Reactive sulfur species (RSS) include biological persulfide molecules that protect cells against oxidative stress and heavy metal toxicity. Vascular endothelial cells regulate blood coagulation and fibrinolytic activity, and prevent vascular disorders such as atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that RSS protect vascular endothelial cells not only from nonspecific cell damage but also from specific functional damage through regulation of specific cell functions. In the present study, cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells were treated with sodium trisulfide, a sulfane sulfur donor, and both [3H]thymidine incorporation and effects on cell cycle were analyzed. These results suggest that RSS stimulate vascular endothelial cell proliferation. RSS may reduce the functional cytotoxicity of antiproliferative agents.

Objective: Previous studies have suggested that the use of an ankle–foot orthosis may cause disuse atrophy of the tibialis anterior muscle. The objective of this study was to explore gait and muscle activity changes in patients in the recovery phase of stroke with 2-month use of an ankle–foot orthosis that provided plantarflexion resistance.Methods: The participants were 19 patients in the recovery phase of stroke who were prescribed an ankle–foot orthosis that provided plantarflexion resistance. We measured ankle and shank tilt angles as well as electromyography activity of the tibialis anterior and the soleus during 10-m walk tests. Measurements were taken on three occasions. The first was 2 weeks after delivery of the orthosis, 1 and 2 months after the initial measurement, and the third 2 months later. Changes in gait parameters were analyzed between the first and second measurements and between the second and third measurements.Results: Between the second and third measurements, significant increases were observed in plantarflexion and shank forward tilt angles and the activity ratio of the tibialis anterior during loading response compared with other phases.Conclusions: Plantarflexion movement induced by an ankle–foot orthosis with plantarflexion resistance could increase the activity ratio of the tibialis anterior during loading response.

1950 年に発表された「抹香町」以降、徐々に醸成されていった川崎長太郎のブームは、平野謙が「新事態」と呼んだように、マスメディアの時代における文学について再考を促すものだった。本稿は、『自選全集』にも収録されず読まれないままになっている川崎の作品が、先行作品のメタ言説となっていることを明らかにし、次いでその作品を享受した女性読者を分析することで、1950 年代における小説(家)と読者の関わりの一端をあきらかにすることを試みたものである。

Since 2011, pharmaceutical companies in Japan have been required to issue two types of documents regarding severe adverse drug reactions reported post-marketing, namely the Rapid Safety Communication Materials for Patients and the Related Materials. However, the adequacy of these documents has not yet been systematically assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of these two types of materials. The Rapid Safety Communications for Patients were obtained from the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) website. The Related Materials were obtained from pharmaceutical companies or the PMDA website. Three assessors independently scored the Rapid Safety Communication for Patients and the Related Materials using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Clear Communication Index (CCI). In addition, the contents and descriptions of the materials were analyzed. In total, 13 materials for seven drugs were assessed. Almost all materials contained the "main message" and "call to action". However, the average CCI scores for the Rapid Safety Communication for Patients and Related Materials for Patients were 68.8 and 74.3 (out of 100), respectively. Further, none of the evaluated materials were scored above the CCI threshold score (i.e., ≥ 90%). Descriptions regarding "language", "state of science", and "risk" were not adequate. In particular, the terminology used in materials seemed difficult for patients to understand. In conclusion, the Japanese Rapid Communication Materials for Patients require improvement. Furthermore, a system for evaluating these materials prior to publication should be established.

Citrus-type crude drugs (CCDs) are commonly used to formulate decoctions in Kampo formula (traditional Japanese medicine). Our previous study reported metabolomic analyses for differentiation of the methanol extracts of Citrus-type crude drugs (CCDs) using UHPLC/MS, and 13C- and 1H-NMR. The present study expanded the scope of its application by analyzing four CCD water extracts (Kijitsu, Tohi, Chimpi, and Kippi); these CCDs are usually used as decoction ingredients in the Kampo formula. A principal component analysis score plot of processed UPLC/MS and NMR analysis data indicated that the CCD water extracts could be classified into three groups. The loading plots showed that naringin and neohesperidin were the distinguishing components. Three primary metabolites, α-glucose, β-glucose, and sucrose were identified as distinguishing compounds by NMR spectroscopy. During the preparation of CCD dry extracts, some compounds volatilized or decomposed. Consequently, fewer compounds were detected than in our previous studies using methanol extract. However, these results suggested that the combined NMR- and LC/MS-based metabolomics can discriminate crude drugs in dried water extracts of CCDs.

