We attempted to clarify how the impressions imparted on observers are affected by smiles with exposed teeth. Sixty young adults participated in the study, 23 men and 37 women, who had a mean age of 23±2 years. Impressions of composite (average) male and female faces were rated to eliminate individual bias. Ten facial photos were processed for each of 10 adult males with a mean age of 25±2 years and 10 adult females with a mean age of 26±1 years. Three stimulus images were used for each gender: a neutral face (teeth hidden), a smiling face (teeth hidden), and a grinning face (teeth exposed). The average male faces were rated by 30 subjects and the average female faces by the other 30. The semantic differential method was used to rate the impressions. Group ratings were then subjected to factor analysis. The two common factors having the greatest explanatory power were: “Sociable" and “Active" for the male stimulus images and “Friendly" and “Elegant" for the females. Significant differences between stimuli were observed for scores on both the first and second factors. In all cases, the grin was rated highest, followed by the smile and neutral face. We found that when smiling with the teeth exposed, male faces give a strong impression of sociability and activity, while females give a strong impression of friendliness and elegance. Type 2 diabetes, which is characterized by a combination of decreased insulin secretion and decreased insulin sensitivity, can be delayed or prevented by healthy lifestyle behaviors. Therefore, it is important that the population in general understands their personal risk at an early age to reduce their chances of ever developing the disease. A family history of hypertension is known to be associated with insulin resistance, but the effect of a family history of hypertension on the onset of type 2 diabetes has not well been examined. We performed a retrospective study examining patient age at the time of the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes by analyzing a dataset of 1,299 patients (1,021 men and 278 women) who had been diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes during a health checkup. The mean ± standard deviation of the patient age at the time of the diagnosis of diabetes was 49.1 ± 10.4 years for patients with a family history of hypertension and 51.8 ± 11.4 years for patients without a family history of hypertension (p < 0.001). A multivariate linear regression analysis showed a significant association between a family history of hypertension and a younger age at the time of the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, independent of a family history of diabetes mellitus and a male sex, suggesting that a positive family history of hypertension might be associated with the accelerated onset of type 2 diabetes.

We collected all the data of gravity measurements carried out over the last 40 years by Institute Geofisico del Peru (IGP). Because of the long time since data collection, some of the information needed for data reduction were lost over the years. This loss made it difficult for us to determine all of the gravity values unambiguously and consistently from the presently available IGP data alone. Accordingly, there was a need for independently determined gravity stations to which the measurements done by IGP may be compared. In order to provide reference gravity values, we utilized Japanese survey data collected between 1980 and 1984, and conducted more surveys in various parts of Peru in the period between 1995 and 1998. These gravity stations number more than 800, and provide three or more reference points for each of the IGP survey routes. Using these references, the gravity values were calculated for the IGP dataset and Bouguer corrections were applied. Finally, a Bouguer anomaly map of Peru was produced based on these data. This paper reports all the procedures involved in the data reduction, discusses the reliability of the reduced data, and points out the main features of the Bouguer anomaly map.

There is increasing evidence showing that wind velocity affects the flight and foraging behavior of seabirds; however, few studies have examined these effects on seabirds inhabiting tropical oceans where lighter wind conditions usually prevail. The Brown Booby Sula leucogaster is an example of a tropical seabird with relatively low wing loading; strong wind conditions may be expected to impede the stability of their flight. We examined how different wind conditions affected the duration and flying behavior of Brown Booby fledglings during foraging trips by means of direct observation of nest attendance and by attaching video loggers to birds. The duration of foraging trips by fledglings decreased with increasing wind speed, and during flight, the body rotation of fledglings became greater with increasing wind speed. As expected, fledglings were buffeted by strong winds due to their relative inexperience in flight combined with their low wing loading. Fledglings were probably forced to flap against strong winds in order to adjust the stability of their bodies, offsetting the efficient use of wind for gliding. Furthermore, the height at which fledglings flew fluctuated more at higher wind velocities, which may have constrained their detection and capture of prey. In conclusion, our results indicate that the aerodynamic performance of Brown Booby fledglings is impaired by strong wind conditions, leading to poor flight stability and potentially reduced prey detection.

Rhythmic incremental growth lines occur in dental hard tissues of vertebrates, and dentinogenesis in rodent incisors is suggested to be controlled by the 24-hr circadian clock. Rodent incisors continue to grow throughout the animal’s life; however, similar to human teeth, rodent molars stop growing after crown formation. This similarity suggests that the mouse molar is an excellent model to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying growth of human teeth. However, not much is known about the rhythmic dentinogenesis in mouse molars. Here, we investigated the incremental growth lines in mouse molar dentin using tetracycline as the growth marker. The incremental growth lines were observed to be generated at approximately 8-hr intervals in wild-type mice housed under 12:12 hr light-dark conditions. Moreover, the 8-hr rhythmic increments persisted in the wild-type and Bmal1−/− mice housed in constant darkness, where Bmal1−/− mice become behaviorally arrhythmic. These results revealed that the dentinogenesis in mouse molars underlie the ultradian rhythms with around 8-hr periodicity. Further, the circadian clock does not seem to be involved in this process, providing new insight into the mechanisms involved in the tooth growth.

Eigenvalue communication is a promising technology that can overcome capacity limitations caused by the Kerr nonlinearity in optical fibers. In this letter, we propose an artificial neural network-based demodulation method for optical eigenvalue-modulated signals using on-off encoding. The proposed method has a power margin improvement of 9.2 dB at the bit error rate of 3.8 × 10−3 compared with the conventional inverse scattering transform-based demodulation method in numerical simulations.

