[Purpose] To present the case of the resolution of right temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) following the correction of a right lateral head translation posture. [Subject and Methods] A 24 year old female reported facial pain and jaw clicking in the right TMJ. Radiography revealed a 19 mm right head (shift) translation posture. TMJ vibration analysis showed characteristic abnormalities for the right TMJ. The patient was treated with CBP® technique mirror image® left sided exercises, and traction methods as well as spinal manipulative therapy (SMT). [Results] After 36 treatments over a 12-week time period, a complete correction of the lateral head posture was achieved corresponding with a complete resolution of jaw pain and clicking. TMJ vibration analysis demonstrated normal right side TMJ characteristics following treatment. [Conclusion] Abnormal head/neck postures, such as lateral head translation, may be an unrealized source of TMJD and may be explained through the ‘regional interdependence’ model or by how seemingly unrelated anatomy may be associated with a primary complaint.

A series of 2β-[(4-substituted)-l, 2, 3-triazol-l-yl]methyl penicillanic acid sulfones was synthesized as β-lactamase inhibitors. Many of these compounds showed good in vitro inhibitory activity against penicillinase, cefotaximase and plasmid-mediated class III TEM enzymes, but exhibited weaker cephalosporinase inhibition. One member in this series-2β-[(4-pyridiniummethyl)-l, 2, 3-triazol-lyl]methyl-6, 6-dihydropenicillanate 1, 1-dioxide (12a), when tested in combination with piperacillin, showed excellent synergistic activity against microorganisms producing plasmid-mediated enzymes, but had insufficient activity against microorganisms producing chromosomally mediated class I enzymes.

The synthesis of β-lactamase inhibitory activity of a series of sodium 6-[(1-heteroarylthioethyl-1, 2, 3-triazol-4-yl)methylene]pemcillanate 1, 1-dioxides are described. Their activity was compared with tazobactam and sulbactam. The Z-isomers were more active than the E-isomers. The in vitro activity of the Z-isomers of the phenylthiadiazole derivatives (13a and 15a) was better than sulbactam against the tested β-lactamases and comparable to tazobactam especially against TEM-2 and cephalosporinase. But their synergistic activity with five antibiotics was inferior to tazobactam.

Six patients with ear diseases caused by nose blowing are described. Four of them developed perilymphatic fistula.Exploratory tympanotomy was performed on the left ear of case 1 who complained of tinnitus. Leakage was identified in the area of the round window, which was covered with a piece of perichondrium. Three patients (cases 2-4) complained of tinnitus and a floating sensation, echo sound, and dizziness. All of them have the habit of nose blowing.The symptoms disappeared spontaneously after a rest.Two patients (cases 5 and 6) developed fullness of the ear after nose blowing. They were diagnosed as suffering from bullous myringitis. Nose blowing may predispose to formation of bubbles within an infected tympanic membrane.

It was reported that a photovoltaic cell with carbonaceous film/n-type silicon (C/n-Si) was fabricated utilizing a process in which a carbonaceous film was deposited on an n-type silicon substrate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of 2, 5- dimethyl-p-benzoquinone at 500°C The purpose of this work is to study preparation and structure of the carbonaceous film. In this study, the carbonaceous films were made by CVD of 2, 5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone on a quartz substrate at a temperature between 500 and 1000°C. The 2, 5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone shows higher reaction activity for carbonization at low temperatures. At low CVD temperatures below 700°C, the carbonization reaction of 2, 5- dimethyl-p-benzoquinone was mainly caused by pyrolysis of its methyl and carbonyl groups. The carbonaceous film deposited at low temperatures below 700°C has a typical amorphous structure, and the one deposited above 700°C has a graphite-like lamellar structure oriented along the substrate.