Cells in the tissues and organs of a living body are subjected to mechanical forces, such as pressure, friction, and tension from their surrounding environment. Cells are equipped with a mechanotransduction mechanism by which they perceive mechanical forces and transmit information into the cell interior, thereby causing physiological or pathogenetic mechano-responses. Endothelial cells (ECs) lining the inner surface of blood vessels are constantly exposed to shear stress caused by blood flow and a cyclic strain caused by intravascular pressure. A number of studies have shown that ECs are sensitive to changes in these hemodynamic forces and alter their morphology and function, sometimes by modifying gene expression. The mechanism of endothelial mechanotransduction has been elucidated, and the plasma membrane has recently been shown to act as a mechanosensor. The lipid order and cholesterol content of plasma membranes change immediately upon the exposure of ECs to hemodynamic forces, resulting in a change in membrane fluidity. These changes in a plasma membrane’s physical properties affect the conformation and function of various ion channels, receptors, and microdomains (such as caveolae and primary cilia), thereby activating a wide variety of downstream signaling pathways. Such endothelial mechanotransduction works to maintain circulatory homeostasis; however, errors in endothelial mechanotransduction can cause abnormalities in vascular physiological function, leading to the initiation and progression of various vascular diseases, such as hypertension, thrombosis, aneurysms, and atherosclerosis. Recent advances in detailed imaging technology and computational fluid dynamics analysis have enabled us to evaluate the hemodynamic forces acting on vascular tissue accurately, contributing greatly to our understanding of vascular mechanotransduction and the pathogenesis of vascular diseases, as well as the development of new therapies for vascular diseases.

Objective Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder. With progression of PD, the wearing-off phenomenon occurs more frequently as a motor complication, decreasing the patient's quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors for the wearing-off phenomenon in Japanese PD patients. Methods All of the study participants were clinically diagnosed as having PD. Each patient was assessed for the wearing-off phenomenon based on the findings of clinical assessments and interviews that were conducted during a single visit. The risk factors for wearing-off were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results Wearing-off was observed in 101 of the 180 (56.1%) patients who were enrolled in this study. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the onset of PD at ≥69 years of age (odds ratio [OR], 0.22; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.05-0.88; p=0.032), female sex (OR, 6.49; 95% CI, 2.34-17.99; p<0.001), catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor treatment (OR, 19.59; 95% CI, 3.55-108.11; p<0.001) and a high daily levodopa dosage (≥600 mg/day) (OR, 7.69; 95% CI, 1.41-41.84; p=0.018) were independent predictive factors for wearing-off in Japanese PD patients. Conclusion Age at the symptomatic disease onset, female sex, COMT inhibitor treatment, and a high daily levodopa dose were associated with the occurrence of wearing-off in Japanese PD patients. Physicians need to consider the risk factors and carefully choose medications for PD patients to postpone the occurrence of this phenomenon for as long as possible.

ビルマにはナッと呼ばれる精霊や神に対する信仰があるとされている。しかし、実際のビルマの人びとの多くは、ナッの実在に対しているかいないかわからないと考えたり(不確定性)、存在しないと考えたりしている(非実在性)。本論文では、ナッの実在に対して不確定、あるいは非実在の立場をとる語りをもとに、従来のナッ信仰の人類学的研究(スパイロの心理学的アプローチ、ナッシュの社会的機能によるアプローチ、田村の象徴論的アプローチ)が想定してきたナッ信仰と、実際のビルマにおけるナッの実在に対する多くの人びとの否定的認識には隔たりがあることを指摘する。この隔たりは、他者の信念の記述可能性を論じた浜本によるコミュニケーション空間という概念から説明できる。浜本によれば、人類学者が他者の慣行Sについて「彼らはSを信じている」と記述するとき、その話者のコミュニケーション空間において、Sが真とみなされないと想定していることを意味する。反対に他者の慣行Pが話者のコミュニケーション空間において真とみなされるとき「彼らはPを知っている」と記述される。精霊の実在の不確定性や非実在性は、「彼らは~を信じている」とは表わされてこなかった、つまり、精霊の実在を信じる人だけが問題化され、そうでない人(精霊の実在を不安定、非実在とする人)が問題化されなかったのは、「信じる」という語に込められていた人類学者の側の認識によると説明できる。

A stone-embedded fish passage (SEF) allows fish to pass a barrier by reducing the velocity in the slope. The efficiency of SEFs has however not been evaluated well and the design parameters are not clear. The efficiency of SEFs for fish therefore needs to be evaluated and analyzed. In this research, we attempted to develop a simple equation to estimate the passability of an SEF for Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis), which is applicable in the SEF's designing stage. We reproduced the SEF conditions experimentally. The set-up consisted of a pool and a channel, and evaluated its passability based on physical conditions such as air bubbles, velocity, and depth. With the results, we developed a decision tree to explain the passability using design variables such as discharge, channel slope, and pool size and depth. Then, to estimate the whole SEF, we proposed an equation which calculated the average of the decision tree outputs throughout the SEF's whole ascending routes. Lastly, we verified the equation through field experiments. The equation showed good agreement with the observed fish ascent success rate. This technique could therefore be used to evaluate a SEF in its designing stage.