Aim: An identification of the high-risk group of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) is important in the management of patients with diabetes. Metabolomics is a potential tool for the discovery of new biomarkers. With this background, we aimed to identify metabolites associated with atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A total of 176 patients with T2DM who have never had a CVD event and 40 who were survivors of coronary artery disease (CAD) events were enrolled. Non-targeted metabolome analysis of fasting plasma samples was performed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) highly optimized for multiple measurement of blood samples. First, metabolites were screened by analyzing the association with the established markers of subclinical atherosclerosis (i.e., carotid maximal intima-media thickness (max-IMT) and flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD)) in the non-CVD subjects. Then, the associations between the metabolites detected and the history of CAD were investigated. Result: A total of 65 annotated metabolites were detected. Non-parametric univariate analysis identified inositol and indoxyl sulfate as significantly (p<0.05) associated with both max-IMT and FMD. These metabolites were also significantly associated with CAD. Moreover, inositol remained to be associated with CAD even after adjustments for traditional coronary risk factors. Conclusions: We identified novel biomarker candidates for atherosclerosis in Japanese patients with T2DM using GC/MS-based non-targeted metabolomics.

Aerodynamics of an owl-like wing model at low Reynolds numbers (Re = O(104–5)) are investigated using large-eddy simulations with high-resolution computational schemes. The airfoil shape of the owl-like wing model is constructed based on a cross-sectional geometry of the owl wing at 40% wingspan from the root. The chord-based Re ranges from 1.0 × 104 to 5.0 × 104 and the angle of attack (α) varies from 0 to 14 deg. The time-averaged lift (Cl) and drag coefficients computed are in reasonable agreement with the results of force measurement. The results computed clarify a nonlinear change in the Cl curve slope, which is due to an increase in the suction peaks in conjunction with the change in type of separation, the formation of a laminar separation bubble (LSB), and pressure recovery on the pressure side. The generation of the LSB on the suction and/or pressure sides at the Re of 2.3 × 104 and 4.6 × 104 are seen, while reattachments are observed only on the pressure side at the Re of 1.0 × 104 due to the camber of the wing. Furthermore, the owl-like wing model demonstrates favorable aerodynamic performance in terms of a maximum lift-to-drag ratio in comparison with several airfoils at the Re range considered. This is due to the strong suction peaks and distribution of surface pressure on the pressure side. It is emphasized that the concave lower surface enhances the time-averaged aerodynamic performance at all of the α even though the LSB is generated and fluctuation in lift history is induced at low α.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of freestyle swimming performance between adolescence and adult Japanese top-class swimmers.Methods: The 234 males and 134 females ranked in the top 100 records of 50, 100, 200 and 400 m freestyle short-course performances of over 22 years old during 2016 to 2018 (latest TIME), and their season best performances during 2006 to 2017 were analyzed. All data were collected from the public database “Swimrecord.com” by Japan Swimming Federation. Performance maturity status was determined by the ratio of each age record to the latest TIME and the relationship between the latest TIME and each age record was evaluated. Also, the subjects were divided into the upper or lower group with reference to the latest TIME and the developmental changes of performance were compared between the groups.Results: The performance maturity status was higher in females than males at each age. The correlation between the latest TIME and each age record became gradually stronger from males aged 17 years and females aged 14 years, but there was no clear correlation in the previous records. There was no difference in developmental changes in performance between the upper and lower groups in both males and females.Conclusions: The longitudinal analysis of the swimming performance in the growth period reveals that the Japanese top-class swimmers show high performance before 12 years old and that the time to approximate peak performance appeared earlier in females than in males and the relationship is different depending on swimming distance.

The present study examined how verbal information affects odor cued autobiographical remembering. In experiment 1, fifty-one participants completed the Memory Characteristics Questionnaire (MCQ; Johnson, Foley, Suengas, & Ray, 1988) after remembering memories cued by odors. Familiar odor cues were used that represented orthogonal combinations of high and low rates of naming, and with and without verbal labels. Results showed that autobiographical memories cued by odor without verbal labels were more vivid than memories cued by ones with verbal labels under conditions of low rate of the naming. In order to verify the results of experiment 1, forty participants were closely investigated in experiment 2. The results showed that memories cued by odors with a high rate of naming were faster and more vivid than memories with a low rate. Similarly, memories cued by odor with verbal labels were faster and more vivid than without. These findings suggest that verbal information plays a significant role in odor-cued autobiographical remembering.

Here we report that coffee showed a strong antibacterial action on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Helicobacter pylon(H. pylon). This action against H. pylon suggests that coffee may have action as a useful natural inhibitor of gastritis and gastric ulcers.

We investigated the antioxidative flavonoid glycosides in the peel extract of lemon fruit (Citrus limon). Six flavanon glycosides: eriocitrin, neoeriocitrin, narirutin, naringin, hesperidin, and neohesperidin, and three flavone glycosides: diosmin, 6,8-di-C-β-glucosyldiosmin (DGD), and 6-C-β-glucosyldiosmin (GD) were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Their antioxidative activity was examined using a linoleic acid autoxidation system. The antioxidative activity of eriocitrin, neoeriocitrin and DGD was stronger than that of the others. Flavonoid glycosides were present primarily in the peel of lemon fruit. There was only a small difference in the content of the flavonoid glycosides of the lemon fruit juice from various sources and varieties. Lemon fruit contained abundant amounts of eriocitrin and hesperidin and also contained narirutin, diosmin, and DGD, but GD, neoeriocitrin, naringin, and neohesperidin were present only in trace amounts. The content of DGD, GD, and eriocitrin was especially abundant in lemons and limes; however, they were scarcely found in other citrus fruits. The content of flavonoid compounds in lemon juice obtained by an in-line extractor at a juice factory was more abundant than that obtained by hand-squeezing. These compounds were found to be stable even under heat treatment conditions (121°C, 15 min) in acidic solution.