The effect of phosphoric acid pre-etching on enamel bond fatigue durability of universal adhesives and two-step self-etch adhesives was investigated. Four universal adhesives and three two-step self-etch adhesives were used. The initial shear bond strengths and shear fatigue strengths to enamel with and without phosphoric acid pre-etching using the adhesives were determined. SEM observations were also conducted. Phosphoric acid pre-etching of enamel was found to increase the bond fatigue durability of universal adhesives, but its effect on two-step self-etch adhesives was material-dependent. In addition, some universal adhesives with phosphoric acid preetching showed similar bond fatigue durability to the two-step self-etch adhesives, although the bond fatigue durability of universal adhesives in self-etch mode was lower than that of the two-step self-etch adhesives. Phosphoric acid pre-etching enhances enamel bond fatigue durability of universal adhesives, but the effect of phosphoric acid pre-etching on the bond fatigue durability of two-step self-etch adhesives was material-dependent.

[Purpose] To present a case demonstrating the reduction of progressive thoracolumbar scoliosis by incorporating Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®) technique’s mirror image® exercises, traction and blocking procedures based on the ‘non-commutative properties of finite rotation angles under addition’ engineering law. [Subject and Methods] A 15-year-old female presented with a right thoracolumbar scoliosis having a Cobb angle from T5–L3 of 27° and suffering from headaches and lower back pains. Her curve had progressed over the last two years despite being under traditional chiropractic care. [Results] The patient was treated using CBP structural rehabilitation protocols incorporating mirror image traction, home blocking, corrective exercises and spinal manipulation. The patient was treated 24 times (including 45 home self-treatment blocking sessions) over the course of 15-weeks. Her thoracolumbar curve reduced from 27° to 8° and her headache and low back pain disability improved significantly. [Conclusion] CBP mirror image exercises and traction are consistent with other successful non-surgical approaches and show promise in treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

[Purpose] This case series presents the unique application of the non-commutative property of finite rotation angles under addition to the CBP® mirror image® treatment protocol for adult lumbar and thoraco-lumbar scoliosis. [Subjects and Methods] Five adult patients having lumbar/thoraco-lumbar scoliosis and back pain, and having at least two prominent thoracic postural abnormalities according to Harrison’s rotations and translations of thoracic postures were included. After initial assessment, mirror-image stress x-rays were taken. For each patient, one stress film was taken using the order of mirror image movements with the largest displacement followed by the second largest (primary + secondary) and one stress film was taken in the opposite order (secondary + primary). The consecutive ordered movements that resulted in the largest reduction of curvature were chosen as the order-specific series of movements all exercises and postural traction were to be performed for each patient. Spinal manipulation was also performed. [Results] All patients had a reduction of curvature concomitant with a reduction in pain levels. [Conclusion] This unique treatment approach offers a patient-specific, targeted structural rehabilitative procedure to stress the spine towards a more straightened configuration. Adult lumbar and thoraco-lumbar curves can be reduced and improved by these non-invasive CBP methods.

We compared foraging behavior of Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola Linnaeus) and Common Loon (Gavia immer Brünnich) on eight lakes in harvested and unharvested boreal mixedwood forest in northern Alberta, Canada. For one summer before (1996) and two summers after (1997, 1998) forest harvesting around three of the eight lakes, we recorded the duration of Bufflehead and Common Loon dives. After logging, forested buffer strips 100 m-wide separated cut-blocks from lakes (‘harvested lakes’). ‘Unharvested lakes’ were surrounded by ≥450 m of undisturbed forest throughout the study. There were no detectable differences in dive duration between harvested and unharvested lakes for Bufflehead or Common Loon. Correlations between environmental variables (water clarity, fish biomass, depth) and the duration of Common Loon dives were not significant. However, the duration of Bufflehead dives differed between lakes, unrelated to forest harvesting. The duration of Bufflehead dives was negatively correlated with water clarity but was not significantly correlated with fish biomass. While our study shows that the foraging behavior of Buffleheads was affected by lake conditions, the utility of aquatic birds as indicators of the effects of forestry on western boreal lakes remains unproven.