Capillary electrophoretic methods have been developed for the analysis of Monascus yellow pigments for food additives. Monascus yellow pigments were successfully separated by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) with a 20mM sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution containing 50mM phosphate buffer, pH 7.0, and 20% acetonitorile or a 2.0% butyl acrylate/butyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer sodium salts (BBMA) solution containing 20mM ammonium formate buffer, pH 7.0, and 10% methanol. The xanthomonasin A was identified with the molecular mass measured by FABMS. Monascus yellow pigments were extracted from candies with solid phase extraction and analyzed by the developed technique.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl and superoxide anion radicals, are highly reactive molecules derived from the metabolism of oxygen. ROS play positive roles in cell physiology, but they may also damage cell membranes and DNA, inducing oxidation that causes membrane lipid peroxidation and decreases membrane fluidity. Soymilk yogurt, which is soymilk fermented using lactic acid bacteria (LAB), is an excellent food item with numerous functional substances with antioxidant effects. In this study, the antioxidative activities of soymilk yogurt were investigated. Sixteen of the 26 tested LAB strains solidified soymilk. In antioxidant capacity tests for bacterial cells, Leuconostoc mesenteroides MYU 60 and Pediococcus pentosaceus MYU 759 showed the highest values in the oxygen radical antioxidant capacity (ORAC) and hydroxyl radical antioxidant capacity (HORAC) tests, respectively. The supernatant of soymilk yogurt made with Lactobacillus gasseri MYU 1 showed the highest ORAC and HORAC values. L. mesenteroides MYU 60, Lactobacillus plantarum MYU 74, Lactobacillus reuteri MYU 220, and P. pentosaceus MYU 759 showed significantly high N-acetylcysteine equivalent values compared with the control in a total ROS reducing assay (p<0.05). These strains were selected, and a comet assay was performed, which exhibited decreased values in all selected strains compared with the control, indicating DNA protection. An acidic exopolysaccharide produced by P. pentosaceus MYU 759 showed high antioxidant capacity. The antioxidant substances produced by LAB fermentation may be exopolysaccharides, antioxidant peptides, and isoflavone aglycones. Soymilk yogurt can be used as a functional food useful for various diseases related to oxidation.

As the amount of debris in orbit increases, so does the risk of collisions and their seriousness. All nations involved with space operations acknowledge this growing threat. One solution receiving increased attention is active debris removal. The first step in a debris removal mission would be to approach the debris. In this phase, it is important to ensure passive abort safety and to guarantee the robustness against collisions in the case of off-nominal thruster burns, that may be caused by spacecraft anomalies such as navigation sensor or actuator failures. This paper compares two types of passive abort safe trajectories –the V-bar hopping and spiral approaches– considering the ΔV budget, the duration of operations, and variation in the line-of-sight vector to the target. This paper also proposes design strategies for determining the parameters in the two candidate trajectories, considering passive abort safety. The robustness of the trajectories against collisions due to off-nominal thruster burns is also demonstrated through Monte Carlo simulations. The paper investigates which trajectories are suitable for an active debris removal mission to a non-cooperative target.

Among the reported probiotic Bacillus strains, B. subtilis C-3102 has the unique potential to improve feed uptake under stress conditions in the broilers, piglets, and cows. In this study, we sought to evaluate the protective effect of feed additive probiotic Bacillus subtilis C-3102 against Salmonella enterica infection of specific pathogen-free (SPF) chicks in floor pens in two experiments. In the experiment-1, the chicks in the control group (n=32) were fed a basal diet and those in the C-3102 group (n=32) were fed a basal diet supplemented with 1×106 CFU/g of feed for 28 days. On day 7 post-challenge with S. enterica, there was no significant change in the body weight between both the groups throughout the test period, whereas detection rates of S. enterica in the C-3102 group were significantly lower in the cecum and liver on days 21 and 14 post-challenge, respectively. In the experiment-2, minimum dosage of C-3102 cells required to protect Salmonella infection was evaluated using 3 dosages. Chicks were divided into four groups, fed with different dosages of C-3102 (1×106, 5×105, 3×105, and 0 CFU/g of feed), and challenged with S. enterica (2.8×108 CFU/chicken). S. enterica infection was completed within 7 days post- challenge and was almost excluded from the liver and spleen on day 21 post- challenge in the control group. Average values showed a trend for higher infection rates in the control group >3×105>5×105>1×106 CFU/g on days 14 and 21 post-challenge. These results suggest that B. subtilis C-3102 supplementation has the potential to reduce S. enterica infection rates and/or to accelerate the exclusion of S. enterica from the chicks.
