate binding module (CBM) families. A novel CBM20 subfamily encountered in regulatory enzymes possesses characteristically low affinity for &beta;-CD. Although &alpha;-amylase is essential for starch mobilisation in germinating barley seeds, efficient degradation requires the concerted action of &alpha;-amylase, &beta;-amylase, limit dextrinase (LD) and possibly &alpha;-glucosidase. Limit dextrinase (LD) is encoded by a single gene and represents the sole debranching activity during germination. Recent expression of functional LD in <i>Pichia pastoris</i> makes biochemical and biophysical characterisation of this GH13 enzyme possible. An endogenous limit dextrinase inhibitor was cloned and produced recombinantly and demonstrated to have sub-nanomolar affinity for LD.

Two coupled dynamical systems which both behave chaotically without coupling are studied. The coupling is linear. We show that the coupled system can behave regularly.

A study of accessory minerals in the Cape York iron meteorite has been carried out with the electron microprobe. Phases analyzed include chromite, sphalerite, two closely related potassium-bearing sulfides, silica, and native copper. In addition, four phosphate minerals were found: One chemically similar to buchwaldite, but rather rich in iron, one corresponding to terrestrial maricite, and two more, which seem to be new minerals on the basis of microprobe analysis. Evidence from the composition of accessory minerals as well as texture elucidates some details of the fractional crystallization of the group III AB parent melt. A modification of the fractional crystallization model is therefore proposed. We suggest that sulfide nodules have originated as droplets of an immiscible sulfur-rich liquid that continuously segregated from the parent melt during crystallization of the metal. The modified model also explains the Ni/Cr anticorrelation and the high abundance of sulfur in group III AB irons which could not be satisfactorily explained by previous models.

Traditional Medicines derived from medicinal plants are used by about 60% of the world's population. This review focuses on Indian Herbal drugs and plants used in the treatment of diabetes, especially in India. Diabetes is an important human ailment afflicting many from various walks of life in different countries. In India it is proving to be a major health problem, especially in the urban areas. Though there are various approaches to reduce the ill effects of diabetes and its secondary complications, herbal formulations are preferred due to lesser side effects and low cost. A list of medicinal plants with proven antidiabetic and related beneficial effects and of herbal drugs used in treatment of diabetes is compiled. These include, Allium sativum, Eugenia jambolana, Momordica charantia Ocimum sanctum, Phyllanthus amarus, Pterocarpus marsupium, Tinospora cordifolia, Trigonella foenum graecum and Withania somnifera. One of the etiologic factors implicated in the development of diabetes and its complications is the damage induced by free radicals and hence an antidiabetic compound with antioxidant properties would be more beneficial. Therefore information on antioxidant effects of these medicinal plants is also included.

People consume Catha edulis (khat) for its euphoric effect, and type 1 diabetics have claimed that khat could reduce elevated levels of blood sugar. However, khat has been suggested to provoke diabetes mellitus through destruction of pancreatic β-cells. This study investigated the effect of an ethanolic khat extract on pancreatic functions in type 1 diabetes (T1DM)-induced male Sprague-Dawley rats and to assess its in vitro cytotoxicity in rat pancreatic β-cells (RIN-14B). T1DM was induced in a total of 20 rats with a single intraperitoneal injection of 75 mg/kg of streptozotocin. The rats were distributed into four groups (n=5): the diabetic control, 8 IU insulin-treated, 200 mg/kg khat-treated, and 400 mg/kg khat-treated groups. Another 5 rats were included as a nondiabetic control. Body weight, fasting blood sugar, and caloric intake were recorded weekly. Four weeks after treatment, the rats were sacrificed, and blood was collected for insulin, lipid profile, total protein, amylase, and lipase analysis, while pancreases were harvested for histopathology. In vitro, khat exerted moderate cytotoxicity against RIN-14B cells after 24 and 48 h but demonstrated greater inhibition against RIN-14B cells after 72 h. Neither 200 mg/kg nor 400 mg/kg of khat produced any significant reduction in blood sugar; however, 200 mg/kg khat extract provoked more destruction of pancreatic β-cells as compared with the diabetic control. Ultimately, neither 200 mg/kg nor 400 mg/kg of khat extract could produce a hypoglycemic effect in T1DM-induced rats. However, 200 mg/kg of khat caused greater destruction of pancreatic β-cells, implying that khat may cause a direct cytotoxic effect on pancreatic β-cells in vitro.

1994年6月21日〜7月3日にサハリン中・南部の主要な陸上環境における繁殖期の鳥類の生息状況について調査した。調査期間中に104種の鳥類を記録した。各環境における主要種は,常緑針葉樹林では,ルリビタキ,シマゴマ,カラフトムシクイ,キクイタダキ,コガラ,ヒガラ,マヒワなど,カラマツ林では,ビンズイ,ノゴマ,カラフトムシクイ,コガラ,ヒガラ,マヒワ,カシラダカなど,落葉広葉樹林では,ビンズイ,シマゴマ,ノゴマ,コルリ,キビタキ,カラフトムシクイ,シジュウカラ,ゴジュウカラ,アオジなど,潅木草原や草原では,ヒバリ,ツメナガセキレイ,ノゴマ,シマセンニュウ,マキノセンニュウ,コヨシキリ,ムジセッカ,アオジ,シマアオジ,オオジュリンなどであった。このほか,河川沿い,湖,海岸など水域では,アビ,アカエリカイツブリ,カモ類,シギ・チドリ類,カモメ類,アジサシ類が観察された。

This study quantifies the population history of Iron Age nomads of southern Siberia by analyzing craniofacial diversity among contemporaneous Bronze and Iron Age (7th–2nd centuries BC) groups and compares them to a larger geographic sample of modern Siberian and Central Asian populations. In our analyses, we focus on peoples of the Tagar and Pazyryk cultures, and Iron Age peoples of the Tuva region. Twenty-six cranial landmarks of the vault and facial skeleton were analyzed on a total of 461 ancient and modern individuals using geometric morphometric techniques. Male and female crania were separated to assess potential sex-biased migration patterns. We explore southern Siberian population history by including Turkic-speaking peoples, a Xiongnu Iron Age sample from Mongolia, and a Bronze Age sample from Xinjiang. Results show that male Pazyryk cluster closer to Iron Age Tuvans, while Pazyryk females are more isolated. Conversely, Tagar males seem more isolated, while Tagar females cluster amongst an Early Iron Age southern Siberian sample. When additional modern Siberian samples are included, Tagar and Pazyryk males cluster more closely with each other than females, suggesting possible sex-biased migration amongst different Siberian groups. This is evident in modern female Tuva, who cluster with modern female Kalmyk, while modern Tuvan males do not. Male and female Iron Age Tuvans are not closely related to modern Tuvan peoples living in the region today, resulting from the influx of the Xiongnu beginning in the Late Iron Age. Both male and female Pazyryk and Tagar crania appear more similar to Central Asia groups, especially the Kazakh and Uzbek samples. However, there is evidence that Tagar females have a common origin with the Yakut, a modern nomadic population that resides in northeastern Siberia. These results would suggest variable genetic contributions for both sexes from Central and East Asia.

鉛直方向と角度について細かくとったマイクロ波の平行放射伝達モデルを用いて、EHF/SHFスペクトル領域にわたる数個の周波数での宇宙空間へ放射されるマイクロ波の伝達に対して、時間に依存して変わる雲の微物理構造の影響を調べるために、雲モデルのシミュレーションとともに、一連の数値実験を行なった。本研究の全般的な目的は、宇宙プラットホームから多チャンネル受動型マイクロ波を利用して降水を推定する技術に介在する物理を詳細に調べることにある。本論文は、先に発表した感度試験研究(Mugnaiand Smith,1988;Smith and Mugnai,1988)の続きである。発達するモデル雨雲における受動型マイクロ波の輝度温度に対する大きな氷粒子の効果を、EHF/SHFスペクトル域の10個の周波数で調べた。固い氷結モード及び低密度の氷結モードの両方に対して、それぞれ三つの雲モデルを考慮した。結果は、10.7GHz と 231GHz の問の周波域が、様々の雲モデルや氷結モードに異なって応答することを、はっきり示している。個々の雲層や降水層の輝度温度に果たす寄与を鉛直方向に分離するために我々が導入した、周波数に依存して鉛直に分布する一般化射出/散乱加重関数は、大気上端での輝度温度の強さに強く関与している特定の層を同定するのに、どのように利用できるかを示した。その一般化加重関数は、それ自身における散乱項の相対的強さを示す散乱関数め寄与率とも結びついている。このことは、輝度温度が個々の層における降水粒子によっていかに加減されるか、をよく理解する助けになる。この研究のもう一つの顕著な成果は、中間または高周波数(37GHz以上)に対する、混合相の存在の重要性を明らかにしたこと、及び85GHzでの氷結モードの影響を定量的に示したことである。更に、ある一定の全液体水分量に対しては、雲の鉛直スケールが、実際の観測と合う輝度温度を与える上での、主な支配的要因であることが示された。この結果は、北部アラバマでの1986年の COHMEX 実験における、航空機搭載の2チャンネルマイクロ波放射計による激しい雷雲の観測の実例解析に基づいている。

Karyotypes are described in Hemiechinus auritus and Paraechinus aethiopicus which have 48 chromosomes in 2n. The male complement of H. auritus consists of 43 macro- and 5 micro-chromosomes while that of the female comprises 44 macro- and 4-micro-chromosomes. The X chromosome is the smallest metacentric macro-chromosome, while the Y is a small subtelocentric micro-chromosome. These associate end-to-end at meiosis I.The male karyotype of P. aethiopicus consists of 44 macro- and 4 micro-chromosomes. The autosomes are metacentrics or submetacentrics in morphology. The sex-complex is characterized by the medium-sized X chromosome and the mediumsized submetacentric Y.

We report on the characteristics of 9 bb^^- pair events produced by a 600 GeV/c π^- beam and detected in the hybrid emulsion spectrometer of Fermilab experiment E653. The measured lifetimes for samples of 12 neutral and 6 charged beauty hadrons are τ_<b^0>=0.81^<+0.34+0.08'>_<-0.22-0.02> ps, and τ_<b^±>=3.84^<+2.73+0.80>_<-1.36-0.16> ps.
